George’s guess would have been a better movie. Shame.

jmundt33a

I can’t tell if the toxic gloopiness is the writing or Grenier or both, but it definitely undermines one of the threads they seemed to be emphasizing on initial release.

Robert Cooper

I hate Miranda much less than I hate the Adrian Grenier. He is such a whiny little bitch. Also, that device is a Danger Hiptop/T-Mobile Sidekick. The OS and runtime for that is the foundation for Android a few years later.

Jeff K.

Just now realizing how much of an Entourage weekend this is turning out to be, with Adrian Grenier in this and a young Kevin Connelly in Rocky V tomorrow.

OddThomas

The Anne Hathaway/Kaiju movie you've been looking for: Colossal

If you want to see how good an actor Stanley Tucci really is, watch The Lovely Bones.

Christian Da Silva

Here are some other recommendations of no particular theme for the future: - The cable guy - Jingle all the way - Perfume: the story of a murderer - Fun with Dick and Jane - Yes man - Dallas Buyers Club - Starsky & Hutch (the Ben Stiller one) - Matilda - The Hangover 3 - White chicks - Anger management - Boat trip - Major Payne - Edward Scissorhands - Crazy, stupid love - Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events - The Pianist

Christian Da Silva

If you guys wanna see another movie that has a devil (a very, VERY sexy devil that George is going to love), go watch Bedazzled with Brendan Fraser.

I don’t vote for movies that George or Simone have seen already, I personally like to vote for movies they both haven’t seen…that being said, Devil Wears Prada is a certified classic and I’m glad George finally got to see it.

jmundt33a

Yes Man, Matilda and Edward Scissorhands.

Why do you think Miranda doesn't have about 24 assistants working in shifts to cover her many whimsical demands without stress? I can't decide if it's because they couldn't find 24 or even 4 of the million girls who want the job who can actually stand doing it or if she prefers having just one assistant (and assistant's assistant) at a time so she can break their spirit to feel better about herself. My most expensive piece of clothing is a heavy winter jacket I've had for like 15 years. It cost some $450. On the other hand I have a 10 year old computer that cost $1800. Funny part is, I didn't pay for either one. Not counting gifts, financial assistance and some inheritances from various relatives the most expensive thing I own is probably a $150 pair of pants. Got a lot of sympathy for Andy not summoning much enthusiasm for the fashion enthusiast press that worships useless status symbols she can't afford and regards her like a backwater village idiot cause she doesn't share their interests. Like how dare you choose a sweater cause it was cheap and comfortable? How dare you care about such meaningless qualities? Don't you know how much work we put into making that sweater be CERULEAN?

Jpsynergy

Not sure if it's the best movie there ever is but I find it to be pretty funny. Thanks for the react.

Simon Baker, Christian , is great on a show call The Mentalist, you may want to add it to your list at least season 1.

Alex

omg, would be amazing if the did. One of my favorites

VirtuallyVeronicka

Probably my favorite thumbnail of your channel! ☺️

Mastervodo

Great Thumbnail. Love this movie. Fond memories. Streep is just so GREAT that entitled, condescending BITCH role. How someone like that goes through their lives without getting decked is crazy to me.

REDR58

Excellent suggestion!

Vengeance

You had me at Anne Hathaway.

Justin Russell

I remember seeing this in middle school and rewatching through high school and just having a huge crush on Meryl Streep specifically in this bossy bitch role 😂

Jonathan Eaton

"Don't look, George!"..."OOOOH!" After all the horrible things they have watched, it was the steak thrown into the sink that she knew he couldn't bare to see. lol

theycallmekev

I disagree with most list but this is a pretty solid list of films i think George and Simone would absolutely love!

guyincognito

I would recommend the 70s Fun With Dick and Jane starring Jane Fonda and George Segel. S&G shouldn't do it because it would get approximately 2 views. However it is one of the funniest movies of the 70s.

blerbaberpaterb

....the movie that IS about the fashion industry and actively points out it's problems...? ...not event gonna get into your boyfriend thing.... That's just difference in opinion you seem to be struggling with....

Life in the cave of Garanoga

The Princess Diaries 1 and 2 need to happen now. Stacked cast with a few surprises you'll love and just really fun movies. In the world of overdone princess fantasy tropes and movies Princess Diaries stands out as just good movies.

Vengeance

Or they’re both wrong. While Nate should have been more supportive (the phone stealing scene with him and the friends stands out), Andy consistently cancelled or delayed plans with almost no regard for Nate’s or her friend’s feelings. And she openly flirted with another guy multiple times, once at a function with her friends RIGHT IN FRONT of her friend. They both could’ve done better on the relationship, but to insinuate that she bears none of the responsible is insane.

David Crabtree

Nate is one of whiniest, unlikable characters in film!

ImpishMisconception

I love the movie, The Devil Wears Prada. I have watched it many times, one of my all-time favourite movies. I also go back and forth on Andy’s “choice” to go to Paris. I go back and forth on whether it was really a choice, as Miranda said that if Andy didn’t go, Miranda would assume that Andy wasn’t serious about Runway or any other publication. This sounds like blackmail to me, and I do not doubt that if Andy had said no, her future ould would have been screwed. Also, though, in a way, Andy did have a choice, because she could have said no. No one held a gun to her head and forced her to go to Paris. Andy could have said no and dealt with Miranda screwing with her future. Andy did have that choice. However, Andy wanted to be a journalist. So, did she choose to get ahead? Or was she painted into a corner? I honestly go back and forth. …. I think Nate and her friends were very unsupportive. It seemed to me that they all had this inner script of, “We hate our jobs; therefore, to be part of the group, you must hate your job or you suck.” Typical human tribalism. I hypothesize that we all do this, either consciously or subconsciously. We look for others to be like us, and we make friends with those who we think are like us; whether we are aware of it or not, we all do this. It’s instinct, as if someone is like us, we figure they must be safe, they aren’t a threat. Anyone who isn’t like us, we instinctively perceive as a threat. We aren’t even aware that we are doing this most of the time. This goes back to when we were living in caves and had to depend on each other for survival. If someone wasn’t in our tribe, they were against the tribe, a threat. I saw this coming early on in the movie, when Andy’s friends were talking about their jobs. Nate is in cooking, Lilly does art, and the other guy (I forget his name) is a corporate research analyst. They toast to jobs that pay the rent. That told me right away that if Andy started liking her job and got good at it, she wouldn’t be part of the group. As soon as she started getting good at her job, true to form, her friends didn’t react well, like stealing her phone while it rang.

BoredLittleLady

You want to watch a deal with the devil movie? Try Bedazzled (2000).

Happy Hanukkah

Apropos Simon Baker, I will once again recommend the star-studded Margin Call (2011). I think it is very much a George film.

Happy Hanukkah

1:07-1:18 Mom: You just wait until Dad gets home! Dad: Oh God, what now? :-)

To comment on your last point, I personally love my job, but the only reason I go to work everyday is for the paycheck. I don’t work because I enjoy my job. I work because I have to work to live. Maybe that’s just me To bring it back to your first point, Andy did have a choice and I would’ve quit. To agree with a comment George made, no job is worth alienating myself from my friends and family. And if quitting means it would affect the next stop in my career, then so be it.

Maria Forsström

Love The Mentalist! They should absolutely watch it at some point!

Happy Hanukkah

30:30 That is actually valuable information, which I have put to good use. "Is there anything I should know about you?" "Well, I don't mean to brag, but *I* have Her-Pehz."

Claude Edwards

The funny thing about this movie is that all of her friends would be at work too. Restaurant, Gallery and Econ jobs are just as hectic, with just as long hours and equally insane bosses.

nj

invited to brag about our most expensive shit, of course my immediate inclination is to brag about my biggest bargains . . . i once paid $60 for a pair of prada flats (that weren’t obviously labeled as such - if you want me to wear a billboard advertising your company, why am i paying you?) . . . they were super comfortable, i wore them until they were no longer wearable. found a second pair on ebay for roughly the same price . . . wore that pair into the ground too. i would never pay full price for them, but if I found another pair for under $100, i’d buy them again.

James W.

This movie rules. I understand that I am probably part robot or something but, there is no way I am pouting in my sweats if a woman who looks even half as good as Anne Hathaway deigns to be my girlfriend. I would be far more concerned that she was losing herself in her work and not about missing something as inconsequential as a birthday. Nate can kiss my black ass for real.

Mike FromOz

Bedazzled is great, and I am sure you'd both love it!

dys

I haven't looked into it but I'd guess the reason the costuming was so expensive compared to something like LOTR is they had to purchase actual couture clothing. I personally do think the Orc armor involved more impressive artistry than a lot of real high-fashion but there's simply far less of a premium for talented film industry costume artists than there is for elite fashion designers.

Mike FromOz

I've never worn anything really expensive, as I am so tall and burly that most things don't fit my size. I need to buy stuff for me, and it's usually just cheap stuff. I get paint and other work materials everywhere on everything. In regards to Prada, for the nightclub scene in Blade 2, Del Toro wanted a whole club full of people wearing high end gear in the nightclub, but couldn't afford that for the film. So in Prague he put out a call for people to come be extras for the shoot, wearing their best nightclub gear. Boom, a ton of people came out all dressed to the 9's in really expensive brands, and cost nothing for wardrobe for the film. He's a smart cookie.

Yes, it would be cool to see them react to Patrick Jane

Whatever you gotta tell yourself to sell your soul to the devil

MacGuffinStuff

Love Meryl Streep, and I think she could BE the actual Devil and I'd still love her. Robert Johnson supposedly sold his soul to become the best blues guitarist of his time, came to the graveyard at midnight and took lessons from the Devil. I'd have sold it to play a valet in this, or a Mexican valet in OUATIH, "Ey you wanna Kleenex homes?" Robert Johnson died young (27) because he came back to the bar owned by the guy who's wife he yadda yadda'd, and got his, "a whiskey" poisoned (what happens if you don't specify your whiskey?). But hey, go on down to the Crossroads (CREAM, Eric Clapton) and play your heart, see if Ol' Scratch pays you a visit. CROSSROADS, the Ralph Macchio one, not the Britney one. That guitar duel is what made me realize I should stick to rhythm guitar. To this day, lonely middle of nowhere crossroads kind of creep me out. "I'm not Superstitious, but I am a little Stitious." -Michael G. Scott, also a big Meryl Streep fan.

MacGuffinStuff

I remember The Office episode when Michael, who apparently can't finish a movie in one sitting, for several mornings would throw his coat on Pam's reception desk and insult her, and then finally comes in and apologizes to Pam, "Meryl Streep turns out to be the bad guy, never see it coming." And then he calls Pam, Minushka or something, she figures out he's watching Million Dollar Baby. The realization. "Macushla!....He's going to try to kill me " I actually really want to see this sequel though, not lying. Anne Hathaway is, I'd go down to the Crossroads to have her politely punt me from her home like Peter Dinklage.

Donna Castellano

Man, I would love an Entourage react but I'm sure that show wouldn't go over with most of the viewers.

Juley

I absolutely agree. He was unsupportive from the start.

Juley

It’s called power. If you’ve got that much of it, people let you get away with a hell of a lot. I’m sure she wasn’t always like that. It’s the kind of attitude that builds over time with that level of success.

Juley

I’ve never been the boss of any big company. But I’ve been the boss of a small non-profit organization. It always seems like it would be easier if you just had more people to spread out the work. Unfortunately, it’s the opposite. The more people you have working for you, the harder it gets to manage. It takes a lot of effort to train people and manage them and divvy up work and best use everyone’s strengths. It would be so much easier to have one or two people who understand what is needed and just get it done. Granted, it’s not as humane…but definitely easier from the standpoint of the boss.

Yes perfect!

I think Simone (and George) may have missed a few key elements of that final scene between Andy and Nate. First of all, blaming Andy for sleeping with someone else while they were “on a break” doesn’t make much sense given what Nate did. She’s gone for a week and he takes a job in another city. He was definitely moving on, and moving on fast. Second, they didn’t end up moving to Boston together. After she met with Nate, she took a job in NYC. So she wasn’t moving to Boston. It sounded like they might try the long distance thing, but I can’t imagine that working out. Nate’s a little too self-centered for that (yeah, he annoys me). Also, that ending with Nate really bothered me. He was whining throughout the whole movie because her job was interfering with their relationship. But he’s fine taking a job in another city to further his career without ever discussing it with her. Yes, they were “on a break.” But that clearly shows that he was either ready for the relationship to be over or just ready to do whatever he needed to do to further his career irrespective of what it would do to their continued relationship. Pot, meet kettle. I completely get why people would choose to quit rather than continue doing the job Andy was forced to do. And there’s something to be said for prioritizing family, friends and relationships. But I didn’t see Nate or her friends being very supportive of her. That bugged me. It should be a two-way street. I would have preferred that they just leave out the final scene with Andy and Nate. I don’t think it added to the film.

REDR58

Good eye, George. That is indeed Tracie Thoms as “Lily” here who was in “Death Proof” as Kim Mathis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-QK1Y6g8LA She returns as Lily in The Devil Wears Prada 2. Stanley Tucci is excellent in “Big Night” (1996) which you should watch as it’s all about food! Serena in the Runway office is played by Brazilian model Gisele Bündchen who is the former wife of NLF Quarterback Tom Brady. She also dated Leonardo DiCaprio Jacqueline Follet, the editor-in-chief of the French edition of Runway who gets the job as Holt's new creative director is played by French actor Stéphanie Szostak. She was in “Iron Man 3” as “Ellen Brandt” a US Army soldier who lost an arm and then was recruited by A.I.M./Aldrich Killian to be part of the Extremis program which regrew her missing arm. Caitríona Balfe, who played Mollie Miles, the wife and eventual widow of Ken Miles (Christian Bale) in “Ford v Ferrari,” was supposed to be in this movie as one of the “clackers” and evidently just a brief shot of her shoe is all that remains: https://www.tiktok.com/@screenrantplus/video/7549621376303303944 Australian Simon Baker (Christian)’s generic American accent is flawless. The author off the book The Devil Wears Prada (2003) that the movie is based on, Lauren Weisberger, appears as the nanny of Miranda’s daughters and she can be seen on the train with the girls as they read the Harry Potter book. This was a first-time watch for me and not the sort of movie I'd watch on my own, but I'm glad I did!

Shibby

I had a completely different view. He stuck it out and supported her for almost a year while also expressing his concerns (you may call this whining but I disagree). When it was finally clear she was choosing the job over him he ended it. She then slept with someone the next day. She obviously wasn't really in love with him.

Amelie W

That's not thinking like a megalomaniacal jackass. You see, all that work you mention is going to be the assistants' problem, Miranda's job is just talking into the air about what she wants done and rip people apart if it takes too long. If she wants four things done at the same time (and she frequently does), sure it's a more complex operation to get eight people to do them, but it's still going to happen faster than if one person does all four while also answering the phone to receive further tasks and hating their life cause they've only had three hours of sleep in the last three days.

Jeff K.

Basically, using my favorite example from Game of Thrones, you can fake a cool looking Night's Watch cloak by dying some rugs from IKEA black, but you can't fake high end couture.

Happy Hanukkah

I'm going down to the crossroads With no Devil Well I'll make a deal.

Big Bang

It’s a brilliant movie, but one thing really grinds my gears the cheating. People try to defend it by saying they were 'on a break' or that the relationship was already over, but it still feels wrong. In the original book, this wasn't even how it went down. The director added it to show just how much the industry was changing Andy to show she lost her moral compass but the fact that the movie just moves past it like it never happened is so frustrating.

Happy Hanukkah

I was feeling bad about "Jacqueline Follet" losing an arm until you told me that "Mollie Miles" lost her *entire body* apart from her foot! :-)

REDR58

I tried to find her foot after watching that, but alas I could not!

The Calm During

If you're on a break, you're not together, no cheating. It can FEEL wrong, but that doesn't make it wrong. A break is a stoppage, a pause, so a break in a relationship is a pause or stoppage in the relationship with the idea to restart it at a later time. Breaks are dumb for that reason, because why not break up, or just continue to date, but hang out less? But a break means you're free for a period.

JayF

"We need to take a break" is a major red flag to me. IMO it means "I've met someone else that I'm interested in and need space to hook up with him to see if he's an improvement over you". When you think about it that's how it played out in Friends as Rachel had been getting friendly with her boss before "the break" then hooked up with him after it. Personally, if a woman says those words to me then it's a permanent break.

Andrew

I mean, you totally can. High end clothing is often made in the same factories and lower-tier clothing. Buying regular clothing and inserting fake brands on them would fake it well.

REDR58

Incidentally, the director of this movie, David Frankel, also directed 2 episodes of "Band of Brothers" and 6 of "Sex and the City."

Angela D. Mitchell

My issue is that Nate never supported her -- period. He negged her from the moment she got the job (he insults her the moment she tells him she got it), makes the deal with her that she will work for a year to see how far she can get -- then does nothing but make sad faces every time she works late (a CHEF in NYC -- this is hilarious) -- and eggs on her friends to further insult and not support her. Then when they go on a break, he basically compares her to a stripper and says she has no ethics when she did absolutely nothing wrong but be really competent at her job. Then in their final scene (when he is literally moving away to another city) he tells her she "sold her soul for shoes." Nate is scum. He never supported her for a minute.

Angela D. Mitchell

I agree -- it's absolutely wonderful, Brendan Fraser is terrific in it, as is Liz Hurley (who has never been more beautiful on film). And it's seriously such a little hidden gem (and a great remake of the original very funny Peter Cook/Dudley Moore movie).

Angela D. Mitchell

The first thing he does when she gets the job is insult her. The very first thing. It's a clue to his utterly crappy character for the rest of the film. And let's not forget the moment he snottily tells her she "sold her soul for shoes." It's so gross. Andy was nothing but a good person for the entire film.

Angela D. Mitchell

Why in the world should Andie refuse to go to Paris? She isn't scheming to double-cross Emily. She is simply super competent at her job, so much so that she is the best person for Miranda to bring. Yes, it's sad that Emily doesn't get to go, but that is not Andie's fault at all. Then Nate -- and then Miranda -- all act like Andie taking the trip was some kind of ethical test (Nate says she "sold her soul") while Miranda praises her for "betraying Emily" as if Andie taking a legitimate work trip is on the same level as Miranda yanking back a job she had already given Nigel! Andie did nothing wrong. She was talented and competent, expressed to Miranda that she felt Emily should go, and then when Miranda still didn't want to take Emily, she herself went to Emily and was honest about the situation. There was never a moment of betrayal. Can you imagine an entire movie centering on a male character being called soulless or compared to a stripper because he accepted an out of town work trip for his boss? It's hilarious. This is one of those "only in a movie about women would this even apply" moments.

Jeff K.

Petition for the next Meryl movie to be the Albert Brooks classic “Defending Your Life.” And then watch the TV show The Good Place. Meryl isn’t in that but it shares a lot of DNA with that movie.

gfixler

"Friend of a friend does the cover art." The cover art was done by Mary GrandPré. I went to art school when the books were still being published, and a few years in, Mary became an illustration teacher there. I wasn't an illustration major, so I wouldn't have any classes with her, but I saw her walking around campus pretty often. It was a cozy little school, only around 1000 students when I was there. Oh, and that guy is Jane, in the TV show The Mentalist. It's in a group of shows I realized was its own genre: uptight professional woman (cop, FBI, etc.) gets help from some weirdly brilliant dude, and ends up taking him on as a consultant for the rest of the show. The Mentalist (2008-2015): Patrick Jane, a former psychic medium who becomes a consultant for the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI), using keen observation and psychological insight to solve crimes, with CBI agent, Theresa Lisbon. Perception (2012-2015): Follows Dr. Daniel Pierce, a respected professor of neuroscience at a Chicago university who struggles with paranoid schizophrenia. His perceptual hallucinations often provide unconventional insights into criminal cases. FBI agent Kate Moretti, his former student, recruits him as a consultant Life (2007-2009): Centers on Detective Charlie Crews, portrayed by Damian Lewis, who is exonerated after DNA evidence proves his innocence. Having received a large settlement, Crews returns to the Los Angeles Police Department alongside his skeptical partner Dani Reese, played by Sarah Shahi. Castle (2009-2016): The series follows bestselling mystery novelist Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion), who partners with Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) of the NYPD after the police discover that a copycat killer is mimicking his novels. Instinct (2018-2019): The series centers on Dr. Dylan Reinhart (played by Alan Cumming), a brilliant psychology professor, author, and former CIA operative. When NYPD Detective Lizzie Needham (Bojana Novakovic) seeks his expertise to track a serial killer, Reinhart is pulled back into the world of criminal profiling. Lucifer (Fox 2016–2018; Netflix 2019–2021): Inspired by DC’s Vertigo comic Lucifer, the series centers on Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis), the fallen angel who abandons Hell to run Lux, an exclusive nightclub in Los Angeles. When a murder occurs outside Lux, Lucifer meets Detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German) and becomes her unlikely partner, exploring morality, redemption, and free will while assisting police investigations. Forever (2014-2015): The series centers on Dr. Henry Morgan, played by Ioan Gruffudd, an immortal medical examiner who has lived for over 200 years. Every time he dies, his body mysteriously regenerates in a nearby body of water. Partnered with NYPD detective Jo Martinez, Morgan uses his centuries of knowledge to solve crimes while seeking answers to his immortality. There are many more, like Fringe, The X-Files, White Collar, The Blacklist, Numb3ers, iZombie, and maybe the first example (sort of), Moonlighting. Some of these don't exactly follow the formula of uptight female crime solver + quirky male consultant, like Instinct's male consultant was gay, so the will-they-won't-they of most of these shows wasn't there, and White Collar was more a father/son feeling, with two male leads, and Numb3ers was a pair of actual brothers, but the whole "one is a professional, the other is the brilliant consultant who doesn't play by the rules!" (and often drives the rule-follower crazy, like an Odd Couple) thing is there in most. I'm a sucker for all of them.

Mark Alex Leach

It started so well, but partway through I found myself caring less and less about the characters until I turned it off. I know that goes against the majority view, but that's how it went for me.

Scott CineRam

I'm watching this reaction on my phone app, and the comment section seems to be missing. Instead, there's a section called "hype"...were you aware of this?

Tyler Foster

I'm sure other people may have already said this, but whether you agree with the logic she's using or not, Miranda's point is only made if the threat is included. What Miranda's trying to say is, if Andy believes she's taking a principled stand, which is that Miranda is being cruel to Emily and Andy thinks that's unacceptable, then that belief can't waver in the face of threats. It can't be okay for Miranda to be cruel to Emily IF Miranda just threatens Andy's career prospects. Miranda can do that any day, any time, anywhere, for any reason. Miranda could do that if Andy gets her Starbucks order wrong, if she wanted to. It's true that it's understandable that the caliber of threat is a huge, unbelievably risky thing for Andy to gamble on. But it doesn't mean anything to believe in the principle of something if all it takes is a big enough threat to abandon those principles. That's the point Miranda is making, and that's the lesson Andy learns at the end: if Miranda really does has the power to destroy Andy's future in journalism, that threat isn't gone when Andy throws her phone in the fountain and goes to get another job just because Miranda didn't literally vocalize it. In principle, Andy stands up to the same threat a second time and doesn't break.

Tyler Foster

Surprised you didn't mention that Big Night is also co-written and co-directed by Tucci.

Tyler Foster

Really need The Cable Guy. I already wanted The Cable Guy, but remembering the homage song that Jim Carrey sings in...the battle, well, I need to see Simone's reaction to that.

Christian Da Silva

Let’s suggest it in some comments from newer posted movies to see if we have a chance of them watching it.

Tyler Foster

Couple of additional things: I think George's bias against the fashion industry is muddying the waters: Andy leaving Runway is not about her leaving the fashion world behind, but about refocusing her ambitions on journalism. Although it is often cited as a joke that people read Playboy for the articles, some very great and important cultural and political writing has happened in magazines like Playboy, Vogue, Vanity Fair, etc. There is a part in the movie where someone is discussing the kinds of writers that Runway publishes, and Andy is enthusiastic because there *is* a Venn diagram crossover between what a magazine like Vogue or Runway would publish and the kinds of things she wants to work on. The point of the ending is not that Andy should never want to work at a fashion magazine again, but that she does not want to *become* Miranda. She could ascend to the same position at a similar type of magazine in the future, but as long as she doesn't treat her employees the way Miranda does, then she will still be following the principles she learns at the end of the film. Also, re: costumes: my guess is that armor is made by the props department and not the costuming department. The line can be fuzzy, but for example, rings and necklaces: costumes or props? Prosthetics are definitely not costumes, as makeup has its own department as well. Bottom line: my guess is that anything that has to be tailored and fitted lands in the costumes department. Armor would be sort of one-size-fits-all and more generic, with maybe some broad "larger" and "smaller" variants.
