Mike FromOz

Dammit, I was hoping the thumbnail was going to be George as the girl on the beach. You'll know which one. 10/10 though, it's horrifying 🤣

funky weapon

good god y'all did Simone real dirty on this one 😂

Robert Cooper

Meh. This movie is ok. It's just there to be a double feature with Spies Like Us. Also, Simone didn't immediately clock Robert Picard?

Lloyd Franklin

I really hope Oscar gets added to the polls. It’s a fantastic comedy and a passion project for Sylvester Stallone.

Amper Sand

hahaha, looking forward to rewatch it and see your reaction :)

Icarius

"Maybe it doesn't have to be a spoof, could just be a Naked Gun thing" The Naked Gun spoofs Dirty Harry and other Cop movies

Haye Zeus

Yes! This is my favorite spoof movie. So much creativity is put into the gags and jokes. And a young Val Kilmer totally kills it.

Senec

Well, never could get a good read on the color of Simone's eyes before. Now I can. Definitely dont feel good about knowing it now though lol

David Zabel

It's less than ok. It sucks. I've never seen why people think it's so hilarious. A few chuckles here and there but that's it. I love the ZAZ movies but they really laid an egg with this one. I'm skipping this one.

Matt O'Keefe

Yeah, I was like what George? They need to watch Dirty Harry. Maybe after they start DS9.

Icarius

Took me 30 years to see it and finally get the "That's my policy" joke 😂

Thall

The General at the start is Picards brother!

Scott CineRam

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So awesome!!!

Leenis

I had a 1974 ford pinto as a teen. That model had the gas station in an odd place where if a pinto got rear ended it had a chance of exploding. I actually had a bumper sticker that said, "This car explodes on impact."

Bobby Glanton

Its funny Val Kilmer and Michael Gough would later star in Batman Forever.

mojo shivers

Definitely my favorite of the Zucker/Abrahams style parody movies. Naked Gun and Airplane are classics in their own right but I think joke for joke more land in Top Secret! than those other movies. It’s the only one I’ve watched 15-20 times and will watch to completion if I see it on anywhere. I love this film.

Scurvyville

That underwater scene! 🤌🤌🤌

Darren Harrison

So many 1970s/1980s jokes went totally over George and Simone's heads. As someone who was a teenager when this movie came out many of my favorite funny moments received blank impressions from both. I met the real Christopher Atkins (who starred in "The Blue Lagoon" which this movie parodied) many years ago at a fan convention.

Brandon

Ahhh, the days when comedies wouldn't just phone it in with the filmmaking. The backwards scene, the underwater fight. Amazing stuff. I also love the perspective jokes. There's the giant phone, but I love the scene where the General looks like he has his feet up on his desk, only for him to stand up and show that his boots were just on his desk in that position.

Scurvyville

Now watch Real Genius. Kilmer really gets to flex his comedy side there as well.

keoma songs

The best of these movies left is THE KENTUCKY FRIED MOVIE (1977). Written by the Zucker Abraham Zucker team but directed by John Landis. You already saw ENTER THE DRAGON so you've been prepped enough. KENTUCKY FRIED MOVIE is going to blow your minds!

Ross E Bailey

It’s massively under appreciated when you take into account what they actually did in terms of production. Most films, even summer action films of the period, don’t combine such large amounts of special props, prosthetic makeup, animatronics, wire work, stunts, large sets, miniatures, animals, and *dance sequences* like Top Secret! does. The movie itself considers them all throwaways so you don’t think about it much…but the film is an amazing achievement for Pinewood Studios and the British film industry as a whole. SO glad George and Simone finally got to it!

Zoltán Bublos

I hope they will watch Loaded Weapon too someday. (it's a spoof about Lethal Weapons)

Cc Decc

George actually raises an interesting point by accident -- while there were some spoof success stories in the 90s and early 2000s (the Hot Shots movies, Not Another Teen movie etc.), the fact is the spoof idea as it evolved is NOT what the ZAZ team initially created back in the late 70s/early 80s. While their spoofs sometimes used obscure source materials as a base, they were spoofing entire genres, not sitting around mechanically spoofing scene after scene from various popular movies. Part of the death of the genre is when it got trite and played like just a series of skits entirely dependent on other movies. The early ZAZ flicks were largely standalone, with just a handful of scenes that were clearly identifiable as spoofing specific scenes from other movies (including Blue Lagoon here).

Cc Decc

it should be noted that KFM was kind of the rough draft/film student experiment for the ZAZ team. The genius is there, and even the origin of some of the later jokes, but its more erratic and largely just a series of funny skits showing off their emerging style.

keoma songs

And it's awesome. The Enter the Dragon film within a film parody is incredible, as are most of the skits. They don't all hit, but it's arguably a more successful comedy than Top Secret and it's oddly broad Rock and Roll teen idol feature mixed with ww2 and spy films. I'd expect George and Simone to enjoy KFM more. Well, at least George anyway due to reasons.

Jeff K.

Absolutely. It’s the other cult classic comedy movie from the 1980s that Val did. I adore that movie so much.

djKENTO

Leroy Neiman was an expressionist painter whose work focused mostly on athletes and celebrities, especially boxers. He did a painting of Rocky for Rocky IV and another giant one for Rocky Balboa which is sitting in his restaurant. Personally I love his art. I think he's captured some great American Icons in a unique colorful way. Some people say it's pedestrian because it uses popular figures but I don't fucking care. Dude was an icon.

Jeff K.

You’re just ready for them to experience the obligatory butt in the moonlight walk.

Eddy V Ruiz II

There is technically one more Zucker, Abrams, Zucker movie that came before Airplane! and it was directed by John Landis. The Kentucky Fried Movie. If you decide to watch it I can only say Good Luck

Jeff K.

I despise what spoof films have become. It’s nothing but “Eh? See that? Do you get the reference we’re making? What? You want an actual gag? But isn’t showing an exaggerated version of a character from a movie you recognize good enough?”

Eddy V Ruiz II

One of my go to VK movies I watch it multiple times a year

Eddy V Ruiz II

They are gonna miss alot of the 70's TV references though... Still I dream of the day they watch that

Eddy V Ruiz II

and the 3 guards that break into the "Prop Room" are ZAZ

Jonathan Eaton

George, Val and Cher ARE from two different eras. When this movie came out she would have been 38 and he was 24.

Duane Klaus

This was a spoof not of a movie but of two genre of films. Spy movies and Elvis movies.. There are jokes Simone and George missed or didn't get but I wouldn't expect them to as they are dated jokes. Such as the Montgomery Ward mailing list. Today's equivalent would be spam calling list. There are a lot of jokes in the background to be easily missed as well. Neither reacted to the "granny" in the Skeet Surfing video.

Ross E Bailey

And Publisher’s Clearing House is now dead and gone, and I guess is mainly a US thing anyway. The biggest one is probably Mel Torme…much more widely known back then, especially for his infrequent gust spots on NBC’s Night Court. It’s the risk these comedies run, including topical humor for the short term gain…

Ross E Bailey

He was definitely considered her Boy Toy by the public and media at large!

Ross E Bailey

The best Boot Humor in cinema history…

Ross E Bailey

On the topic of spoof movies…I do hope George and Simone can find it in their hearts to consider Amazon Women on the Moon…it’s certainly spiritually adjacent and a lot of it is funny as hell!

Monica Alarcon

Thank you so much. I've been campaigning for you to watch this for years now (just subtle comments from time to time, not like spamming) and now I can die happy!! I was so looking forward to this that I got up extra early today and watched the whole movie before work... I recommend a rewatch. There are so many sight gags that you missed a few really good ones. But that's understandable. Thank you again

REDR58

The solution to that is to get them to watch a sampling of some of those 70s TV show episodes...

REDR58

We really need to encourage them to watch more of these older movies before the spoof versions.

REDR58

Are we suggesting they watch "The Blue Lagoon"?

Dioskur

Ok so heres the point: This is THE comedy of my younger days, but it was before I learned to understand English without problems. So I watched the german version. It was awesome! It is even possible that it is better that way because the west-german / east-german conflicht works great with jokes like this. I am curious how it will turn out now that I watch the original :) very nice surprise!

Matt O'Keefe

Surprised they haven't done Dirty Harry considering they have done older Clint Eastwood movies already.

Andrew

I like LeRoy Nieman paintings.

Icarius

Nah, I watched TNG 100 times before Dirty Harry. And they could have watched The Blue Lagoon or some Elvis movie before this, but they got it

John

Real Genius is great

Darren Harrison

I think they should. At least they had seen “The Great Escape” so they caught that reference :)

Christian Da Silva

Hi George, this won second place back on june 01 when The Cable Guy was third place (with just 60 people under this movie choice)... Does this mean that you'll be watching The Cable Guy hopefully a month from now?

Icarius

Aside from the NG remake that parodied itself, and Scary Movie 6, spoof movies have all but stopped. I looked for most recent ones and got two I'd never heard of: Fackham Hall (spoofs Downton Abbey) and Not Another Church Movie (spoofs Tyler Perry and stars Jamie Foxx and Mickey Rourke as God and the Devil, Imdb 2.3, box office $0.57m)

Icarius

NO! THIS IS 814 PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY! 1014 IS TWO BLOCKS UP THAT WAY!

Monica Alarcon

Buuuut if you could react to Walk Hard, Peter Jackson's Braindead/Dead Alive, The Last Starfighter, Loaded Weapon 1, and a whole lot more 80s horror that would be awesome.

TexasNight

Yeah. " A fistful of yen" - that *was* awesome!

REDR58

I agree!

JayF

There was about a 13 year gap between Cher and Val Kilmer when they dated. Nothing new for Cher as she has often dated younger men. She's the female Leo of her time.

Steve Mercier

"Listen to me, Hillary. I'm not the first guy who fell in love with a woman that he met at a restaurant who turned out to be the daughter of a kidnapped scientist, only to lose her to her childhood lover who she last saw on a deserted island, who then turned out fifteen years later to be the leader of the French underground." "I know. It all sounds like some bad movie."

Stephen Morris

The one German Officer is played by the actor who played Picards Brother.

McShades

The Island scene was a parody of the movie "Blue Lagoon" which had Brooke Shields in it when she was a teenager.

Max Krause

That was a hilarious watch as a German. Interesting to see us as the almost but not quite Nazi villains who are still very much into Nazi stuff. xD If you're curious, I made a double take of all the German spoken in this. Pretty much all of it is either made up or almost unintelligible as they didn't use German actors, which was the style at the time. The thing I'm most "upset" about is when they announced the East German national anthem and then played something completely different. "Auferstanden aus Ruinen" (Risen from Ruins) was an incredible anthem and I wish they would have made it the official one after reunification. I highly recommend listening to it on Youtube with subtitles, the lyrics are quite touching and it has a great melody. (All of that was before my time and I'm from west Germany, so no nostalgic bias on that opinion)

Canadianant

If you want to see more of Val Kilmer singing , your could watch Olivier stone' s The doors biopic with kilmer playing Jim Morrison.

Litywinds

If you would like to see another Val Kilmer film in his early years, A Man Who Broke a 1000 Chains is worth a look.

Litywinds

The scene about Nick translating in the train about the Montgomery Ward mailing list. He is basically mocking the German guard because like Sears and JC Penny, Montgomery Ward also had a catalog that was sent in the mail. But by 1980s the quality of the products were of a lower quality than either Sears or JC Penny.

Martin

I’d like to humbly request another great comedy featuring a young Val Kilmer: Real Genius. One of the best comedies of the 80’s. If you know, you know.

Ross E Bailey

Yeah, they’ve pretty much stopped…and not a moment too soon! I was ready to hunt down the guys who kept putting out cheap, lazy crap like Disaster Movie. Entire generations know spoof movies only by those inept carbon copies!

Dan

Yes, stamps for "Top Secret" and other classifications were real (and probably still are but much rarer in these days of electronic documents). I'm not sure if any had the exclamation mark, though. If (at least in the UK) a typed or electronic document was originally written to be at a certain classification then it'll probably just be typed as part of the document, though even then a stamp might be used on a physical document to raise or lower its classification. A couple of other common misconceptions about classifications etc... Contrary to what you might expect, a "Top Secret" classification (in the UK, US, and likely elsewhere) does not actually imply that the document is the most secret thing there is, it's more that for additional control there are special modifiers/code words/access regimes/etc that can be applied rather than just going up higher on a linear scale of classification. Also, a security clearance at any level does not automatically grant you access to anything - it *permits* you to have access if required for your job, authorised by the appropriate person, etc. The idea of someone coming in and demanding access by waving their high-level clearance at someone is just a movie trope.

Brandon

I hope they never run out of great movies to watch before having to resort to a 'Blue Lagoon' reaction. 😏

s0rd3z

Movies like this really depend on that lead actor straight man role to work IMO. Leslie Nielsen is the king but Kilmer nails it in this one. Also fun fact the German officer that imprisons Kilmer's character is Picards grumpy older brother from Family.

Simone's Coconut Squire

Re: The Pinto. It was actually a notoriously dangerous car when it debuted. If I remember right, in rear end collisions, the bolts holding the rear bumper tended to puncture the gas tank, even at relatively low speeds.

Simone's Coconut Squire

Re: Cher You’re not wrong. She had a reputation for dating younger men.

REDR58

I say do it now, for the pop culture education.

Cc Decc

The funny thing is, that somewhere, way back, and I have no memory of what reaction it was, but George spontaneously mentioned Blue Lagoon in a way that made me think that he knew of it for some reason. But in this video he seemed baffled by the Blue Lagoon parody/references.

Jeremy

You should check out The Doors if you want to see more of Kilmer's singing.

FranciscoGios

Most of the major studios have what they call Production Archivists; they are in charge in handling physical negatives, props, and corporate history. I’m sure that’s how they kept that copy of Peter Cushing’s face. I’m surprised nobody has told you guys this studios that can afford warehouses full of their archives are a thing.

Jesse Coombs

This was wonderful. Maybe the most iconic Val Kilmer performance would be in "The Doors". Highly recommended. I'd also recommend "Spartan", a very tightly-written thriller written and directed by David Mamet.

Matt Blanchette

Let me be the first to inform folx that, just like "AIRPLANE!" taking the skeleton of its plot from "ZERO HOUR!", often with direct line quotes, "TOP SECRET!" has its own skeleton pilfered from an actual forgotten Hollywood World War II movie, starring Hedy (NOT Hedley) Lamarr, Paul Henreid, and a good chunk of the supporting cast of "Casablanca", entitled "THE CONSPIRATORS": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Conspirators_(1944_film) Even some of the shots in each film's sequences are identical, only "TOP SECRET!" plays them for comedy! (And, in case you might not've realised, that's a very young Ian McNeice who isn't actually peddling "phony dog poo".)

Matt Blanchette

...and it flopped. :-( Real shame, but an absolutely DELIGHTFUL film.

Matt Blanchette

Spare them -- make them watch the 1940s version, instead. Novelty factor.

Matt Blanchette

The guy who threatens him in the train car is Dim from "A Clockwork Orange"!

Matt Blanchette

"THAT WAS SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK DOING JULIUS CAESAR, YOU MORON! You killed three actors -- GOOD ones!"

Matt Blanchette

"due to reasons" ...what, the racism? :-/

Matt Blanchette

I see you, too, are a moron who only believes what he reads in the New York Times!

Matt Blanchette

He was on "SEINFELD"! "The Jimmy", remember? (And, hilariously, Tracy Torme, one of the writers on "TNG", was his son!)

keoma songs

No, he would enjoy it more because of 'visual stimuli' that he frequently reacts positively to.

Cc Decc

I went and looked up Auferstanden aus Ruinen and the lyrics were a pleasant surprise. I always thought the Soviet Union's anthem was amazing musically. But when I finally saw the lyrics accompanying the epic music it was all the standard propaganda nonsense. Not really a surprise of course, but Auferstanden aus Ruinen was a lot more thoughtful.

Monica Alarcon

Oh yeah. I forgot UHF and Kentucky Fried Movie.

Monica Alarcon

OH yes!! also The Fisher King... and more Terry Gilliam like Time Bandits and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen... and more wes anderson too... any of his movies besides the one you arleady watched... I know you usually do more popular movies to help the youtube algorithm but I'm sure if you do some cult classics and lesser known movies it would help get you more patrons.... oh and while I'm at it.. my new top movie in my wish list for you to react to is... Mel Brooks' Silent Movie... (And, time permitting, The original Producers and High Anxiety)

MacGuffinStuff

REAL GENIUS, first thing I have to say, that's to me (young) Val Kilmer's definitive role, pre-Iceman. That movie is a classic for some of us 80s kids, some might say cult classic. Post-Ice he was in so many things, but finding out in the trivia he was also singing, and the Elvis thing, reminded me of two specific movies but I won't say because I don't if there's any spoilers, but if you know... One is pretty cool, probably a cult classic, the other I don't remember.

Drew Acheson

Did anyone else clock that the German general is the same actor that play Captain Picard's brother?

REDR58

Yes, several times below

REDR58

Yeah The Doors is well worth a watch.

REDR58

That was the late Warren Clarke.

REDR58

No lame "dry for wet" here!

REDR58

Unappreciated in its time!

REDR58

The Fisher King is a magnificent film.

REDR58

Yeah that was hilarious!

REDR58

Oh, they may as well be WW2 Nazi/Wehrmacht soldiers as they are dressed just like and act just like the stereotypical Nazi seen in many a war movie.

REDR58

First time watch. I enjoyed (of course) the Philadelphia reference here but can find no particular connection with anyone in the movie to the city. I think Simone caught a glimpse of reference to the Coppertone suntan girl ad which was of course a real thing drawn by pin-up artist Joyce Ballantyne: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coppertone_sign The thing about the mannish East German female athletes was that between the 1960s-1980s the East Germans were doping their athletes and in particular the female athletes were suspiciously...bulky: https://ethicsunwrapped.utexas.edu/case-study/east-germanys-doping-machine There is even a joke about this in a Season 4 episode of The Simpsons about the "East German 'women'": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_F71LzznMbI The mention of L. Ron Hubbard books of course reminds me of those old "Dianetics" commercials that were on TV a lot in the 1980s and 1990s: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N595TpC1-Fg There seems to be a reference to the truck fight sequence from Raiders of the Lost Ark during the truck fight sequence of Top Secret: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZclOEGtikt8 "Déjà Vu" is played by Jim Carter who is probably most well-known as playing Carson on "Downton Abbey": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLRyKwOVKds

Simon Pegged Me

The Fisher King is one of my favorites. Before streaming, when channel surfing was the thing, I'd stop any time I came across it.

Nabikon

I agree. Considering the plot I’d say it’s best they skip it

Matt O'Keefe

Garak on DS9 is played by Andrew Robinson, who plays a important character in Dirty Harry.

Icarius

Well aware

Ross E Bailey

Makeup departments would often archive their facial castings of actors, the Westmore Universal makeup department had quite a collection. In the case of Top Secret!, Stuart Freeborn was the chief makeup artist, and photos of his workshop reveal a wide variety of facial castings and full dummy heads made from them. It’s not surprising that Cushing’s head cast would have survived intact given Freeborn’s pride in his work!

OddThomas

For more Val Kilmer: Batman Forever

Skyruff Creative

Cher is almost 15 years older then Val. However, they became famous as actors about the same time as Cher started off with a singing career and later transitioned to acting.

Maria Forsström

You guys should also watch "Spy Hard" (1996) starring Leslie Nielsen!

your local cryptid

this movie tried to kill me when i was little. the bike-shooing bit made me laugh so much it turned into a bad asthma attack

Vincent Masschelein

The Dutch word you're looking for is "swaffelen". It's a verb...

ericaleigh

Recommending I'm Gonna Git You Sucka, Blaxploitation parody film from late 80s.

Angzarr

George: That's Peter Cushing. Simone: I don't know who that is. Me: Peter Cushing lives in Whitstable. He goes shopping on his bicycle. I have seen him buying vegetables. Peter Cushing lives in Whitstable. --- It is quite impressive that they got a cow to do all that. They are not at all bright. --- And no, he does not have to do that for that gun.

Angzarr

Ah, I knew he looked familiar, but I never made the conection!

Angzarr

At the beginning when G&S were trying to figure out if the setting was WW2 Germany or cold war East Germany, I had to laugh, because the movie never quite figures it out either! It's my favorite gag in the movie really, the fact that it doesn't seem to know there's a difference. Whichever one works better for the scene, that's which one it is.

Marcus Hicks

What I loved about this movie is that whilst it is set in the Cold War, it is so obviously parodying World War 2 era spy films.

Marcus Hicks

Yet ironically, Airplane is almost a scene-for-scene remake of Zero Hour.....but it worked so well as a spoof 😆.

Marcus Hicks

Yeah, I lost interest in new Spoof Films towards the end of the 90s.

Merlin's Merkin

Any French or Quebecois speakers wanna reveal what Simone said?

thomas king

Val Kilmer did sing his songs. He also did so in the Doors

Twiska Brand

You mentioned that the ending felt a lot like Casablanca. The whole Nigel subplot is a reference to Casablanca. Remember, in that movie, the love interest gets involved with the main character because she thinks her husband is dead, but goes back to him when she finds out he is alive. She even says she needs to stay with him because he is too important to the resistance. In this one, the old lover is a traitor, so she can leave him guilt-free.

Ian

I believe there is one more Zuck Abe Zuck movie you haven't watched. Kentucky Fried Movie? Have you done that one?
