You mentioned during Sopranos recently that you were thinking of getting back to Scream... Trust me when I say now is the time to watch Scream 3. after THIS movie. that's all I'm saying. oh and while I'm at it.... Kevin Smith did the intro for my Twitch channel. You can see it here --->https://www.twitch.tv/djkento

Really interesting how George seems to fit perfectly for Silent Bob

Matrim

“Newark is in New York” So, you have chosen death.

*looks at camera*

OddThomas

This is my favourite Kevin Smith, after this he just repeats himself. Although Yoga Hosers is so awful it's kind of fun

maikeru

the thumbnail ahaha

Robert Cooper

So apparently during filming Jay Mewes kept trying to score with Carrie Fisher, to the point she almost quit.

djKENTO

Phantoms is a pretty terrible ghost movie with Ben Affleck and Liev Schrieber. The joke here is that Ben Affleck knows it's bad and the fact they're calling it great but don't like Good Will Hunting is the joke.

Lanny Stanfield

I'm just here for the "Convenience Store" song.

mcfierce24

Love that George recognized The Buddy Christ before Carrie Fisher! 😂

mcfierce24

Heather Graham turned down the part of Justice because she didn't think anybody could be attracted to Jay's character.

JBK405

Yes, Ben & Matt have always given Kevin Smith the credit for getting "Good Will Hunting" actually made. That's one reason -- besides just being friends anyway -- that they've always been willing to appear in his work even after their own careers took off. My enjoyment of this movie has gone through wide swings over the years. When I was young I loved it because of all the fart jokes and stupidity, then when I got older and had seen Kevin Smith's more serious films I looked down on this one for being filled with fart jokes and stupidity, but I think I've swung back around to enjoying it again. They're having fun, there's wittiness in between the farts, and it's never trying to be anything except what it is. I can be okay with that.

s0rd3z

Snoochie Boochies Boo Boo Kitty F**k

djKENTO

this was released by Dimension films which was owned by the Weinsteins. It was basically where they'd stuff that didn't fit the Miramax brand. action, horror and comedies, usually with a lower budget. stuff like GrindHouse, The Crow, Equilibrium...

djKENTO

okay... yall REALLY need to watch Purple Rain.

Adam Vialpando

Actually that convenience store song can be partially heard back in Clerks. Near the end when Jay and Silent Bob enter the store before leaving Jay can be heard singing a version of it.

Hombredave

Phantoms is a 1998 horror film starring Ben Affleck. They reference alot of Ben and Matt Damon movies in the Good Will Hunting scene. When Ben says, "whatever gay serial killers who ride horses and like to play golf touchy feely picture" he's alluding to 'The Talented Mr Ripley (1999), 'All the Pretty Horses' (2000) and The Legend of Bagger Vance' (2000). And Matt calls out Ben's movies 'Forces of Nature' (1999), Bounce (2000) and 'Reindeer Games' (2000)

D.A.V.E.

Something tells me they're not going to watch Phantoms. 🤣 They should, Affleck was the BOMB in Phantoms. Seriously I like that movie.

marioaintsuper

This was initially supposed to be the end of the View Askewniverse with the nice touch of God closing the book at the very end

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Been a favourite fun-time movie ever since it came out for friends and I. “Apple sauce, bitch” and “what a lovely tea party” remain banter constants to this day. The meta jokes and guest casting all work splendidly… and for loving movies that have bad ratings I and many others live in the camp of adoring “Kung Pow Enter The Fist” if RT scores are anything to go by? Glad y’all had fun with this one and here’s to “Clerks II” if everybody’s keen ☺️🤙🏻

OddThomas

Phantoms is a GREAT Dean Koontz horror novel that got turned into a godawful Scream rip-off movie starring Ben Affleck. If ever a film needed remaking it's Phantoms. Speaking of Scream, when are we getting reactions to the sequels?

Emptysea93

Knowing Eliza Dushku is a therapist now makes her entire role in this 1000x funnier.

s0rd3z

Clerks II gets my support, I really liked it but I'm a degenerate. I actually haven't watched clerks III, I figured they would get there some day and I will watch that one with them.

Matt88g

Trivia mentions jon favreau and vince vaughn, who became good friends on the Sean Astin movie Rudy, who went on to make a bunch of movies together much like Ben and Matt

Warmachine1228

Mark Hamil called this the funniest script he ever read. He thought he REALLY wanted to do the movie however he thought George Lucas would never approve it. As it turns out, George Lucas only wanted 1 change to the script... the color of the bong sabers. 😂

s0rd3z

I liked Yoga Hosers kind of for that schlock b movie bad vibe. I liked Clerks II personally but it doesn't reinvent the wheel or anything just continues that clerks vibe.

Lloyd Franklin

I'm glad to see you've changed the colour of the viewer count. The old colour was difficult to see on some thumbnails.

Matt88g

Jay and silent Bob reboot came out in 2019, it’s full of cameos too but a lot of them are from Kevin Smiths podcast and reality show, a lot less fun than this movie

Warmachine1228

Kevin Smith is close friends with Robert Rodriguez and Quinton Tarantino so he screened the movie for them after it was finished. They both loved it but Tarantino had one note... he said it was great but why wasn't he in it?! He said you could've called me! 😂

Cartoons ReAct

Soo now you guys need to watch the 3 Evening with Kevin Smith Q&A, even if it is on your own time instead of Patreon

Kevin Cormier

Probably an age gap thing, but I was still a little surprised they whiffed on seeing Judd Nelson.

Mike FromOz

Another top-notch thumbnail! Yeah, this isn't the most highbrow of films, but it still has its entertaining parts. I've not seen the reboot, but to be honest, I think Clerks 2 is the best end of the road situation for Kevin Smith films. A lot of ones after that are just not good, and really derivative back to his earlier days, but just worse. If he has something new that's good, I'd give him another go, but there is a long stretch of really bad ones under his belt.

Andrew

I saw this movie several years ago but watching it now I realized that the plot is very similar to Pee Wee's Big Adventure and there is a red bike on the Hollywood lot scene. I assume this was intentional. BTW they should definitely watch Pee Wee's Big Adventure.

Jeff I.

Y'all have to react to the bloopers from this movie now. They're just as funny as anything in the actual movie! They're on YT.

funky weapon

this movie was basically an excuse for Kevin and his friends to hang out and get paid. pretty much everyone in it did it because he asked, and for scale. Kevin and Ben are pretty tight, so much so that Ben sold Kevin his house in the Hollywood hills way back in the 90s at cost. Kevin is also the one who talked Ben into doing Daredevil (that's Affleck's favorite comic book hero), and Ben also badgered Kevin into writing a "serious movie" after this called Jersey Girl. it was a flop, like many of Kevin's movies, but it's actually a good romcom with a lot of heart. at the time the media was turning on Ben Affleck as a movie star. not sure why. something to do with dating Jennifer Lopez and Gigli, I think. It's hard for people to fathom now but Kevin Smith was in the same breath as Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez as up-and-coming auteur directors around time Reservoir Dogs, Clerks, and Desperado came out. they all had their movies bought by Miramax (the Weinstein Brothers) and that's how they all met and knew each other. The two angry nerds at the end are Brian Johnson and Walt Flanagan (the ones angry about the movie). they're childhood friends of Kevin Smith and the guys who introduced him to Jason Mewes. Walt Flanagan draws almost all of Kevin's comics and runs the Secret Stash comic shop back in Burbank, New Jersey, which is where they're all from. Brian and Walt had/have a podcast called Tell'em Steve-Dave where they basically rambled for two hours about whatever came to mind. it was hilarious and easily the highlight of Smod, the podcast network Kevin put together in the early 10s. That podcast network is also where the idea for Kevin's horror comedy "TUSK" was born. the episode in question with him and producer Scott Mosier (Willem Black in Clerks, as well as the guy angry about the store being closed due to hockey on the roof) is fucking hilarious. TUSK is also fucking hilarious. that and Red State (Kevin's horror movie) are the only two movies he's made since going independent I'd recommend wholeheartedly. his career really, really suffered once he became a pothead, but he's turned it around in the last few years. apologies for the bible here but I've been a Kevin Smith fan since I saw this movie back in 2002 so watching you guys tackle his comedies has been a treat. I'll say if you want to end your run of Kevin Smith movies, end it with Clerks 2. it's a comedy with a lot of heart and some genuine moments.

Jeremiah Hill

Jennifer Schwalbach who played Missy in the girl gang was Kevin Smith’s wife

OddThomas

"I don't like dem apples, Will. What are we gonna do??"

rictus grin

as far as i know she still is

Young Blood Priest

One of the pho-Charlie’s Angels, the one with the ponytails, was Kevin Smith’s baby’s mother before later becoming his wife/better half.

funky weapon

to add onto your first point, when Ben and Matt wrote the script for Good Will Hunting they actually asked Kevin to direct. Kevin, knowing his limitations, said "hell no I'll fuck it up," but he passed the script along to the Weinsteins, who loved it, optioned it, and the rest is history.

Cc Decc

I think Jay and Silent Bob are kind of peak Millennial culture. Well...not peak. But just one of those things extremely associated with one generation and one moment. Boomers don't get them. Gen Alpha has never heard of them. But for peeps coming of age in the 90s and 00s they are kind of like Beavis and Butthead, or Wayne and Garth. The sad (I dunno, maybe sad, is it?) thing is that with fragmented culture and social media algorithms divying everybody up, I'm not sure there will be any more generation wide meme characters going forward. In 10 years they'll all be AI anyway.

m

that pun was frigging weak, I almost punched an old lady in disgust

Will Sofer

…What are you talking about? They were married before they had children.

Frank

Please watch Clerks 2. There's a running joke in the movie that might make you both rage quit watching (in a funny way not because it's anything malicious) I need you two to watch it just for that.

Young Blood Priest

Ok I stand corrected. Man! You really got me told! I’ll go in the corner and cry now. Is that ok?

Cody Cameron

jay and silent bob reboot is fun and if you haven't seen Mike it has lot going for it MIke.

Will Sofer

“The Jay and Silent Bob Reboot” and “Clerks 3” were honestly two of the most terrible movies that I’ve ever seen. Whatever he once had, he clearly doesn’t have it anymore.

Will Sofer

And married to a venture capitalist.

“You and me are like Superman. We’re from the streets.”

Josh

It's also because they forgot to thank Kevin when they got their Oscar. he jokingly gave shit to them for years for it.

Matt O'Keefe

This movie and the year it came out reminds me that everyone is 25 years older now.

Matthew Mosley

OH YEAH! ... and now the wait for CLERKS 2 begins ...

Jeb Manning

With you geeking out over Mark Hamill, I so badly wish you guys would start TV reactions to Batman the Animated Series. His Joker is so good. Probably the top contender for the best adapted version of the character from comics.

Denashi

On a positive note, about Jason Mewes and his addiction: he's been clean for many years now. He's happily married and has two kids!

Raven Blackrose

Great movie, great reaction. Time for...clerks 2?

Stephanie Bedworth

That was Scott William Winters, reprising the role that he played in Good Will Hunting.

Alexander Kirichenko

Now clerks 2, then 3 (you can skip jay and silent bob 2 and yoga hosers)

Philipp Roensch

This one is a classic, for us also in the dub, full of insiders and insider jokes. Clearly Kevin Smith had some beef with Miramax, but also favors to pull to make this unique comedy. Jay and Silent Bob Reboot is also fine, if you like references like this, it is more of that. Would not see it as essential, but you could put it up for vote.

Arthur 'Two Sheds' Jackson

And YES, that was Wes Craven!! (RIP) You guys need to watch the original The Hills Have Eyes!! 👀

Yeah lmao fuck RT, rotten tomatoes is absolute garbage, mostly because it is an arbitrary slice through some few, often unbearably useless critics' half-assed views on a genre they never meant to vibe with. You want some sort of meta aggregator; IMDB is still the gold standard. Far from perfect, nothing ever can encapsulate subjective enjoyment properly - but the RT system is such conceptual dumbfuckery, it deserves to be trashed every way along the road. "100% fresh" yeah no shit, only your two aunts wrote a blogpost about your dumb video diary. There is obviously still review bombing and similar nonsense throwing somewhat of a wrench into the machinery, but I think people don't appreciate enough how much we can compensate clear outlier votes with some simple heuristics. Hell, most sites outright weigh the 1s and 10s way, way below, grade along a biased bell curve. Which makes sense, review bombers don't get to push their movie, hypeboys don't get to hype every cashgrab blindly... for me, it works incredibly well. Something like "movies 5+ if I am really into it, but likely it's doodoo," 6+ is Kung Pow, for example, currently sitting at a 6.2, which in my mind translates to "a big chunk of uptight little dingdongs aren't going to get it," and everything beyond 7 has to try really, really hard to ruin a good time I am very likely about to have, even if I don't particularly care about, say, the actors or the subject matter. Ironically, 8 and up gets a bit more muddled again; there seems to be about a fifty-fitfy chance for it to either be a truly great movie, or some nostalgia, classics, cult-bait that really, uh, "insist upon themselves." Twelve Angry Men vs. Godfather, for me personally. Shows skew differently; audiences willing to sit through even a short season are more committed than those who watch one movie, meaning that it's more difficult for them to keep audiences hooked - or at least exactly as entertained as with good movies. Then again, really great shows exceed most movie ratings, the highs of a fantastic ending like BB's are apparently higher than what even the best movies offer. Which also makes sense, cross-seasonal payoffs is like Marvel sticking the Infinity War/Endgame landing after like 10-15 consecutive bangers. 7 is a matter of taste, if you're into it, you might love it (Wet Hot American Summer TV Show somehow comes to mind), 8 is still no guarantee but high likeliness for a good time... and high 8s and 9s are for universally liked stuff. Metacritic is much better than RT where applicable, btw. Still not really that useful, aggregators focusing on "professional" outlets just are missing the point of it all: nobody fucking gives a shit about self-proclaimed critics, lmao

Monica Alarcon

I hope you do complete the viewaskewniverse with Clerks 2, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot and Clerks 3.... The Time was a band started by Prince and Morris Day. Prince wrote and performed almost all of the music in their albums with Morris Day on vocals and sometimes drums. The band was mostly for live performances but they were all really good musicians.

Cody Cameron

think i know what joke. I am sure they will take it in stride

Cody Cameron

to be fair with mustache hard to recognize and last them I think they would have seen him was in The Breakfast Club and that was a while ago

David Lonewolf Wright

It has been too long since I have rewatched this gem. A fun Kevin Smith film outside of his Jersey-verse, with some familiar actors is Zack and Miri Make a Porno. I think you guys would get a kick out of it.

2026-09-13 17:00 I love the 1998 Godzilla which has a 20% on Rotten Tomatoes. It's one of my top 10 favourite films.
2026-05-02 20:21

Jay Johnson

kind of sad how many of the people making cameos in this film have since died. and then there is how some of the jokes/references have shifted given how things have come to light with Miramax/Weinstein and Bill Cosby. (like Chris Rock's character talking about the girls in his trailer "auditioning" for a part in his movies)

Sporty Taco

I wouldn't say it's completely outside. Dustin Long's character makes an appearance in Reboot, so it is loosely tied in.

Blkm44

Great reaction, I love this movie. Just FYI The “House Party” movies that Chris Rock mentions is a series of comedy films from the 80’s and 90’s that star rap duo Kid n Play and Martin Lawerence. You should consider checking out the first one some day.

kbobravo

I learned this joke the hard way when I was a teenager

If you are looking for other movies with orangatans and Clint Eastwood try "Every which why but loose" and "Any which way you can". Another great Kevin Smith movie is Zach and Miri make a porno.

Not to spoil anything but I did hear some spoilers from Clerks 3 and I refuse to watch it. He should have left it at Clerks 2 which was one of my fave smiths movies.

This was great! I hope you continue the View Askewniverse!

Sorry, guys, it's "strike'" back, not "strikes". Also: Simone's hair looks great!

Kevin Cormier

Oh, I totally get it. It just stung a little, haha

Michael Kemmet

The website the movie makes fun of(MoviePoopShoot) is based on Ain't It Cool News. I guess it's still around, but it was a fairly major site back in the late-90s into the 2010s. One of the things it did was help lift the Alamo Drafthouse theaters from a relatively minor couple theaters to a well-known brand. The website hosted a movie festival there called Butt-Numb-a-Thon(probably the reason for the "poop shoot" name). It became a major festival that spread knowledge of the Alamo Drafthouse far beyond central Texas. The website had already significantly declined in popularity by the early 2010s, but it completely collapsed in 2017 after multiple allegations of SH and SA came to light regarding the creator and owner of AICN, Harry Knowles.

Michael Kemmet

George wasn't far off with his comment about the comic book store in the beginning just being Kevin Smith's collection. It was actually Kevin Smith's comic book store in Red Bank, New Jersey: Jay & Slient Bob's Secret Stash. The shop has moved to a new location down the block, but it's still there. You can actually see both locations in Google Street View. The picture of the current location was taken in 2025, but the area in front of the old location has been closed off from traffic, so that picture is from 2019 before the move.

Jay Johnson

brings back memories of a young Ali Larter and whipped cream

Jay Johnson

did he really have a beef with Miramax (at the time), or was he just poking fun at the studio like he was poking fun at his own movies and those of the other actors in them?

Eric Wilson

So they also made a clerks cartoon it is wildly regarded to be horrible because the network made them make it more clean than the movies but it is like one season and I think it is hilarious. You guys should try it for fun.

CommanderBrownCoat

Y'all got to watch "An Evening With Kevin Smith" you get to hear all sorts of behind-the-scenes stories, like how he met Jason Mew's or how he met his wife, who was the red head in the gad girl group!

AVATAR-X

I don't know if it was in the Youtube edit, but in the full reaction Simone does say, "Mark Hamill is an amazing voice actor! We gotta watch, Batman the Animated Series."

Simon Pegged Me

When Jay says that the Time's music was handed down to them by God, he's referencing Prince. We wrote the music for the Time under a pseudonym.

AVATAR-X

Simone: I'm not sure if you've seen it, but Eliza Dushku did headline the Mutant Enemy series Dollhouse (2009), following her roles in Buffy and Angel. The show was a short-lived (27 episodes over 2 seasons) sci-fi, mystery drama.

Jay Johnson

Oh, and Magnolia is my favorite film ever made. F you, early 2000s Kevin Smith.

Jeb Manning

Cool 😎 I hope they do. It's such a good show and honestly one of the best comic book shows ever made.

REDR58

My ripped Blu-ray copy has the "Miramax" cityscape with illuminated windows forming the letters animated logo preceding "Dimension Films."

REDR58

Incidentally, post-production sound for this movie was done by Skywalker Sound (A division of Lucas Digital).

REDR58

I didn't recognize him either and I'm older than The Breakfast Club! I figured it was a cameo and then saw his name in the credits.

REDR58

If you say it came out "a quarter-century ago" it sounds even more distant.

REDR58

His brother, Dean Winters was "Avi" in "John Wick" who kept asking for a gun at the end of the movie. He does a lot of TV and some movies but is probably most well-known in the US for playing "Mayhem" in the Allstate Insurance Company TV commercials since 2010: www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPTAFWyQZus

REDR58

Yep. "Land of the Lost" was a 1974 live action kids' show that played on Saturday mornings: www.youtube.com/watch?v=-J5PNGGLgKI

When Jay and Bob get accosted by the cop in front of the store, Jay calls the cop “Serpico.” Serpico is a reference to the 1973 Al Pacino movie that you should watch. Aside from the reference to “The Fugitive” with the dam, “Provasic” (or “Provasik” with a “k” in this movie) is the name of the fictional drug in “The Fugitive” that had its experimental trial results faked. As soon as I heard that word, I racked my brain figuring that one out! “Provasic” in “The Fugitive”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycCA9K3N9NY Incidentally, someone has created a spoof website for the fictional maker of “Provasic,” Devlin MacGregor: https://devlinmacgregor.com The “E! New Daily” TV reporter with the glasses, Steve Kmetko, is playing himself as he was a real reporter for that network. He also played himself in “Zoolander.” Likewise, the “E!” network female reporter outside of the Miramax studios, Jules Asner, also plays herself. The Miramax guard Gordon is played by Diedrich Bader who was the next door apartment neighbor “Lawrence” of Ron Livingston’s “Peter” in “Office Space.” He also played “Red” in “Napoleon Dynamite” and was in “EuroTrip” as a mugger. You missed the Daredevil cameo (played by “Daredevil” director-to-be, Mark Steven Johnson) in red fighting The Hand soldiers/ninjas when Jay and Silent Bob came out of the studio building with the orangutan in the bike basket. George, you mentioned liking “Samurai Cop.” That movie features red-headed actor Roberta Jean Oppenheimer, who had a memorable appearance in that movie under the mononym "Cameron,” and she plays various background and non-speaking uncredited characters in the 4th through 7th seasons of TNG. You can see a picture of her with Robert Z'Dar from “Samurai Cop” and another of her in her TNG costume here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Treknobabble/s/RF4EOEc8AG The “gay people” disclaimer at the end of the movie: “No gay people were harmed during the making of this film (however, some were used as test dummies in the creative process). Anybody who uses the insults contained in this film on any gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or heterosexual person --real, perceived or imaginary-- is a total dumbass!” Edit: forgot to post the link for Cameron’s photos!

I've been a huge fan of Kevin Smith movies since I first saw Mallrats and loved this movie when it came out and I have grown to love it even more as a time capsule of pre-9/11 pop culture nostalgia (this was released the summer before it all went downhill). I'm also active listener to his podcasts and have been to several shows including when he does his film release tours which is how he funds his movies these days. Jay and Silent Bob Reboot was released in 2019 and he did a tour where he premiered the movie and did Q&A after which I attended one of the shows. I loved it and hope you guys get to it along with Clerks II and III

REDR58

Agreed, 51 here. How did that happen???

Matt O'Keefe

I guess we forget that is how time works.

ShittyShittyGameGang

If you do eventually get to clerks 3 and Jay & silent Bob reboot I think you should add Zack & Miri make a porno to the list before you get to those 2. It's not a View Askew movie BUT it is connected to the View Askewniverse. And I don't remember which one if not both (clerks 3 & j&sb reboot) it has some connections to. Also idk if yall know this or not but the Canadian show Degrassi is connected to Kevin Smith & Jay & Silent Bob as well. Kevin Smith films a Jay & Silent Bob movie at Degrassi Highschool and I'm pretty sure he has a romantic storyline with one of the characters.

My favorite of the comedy VA films. "Chasing Amy" is my overall favorite, but this is a close second overall. Yes, the lasers may have parodied "Charlie's Angels" but the seminal butt arching lasers moment is "Entrapment" with Catherine Zeta-Jones during the peak of her hotness. There's an extremely famous "Planet of the Apes" spoiler reference in the movie, which I assume y'all already know about. I think there's a small "Blues Brothers" reference when they place the ashtray/garbage can in front of the door when being chased on the set. "Purple Rain" should be on y'alls polls if not for the quality of the movie but for the cultural relevance. Everyone should know Morris Day and the Motherfucking Time. All of the future VA films are pretty good to some degree. You can skip "Tusk" and "Red State" and I won't cry. Those were awful, coming from a Kevin Smith fanboy.

The girls in the van (Missy, Sissy, Chrissy, etc.) were on their way to boulder to "give Provasik a piece of their minds," as members of their local chapter of SAAC, Students Against Animal Cruelty. Chrissy tells them about the problems with Provasik Pharmaceuticals. Provasic is the name of the [fictional] drug in The Fugitive, created by [fictional] Devlin MacGregor Pharmaceuticals, which, double checking myself online, has shown me that someone created a fake page for it: https://devlinmacgregor.com/provasic/ The Reddit page about it talks about several Easter eggs: https://www.reddit.com/r/InternetIsBeautiful/comments/161fa1q/someone_has_created_a_whole_corporate_web/
