Nimona, Paranorman, Weathering with You for more animation

I saw this in the theater with my kid. After the first ten minutes, the theater was dead silent except for the sound of weeping. Suddenly, some good ol' boy in the back yelled, "What the hell was that?" It broke the tension, and we all were swept along. This is why I love going to the theater.

This one always hits me hard. The beginning is a perfect contextual setup for how one feels about everything that happens throughout the movie to Carl and how/why he reacts the way he does. And it's done without a word being said. Journey before destination indeed.

Mike FromOz

My "Up!" story. My Mum was in hospice (end of life) care due to cancer. My Dad had been with her every day, and we took turns to be with her, except for nights when the hospital staff took over. My Dad, my brother and I were all feeling really upset and sad by what was happening, so in an effort to cheer us all up, my brother went to rent a movie for us to watch. Pixar makes fun, happy movies, right? "Up!" had just been released to rent, so he went and got that. Started of ok... then the scenes with his wife. And it hurt even more because Mum had also had miscarriages as well. There was the three of us, trying not to cry as we watched the film. Thank goodness it perked up later on, but damn, the first part almost took us out. Great movie, and I look forward to your reaction to it. I'll probably be shedding a few tears as well, as its inextricably tied to my own life now.

jmundt33a

George spoke repeatedly about the great life Carl & Ellie had that Carl seemed to be discounting. It felt like Carl appreciated that but had a different assessment. “I had a beautiful life because she shared hers with me. And she got…me. Damn it.”

Lintrinsic

Sorry, but I can't rewatch this, saw it at a movie in a park event and it immediately turned me into a sobbing dehydrated mess of snot and tears as I tried to eat a picnic, plus I got sunburnt like I was nosferatu caught in daylight despite applying a metric shit ton of sun-block. Beautiful, sweet movie but despite it being over a decade since that park it's still too soon and I suspect there's not enough intoxicants on the planet to get me through it.

maikeru

I watched the react last night 😋

The beginning is a film within the film that kicks my hearts a*s. 😥

Jacob King

Nimona!!! Onward, The Little Prince

Lukas

Regarding the point on helium and our kind of random use/waste of this finite ressource in balloons: Fittingly enough it's a byproduct of the extraction of the equally finite and fossile natural gas which we just happily burn away for a moment of energy ...

Jeff K.

This is far from my favorite Pixar movie (nothing will ever top Incredibles for me), but the first 10 minutes is the best thing Pixar has ever done.

Matt O'Keefe

Outside of the first 10 min or so, I have never seen this.

Kyle B

My daughter compared Rocky in Project Hail Mary to the dog in this movie coincidently.

DasBigUn

this movie....aaaaa...yes... damn

Jpsynergy

What a great movie, a bookend to a legendary pixar run. Thanks for the react

j c

Technically, George, it was always Up everywhere

Charles Gaba

“They still had a beautiful life together.” —George gets the entire point 5 minutes in.

Gryff

I have played the tune from this movie in so many MMOs just to mess with people XD

sb

In Cleveland Ohio, in 1986, organizers released 1.5 million helium balloons into the sky to set a world record in which they did at the expense of a cold front pushing the balloons toward the ground blanketing Lake Erie while the Coast Guard searched for 2 hard to spot missing fisherman that unfortunately drowned. There were numerous car accidents, animals were freaked out and the balloons that made it UP forced Burke Lakefront Airport to close due to low visibility. What's crazy is that record was broken by Disney for the UK home video release of Aladdin. 🎈 🎈 🎈

Gryff

Michael Giacchino is a menace, and a brilliant composer.

s0rd3z

This is my interpretation as well. Carl was so happy to be with Ellie and his life with her, that near the end he felt that he had somehow taken her dream away from her. The whole movie is him trying to make amends for not fulfilling her dreams only to find out she shared the same view of their life together that he did.

Alex Laime

FYI is it hasn't been mentioned here: . "Lawnchair Larry" Walters in 1982, used dozens of helium-filled weather balloons to lift a chair into the sky. I recall he used a bb gun to shoot the balloons so he could descend.

Morion Williams

Queen of the damned (Ann Rice Vampire) Repo the Genetic Opera (Gothic Musical) God Bless America (funny thought provoking, better than falling down) Fanboys (Hilarious nerd comedy) Sonic ( Sonic, Obviously) 10 Thing I hate about you (Obvious, said you guys where going to) Sex Drive (Very funny, seth green) Jurassic World (Dinos) Free Willy (90's kids grew up on this classic tale) Homeworld Bound (Cute animals, great story, Micheal J Fox) I now pronounce you chuck and Larry (death by laughter) Animatrix (Really cool animated sci-fi) A.I. Artificial Intelligence (Cool and sad Sci-fi) IQ (Awesome Romcom) Mighty Ducks (Feel good sports comedy) Real Steel (Feel good family action comedy) cant hardly Wait (Good graduation comedy) Amazing Spiderman 1/2 (No way home hits different, you'd love it) A score to settle (Good Nicolas Cage Action) Stewart Little (Jonathon Lipnicki, Michael J Fox) The Little Vampire (Jonathon Lipnicki)

Rhiannon

I love Simone's silent cheer when Dug first says "I can smell you!"

maikeru

the chipmunk voice of the dog never stops being cute & funny 😆

maikeru

Yeah that was a bad idea with the balloons in Cleveland, looked cool at first but fucked up everything 😆 there are videos about it on yt

Denashi

The first 10 minutes of Up is one of the most brilliant pieces of visual storytelling, ever... and that is just the beginning of the masterpiece!

John Hoonhorst

His work on Lost is my favorite of his.

Jeff K.

I was just thinking about his work recently because I re-watched a video that Drew Gooden made about LOST, and he spent about 5 minutes in the video talking about Giacchino's work and how impactful it was for that show, and he also specifically pointed out how in that opening 10 minutes of this film, he uses the same melody, just at a different tempo, to deliver such massive emotional gut punches. Same music, arranged differently, giving you both ends of the spectrum between happy and delighted, and then emotionally devastating.

Thall

The taste and texture combination of cheese makes me gag. Melt it a little, I love cheese, but just cheese? Can't handle it. Other than that, texture in food is very important, especially in salad. That's why you add lots of stuff to salad! Crunchy, chewy, etc. Makes it more interesting to eat and is great for taste too

Canadianant

This is top tier Pixar. The 10 minutes silent movie part is amount the best film making of all time. If that doesn't make you emotional, watching that you're a bloody Stone

Happy Hanukkah

I decided to take your word for it, and I feel very let down. I suppose "Pixar" should have served as sufficient context. :-P

Happy Hanukkah

As God is my witness, I thought the balloons would fly up and away.

Honky Tonk Badong Badong

My last movie is going to be "2001: A Space Odyssey." I'm going to sing along to "Daisy." EDIT: If the timing doesn't work out, then I'll just lie in my bed pointing at something.

funky weapon

I've seen this movie a few times since 2009. I have, without fail, bawled like a baby during Carl and Ellie's life story. every single goddamn time.

Ceruleo

This is my favorite reaction to up because George was the first I have seen to point out that Carl and Ellie had a wonderful life together and that the beginning wasn't the saddest thing ever.

Bert

Texture is very important in food imo. I'm perhaps extra sensitive for reasons, but for example I don't like many types of beans BECAUSE of the texture - the mealy, powdery texture that reminds me of lumps of flour that many beans have grosses me out for example. Not cultural though, personal.

Cally

I strongly recommend "A Man Called Otto" starring Tom Hanks as a similarly grumpy old man.

Kinokind

Doubtless one of Pixar's best, it's up there with "WALL-E." I think their film of late have tackled lighter issues, where these films went after big existential themes. As for the animation - it was so full of beautiful, subtle little details - like that t-shirt tag. Unless I'm mistaken, for computer animation they have to model every individual object. So someone at Pixar knows exactly how many balloons it took to lift Mr. Fredricksen's house.

Angela D. Mitchell

I'm so sorry for your loss. But that must have been brutal for your dad and all of you! I lost both parents to illness via hospice as well and I can't imagine watching UP during that time. I would have needed a bucket to cry in.

Angela D. Mitchell

I loved that George said that. He absolutely got the point right then and there.

Angela D. Mitchell

This is absolutely one of his best scores of all time. It's so lovely.

Angela D. Mitchell

I loved Simone's subtle reaction to that first devastating 10 minutes, because she knew what was coming and meanwhile, George is over there going, "WHAT?!" at all the emotion. That first sequence really does set everything up in such a great way. I love that the movie is ultimately about found family, and that it's not afraid to address loss. Everyone in this movie lost someone, it's just a question of how they go on. I love the way Carl finally chooses to go on, with a little boy who needed a dad, and a dog that needed a home. He thought his life was over but there was still so much happiness left. My Dad died last month, and my family is still coming to terms with it. I cried again watching it here, but I needed the reminder. There are still adventures left to live even after loss. And I laughed out loud at George's "Oh, f_ck right off!" at the revealed note from Ellie at the end. It definitely hits you in the heart.

Monica Alarcon

Great reaction!!! I can't wait till you do Finding Nemo so I can make a "Good Pixar" marathon

Amelie W

I do wonder if we'll get to a point where it's worth fusing helium to fill our balloons. (Yeah, we can actually create helium with nuclear fusion, it's just really really expensive.)

FranciscoGios

I shit you not I thought this movie ended with Carl dying after he gave Russel his ceremonial pin but I guess It didn’t, maybe I’m thinking about a different story. If you guys want to see more Carl & Dug watch an 8 minute movie in Disney Plus called Carl’s Date from 2023.

Amelie W

Fairly enlightening. To save folks the trouble, the video has a clip by Pixar folks talking about how the first thing they did for the movie was working out the math (of course it was), and instead of a realistic 30 million balloons they decided on about ten thousand. "So we cheated a little."

Mike FromOz

We were so unprepared for it. It was supposed to be something which could take our minds off of what was happening, but nope! We did end up enjoying it though, but man, the first part of it was rough. When my father was in hospice, for cancer once again, I just had us watch youtube videos of people making things, as he was a mechanic and engineer. I think he enjoyed them, and allowed him to think back on his life fondly before he passed. The holes from their loss are still there in my heart, but I keep the loving memory of them there too to help heal them over.

MacGuffinStuff

Chewy textures are the worst for me, I hate chewy stuff, even more than slimy. I hear you Simone, I don't have nightmares but I have a recurring dream where I'm on a college campus, went to four, and I'm trying to leave but I keep getting lost and on the way I find new departments and people I've known are there and walk with me a while. They're really fuckin weird. Anyway, I'm just gonna go ahead and watch this movie I already know that, due to changes in pressure and humidity is likely going to cause weather related condensation in the eyes.

Buhr

Kevin is my dream character job at Disney.

George, you asked about Russell being Asian, he is voiced by Jordan Nagai who is a retired child actor of Japanese descent and Russell is Pixar's first lead Asian character. The late Ed Asner who had a 68-year career in the entertainment industry, played Santa Clause in "Elf" with Will Ferrell: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpfKcfzOKQk Asner is however most famous in the US as starring opposite Mary Tyler Moore in the 1970-1977 TV series "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" where he played the fictional TV news producer Lou Grant: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zj286uBKCu0 He later starred in the 1977-1982 spin-off series "Lou Grant" as the same character from the earlier show, this time employed as a newspaper editor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYDvoDNYRJ0 He was also in the 8th season episode of "The Simpsons" called "Guess Who's Coming to Criticize Dinner?" Whenever I see older photographs of people, especially in the era before self-timers, I always wonder about the photographer. What was that person's life like? No one ever talks about the often anonymous photographer!

Simon Pegged Me

I'm generally okay with texture, but I have trouble handling the viscous mucus inside steamed or boiled okra. It triggers my gag reflex.

Many of the photos in the adventure book during the credits line up with the roles on each page (after the producers, because no one knows what they do): story by — Carl, Russell, and Dug on the picnic hill, bookending the story. music by — Carl plays water-filled glasses with spoon, Russell plays trumpet, Dug howls. story supervisor — Carl tells the camp kids a scary story around a campfire. film editor — Carl and Russell go to the premiere of Star Wars. (Russ is 8, born c. 1969) production designer — Russell, Dug, draw chalk figures on sidewalk. supervising technical director — Carl can't figure out computer mouse. production manager — Dug produces a ton of puppies. supervising animator — 3 pics of Dug running, like a run cycle/Muybridge frames. directors of photography — 2 photo strips of Carl and Russell from a photobooth. sets supervisor — Carl takes the campers to the zoo (like a location shoot day?). effects supervisor — Russell blow dries Dug (it's like an effect, right?) shading art direction — Carl and Russell make shadow puppets, Dug watches. sound designer — Carl and Russell play with tin can and string "telephone". During the screenplay page, the dogs in the photo are all playing with old people, and it looks like it's probably Shady Oaks; Carl may have decided to live there after all, but all the other pics show that Russell takes him out for adventures all the time, the ones Ellie hoped he'd have.

I don't know how many times I saw people comment to random places online "The first 10 minutes of this film are still a better love story than Twilight," when this movie first came out, one year after the Twilight movie.

Thall

I am convinced the Dogs in double decker attack planes were a nod to Tailspin!

Kevin Cormier

Yeah, that reaction from George after the book was maybe one of his best.

fwfwfwfwf wfwfw

i saw the scene where they are just about to introduce Doug and you and just Simone's face anticipated excitement and a huge smile across here face. I love Doug even though i have not met him :-P

fwfwfwfwf wfwfw

i also love that crazy bird, goble goble goble.

Matthew Doherty

George: "They had was seemed like a dream, happy life." Hold on to that thought, George.

REDR58

Double decker attack planes! Interesting way of putting it! Those were biplanes. There were even triplanes (3 stacked/triple-decker) fighter planes in WW1. And incidentally, there were airships that carried fighter planes internally just like we see in the movie. In the 1930, the US Navy operated a pair of airships, the USS Akron and USS Macon that each carried 5 or 6 fighter or scout planes internally. But I don’t know why Charles Muntz needed fighter planes aboard his airship here!

Michael Kemmet

I wish more reactors would notice that a lot of Pixar films do this. I suspect the first pictures in the scrapbook are personal nods: Director - Russel LEADS Carl across the street Co-Director - Russel and Carl chasing Dug who's chasing a squirrel (I suspect the co-director was responsible for trying to keep the artistic team on-task) Producer - Russel and Carl 'gone fishing' - I bet this is a joke about the team slacking off (the "camera" is the producer that's the studio's representative)

Michael Kemmet

Maybe it's been mentioned(or you guys caught it in the edit process), but there are a few things hinted at in the movie, but not pointed out directly. 1. It's open to debate whether Ellie and Carl had a miscarriage that resulted in Ellie not being able to have kids, or if they were trying to get pregnant and the doctor scene was them learning about her infertility. I tend to go with the former due to them actually setting up a nursery and Ellie's despair afterward. Whichever it is, it was certainly an emotional gut punch. 2. Ellie filled out the scrapbook while she was in the hospital. There are scrapbooking supplies on the end table by her bed. She knew Carl was going to turn inward and blame himself after she passed and wanted him to keep going. But Carl was in too much pain to look back through the scrapbook and see her message. 3. It probably doesn't mean anything, but the return address on the envelope under the Shady Oaks brochure in the mailbox was Venezuela Tourist Info. It's safe to assume the travel agent that Carl bought the tickets from got Carl on a mailing list for tourist info. Like I said, it probably doesn't mean anything. 4. Russell's parents divorced and his dad remarried. And then his dad got so involved with his new family that he basically abandoned Russell. And Russell's new stepmother wasn't helping(she was the one that told Russell he was calling too much and bothering his dad). edit: One of these days I'm going to remember to wait until after the trivia section to type something out. :D

Thall

I couldn't think of the english phrase, so the german one came out, lol. I know about the airships! Been a big fan of the concept ever since I was a child. Crimson Skies was my jam. I would think Muntz used the planes for scouting, seems more convenient than an airship for that. Putting tranquilizer guns on them to catch Kevin... might be something he would come up with!

Elijah

When I went to uni for visual effects, Up was always used as an example of great colour theory. The way Carl’s life with Ellie goes from colourful to washed out when she passes away before Russell brings the colour back is beautifully done.

REDR58

German, excellent! The “triplane” I spoke of is the Fokker Dr.I Dreidecker (triplane). There is an old DOS PC game called “Air Power” that I played a lot back in the day and it’s basically fantasy air combat between airships and fighter planes that launch and are recovered in the air. I spent many hours with that game. It’s a more sim/strategy version of Crimson Skies and might be worth a try if you can get it to run! https://www.myabandonware.com/game/air-power-battle-in-the-skies-2td

The Foreigner- Jackie Chan 💚💚💚

KM

I'm scared of heights, so this movie is very stressful for me. I love this movie, though, and it's such a unique story! That opening is amazing. I think Russell was the first major Asian-American character in a Pixar movie.

Christopher Carson

A negative texture I didn't have as a kid but now have is hardened sugar on things?.?. Like a blueberry muffin with grainy sugar on top is like nails on a chalkboard to me.

Frank

I need to have some kids to get into these animated movies y'all watch. I really try to get into them and watch along, but for whatever reason I just can't. Even the classics I watched as a kid like Toy Story I can't. To each their own. I do respect that y'all do every genre, though, so everyone gets something to enjoy.
