Star Trek Day!

Gary Brown

Simone and george , I don't know if u saw my comment from a recent reaction

Tinfoilnation

Two of my all-time favorite episodes... back to back? 'Tis a good morning. :)

Data Cable

They should check out The Last Starfighter, if only to see Kay E. Kuter on the other side of a conversation with a giant holographic head. "Qpid" aired less than 2 months before Prince of Thieves premiered, so was probably riding the pre-buzz. It just now occurred to me that Sir Guy's role would have made much more sense as Prince John, who wasn't in Prince of Thieves. I wonder if they just changed the name for that reason.

Gary Brown

Part 2--- but Ashleigh's channel is in serious trouble. she got 2 strikes recently and is obviously freakin' out. I've been in touch with Mr. Movies from You.Me and the Movies. I thought i'd reach out to yall. It sounds like she's preparing for the worst and hoping for the best. If u go to ashleigh's X account . go down a few posts , and stop at the one with her in a black shirt and says "Not Good" above it. it's a minute long . if yall can reach out to her and help her in any way, i'd be less worried . I've also reached out to three other channels. i thought i'd reach out to yall 1 more time. thanks for just listening. Stay Groovy.

John

One ping only, please.

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

For future episodes beyond I will say that some personal favourite episodes of television overall are awaiting you in the coming seasons, Mr George. One in particular is melodiously special, and it will remain so for a for a very long time for this Aussie lad haha. Will stop right there 🤭 Also as usual gotta shout-out the stellar John De Lancie as Q… the dude’s a true legend of his craft and joyous to watch

Cinebinge

Hi Gary, yes we've reached out to her to see if theres anything we can do to help. Thanks for letting us know.

Stephen Morris

The Nth Degree, one of my favorites.

Raven Dark

There is an episode still to come that is a massive fan favorite, and I love it. Simone, I won't do it of course, but there is a quote from it that, if I used it. you'd know the episode immediately. When you said. "I'm thinking of one right now," you were likely referring to the same one. Just thinking of said quote still brings instant chills.

Brandon

What did I miss? Why do people get mad about something as simple as looking at the title of an episode? Back when TV guide was still a thing, seeing the title of an episode before watching it was perfectly normal. IMO the "protection" of spoilers goes way too far sometimes.

blerbaberpaterb

.....theres been complainers in past TNG episodes saying they shouldnt read episode titles because for some reason they think its a spoiler..... even though the title just appears minutes later.... and often before the actual reveal in the show itself..... people are just dumb and like to complain..... .....and thats just public comments....who knows what kind of crazy they got in DMs......

Brandon

Imagine going to a book store and buying a book without seeing the title or the cover art.

Matt O'Keefe

This episode made me think, what are Simone and George's opinions of. Peter Jackson's The Hobbit? Just wondering.

blerbaberpaterb

....Q is LITERALLY revealed AFTER the title showed up in this very video youre posting on.... they even said it in the video.... Qpid as a title shows up loooong before Q makes an appearance..... wtf are you even talking about...... .....had george known the title it wouldve made 0 difference..... what DID make a difference is complainers making things less fun for them...... with all these rules and cannot dos or says or thinks......

John Miller

When it comes to higher intelligence, it's not always that people care less about others or are more arrogant. What happens is that they sometimes don't realize that they're smarter. But if they do, they have to find a way to talk down to other peoples level. Both these things can come of as aloof or condescending. Because, as smart as they might be, they don't recognize what level they need to communicate in.

Brandon

Any Star Trek fan who got a TV Guide in the mail every week would have seen the title of the episode beforehand. Call me names all you want, but I think the way people try to protect reactors from things that aren't really spoilers is just too much. Is every single episode title in 'Friends' a spoiler because they are all titled "The One With..." and then mention something in the episode?

blerbaberpaterb

......exactly....nothing ruins fun more than a bunch of pointless rules..... dont read titles....dont feel this way.....dont hate that character.....like seriously...... we want to see their genuine reactions.....not their controlled thoughts cut down by complains.....

Brandon

IMO the absolute best Q episode doesn't even have a "Q pun" in the title. They'll never see it coming.

blerbaberpaterb

......nooooo brandon what have you dooonnnneeee.....youve spoiled it..... now they know theres more Q episodes in the future......./s

Danny Bryant

In regards to the Prime Directive, it is a non interference policy for Starfleet. It essentially boils down to "tough love" or "learn on your own". The idea is that if starfleet/federation fixed the problem then no lessons would be learned. eg Take away the weapons of a warring species and they will just beat each other to death with clubs or rocks. They need to learn the lessons that war teaches or go extinct.

Spacedone

The thing I really like about The Nth Degree is that it's clear that some writer decided to try and retcon that terrible William Shatner Star Trek V storyline with the evil big giant head at the centre of the galaxy.

REDR58

"Xur." "Xur!" "Xur?"

REDR58

I agree, particularly before doing movie versions of shows like "Starsky & Hutch," "The A-Team," etc.

Polecat21

My favorite iepisode s related to the quote "This one time at band camp"

Blackbaldrik

Post first episode discussion: I find it likely that this hyper-advanced civilization may have a sort of Prime Directive of their own, and they see helping with the Borg problem as interfering with the development of the Galaxy. They might actually view the Borg as a natural occurrence, rather than as an invasive plague. Like a destructive but necessary part of the normal Galactic ecosystem, akin to the way forest fires have been a part of nature's normal cycles on Earth.

G Lam

Data's Day (The one with the Dancing Doctor) is an example of an episode where nothing of real consequence actually happened.

Kat

Qpid is a silly little episode, but one thing I always liked is how Vash just broke the story and Q's elaborate staging by simply agreeing to marry the bad guy, because it's better than getting executed.

Raven Dark

Clearly I'm supposed to get this, but it's going over my head. I know the reference is from American Pie, but I'm not seeing the connection to a Star Trek episode. IF explaining means major spoilers, please don't. LOL

Thall

Oh come on, considering where Barkley came from, as basically a shut-in, going on stage at all is huge! That deserves props

TalynOne

It's common sense the Cytherians would be smart enough not to try to become the galaxy police or try to change the balance of power. The information they shared would likely not be weapons tech. Also just because The Borg is a big deal to us, doesn't mean it a big to deal to everyone. It's a big galaxy. There are a few cases with god beings interfering. The Organians from TOS for instance forcing a Federation/Klingon peace. They didn't pick side they saw the fighting as two children misbehaving.

GAB

Deep Space 9 started in 1993 before Next Generation ended in '94, but it's not essential to interleave the seasons for continuity. Voyager started in '95 and overlapped for five years with Deep Space 9, but again there is very little crossover - unlike much more recent CW shows, for example. One problem with DS9 and Voyager is that, unlike TNG, TOS and TAS, they have never been remastered in HD.

Monica Alarcon

Why would anyone get mad if they look at the name of the episode??? Did I miss something?

Data Cable

Well, other than hand-delivering a deep-cover Romulan spy back to her handler.

REDR58

DS9 and Voyager will probably never be officially remastered either, at least not any time soon.

REDR58

The Nth Degree Judgey Data is my favorite. Speaking of Cyrano de Bergerac, you guys should check out Peter Dinklage in "Cyrano" from 2021. Beverly just runs an acting class for people who are interested. The whole ship does not necessarily participate. It bothers me that no one ever pushes their chair back in to the conference table when they get up after a staff meeting.

Robert Gendron

"I wonder if they ever go where everyone has gone before and nothing goes wrong" You saw them do that, in "Family" they go to Earth and nothing goes wrong. It's all character interactions.

Scottie324

I always love the fact that the actor who plays Barclay also plays general Deathshead in Wolfenstein: The New Order

Thall

On the topic of intelligence an empathie I think the trope stems from humanity mostly. Unless we can meaningfully communicate, a lot of people tend to not be very empathetic. That goes from situations like in The Sopranos (where the roommate is grating and therefore dismissed) to real life where we overall don't care about an animals wellbeing, no matter how intelligent, if we wanna eat it (see pigs, or octopus and stuff like that). Might argue that's not tied to intelligence to make ourselves feel better, but we are vastly more intelligent than most animals and unless we conciously get taught to care (dogs, cats, pets in general) we don't care that much.

doe555

I was about to write the exact same thing. Wtf. I think that are voices/comments you should absolutely ignore George. Some people always find some nonsense to complain about. *eyeroll*

Monica Alarcon

I agree. It's like people complaining because George hates Janice from the Sopranos... It's his right to hate a character and he doesn't owe anyone anything... I don't always agree with their opinions but I absolutely respect them...

Thall

I would disagree that anything that was artificially created "doesn't belong" tbh. It evolved because another species made it, that makes it part of nature. It couldn't exist outside of nature, even if it needed help being brought into existence. If a super-intelligent AI supplants humanity, how is that not the next evolutionary step? If it's better than it's creators, more adaptable or simply better able to survive, that seems like evolution to me; after all, all species evolve to survive, while others don't evolve or evolve poorly and die out.

W_E_Ray (Dungeons-Dragons Grognard since '81)

Having been part of the dialogue previously, I'll weigh in: This was the (I think) last episode, "Qpid" where the title is the worst spoiler! "Q Who" and "Deja Q" are spoilers -- and this is the absolute worst because Q arrives so late in the episode. LOL, I was inwardly screaming at Simone to NOT reveal the title before the episode as she was like, 'well gollee-jeepers, we can say *this* title' -- I couldn't believe what I was hearing: This is one of the ONLY episodes where the title IS the Spoiler. As though, 'because' this title is a spoiler Simone was okay with it. Gotta laugh at that. .... Anyway, that's it (I'm pretty sure) for the titles that are unforgiveable Spoilers. So as for me, only one paying customer, I don't mind if George starts looking at titles again.

W_E_Ray (Dungeons-Dragons Grognard since '81)

I *LOVE* the episode "Qpid" -- I'm not a big SciFi fan so episodes that are less SciFi'ish are generally more appealing -- and this one has an almost D&D-like atmosphere with its Robin Hood silly plot. .... A few things: I *Hate* that they wrote the combat scene where the girls wield clay pots as weapons as the boys wield swords. Geordi LaForge, no way / no how, can wield a sword. No Way. No How. Meanwhile, Gates and Marina were the ONLY actors who had fencing-for-actors training!!!! I would have no problem if -- actually -- in MY head-canon -- Crusher uses a sword and Troi and Geordi use clay pots! Done! .... Number Two: I'm devastated you didn't catch the homage to 'The Princess Bride' -- it was one of the very first movies y'all did a Reaction to and got me as a YouTube subscriber. And I *know* you have each rewatched 'The Princess Bride' like, 26 more times since your Reaction 5(?) years ago. So when Picard says "I am not left handed" and changes to his right hand to defeat Inigo Montoya who is not from Nottingham, I was saddened you didn't catch on to that. .... Number D: The writers originally had written this as a King Arthur / Knights of the Round Table silly plot but the shit movie 'Prince of Thieves' with Morgan Freeman, Christian Slater and Alan Rickman (tragic they couldn't get a real actor with even a tiny modicum of talent)for the Robin character!) was to be the summer's big blockbuster so the writers changed it to a silly Robin Hood plot.

W_E_Ray (Dungeons-Dragons Grognard since '81)

Do not fret, George, Many, MANY more *individual* great episodes are coming. The great episodes y'all have seen so far -- on most people's "Top Favorite Lists" -- are 1) "Family" (Picard goes to France after the Borg -- the episode where Picard gets family therapy and then George, five minutes later in his Reaction channel, forgets that there is a whole episode where Picard gets therapy, and says the series doesn't do a good job of dealing with ptsd stuff during the episode "Identity Crisis"), and also 2) "Who Watches the Watchers" which is a great 'this-is-a-textbook-example-of-why/and/what-the-Prime-Directive-is' and also 3) "The Defector" where a Romulan defects and Picard saves the day by having allied with some Clingon cloaked-ships -- really we just love Picard and Data on the Holodeck performing 'Henry V'! -- and also 4) "The Wounded" where the guy from 'Shawshank Redempion' is a rogue Captain in Cardassian space, and also 5) "Yesterday's Enterprise" where Tasha Yar comes back to die a better death, and also 6) "The Offspring" where Data creates a daughter and Riker tries to pick her up at the bar in 10-Forward -- and that's not even counting "Measure of a Man" which, frankly, is only a *good* episode it just gets listed as a great because it's surrounded by Season 1 and Season 2 'Gene Roddenberry' episodes. But after you watch the whole series, if you go back to rewatch "Measure of a Man," it's only just pretty good -- a good episode. .... Anyway, that list of 'not-even-ten' episodes really only has two or three on most folks' 'Top Ten' list. There are probably Double that number of episodes still to come that will surpass most of those seven. But yeah, 178 episodes and 25-30 are GREAT. You've seen almost ten of them. EDIT: and 8) "Q Who" when we meet the Borg. Great episode.

Hombredave

If you guys are interested in Cyrano De Bergerac, then I highly recommend the movie 'Roxanne' (1987). It's a charming, whimsical film that's right up your alley.

Guts

Nth Degree is awesome but Qpid is one of the few episodes that I hate (aside from a few funny Worf scenes) :(

Guts

I don't know if anyone would get mad but I am in favor of not reading titles. Sometimes they give away too much and can spoil some of the fun in figuring out what's going on.

Guts

I think they are smart enough to recognize this.

Guts

Well I mean there is a marriage and we get to know that Maddox is continuing his work and Data is supporting it. Honestly, that's quite a lot of world-building for a TNG episode.

REDR58

Biologically speaking, there no such thing as bad or good evolution. Individuals do not evolve. There are no “steps” as that implies a plan or design. It is merely a process of change due to mutation or other changes that results in a difference in future generations.

REDR58

Q-pid I like this better than the Costner Robin Hood movie. *Much* better. It’s fine. A fun diversion.

DesolationEntertained

There are other contenders so it's not a spoiler, but for me "I am NOT a merry man!" is Worf's greatest line delivery.

Thall

Fair enough. It's bad terminology on my part. Still, anything that starts existing, even if it supplants something biological, belongs. Doesn't matter how it started existing. There is no "this doesn't belong" in the universe. Well except if there is stuff outside of it, but that's more philosophical, lol.

2026-09-05 05:00 Regarding Internal Consistency and the fact it just isn't a thing in an Episodic show: I was thinking about how it breaks George's verisimilitude thinking about how something in expisode X will almost never affect future episodes, such as the Cytherian's knowledge *after* the episode "The Nth Degree": I was thinking: would it help if you consider many episodes to exist not in the real universe of Star Trek but rather alternate realities or dimensions? Like, the episode "The Nth Degree" could just be a short fiction that the Barclay character writes during his off-duty time. Just a thought. I am aware that many Star Trek fans have to view many episodes from the show in the 1960s as 'not real' in the timeline or whatever. I know for me, at least, it's how I treat ALL of the Q episodes: I just can't allow my brain to allow for the existence of Q so in m y head canon, the Q episodes are maybe just fiction short stories that Dr. Crusher or Cpt Picard -- or maybe even the Creative-Writing-Club at Starfleet Academy -- writes as fun kind of episodes for their school play. (How the Borg first arrive is Classified Info, of course, so fiction writers make something up.) Anyway, food for thought. George -- this is an episodic show; every episode has to stand alone. Yes, the writers and directors and actors have finally gotten the characters fleshed out and there will now be occassional call-backs and some forward-thinking plotlines. But for the most part, well, Data NEVER had a BOMB in his forearm before the episode "Qpid" and he very likely will never AGAIN have a bomb in his forearm. Twenty episodes ago when Data is in "Ensigns of Command" and has to get people to evacuate the planet, he does NOT have that Bomb in his forearm. But the writers gave him one to cause a distraction in "Qpid" by throwing it on the fire. Maybe in twenty episodes from now Data will magically be written to have something else that makes the concept of having had that little thing in his forearm this episode make zero sense whatsoever. So. Um. Hey, the episode "Qpid" is a fiction Picard wrote on his off-duty time and never really happened, or, it happened in an alternate reality.

Seasons 3-5 are generally held up as the "good seasons" because of the overall quality level and the lack of real stinkers (which season 1 and 2 had a bunch of). But there are also plenty of standout classic episodes. In fact, you're about to watch one of my all time favorites, The Drumhead. If you want episode titles to look forward to, here's my personal list of the best to come: Darmok, I, Borg, The Inner Light, The Chain of Command, Lower Decks. and the series finale is a banger, as well.

REDR58

Simone, you asked about the director of this episode. It was directed by the late Cliff Bole who directed over 2 dozen episodes of TNG alone and of those this far you have seen: "Lonely Among Us" "Hide And Q" "Conspiracy" "The Royale" "The Emissary" "The Ensigns of Command" "The Hunted" "A Matter of Perspective" "Hollow Pursuits" "The Best of Both Worlds" "The Best of Both Worlds, Part II" "Remember Me" "First Contact" “Qpid” He also directed a number of episodes of DS9 and Voyager. George, you are correct about the reference to “Animal House”: “Ira Steven Behr wrote Worf's smashing of La Forge's mandolin, and subsequent non-sequitur apology, as an homage to National Lampoon's Animal House. (Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion, 2nd ed., p. 161)” As to what some of the cast thought: * * * * * Director Cliff Bole remarked, "It had everything that I liked as a director. It had Q, who's a very entertaining guy and character. What more would I love to do than Robin Hood: The Movie? Here I was able to do that. I stepped back in time, there was sword fighting, some boisterous 12th century characters and also the spaceship. What more can you get? That's the ultimate as a director. Some guys like to do the man in the gray flannel suit, and I like to do fantasy. It was a show where Picard falls out of character a little bit. He's not as stoic as he usually is and falls for a beautiful woman, who was raised to do that." (Captains' Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyages, p. 219) Patrick Stewart commented, "I think that episode probably gave us as a group more fun than any other. We got to dress up for one thing. And the whole Robin Hood myth and the way the familiar characters of Robin Hood were divided among the regular characters was very entertaining...It was light-hearted and romantic and sexy and we got to wear these fancy costumes." (Mission Overview: Year Four, TNG Season 4 DVD special features) Marina Sirtis remarked, "Any time a woman sees a man in tights, all bets are off. We just had such a blast. I loved some of the one-liners in that show from Michael [Dorn]. Just brilliant. The writing was really good on that show." (Mission Overview: Year Four, TNG Season 4 DVD special features) https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Qpid_(episode)

Tinfoilnation

George - yes, lots of gr8 episodes this season, but, there are even more coming in future seasons. There are at least ~20 more standout episodes, including one (no spoilers) that should have received Emmy awards for both acting and writing as it is not just an excellent STTNG episode, it's one of the best episodes on TV *ever*. It hits HARD. (It *did* win the Hugo award for that year, so it has that going for it :p )

REDR58

Oh, and Data Cable, you are correct about the “Prince of Thieves” connection. From Memory Alpha: According to Michael Piller, "While we were trying to break it, someone said let's throw these characters into one of the classic love stories." Ira Steven Behr had initially proposed setting this episode at Camelot. On Behr's suggestion, Piller changed it to Sherwood Forest to capitalize on the popularity of Robin Hood at the time, thanks to the release of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, in which Christian Slater performed. (Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion, 2nd ed., p. 161; Captains' Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyages, p. 219)

Gryff

Sean Connery was King Richard in the serious one, Prince of Thieves. Patrick Stewart was King Richard in Men in Tights

Gryff

Cliff Bole is legendary! I believe we have seen 2 Bolians on screen so far.

Jomero

Vash is probably the most like a stereotypical D&D rogue in Star Trek. Chaotic neutral, charismatic, quick witted, a dash of charming, definitely points in deception, etc. Also there are still strong episodes to be had, including at least several that many fans would consider their favorite (even above the ones you've seen thus far). TNG stays consistently good up until its last season. And even then the final season is still overall better than seasons 1 and 2. That said, there will still be some stinkers here and there. Such is the nature of a serialized show with multiple writers and directors.

Pokes

If I had to pick the Top 10 “I can’t wait for them to get to those episodes,” you guys have probably done 4 of them. Plenty of great episodes to go, but I obviously don’t want to hint at any timeframes. I’ll just say that TNG didn’t over stay its welcome. It’s pretty much just a good show from early-Season 3 all the way through the final season.

John Smith

There's also the 1950 movie version of the play itself. It stars Jose Ferrer and he's very good in the role.

Angela's invisible airfryer (corey)

FYI George, people getting mad at you looking at titles are wrong, silly, and should be ignored, lol. Look at titles if you want, bro.

Thomas Yanez

In case this is a fixable issue : I was watching this and then had work interrupt. I stopped the video, connected to my work VPN, spent a couple of hours banging around Azure/Exchange stuff, then when I was done, I disco'd the VPN and tried to go back to this video. It wouldn't play. I tried resetting the browser, reconnecting to your site, re-validating the Patreon connection, playing other videos, hard resetting browser, checking other sites (like YouTube, which worked fine) and going back to trying your videos (in both of your players) and nothing would play. I eventually had to completely unload all instances of Firefox before I could start playing videos on your site again. FYI.

Thomas Yanez

100% agree. Y'all trying to guess what the episode is about based on the title (and usually being hilariously wrong) is one of my favorite things.

Andrew

I always like the Lt. Barclay character. Rarely do we see flawed characters in Starfleet. Everyone is a max achiever who has fulfilled their potential and beyond. It's kind of refreshing to see a kind of well meaning f*ckup who has some flaws and shortcomings. We see his growth during the series and beyond. Also, great performance by Dwight Schultz in this episode.

Thomas Yanez

Definitely some great/favorite (for me, at least) episodes yet to come.

Paul McBryde

we used to read the newspaper or tv guide and it would have the full title and description like: "The Banana Incident Picard and Crew find a planet of sentient bananas, but all is not what it seems when Data wants to eat their President. Patrick Stewart stars." so i have no issue with title reading beforehand

Cinebinge

thanks for letting us know, will look into it.

REDR58

Excellent recommendation John Smith! Emperor Shaddam IV himself!

REDR58

Even simple things like Data’s cat (which was played by 6 different individuals over the series), Spot, which will change from an Abyssinian cat to a short-haired tabby and from male to female.

REDR58

I’m just being a pendant, sorry! But I take your point.

KnittingHaven

Oh, definitely episodes I'm looking forward to, though I think DS9 has my favorite episodes from this era of Star Trek, and there are some in Voyager that I really love. Are you going to continue in airing order, alternating between the shows when you get to when there was more than one show going on?

Angela's invisible airfryer (corey)

"Are there episodes down the road you can't wait for?" Yes, absolutely. More than a few. And next week is one of them. 7 of them are next season, including arguably the best episode of the series so "3 and 4 is the peak" is certainly not the case, lol. Can't wait is a understatement so we very much appreciate you guys doing the show.

KnittingHaven

Yes, I always feel like 3 and 4 things really pick up, but really, there are not a lot of favorites of mine in those seasons

Marcus Hicks

Man, I am getting such a wonderful amount of Star Trek content each week. You guys with TNG on Thursdays (my time) & Jen Murray with DS9 on the weekends! With the added bonus that both your channels allow me to watch without needing my own copies! (I have my own copies, but the Aussie versions never seem to synch up properly with the Streamed versions!)

Marcus Hicks

I can think of a couple more.....but won't say which because "spoilers".

Marcus Hicks

Love Nth Degree.....but QPid is usually an automatic skip for me. The love story with Marion is definitely not the first thing I think of when I think about Robin Hood. Camelot might have been a better setting for this one.....especially given Patrick Stewart's role in Excalibur 😉.

michael denny

I love it when Picard wears his nighty

G Lam

Damn.... Good point.

Alexander C Chalk

I am curious. When you get to season 6 of TNG will you watch the full season before starting DS9 or switch between them weekly? Seasons 6 and 7 of TNG run concurrently with seasons 1 and 2 of DS9.

Kyle B

I wonder if the X-Files may slot into this slot once Trek is done or for a break. 90s episodic sci-fi, like star trek, some episodes stronger than others, lots of amazing guest stars and directors too

DanTurismo

It's not the director. Cliff Bole did like 25 episodes of TNG, including some certified bangers. He did Best of Both Worlds.

James W.

To George's comment at the end of the upload about if the best of TNG is behind it since people highly praise season 3. Was that the peak? For me season 3 is where it starts to get more focused. I would say some of the best episodes of TNG are yet to come. No spoilers but I looked ahead at the eps left in this season alone and there are a bunch of all-timers for the franchise, let alone the series itself. I'd like to add the context that I am not even that big a fan of TNG and yet, I still feel that some of the best eps are to come.

James W.

Its so ill conceived. I do like that one line "What does GOD need with a Star Ship?!? " I didn't like how they just retconned in a long lost brother for Spock. It was dumb.

Bruce Woodcock

Looking ahead, there are no less than 36 episodes that I look at and thing, "Wow, I can't wait to see their reaction to that one!" And that's just in TNG. You guys have SO MUCH great shit ahead of you.

Ben Stevens

ayyy episode 420 blaze it up cinebitches

John

I recommend Phenomenon (1996) starring John Travolta, Forrest Whitaker, and Robert Duvall. It also has a great soundtrack

Ben Stevens

dude I would love it too, but its 11 seasons, or 218 episodes, and two movies. they'd really have to be desperate for more TV content, and even as much as I love bingeing the X-Files, it'd take them a couple years to get through it. it's an undertaking.

Angzarr

As soon as I saw what episode it was, I came to the comments to see if anyone had recommended Roxanne yet! I 100% agree with Hombredave.

PoindexterG

Qpid was in 1991, Men in Tights was 1993. You also missed Sir Guy's line, that he was the greatest swordsman in Nottingham. Which is what Picard's line "I'm not from Nottingham" was referencing.

John Smith

With regards to the Prime Directive - it's a much broader rule than just "leave pre-warp societies alone". It's a general rule that ALL societies have the right to develop in their own way, and therefore we (meaning the Federation) will not interfere in anything we weren't specifically invited to, and maybe not even then (there are rules as to what counts as "being invited"). Pre-warp societies are just a special case of a society not being ready to make its own decisions on certain matters.

Dioskur

Nth degree ranks very high in my top episodes list

Drew Acheson

There are quite a few AMAZING episodes left in this show, including this season's finale. For my money, the best episodes of the show beyond Measure of a Man and Best of Both Worlds are from seasons 5-7. I also LOVE the Barclay episode from this week. That actor has so much talent, he's believable as a bumbling, nervous wreck and as a self assured genius. His read in that second scene from Cirano De Bergerac is something I look up often because it's so good!

Chris Davies

You have only seen two of my top ten episodes, namely measure of a man and the defector; there is a ton of great star trek still to come in TNG

I know there are several episodes I am really looking forward to. One in particular which I'm sure Simone was referring to. Watching the Nth Degree I wonder if people applying to serve on the Enterprise have to say that they are willing to act in a play or play an instrument in a string quartet or a jazz trio to get the assignment. Gotta contribute to the cultural enrichment of the ship or go somewhere else. I miss it when you two would look at the episode title and speculate about the plot which Simone invariably does not remember.

I figured I knew which episode she was referring to (my favorite), and then she said she should get that __, and I said yep, that's the one (and I did actually get a __, because of that episode 😆).

Still have lots of favorite episodes to go. In the beginning of S5 there's an episode I know many of us have been waiting for George to get to. "His arms open" lol

AVATAR-X

I agree with The Last Starfighter.

Also, it would be impossible for someone with the PAL version on DVD to follow with their own copy as it gets sped up by about 4% in the conversion from NTSC. TNG cost Paramount something like $10 million to convert. I expect the bean counters have decided there's no profit in doing the same for DS9 and Voyager. I think that's a foolish decision, but it wasn't mine to make. AI up-conversion should be possible, but purists wouldn't like it, and quality control would still be necessary to correct AI-induced aberrations.

George, I think you overanalyzed the info-sharing part in the Nth Degree as 1. It's pretty obvious there are no aliens that are a threat to those beings, much less the Borg. Only the Q maybe. 2. If they see humanoids like zoo animals - which they kind of do - the proper documentarians almost NEVER interfere in how nature unfolds. They just analyze and record. There are many docs about recording predators doing horrible things. 3. What makes you think the Borg are an "unnatural" phenomenon? Is Cordyceps Fungus unnatural because it zombiefies its hosts? 4. Information sharing doesn't mean the aliens don't have some kind of directive to share everything they know - nor would we understand everything they share. They can obviously make any human super smart, and they choose not to. "Information exchange" doesn't mean they share everything, nor do they want to. Think of it like teaching a monkey sign language to learn to communicate. I think it's more about teaching each other about each other's species. 5. Bottom line, they're another Q species that sees all of us, including Borg, as primitive animals in the wild, and they enjoy analyzing. Despite mutual communication, we are still birds TO THEM. Sharing info based on our understanding doesn't mean we're on their level, nor do they see us on their level.

True, but that is not that many more episodes than TNG alone, not to mention the other trek series that may get reactions and the numerous movies. X Files is small by comparison to Trek.

hi Thomas, could you tell me which VPN and extensions you were using? thank you.

Thomas Yanez

Tried both Firefox and Chrome, no extensions (disabled ad-blocking for your site the last time I reported an issue). VPN = Fortinet VPN v7.4.3.1790.

There are great episodes coming, but as the usally star trek, so so episodes as well.

John

I can't wait for next week!

There is a fan theory that there have actually been six Spots within the show's continuity, because Data does such a terrible job caring for them. 😬

Angzarr

Yes, I much prefer a different "Sci-Fi" series' Big Giant Head.

I remember watching this episode for the first time, and being annoyed that it seemed like it was just going to be a rehash of the TOS episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before". I'm glad it went in a different direction. 1:02:38 I was desperately trying to stop my brain from writing a Borg-themed parody of "Cotton-Eyed Joe", and for once I succeeded.

I keep forgetting to comment, but are there any Friends of Desoto among this group?

Angela D. Mitchell

I also recommend the Peter Dinklage musical film "Cyrano," which is an underrated gem and just gorgeous.

Perhaps it's a good idea to do a poll and settle once and for all on what the proper way to approach episode titles should be? Coz it seems there are a fair few of us that finds it silly. If there are more people who thinks episode titles are embargo then so be it, but it may be a case where some of us missed the original event where people voiced their opinion (which they are entitled to and should speak up if that is indeed what they think) on not reading the episode title and equate it to spoilers, so you may have a silent majority of people who don't agree but not offered their opinion originally. (Or maybe there is no silent majority, hence a poll to find out either way?)

If they did that, then the Lower Decks wouldn't have a reason to go to the bridge except for when someone spills.

There are alot of good episodes still to come. Have George and Simone said are they going to start DS9 after season 5 since that is when started airing?

I really love Barclay episodes (almost as much as I loathe Luoxanna Troi episodes - just my tastes). Dwight Schultz is mad talented and Reg Barclay is a delightfully fun character.

I think "Enterprise" may have hinted at the eventual creation of the Borg.

I love the robin hood time with the crew. Q just wants to play with folk on the holodeck. Only his holodeck is real and there are no safety protocols.
