Top of my short list. Other movies on there are Us (2019) and The Invisible Man (2020)

Śéáń

One of my all time favourites. Doesn't quite stick the landing in the end, imo, but the rest of the film more than makes up for it.

Jeff K.

The John Carpenter is strong with this one... Also I cannot believe this movie is already 12 years old. I swear, it feels like it came out like, within the last five years. Time she do be movin'!

sb

George's personality is hyper sarcastic analytical trait manifestation syndrome.

Sean Maher

A young Reece Witherspoon and young Ben Wong

Jeff I.

One of the little details I just noticed on this rewatch is that the first girl in the intro is wearing heels with pajamas because she was panicking and grabbed whatever shoes were closest. Like she'd worn them out the night before, so they were already next to her bed.

Crow

My initial gut reaction to the "who would play Simone" question was Anna Kendrick just based on vibes. Fun and a bit goofy. :) George? ummm......someone pretentious and snobbish... (kidding, love you bro) Don't know why Paul Rudd is popping in my head. He's funny and I aslo feel like he's pretty intelligent also (Rudd I'm talking about). Didn't spend a ton of time thinking about it, so I'm sure there are much better options. This was just my gut reaction to each. :)

Jpsynergy

Everyone practice safe sex you never know when you might contract a supernatural force that will follow you to the ends of the earth!

pinkdino99

George - this is a metaphor for impending death, disease and degradation (set in the ruins of Detroit !) Yes logically you could move to Australia.. but somewhere in the back of your mind you would know that it is still coming for you. Same with if you pass it on. You could never be certain.

Matt O'Keefe

I always imagined as a kid something walking slowly towards me from a distanceme to kill me. It was kind of fun.

MeetMountain

Jason Siegel would be mine actor to play me.

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Great premise and a really well crafted creepy flick that definitely got under this dude's skin more than a lot of other films in the genre at the time.... Oh and as an Aussie I can say that even if you move here to escape a slow-walking shapeshifter, there's a decent chance of getting bit by some other deadly insect/creature if you find yourself in the wrong spot at the wrong time. Upside is we have a great time down here until then haha

Jpsynergy

I'd like to add Unsane to The Invisible Man for movies about stalkers that will give you nightmares.

Thomas Yanez

Rudd would definitely be able to pull off the "confidently wrong" thing George whips out every now and then.

Emptysea93

Despite common misconceptions this movie is not about STDs, the director has explicitly stated it’s about loss of innocence. Particularly how, after our first major trauma, we suddenly truly understand we will die. ‘It’ is our inevitable doom, death, disease, and decay. All that ruins us, we suddenly become aware of it after a trauma. And even if we pass the worry along, or push it away, it will still come for us eventually. No one will ever be free, and no one can escape. I do not believe going across the ocean will help. Though the creature is slow it still clearly travels what should be days of travel on foot seemingly overnight when they go to the beach house. So I believe it has some level of teleportation ability, it just chooses to bide its time.

Thomas Yanez

While I'm curious to hear who Simone/George would pick to best represent their personality, they'd really be picking the person they THINK represents how they THINK they present to outsiders. Much better to let others pick for you.

Cromulentius

Well, it does seem like the film at least implies that said supernatural force only keys off of vaginal sex, so...

Jeff K.

By the way, George and Simone: they're currently working on a sequel called They Follow, with filming supposedly beginning this summer.

Jeff K.

That's funny, that's mine too. We don't look particularly alike, but I always find myself connecting with the characters he plays pretty strongly - largely in the things he's written - so I feel like his personality and sensibilities probably align with mine more than any other actor.

Cromulentius

I think Zoey Deschanel would be the obvious choice for who should play Simone as she tends to play characters who have a positive energy, but can also be very, very anxious. For George, and I swear this isn't just a race thing, I'd lean towards John Cho because he can be very goofy and funny, but also has no problem playing characters who are thoughtful and, dare I say it, at times just a smidge pedantic. On the subject of It Follows, I think Maika Monroe is by far one of the most underrated actors working today. If you want an idea of her range, after It Follows, please please watch Longlegs.

Gizmo_Mogwai_

This was so good. Always a treat watching a movie I haven't seen before with your commentary

MeetMountain

I haven’t seen every movie he’s in, but the main stuff he’s know for he plays a similar person. I’m like that. Plus I’m also a big tall white guy and we look similar but not like, “oh man you know who you look like?”

Thomas Yanez

In case it is something you want to fix, by the middle of the movie (I didn't notice if it was happening earlier), for example, when the kids are hanging out at the beach house and It shows up, your reaction is running a full second or two behind the action in the embedded image (of the no-sync-required version).

Jeffrey Mitchell

Do we know how far away the beach was or how long they were there.

Monica Alarcon

I came here to say the same. It was fine until then but now it's totally out of synch. At least in the "sync with your copy" version

Monica Alarcon

Dang it. It happens in the no sync required version too...

Jeff K.

Yeah, I'm not as tall as he is (I'm 6-2, he's 6-4, for those scoring at home), but he and I are about the same age and general build. Plus, hey, he and I both grew up playing basketball so that's gotta count for something, right!? (Although I just remembered he was high school teammates with Jason Collins, the first openly gay NBA player who just died at a very young age, so now I'm sad...)

Ian Tellam

I just checked, and to walk all around the earth at a pace of 5km/h - if you could move continuously and you didn't need to sleep or eat or rest - would take just over a year. even taking topography into account. So if you went to another continent it would buy you, at most, a few months, even if 'it' didn't use any transportation. You'd have to keep moving. You'd also have to factor in how you're going to support yourself while continuously being on the run in this manner for your entire life. It might be better just to keep sleeping with people.

Kyle B

There is a lot of interesting choices in this movie, things that you accept in passing but dont make sense, intentionally so. Just try to pin point a year that this takes place, or even season. Also concerning the monster, when it was attacking at the pool and she didnt want to say what it appeared as, it is revealing in the photo later that it was her father.

Emptysea93

They have to drive overnight and reach the beach by morning, so it’s several hours away by car at least. Which should buy them at least a day or two depending on how much it is hindered by the terrain. And while there is no indication of how much time has passed, if any has at all, it still appears to be the same day, since they are also mostly in the same clothes plus swimwear. This means at the very least It was able to cross that entire distance only a few hours longer than it took them by car. To me that implies it has at least some ability to either speed up or teleport.

Maria Forsström

The full reaction where you don't need a copy gets a few seconds out of sync after a while.

Monica Alarcon

Wait, what if that engineer guy is the Danny DeVito of the set and his twin is even taller?

your local cryptid

i've always liked how the friend group in this movie works. i honestly can't think of another horror film where no one really antagonizes anyone else. when Jay wants to leave, everyone just goes 'ok' and rolls with it. they're all just supportive, and even the guy who doesn't really believe her still just wants her to feel safe. it all feels very natural and non-tropey

JayDee

Fan casting Simone : Olivia. Cooke George : Thomas Mann (but he’s not Asian so there is a controversy)

Eversharpe

Or, how about actors who can act. Are you trying to tell me Daniel Day Lewis couldn't portray Simone? And Jack Black as George, mow that's the buddy movie we didn't know we needed. Also Robert Downey Jr. as all the cats.

Opti_Frog

This movie is beautiful in its simplicity. They manage to do so much with so little. I never want to see a sequel where they unravel the "lore" or take away from the mystery. Also, the soundtrack is phenomenal.

OddThomas

+1 for Invisible Man (2022)

Jasbro

I had to go check because i didnt believe you, omfg how has it been over a decade.

OddThomas

My one note is it needed more scares but otherwise I love this film. The soundtrack is iconic and Maika Monroe is great in everything (apart from Independence Day 2 but not really her fault). The Guest and Longlegs would be my next picks.

Jay

It has no teleportation. It takes direct routes only. It doesn't follow your path. it goes in a straight line. So changing directions a lot COULD by you a small bit of time as it readjusts its pathing but that's it. minutes at most.

Jeff K.

Right? Like, I swear it feels like yesterday that people were like "Holy cow this new John Carpenter-inspired horror film is the best in the genre in decades!" and then I had to triple check this morning that it actually WAS released in 2014, because holy shit. My son was 3 when I first saw this, and how he's about to be a sophomore in high school. What the actual fuck.

Jay

So George is that D&D player that always tries to break the DM's game. 5 minutes in and he is trying to break the concept of the film. That's ok because theorizing a plan is the fun of this movie and your plan breaks down the further in to the movie you get. First thing I want to say is you two both seem to be confused by the "rules" No you can't just pass it back and forth between 2 people. It's a succession line. Even though the writer says it's not about STD's it is metaphorically a virus. One that there is no cure for. once you have IT you have it. But you can protect yourself by infecting another. Once that person is dead...you have to infect another. You can't just build a wall of one night stands. George as far as your move to Australia idea. That buys you about 5 months. It will travel in a straight line always the most direct route so don't picture a flat map of the earth. it will take the shortest direct route from Montreal to Australia as the crow flies. It moves at roughly 2.7 mph (im american im not doing a conversion) It gives you roughly 153 days in Australia. So you would go back to a normal life and routine until one day you notice a person deliberately waking straight at you and it starts all over again. We say with the pool scene that the ocean isn't really going to hinder it much. but it is inevitable it will eventually find you. Now you could do the math to see where it would be in the world at a certain time and then fly Back to Montreal. But you would want to wait until it was close to the shore before leaving Australia to maximize your time otherwise it will instantly turn around from wherever it currently is. So you could essentially live "peacefully" 5 months at a time. But you would always have to have a plan to leave again. That kind of travel isn't very practical though for the average person. So in another nod to death and the real world. The richer you are the better chance you have at a long life. If you are poor you are not flying across the world every 6 months.

Royal83

For Simone it’s Alison Brie/ Zoey Deschanel/ Florence Pugh and for George it’s Elijah wood/Patton Oswald! 🤣

Stephen Morris

i think George looks more like Audio Book Voice Actor Jeff Hays. but that just might be my dumb white eyes.

Kieran Hawk

A younger Benedict Wong for George, he'd even look the part so it's perfect. Dakota Fanning for Simone. I think she could pull off the neurotic, scared of everything, scatterbrain.

doe555

yeah there is a cut at 1:01:29, i guess because simone was struggeling with her headphones. After that its out of sync.

TexasNight

Well that was a big "meh" from me... it was well made and the music did a lot of heavy lifting setting a eerie tone... but... IMO it was just dumb...

Alexander Whitehill

I think either Amy Adams or Isla Fisher could play Simone. Either one could play Simone's brand of bubbly but plagued by anxiety. For George I really think Benedict Wong would be a good choice. The man is a phenomenal actor and could really pull of George's.... dry cynicism.

Jonathan Eaton

Simone played by Rachel McAdams, George as Himself

Sobran

Part of the problem with the "fly to Australia" idea is that we don't totally understand the rules and that complacency is a real problem. An average person walks 3mph. Let's say this thing only walks 2mph. Presumably it doesn't need to sleep or rest, so at 2mph it travels nearly 50 miles per day. How does it interact with water? We see it swim but does it HAVE to swim? Or breathe? Can it just walk along the bottom of the ocean? It's 7500 miles from California (no idea where this takes place, so just naming somewhere in NA) to Sydney, Australia. Depending on what the answers are to the above questions it might make it to Sydney in 4 months or it might take 8 months. That's a HUGE variance. To play it safe, do you fly somewhere new every 4 months? That's easier said than done. You have to move to a new country, hope you don't run afoul of any immigration issues, find a job, then do the same thing again in a few months. It's exhausting and it's expensive, so what if you cut it close? With the time to get there so long, you won't know when it's showing up. What if you're off by a week? Or a month? What it if shows up a little early and you're asleep? Part of what is terrifying about this is that unless you have unlimited wealth or people to guard you when you're asleep, you ALWAYS have to be afraid. You can never really relax. Maybe that first two weeks in Sydney, before the paranoia starts setting in again.

OddThomas

Simone: Lisa Kudrow George: Nick Offerman

bullettbot

Also I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure its her dead father at the end throwing all the stuff in the pool. That's why she doesn't want to tell her sister who she is seing.

Jamie

It's mortality, innit

David Szoke

I did some number crunching, the fastest it will get to Australia is 75 days if lucky from Canada (yes I'm using the scaredy cat as bait). If it is a true shape shifter maybe it can turn into a fish?

Sobran

See and that's the thing. Your number seems just as plausible as mine. And that uncertainty would almost certainly get me killed. What if I figure my number is right and I'm going to leave in 3 months, giving myself what I think is at least a month of extra time to be safe? And then 2.5 months in it kills me in my sleep.

Robinson vs. Parkinson's

Maika Monroe also stars in Longlegs, which I really want you guys to react to. Totally underrated horror film that let's Nicolas Cage off the chain.

Beginning_of_a_new_era

To be honest just join swinger clubs, orgys and whatever you shouldn't see the thing never the rest of your life easy to be the Thing 😂

Sckmnky

George - Benedict Wong; because I think he can pull off the talkative, know-it-all nerd, with endless dad jokes thing. Simone- anna kendrick or dakota fanning; definitely need the sensitive, anxious, and sweet vibe

Alexander Brown

The survivability of It is precisely what makes it a frightening monster to me. Yes, if you know the rules you can avoid it. But it never stops following you, so you need to always be avoiding it, constantly, for the rest of your life, on the move, always aware of where it is. If you give it to someone else you remove the immediate danger, but you also remove what little control you had because it's harder to track if it's not following you, and if it gets the other person without you knowing, it's following you again and could come at any time, from anywhere. You're definitely going to live longer than if you're stalked by most other monsters, but I'm not sure it would be a life worth living.

Cromulentius

I love the creepy imagery of It trudging across the bottom of the ocean, so that's my head-canon.

Cromulentius

By "dumb," are we talking about the characters? Plot? All of the above?

Cromulentius

Seems like one would be better off just going barefoot. But I've never worn heels, so...

Ken

I am not sure why George said there was a limited amount of Asian actors if we aren't supposed to go based on looks when casting George's roll, because if we are supposed to go on vibe/personality alone, I would say a perfect casting for George would be Kristen Stewart, she's got range. For Simone, I think I would go with Rose Byrne.

funky weapon

I think the ending is supposed to give you a sense of paranoia, always on edge in case it comes back, but I don't think the dude walking behind them is meant to be the monster. Working girls gonna work. Ending feels really abrupt though. Like they ran out of story or ideas. And I don't think they put nearly as much thought into the concept as George did. This movie reminds me of that horror film about the monster who can only get closer with the lights off. Great concept but meh execution. The score is probably the most memorable thing about this movie.

funky weapon

I second the guest. What a wild and fun movie that is.

Honky Tonk Badong Badong

George should be played by Gary Oldman. Because of course Gary Oldman could do it.

BellaBlue

Casting: Simone : Ashley Padilla George: Danny McBride

Russell Richardson

Sometimes I worry they get so bogged down by trying to figure out rules that they might be missing the movie🤣

BellaBlue

I died a little inside when they said...the guy from Halloween...Jason...

BellaBlue

yes..I love Longlegs as well...and a Maika Monroe fan in general... Longlegs had enough buzz where I was always surprised they didn't react to that one quickly

BellaBlue

that would take some actual analysis

BellaBlue

I love Maika Monroe and she is such a baby face here...ha.. I remember loving this when I saw it at the theater on release and I still think it is such a well done film...holds up

BellaBlue

They Follow begins filming this Summer...so maybe a late 2027 or def a 2028 release at latest..Same Director and Maika Monroe is back...so def looking forward to that

BellaBlue

This is a suggestion not for me but for others...because I often see comments on the board of peeps who say they often watch films they have never seen for the first time as a watch along w ur reactions... I pretty much see everything at the theater on release so doesn't impact me much..but for those peeps..I think it would be good to not assume peeps have seen the film if watching ur reaction..and also that means giving spoiler about films you've watched but haven't posted yet...just my opinion..but seems best to err on the side of caution..

Robinson vs. Parkinson's

After my first watch of LONGLEGS, I immediately rewatched it to try and see how many times I could find the devil in the background. Yes, I played "Where's Satan?" instead of Waldo.

Jay

I love that George likes to know alot about lore and rules. But there are times where he is spending SO much time analyzing something he doesn't understand that he talks over the answer.

Mike Milligan

Monster is an existential dread given physical form - George: "I have figured out the rules so I beat you" intro to second movie is George in heels on an Australian beach lol

TYLER NORWOOD

Amy Smart and Bobby Lee for personality matching actors for Simone and George.

JoeNotCharles

The end reveals a problem with the plan of getting someone else who can see it to watch your back: you can't ask each other, "Do you see that person?" You need to have someone who CAN'T see it to check against.

Ashton Lewis

Simone: A young Lisa Kudrow George: Gary Busey / Randy Quaid

RSteele

George stop talking for a minute and watch the movie

Jacob King

I’d cast Owen Wilson as Simone and Ben Stiller as George

maikeru

I like Offerman in The Last of Us

zona999

Really loved that about this film, too. They were concerned for her and believed her --they were real friends.

zona999

This film gets huge points for originality. And being a different kind of horror. Yes, the monster is slow, but it's also relentless. You never get to completely relax as you know it will keep coming back. And I think the 'It' can follow to other continents without flying, George. It's curse-like so if you go to Australia, it would just appear there, too, just like it does at home.

Jacob King

Totally wrong about this being survivable btw it is inevitable oncoming death. There’s no surviving, you can only delay.

Florian

I'm going with Jennifer Lawrence for Simone and Chris Pratt for George. But I totally see Owen Wilson for Simone 🤣🤣🤣

Carson

If y’all wanna see more of Maika Monroe and the incredible talent she possesses, I highly recommend two more recent movies she’s starred in: Watcher (2022) and Longlegs (2024)

Kieran Wilton

You guys are really doing your enjoyment of the films suspense and atmosphere a disservice by treating the film and its rules like a math problem that needs to be solved

Cinebinge

Hi Kieran. we understand how it may feel that way to some but please do understand, to us, theorizing IS the fun. to us the two things are not mutually exclusive, that is just how we enjoy things. it may not be for everyones taste, but it is who we are.

Cinebinge

always get those 2 confused :/ sorry!

Cinebinge

it unfortunately is how i enjoy things, sometimes to my detriment i agree, but even on my own free time playing video games, my biggest enjoyment comes from dissecting the system and try my best to break it. 🤷‍♂️

Kieran Wilton

Totally get that. I didn't mean it in a rude way or anything I just felt like you missed out on some of the more suspenseful moments trying to figure out the rules but I definitely get how that can be part of the fun and if that's how you get the most enjoyment out of it I completely respect that 🙏

Jay

Oh never stop analyzing and being curious. It's one of those unfortunate things about react videos. You cant really pause to discuss. Well you could but its probably an editing nightmare. It's a circumstance of if i was showing you a movie in person (which is what react videos simulate) i would just politely interrupt you and say "wait. You might be getting your answer in this dialog".

Violet Linnington

The It Follows monster will pull your haaaair Up, but not oooout

Twiska Brand

I saw this when it first came out. Interesting concept, but I didn't like the execution. I think it was all good till the pool scene, then all logic goes out the window in favour of cool visuals, in my opinion, filler. If the film was going to end with Paul taking the curse and passing it on, they should have had that moment when he first suggested it. If they had done that, then instead of the pool plan, they could have further explored the concept of trying to pass it on. If they were going to have a action filled finale they should have done someone that makes sense to rules if the concept. We, the audience already knew it couldn't be killed, so rather than trying and failing to kill it I feel like it would have been more interesting to see them attempt to trap it.

Matthew Mosley

Bang ONE popular working Porn star and BANG ... it's too busy to ever find you (and hear if they start dying)

Matthew Mosley

other horrors to watch DARKNESS FALLS and GREMLINS (pref at Christmas time)

Honky Tonk Badong Badong

One word: "The Horribly Slow Murderer With The Terribly Inefficient Weapon." Okay, that's more than one word, but still.

Nathan Jasper

I wasn't a big fan of this film, but on a lighter note, I do think the tagline should have been "F*** around and Find Out" 😆 I mean that kind of sums it up right?

DJS302

Kinda sounds like the crescendo build up of crashing cymbals used in The Joker [Hildur Guðnadóttir], moments just before The Joker shoots Robert De Niro "You get what you F****** deserve!". The bass thumping in the background and the slow build up of cymbals crashing.

Max Krause

I think I'd go to a high class brothel with many international patrons. Seeing how they travel all over the world and are partial to employing sex workers, that seems to give me the biggst chance of buying the most time. But knowing my luck, the next customer would be a guy from my home town.

BellaBlue

This is my biggest critique of the channel in general..and before anyone gets mad at me... easily my fav reactors...I love their banter..and I love they are intelligence and fun personalties....BUT...to your point...sometimes the but what ifs and trying to figure things out do get in the way of just enjoying the film (and in case of reaction enjoying it along w us)... A murder mystery....trying to figure out clues is part of the ride...a movie like this...trying to figure out how to break the movies rules...just kind of detract from the ride... just an opinion though...I was looking forward to this reaction cuz I happen to love the film..and I ended up enjoying the reaction less than I had hoped due to the things you mention

Jay

Looks like this October yall need to binge Friday the 13th and Halloween.

Jay

I think its still a great reaction. But sometimes you can speculate and still let the movie take you for a ride. But a lot of times they both hyperfixate on the why's of things. But i love em both. Hell i watch tons of reactors. They are the only ones i give money to.

DanielK

i am with george on this one, first time i watched this i was constanly thinking about the rules and how to easily deal with the monster

Cc Decc

Simone...is it cliche to have her played by a Canuck? Rachel McAdams perhaps. And of course George should have been played by a younger Bolo Yeung.

luckyopening

In the pool scene, it takes the form of her dad, that is why she chooses not to tell her sister, (not sure if you guys realised that, you didnt mention it) Which implies that the Monster kills you by having intercourse with you as your parent. Very Freudian

Austin P

Another rules based horror movie is Oculus (2013).

Chase Schleich

Sequel coming next year titled "They Follow." It says it takes place 10 years later following the same lead character so it sounds like one of them either passed it on and now it's coming back down the chain or they've kept it for 10 years. BTW, the new big popular horror movie is in theaters now and is doing really well. It's called "Obsession." It looks awesome so I hope you guys watch it when it comes out digitally in a month or two.

Chase Schleich

Pretty sure the demon will just keep walking no matter what. You can cross a mountain or go across an ocean and it will just walk over the mountain or across the ocean floor in order to get to you. All you're doing is buying time, but not as much as you'd really think because it doesn't stop. It walks 24/7. If I left Ohio and moved to Beijing, China, that's 6800 miles away. The demon would be at my door in 3 months. All of that work and you bought 3 months of peace. Your only answer is literally to move to space, but good luck with that lol.

REDR58

The problem is it’s not made very clear that it’s her father. I only knew her father was in the movie by seeing the credits at the end.

REDR58

They have watched Grremlins! Search for it on here.

REDR58

That’s an interesting question if it’s a Shapeshifter because we saw it go from mostly adults to the younger boy with the weird face. The mass between a child and an adult is quite different. So presumably it could transform into something else as well maybe? Or maybe it must stay “human”? A demon bird say a bird of prey could easily take out its victim quite easily from above.

REDR58

The friend group seemed to be more responsible for Jay than her own mother did. She seems strangely detached from the whole thing.

Cc Decc

Funny, I know I have seen this movie and recognized, by feel mostly, a number of the scenes after they happened, but at no point did it come back to me how it was going to play out. I do remember having some George questions though and wondering if it can't run and has a manifested physical presence, could I just shoot the heck out of it?

REDR58

Finally got some time to watch this. Very interesting movie. Oh, and if it wasn't clear (not sure if you quite understood it after reading the trivia) the shell-shaped e-reader thing was a fictional device. You guys didn't seem to pick up on "8-Mile" which was mentioned in the movie and of course was the name of the 2002 movie that starred Eminem, both movies being set in and around Detroit and its suburbs and both movies filmed in the state. The primary actors were indeed all in their late tees or early 20s with the exception of Olivia Luccardi (Yara with the eyeglasses, who gets shot in the leg at the pool): Maika Monroe (Jay Height): Age 20 (Born May 1993) Keir Gilchrist (Paul): Age 20 (Born September 1992) Daniel Zovatto (Hugh/Greg): Age 22 (Born June 1991) Olivia Luccardi (Yara): Age 24 (Born May 1989) Lili Sepe (Kelly): Age 18–19 (Born December 1994) Bailey Spry (Annie): Age 17–18 (Born October 1995) Here is an interesting article analyzing "It Follows" and its message about urban decay: https://slate.com/culture/2015/04/it-follows-how-the-new-movie-uses-detroit-to-explore-the-horror-of-urban-decay.html "How It Follows Uses Detroit to Explore the Horror of Urban Decay By Mark Binelli April 01, 2015 Right from the start of the horror movie It Follows, I recognized my hometown of Detroit—or, more precisely, a suburban residential architecture native to the place. As the camera tracked, eerily, across an unremarkable tree-lined street in the movie’s long opening shot, I spotted the squat red-brick ranch houses of my youth, where, like the soon-to-be-Followed teenagers, I had watched bad science-fiction movies in wood-paneled family rooms and floated in homely above-ground pools in neighbors’ backyards. (We were Italian and so had a rock garden.) I also knew kids who, like one of the teens in the film, were forbidden by their parents from crossing 8 Mile Road and entering the city proper. This moment, which comes fairly late in the picture, is the only explicit regional reference in It Follows, but it’s a telling one, as the tension between Detroit and its suburbs is employed, and upended, by director David Robert Mitchell in the same way he tinkers with genre horror conventions. Detroit has turned up in a number of movies in recent years, mostly thanks to generous Hollywood tax credits doled out by the state of Michigan in an attempt to stir up some new local industry, and cinematographers have, understandably enough, lingered upon Detroit’s photogenic ruins. In A Most Violent Year, that was Detroit doubling for Brooklyn in the bad old days; Transformers have done battle at the old Packard Plant; most baroquely, when Jim Jarmusch decided to pay homage to Huysmans’ Against Nature with a weird movie about vampire aesthetes (Only Lovers Left Alive), he shifted the setting from 19th century France to—where else?—a crumbling mansion in Detroit’s Brush Park. If you haven’t seen It Follows, the scary part, without giving too much away, is a sort of curse that’s transmitted sexually. Once you’ve caught it, you’re followed by zombie-like creatures that only you can see. (In this way, they’re more like ghosts.) The creatures move slowly, but never stop in their pursuit, and the only way to shake the curse is to pass it along to someone else. Despite a premise seemingly complementary to images of Detroit’s desolation, though, as ruin porn goes, It Follows is definitely softcore. Instead, Mitchell makes the city’s suburbs even more sinister than the city itself. While it’s not as if this hasn’t been done before—Mitchell is clearly indebted to Blue Velvet and the photographer Gregory Crewdson—for anyone from the area, there’s a pleasing specificity to this particular depiction of suburban dread. The fact, for instance, that it’s impossible to say when exactly the film takes place, which is a pretty accurate reflection of the anachronistic feel of many older Detroit suburbs. (In It Follows, the kids watch movies on black-and-white televisions, drive ’80s cars, and don’t have cell phones, and one of them scrolls through passages of Dostoevsky on an odd clamshell e-reader.) Likewise, while the central ghost story can be read as both an obvious AIDS metaphor and as broader existential horror, anyone who grew up in the area might also view the unstoppable forces of decay as representative of the widespread suburban fear of the city itself, and all it had come to represent: unplanned obsolescence, crime, and, of course, unchecked blackness. I can remember the racism and paranoia openly expressed by many white suburbanites in the eighties when you’d get them going on the possibility of “Detroit” crossing 8 Mile Road. (You can still find traces of an actual wall that was erected on the suburban side of 8 Mile in the 1940s.) It doesn’t strike me as coincidence that Mitchell, who grew up in suburban Oakland County, has his white heroine catch the curse in Detroit (while having sex in the parking lot of an abandoned factory), and that when the decay follows her to the suburbs, she flees further north with her friends, repeating a pattern started by her parents and grandparents. Today’s Detroit suburbs are far more diverse than those of my youth—the fact that all of the main characters are white seems like another intentional anachronism by Mitchell—and racial fears have been, if not supplanted, then at least supplemented by very real fears of economic decay. Once the embodiment of the American middle-class, where a decent-paying factory job could get you one of those backyard pools and a modest hunting cabin “up north,” Detroit suburbs have been forced of late to reckon with some of the same issues the city has faced for years: foreclosed houses, shuttered businesses, plummeting property values. Last year, an old friend moved back to the area and bought a mansion in one of the toniest neighborhoods in Grosse Pointe for the price of a one-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn. In an even more remarkable reversal of fortune, L. Brooks Patterson, the loathsome, race-baiting County Executive of Oakland County, complained in a speech in November about Detroit companies stealing jobs from the suburbs. The logic of Mitchell’s great propositional title resonates in this context. What follows is what everyone who grew up in the shadows of a city left for dead knows in their bones: that all things must pass, and that your city (or town, or suburb) is next."

Good point. I never thought of that.

I don't know for sure if it's true, but I heard a sequel is in the works. Edit: The next comment down says it is. I didn't see it until I pressed enter.

Trust George to overthin this. Lol

I got bogged at 2 points. First, her God awful form when shooting the revolver, and then when she kept going swimming with the cast on. They're nitpicky things, but I wanted to peek my head through the screen and lecture. I think the brilliance in this movie was laying down a simple rule, and leaving it open to a lot of different questions, while providing very few answers. My initial thought was that it was like Person A is cursed and marked. Person A passes the curse to person B, Person A is still marked, but is no longer actively cursed. Person B is cursed and marked. B passes to C, but remains marked. C is killed, curse reverts back to B, B is followed again. B attempts to pass to D E F all at once, but it passes to D, and then it doesnt matter who B sleeps with, D already has the active curse. Since we dont see what happened on the boat, either D did E and E did F, or you really can pass it to multiple at once. Holy hell, maybe thats what Bonnie Blue was up to...

I think one of the things thats great about the end that feels like was maybe missed by assuming that the man was IT, is that I don't actually think they are being followed at the end. That shot that shows someone walking behind them was just a person. But thats the point. The victims would always be on edge forever. Every person could be a threat.

Regarding the actor personality discussion from the full-length intro: Simone could easily be played by Gwendoline Christie. Very positive, emotional, kind-hearted and loves laughing with friends. George is definitely played by Willem Dafoe. Smart, quick-witted, kind and humble, but also a bit mischievous.

If you liked this, you'll love Tonight She Comes. It's a similar vibe, but even more crazy and tense. It's one of my most favourite indie horror movies ever made.

To answer George’s question of who I’d cast to play me in a biopic personality wise would be either Jack Quaid or Michael Cera

The El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood has a Mighty Wurlitzer, which rises up out of the floor. Not all shows feature it, but I've been a few times, and it's a really fun intro to whatever film you're there to see. I also ate at the Roaring Twenties Pizza and Pipes, in Ellenton, Florida, which was like a long mead hall, rows of tables the length of the building, and a huge, raised Wurlitzer at the front. There were a couple of guys in the area with the skills to play it, and the place really depended on them. Apparently, looking just now, the chain started in 1962, and in the 70s and 80s, there were something like 100 of them around the United States. The walls were full of instruments, all the way around, including weird things, like car horns, and fake birds in cages, which the guy could activate, so the whole room could be playing things. There was also a pot to put suggestions in, and I went up and added "The Imperial March from Star Wars," and maybe an hour later, he actually played it. It was so cool to have instruments all around the room, plus the huge pipe organ (there was like a whole wall of pipes) blasting out the march. I believe all of them are now closed, sadly. All the cool stuff is dying, everywhere.

“If I move to Australia, then what?” Then it gets on a plane. When people think of ways to evade the entity they often make the mistake of treating it like the death snail. It’s not. It is intelligent, it can take circuitous routes, it can use other things. There’s nothing stopping it from hopping on a plane or climbing in the back of a truck to catch up to you.

This was really good. Was dumbfounded how scary it was given how slow the demons are (non jump scare), how visible they are, and that it's often during the day time. Really well done. The only scene that didn't come off quite as scary was the swimming pool scene towards the end. Idk why, I think it was the dude demon. He just wasn't creepy looking. He felt like an actor. Not a 'Sexually Transmitted Demon.'
