Was the opening episode music meant to be edited out? Not the title song or end credit song, I understand those. The music that started this episode. But music in episode is so important for this show, I'll be switching to my own copy for the first time in awhile. And not a big deal at all, thanks for giving us the options.

R. Chang

For reasons of audio balancing, I do generally appreciate that you guys mute intro music. Like in TNG I couldn't hear you guys at all over theme song. But I have to say that for this show, I often end up cuing up Tank in a separate window just to listen to it because it's such a banger.

Cinebinge

yeah, segments that are nothing but original music are very copyright risky, so out of self preservation we chose to mute them when we can.

Tangerra

Nice guess Simone!

Zen Reacts

It does NOT end in a movie the movie takes place between 2 of the later episodes

Jacob

Completely understandable, thanks

Allan

I don't know if anyone else has said this yet, but you really should watch the next episode preview at the end of Episode 11, "Toys in the Attic." Actually a lot of the previews are worth checking out since they have unique monologues or these fun little dialogue interactions with the characters. I understand wanting to avoid spoilers though. There is a compilation of all of them on youtube that you could watch when you finish the show as a nice way to recap and hear all the extra bits, but I really recommend watching the one at the end of Episode 11 when you get to that episode.

SANAMDEEP

nah this show doesnt end in a movie, that said movie takes place within 2 episodes of this show

Zen Reacts

the Faye episodes are gonna ruin you

erosennin

I do that for the sopranos reactions sometimes. I have the theme song in a separate youtube video^^

The Real Andrew Kim

Im pretty sure the original iPod commercials with people in silhouette dancing was inspired by this intro and specifically the parts simone likes.

michael denny

Prairie oysters where I'm from are specifically chopped deep fried calf testicles. I've never tried them.

michael denny

also, could we do 4 parts next week, so we don't split Jupiter jazz I hate that.

Matthew Richson

I thought those were Rocky Mountain Oysters?

The Real Andrew Kim

For Heavy Metal Queen, the trucker culture is heavily based on real life japanese trucker culture with trucks called DEKOTORA short for decorated truck which usually have bright colored neon/led lights and japanese style murals on the sides and back. If you have never seen one i recommend googling dekotora and you will instantly see the inspiration. There is a bit of mix with US trucker culture as well.

The show itself has an ending. The creators have always said that the movie takes place between episodes 22 and 23, despite being produced after the series ended. The original DVDs had 6 volumes and volume 5 ended with episode 22. So I've always watched the first 5 volumes, then the movie, then volume 6. Some people already disagreed with me 2 weeks ago, but it's my preferred way to watch the series. I personally think it's better, but whatever way you guys decide to do it will be fine. I don't know who did the vocals for the song in Heavy Metal Queen, but they definitely found someone that can do a good Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden.

Ross E Bailey

Just came here to say exactly that! If there’s one they need to watch, it’s that one!

Tangerra

I think it’s important to think of this show less as a “plot” and more of an exploration of themes, which is why it also explores genres, both musical and storytelling. Many anime’s of the time had overarching plots, so it’s more artist intention than a product of its time. But then, this also was a show they made to sell model spaceships that just ended up in the hands of artists, so could be a little column A, little column B.

Tangerra

For me, I always felt like the movie hits different when you already know how the story ends, rather than it feeling like just a long episode. But I can always see the value in watching it that way. I think it’s important to depends on what elements you enjoy the most about the show.

Tangerra

"Once upon a time, in New York City in 1941... at this club open to all comers to play, night after night, at a club named "Minston's Play House" in Harlem, they play jazz sessions competing with each other. Young jazz men with a new sense are gathering. At last they created a new genre itself. They are sick and tired of the conventional fixed style jazz. They're eager to play jazz more freely as they wish then... in 2071 in the universe... The bounty hunters, who are gathering in the spaceship "BEBOP", will play freely without fear of risky things. They must create new dreams and films by breaking traditional styles. The work, which becomes a new genre itself, will be called... COWBOY BEBOP”

LeperMessiah117

Yes, it is set between episodes 22 and 23.

michael denny

Premise of the show is coming to terms with your past, and affording toast along the way.

michael denny

That too, they have many names but prairie oysters in Montana and Canada

Brandon

I know what you mean. I first saw the series before the movie was announced. It's been 25 years, so I don't exactly have fresh eyes with this series anymore. 😅

Raymond Torres

digimon digital monsters digimon are the champions!

GAB

The theatrical movie is set between episodes 22 and 23, but it's a standalone that can just as well be watched at the end of the series.

Jobbe Smit

While it's essentially a flashback it plays much better at the end as it references dialog from the last episode.

Leon Allen

This show is the G.O.A.T. for a reason. On the surface its a show about nonsense but It has such a rich character based story that has made me laugh and cry.

Episode 2:: Wanted for Jokes against Humanity: George - 500 Woolong Reward

The Real Andrew Kim

Currently watching you guys react to this at one of North Americas biggest anime convention Fanime in California! 😉👍

Charlie Ito

This show is so fun. Thanks for watching it. Although now I have Digimon stuck in my head... EDIT: Ah, finally! I have had Cats on Mars stuck in my head since I first heard it but I didn't recall where it came from. (Cats on Mars · Seatbelts · Yoko Kanno, 1998)

Victoria Terpsichore — I thought George would react to that, given his love of Greek mythology. > In Greek mythology, Terpsichore (/tərpˈsɪkəriː/; Ancient Greek: Τερψιχόρη , "delight in dancing") is one of the nine Muses and goddess of dance and chorus. She lends her name to the word "terpsichorean", which means "of or relating to dance". When I learned this, years ago, I immediately checked the internet for someone with half-Greek/half-Korean ancestry, who was also a professional dancer, and who had the online screen name, Terpsikorean, but, alas, zero results.

gfixler

I've done that for the themes of Chainsaw Man, Frieren, and Demon Slayer 😄

REDR58

I'd recommend they at least watch the preview/next time segments after they finish the series.

REDR58

One of the trucker ships even seems to have neon decorative lighting.

REDR58

Speaking of those model spaceships they are rather expensive these days, around $100 US for even just the 1/72 scale Bandai kits, which were released in 2000. There are larger, factory-assembled models at that are even more expensive.

REDR58

George thought that VT looked like a man despite the feminine voice, but I think it's just the way the artists decided to draw a somewhat "bulky" or husky female who is apparently about 45 years old. Also in the old photo of herself and her husband, she appears more petite and typically female. The Cowboy Bebop Wiki states that “VT's Russian name and blonde hairstyle gives the impression she is an aged homage to Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman to fly in space.”

Anders Thomsen

In my head cannon, Spike, Jet and Faye are doping smaller bounties in between episodes. Not enough to strike it rich, but just enough to keep going

REDR58

The Cowboy Bebop episodes are called "sessions" (for a reason!) Session 8 Waltz for Venus George, there is a surface of Venus as it is a rocky planet, 1 of the 4 rocky planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars) in our solar system. The Russian "Venera 9" probe launched by the Soviet Union successfully landed on the surface of Venus and took the first photograph from the surface of a planet other than Earth: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venera_9 In this episode "terraforming" is mentioned. After Faye and Spike break up the hijack and you can see the hijackers being taken off the ship by police. Session 9 Jamming with Edward Yuuri Kellerman's name is a parody of the "psychic" Uri Gellar: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uri_Geller Kellerman's voice is reminiscent of Hungarian-American film actor Peter Lorre, of "Casablanca" and many other films: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGv9fS91fUk Speaking of Pippi Longstocking, that character was the inspiration/reimagination for Lisbeth Salander from "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" books. Salander was born with red hair, like Longstocking (though she later kept it dyed black) and in the books and original Swedish movies, she uses the alias "V. Kulla" which is an abbreviation of "Villa Villekulla," the name of Pippi Longstocking's house in the books by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren.

Anders Thomsen

If you haven't seen/heard it, Platina Jazz made a cover of The Real Folk Blues (end credits song) in Spanish. It is really good

REDR58

How else are they supposed to stay with bell peppers and beef?!

Unreal Gaz

My mental excuse for Spikes floating act is that there was still leftover atmosphere in the mining satellite, but not enough to breath.

Peter Hudson

Would be a good idea to do the next 4 episodes at once, you'll want to watch Jupiter Jazz Part 1 & 2 in one sitting Also, since watching episode 5, have you actually watched the end credits? There were always a lot of clues into Spike's history there

Peter Hudson

Also, I think Bruce's fighting style was Jeet Kun Do, which is also Spike's

The Real Andrew Kim

Yup, but I had already mentioned that in the comments of their first Cowboy Bebop post 😁

Prospero Finch

There is a through-line for the show, a sort of returning plot, but the show is an exploration of themes via many self-contained stories. It’s jazz. They’re riffing on genre. Each episode is its own improvisation. Each episode tells you more about the world and the characters based on how they move through it. You’ll get little nuggets of backstory, but that’s not the focus.

gfixler

She didn't just look masculine, she looked a lot like a relative of mine, a man who's a bit of a hunky surfer dude, and was often called Fabio, by the rest of the family 😆

Jpsynergy

Is it just at the beginning when it bleeds from the intro? I just noticed it and came here. If it's throughout it's definitely a must to watch with your own copy.

André Carvalho

George asking “where is this going?” is actually a really good question to keep in mind with Cowboy Bebop. Because the show can feel like it’s “just” about bounty hunting, surviving, and drifting from one job to the next — and in a way, that feeling is part of the experience. I’d say you’re both circling something important already: maybe the real question isn’t only “where is the plot going?”, but “what is the Bebop to each person on that ship?” Keep that question in the back of your mind.

Tangerra

Dead serious question for everyone. What the fuck color is Spike’s ship? The Swordfish models all come in red, but on the show it’s pink right? Like maybe a more of magenta rather than carnation, but pink right? I ask because I have serious issues seeing shades of red.

Gilthwixt

It's a pretty unique color. Somewhere between Salmon Pink/Orange and Scarlet depending on the lighting. Googling different shades in this range, Cranberry Red seems to be pretty close. Hex code is #bb4a50
