This is in my opinion the best Will Smith's movie. He should've won an Oscar for this. Also, I'd really encourage you to watch Seven Pounds, also from Will. Get ready to cry harder.

sb

This film (2006), I Am Legend (2007) and Seven Pounds (2008)..Will Smith managed to make me shed tears in all 3 films. It was Will's "tear jerk era". 😢😭

They have found an upper limit to what income makes you happy. You'd think it depends on the cost of living in your area, but apparently it sits at a pretty universal $70,000 per year. Might have gone up due to the inflation in the years since I read this paper, but still, as someone whose disability benefits and rent supplements amount to a little under 20,000, boy I'd like to taste that upper limit. And, you know they say if you're paying for a product you don't have a job, you are the victim of a pyramid scheme? Hecking bone density scanners, guy had to be really desperate to get into that business. . . I have a 1x1x1 Rubik's cube, aka "very easy difficulty." I like to pick it up and turn it around to say I "solved" it. Usually cracks people up after a moment, when they realize what this large dice with colors instead of numbers is.

There are definitely free shelters, I’ve never heard of a paid shelter but it could be a thing

blerbaberpaterb

......thats only for working class people with the assumption of still needing to work i think.....the real happiness wealth brings imo is free time.....to having a choice of working or not working.....or to make your work about passion rather than a necessity.....i've known really rich people, like million+ per year level, say things like "ill take a couple of months off between clients"..... 70k a year cannot ever afford to think that way..... to just.... have a few months of free time to travel or pursuit passion..... ....edit: i looked up the 70k thing, it was from 2010 and is considered even at the time to be outdated and misinterpreted...... its a figure given by people thinking it would cover their bills and rent and maybe mortgage..... those people still had average civilian working class point of view, that in their ideal world they still pay rent or mortgages lol.....theyre not thinking in the insanely wealthy of "oh temperatures outside my comfort zone for the next X months, ill go to one of my mother estates in to winter/summer"

Amelie W

Yeah, I have an average civilian point of view where if I got 70,000 dollars a year I would be independently wealthy in about seven years. Literally, with that kind of money I could live comfortably on the interest from my basic savings account and buy anything I wanted that you can buy with money. Just because people are able to spend much more than that I don't think it makes them more happy.

REDR58

Paid men’s shelters do indeed exist. Relatively local to me, for example. there is “Philly House” in Philadelphia which offers a 12-month “transitional housing” program called the “Next Level Program” which requires participating individuals to have a full-time job or “income from other sources.” : https://www.phillyhouse.org/what-we-do/mens-homeless-shelter-and-housing

You should definitely pop Seven Pounds on the schedule if you are looking for more peak Will Smith from the peak Will Smith era. Also you should watch Hitch!

Christian Da Silva

I second this. This is the third comment I read about this movie. It's incredibly good and emotional. Hopefully George takes note of it.

Ashton Lewis

Well they mentioned at the end they were looking for more Will Smith dramatic roles to watch, so I think we have a good chance of seeing it on the schedule :)

Chris Henderson

Y'all should give Ali a watch it's Will's Malcolm X.

Pitaa Mielessa

Sheckley is so underrated. You should check out "Options", it's meta and fourth-wall breaking before Rick and Morty and Douglas Adams. He also wrote with Roger Zelazny often, another mindbending writer. You should check out Zelazny if you didn't already, if you are into fantasy.

Tim Campbell

The real Chris Gardner, the guy this movie is about, appears at the end scene of the movie, as Will and Jayden walks across the street, one lone man crosses the opposite side, and it fades to black. That was Chris Gardner.

Erik D

I'm slapping myself for forgetting that this movie existed.

Stephen Morris

"7 Pounds" is another Will Smith Drama

Maxi

I guess the establishing shots of The Golden Gate Bridge and Coit Tower didn't do enough to establish that we were in San Francisco lol

Maxi

As a broke college kid, I sold plasma to make some extra money. Thankfully I was already pretty used to the process being A neg, giving doubles whenever I donated blood. Same thing, but in reverse.

Maxi

Someone doesn't watch the Trivia section lol

Kevin

Yall have to do Hitch!

Cc Decc

And after Hitch, Paul Blart: Mall Cop!

Christian Da Silva

King Richard is the movie that gave him his only Oscar. Pretty good in my opinion but I'd rather you watch Seven Pounds. That one's a must.

Christian Da Silva

You know one thing I really love about this movie? It doesn't rely on the cliche of "being rich is bad". Every single poor people in this movie played the enemy: his wife leaving him, the crazy guy who took his machine, the hippie lady who stole the other one, even his friend who still owes him 14 bucks until today. All of the rich guys, being millionaires or even billionaires in some cases, were incredibly understanding towards him. Gave him every opportunity within reason and treated him well. If you think about it, 5 dollars for a rich guy like the boss is like 5 cents for a normal person: it's easily forgetable that you owe that amount of money when it really is worth nothing to you compared to your income. The fact that the old man had the decency of returning him the money speaks volumes about his character alongside his "friend". Now, I don't know if that happened in real life, but movie wise, I feel like this is one of those few movies that don't show the billionaire guy as the antagonist who just wants to suck all you have. This and the old sweet guy from Jurassic Park.

Adam X. Luke

bleergh, 'pursuit of slappyness'. I'm skipping this one guys. 👎

JayF

Seen it. 1:55 of deeply depressing movie with a 5 minute payoff at the end. I didn't watch it with you. It's a good movie but I don't need that vibe right now. Glad you both seemed to have enjoyed it though. :)

PureGonzo

Yes, Seven Pounds!

Ken

Hitch over Seven Pounds cause laughing is better than crying :P

FranciscoGios

I myself had to live in my car, because lack of money but did had a job and I tell you it is not easy. Never went to any of those piggy pig payments and had to stretch my paycheck week by week to be able to eat. So yeah that restroom scene was hitting close to home but you had to tough it up and have a positive attitude so you won’t end up in jail or worst.

dys

One thing NYC does relatively well is that the city is legally required to provide enough shelter space for all homeless persons. You will still see a person sleeping in the street or on the subway here and there, it's by no means *good*, but it is not nearly like the large camps of people you will see all over the city in San Francisco (at least when I was last in SF about 10 years ago).

dys

In an expensive city like SF, you can live on that as an individual if you're frugal, but if you need to support a family on that you are definitely going to be stressing about money in a way that will eat into your happiness

REDR58

If you’re watching a movie set in the US and don’t know what state it is and can't recognize buildings or landmarks, particularly in city scenes, try looking at car license plates for the state name. While discussing what the Chinese guy (George Cheung) sweeping outside the daycare was saying to Gardner, you guys inadvertently talked right over the explanation of “HappyYness” vs “HappIness” as it was misspelled on the wall outside of the daycare: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-jXE-VvZqw George Cheung, who is a Hong Kong-American actor and stuntman, was also in “Big Trouble in Little China,” “Weekend at Bernie’s,” “Sneakers,” “Lethal Weapon 4,” “Rush Hour,” “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me” and “Mission: Impossible III,” You have seen Kurt Fuller, who played Walter Ribbon who took Gardner and his son to the football game, in “The Running Man,” “Ghostbusters II,” “Wayne’s World,” “Independence Day,” and “Scary Movie.” Here is an interesting article and behind-the-scenes photos of filming in the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) underground locations: https://www.bart.gov/50years/stories/3 Regarding the possibility of Linda’s sister or other family members helping with her son, one should never assume that family members can unexpectedly help you out with a child. It is a *lot* to ask of people, family or otherwise. I did it with my mom for my sister to babysit her first daughter for 16 months and it was not easy. When Linda leaves the apartment for the last time, and Chris spends a few moments looking down the staircase after her, you can see a handle on the wall next to Chris. That is to unlock the exterior door of the apartment. A good comedy/drama with Smith is Six Degrees of Separation (1993).

Nathan Jasper

For more Will Smith drama films, I highly recommend Six Degrees of Separation, The Legend of Bagger Vance, Seven Pounds, Focus, Concussion, and Emancipation.

Twiska Brand

If you want another good dramatic role of Will Smith, you should watch Concussion.

Kieran Hawk

As for the whole "money can't buy you happiness" thing, I've heard that it's true, but also that it's better to cry in a BMW than on a bicycle. Sounds about right.

Stee Gray

As many will surely say, if you want a truly heartbreaking and stellar dramatic performance from Will Smith, you need to watch "Seven Pounds"

Mark Polo

On the topic of dramatic Will Smith roles. Seven Pounds (2008) It's been at least a decade since I watched it but from what I can remember: I liked it.

REDR58

George, you seemed surprised at the cost of the 1979 308 GTS (possibly 1978?) Ferrari that Garder was admiring. A car like that in good condition would go for about double today, around $60,000-$70,000 US ($82,000-$95,000 CAN). It's my favorite Ferrari.

Philipp Roensch

Well, my dad passed, so this is definitly doing it for me. We never had to struggle as much, but he definitly had to work a lot to keep 4 kids fed. Money does not guarentee happiness, but poverty is stressful, unhealthy, if not deadly. I can do a Rubiks cube though, slow buty steady, memorized the moves a while ago. I'm not for just leaning on Wall Street and saleman gambles, but Chris clearly is good with that and this path optimizes talent meeting opertunity. The problem is, even with working hard and providing, that is not all that a family needs. I love that Chris is putting staying with his kid first.

fwfwfwfwf wfwfw

i believe the movie "7 pounds" is another drama movie by will smith

TechJJ

Wow looks like George got hit hard and "too close to home". This film always give me the motivation and appreciation, and I show it to my teenage kids (entitled Gen Z) that they had it good. Seven Pound hits just as hard.

sb

Yea, Hancock was really good. It didn't make me cry though. Honorable mention to Collateral Beauty (2016) starring Will Smith which also made me cry.

fwfwfwfwf wfwfw

cant believe i almost forgot about "Hitch"! I loved "Hitch"!

fwfwfwfwf wfwfw

will smith is just a great actor In my opinion

Angela D. Mitchell

George, I've definitely experienced those tough times. And Simone, your story about the plums was heartbreaking! I grew up super poor in the deep South (half the time, when we lived with my mother) -- poor enough that my Mom would have to drop us off at state children's homes occasionally when we'd been evicted and just go off and work double shifts as a waitress and secretary for a few weeks, then come back and get us, etc. I couldn't sleep even as a kid because I was always worried about rent or food. So the little ways even a few dollars were shown to be life and death here really hit me hard. I still remember feeling sick every time we had a field trip because it meant I would have to have enough money to buy fast food at lunch, and still remember being ecstatic when I was able to buy a burger for the 50 cents I had in my wallet. Will Smith was terrific in this, and for me it's his best performance.

Dan Holmes

I miss the old Will Smith

Dan Holmes

I'll never forget watching that final moment in the theater as he leaves the building crying... The whole theater was clapping and cheering, nobody does that anymore... or maybe movies don't make us feel the need to cheer anymore... either way it's sad.

Flerb

i brought up the pc vs mac commercials to someone recently and they gave me the same blank stare while my ancient bones crumbled to dust.

Tim Beers

If you wanted something that’s almost like a mirror reflection of this movie, check out Aftersun.

Drew Acheson

George, I'd be interested to get your feedback on the book There Is No Anti-Memetic Division

Drew Acheson

Another good dramatic role for Will Smith is Seven Pounds, but be warned it's more of a tear jerker than this movie.

ShittyShittyGameGang

I know others have said it but I'm gonna say it too, ya gotta watch Seven Pounds

Life in the cave of Garanoga

Re-watching this one again. Definitely get "The Professor and the Madman" (2019) on the polls. George would love it. It's about the creation of the modern dictionary and it's just an amazing movie with big star power. I still can't figure out why it didn't get more attention when it came out, was my movie of the year that year.
