STAR TREK DAY!! The only day in the week I can be happy right now...

Carlisle Richards

First question: "Why don't they wear suits?" They don't have to; they already know the atmosphere on the ship before beaming aboard.

Gizmo_Mogwai_

Question, I'm new member and checking out some past reactions. Have either of them ever checked out BSG? Just curious if they haven't given how much they enjoy sci-fi

Robert Cooper

It's not on the Enterprise, but "Star Trek: Resurgence" is great.

REDR58

They really should be wearing environment suits.

blerbaberpaterb

yeaaah no... the reason for suits in this scenario isnt for whats already there, its for the unpredictable thing that can happen.... otherwise thats like telling a construction worker "why bother with helmets you already know where everything is."

Mike Jenson

Simone, the closest game that you're looking for is called Starship Simulator. It's not Star Trek but it's as close to it as possible. You can download the demo from steam, and fallow it's development on YouTube.

drunkemonkie .

I got some moonsugar if you need George..gotta keep pumping out that skooma

ChiefKC

Star Trek Day!

ChiefKC

They haven't reacted to BSG yet although that would be a good one as well as Stargate SG-1.

Andrew

Not yet. Hope they get to it some day.

ChiefKC

I know that Supernatural isn't exactly the type of show they would watch, however I would love to see them react to that.

Elisa H.

E11 - if she gets to spend time with Picard I wonder if Simone's answer changes about going to Rivendale ? - directed by Patrick Stewart? Has he directed before.

ChiefKC

A good song about the internet can be foulnd in the play "Avenue Q". it's titled "The Internet is for Porn".

TalynOne

SG-1 would be fun, but it's a huge commitment, they already react to so much stuff. Even the TOS/TNG run they're doing is an extra thing they're doing because they want to, it's their "extra" slot.

REDR58

Hero Worship The “SS Vico” (not USS) is an Oberth-class vessel, the same type of ship seen in the TNG episode “The Naked Now” as “SS Tsiolkovsky” (not USS!), in the TNG episodes “The Drumhead” and “The Game” as “USS Cochrane” (not “SS”!), in Star Trek III as “USS Grissom (not “SS”!) and the USS Copernicus (not “SS”!) as seen in Star Trek IV. Interesting looking ship. It seems very odd to put Timothy in school right away! We have not seen the Breen yet, George. Timothy is played by Joshua Harris who should be very familiar to fans of Twin Peaks as the delightful “Little Nicky.” He was also in the long-running series “Dallas” (1978-1991) from 1985 to 1991). When Timothy starts to yawn while painting and Data suggests he should to return to his quarters, again, why they letting a young child stay by himself?

Data Cable

There's a B/W candid photo of Patrick Stewart in costume for Beverly's flashback from "Violations" that often gets reposted, which is mis-attributed as an early test of a studio-mandated hairpiece. Someone probably ran across it and made an assumption, based on the season 1/2 uniform. The "space bandage" on his right temple is visible, though not prominent, as it's a head-on view.

ChiefKC

I agree it is a big commitment and I wouldn't expect them to do it until after they finish Star Trek. BSG would be a faster one since there was only 76 episodes.

TomGas2025

The answer from a showrunner perspective is eaay...budgetconstraints😁😁

akaTheBAY-AY-RON

Look George... Skooma tore my whole family apart. I myself also had my battles with jet and buffout. It affects millions of people. I just think you should be a little more sensitive, that's all.

REDR58

Violations Interesting that Crusher speaks to another doctor (Martin, played by Rick Fitts) in Sickbay who actually responds! Of course, that character is needed to speak because Crusher gets taken off the board. During the morgue memory scene, the actor playing the deceased Jack Crusher is again played by Doug Wert, who appeared as a hologram that Wesley watched left behind by his father in the episode “Family.” Also in that scene, that is Gates McFadden’s real, straighter hair and not the wig she normally wears. It is one of the few times her real hair is seen in the show.

Jon

Simone, if you happen to read these/this, Star Trek MtG is available for preorder. Thought that'd be a thing you're into. P.S., what would a George themed deck be/look like? Whether commander or standard.

REDR58

It’s even said in the episode that the Vico is structurally compromised. At least TOS Animated had those personal force field “suits.”

REDR58

Stewart directed a total of 5 TNG episodes, so far : "In Theory" (Season 4, Episode 25), "Hero Worship" (Season 5, Episode 11), a single episode from Season 6 and 2 from Season 7.

Runes N Raccoons

But they knew the ship was extremely unstable, especially after Data said the surrounding area would collapse once he moved the beam off of Timothy.

Runes N Raccoons

It really bothered me that they immediately put Timothy back in school, especially so that the teacher expected him to do everything the class was doing. He was the sole survivor of a disaster and lost his parents. If he wants to build a model, then let him build a model! That's actually a healthy way of grounding yourself.

Ceruleo

It's not an RPG, but there is a Tell Tale style choose your own adventure Star Trek game called Star Trek: Resurgence. It is set after DS9, but is a sequel to a TNG episode and you play the first officer of a ship. It is the best Star Trek game I have played when it comes to making decisions and facing dilemmas. The controls are a little clunky when you have to walk around and stuff, but being able to choose what my character does and the story responding is my favorite thing about RPGs so the choose your own adventure aspect may scratch the same itch.

REDR58

They have also done this before, leaving orphaned children or those separated from their parents apparently unattended, alone in their quarters. It’s very strange.

John

I hesitate to bring it up, but there was a fan-created 1st-person "game" from about a decade ago called "Stage 9." It's more of a simulation than a game, since there is no game play per se, but it was super fun and cool. Unfortunately, the CBS powers that be brought the entire weight of their legal team down on the fans who created it, despite the fact they were not selling it or making any money from it. It was a labor of love, and it was crushed by the machine.

The One True Chris

@1:00:53 -- George, do you really think RAM didn't exist when this episode was filmed?

funky weapon

I spent 18 months unable to sleep longer than 30 minutes or so at a time. I averaged maybe 90 minutes a night. it was a living hell and I do not wish it on anyone. thankfully I can sleep now for roughly 3-4 hours at a time before waking. and if I need more sleep, I can get it. but seriously - take sleep apnea seriously, people. that shit is no joke.

doe555

At least your shirt didn't say: Sniff Moonsugar

Raven Dark

I'm curious as to why you think that. I would think they'd both really like it. Then again, I've only seen one season, so I'm probably missing something.

gfixler

Simone, I've wanted to roam the Enterprise as a guest, or crew member, since the show was on! At that same time, early 90s , I was playing games like Wolfenstein, Doom, and Descent on my PC, and thinking "like this, but with that!" the closest I've seen is MineTrek, which I've mentioned a few times in comments here. It's the entire Enterprise (and many other ships) done in Minecraft, and it's massive, way more than the show ever gives the sense of. It's more like wandering a city. I would daydream about a game like those, but the entire ship, and Geordie would give me things to fix, and I'd have to access Jefferies tubes, and learn how the LCARS panels worked (Library Computer Access/Retrieval Systems; those are the fancy touch screens). Also, I can attest for George that we didn't know anything in the 80s and early 90s about other cultures in the United States. There was no internet. It's incredible how little we knew about anything. You could never say "I don't know, let's find out," and look anything up. We literally just went "I don't know," and that was it, or, we heard from someone some info, and then just repeated it forever, no way to check if any of it was correct. Everyone I knew referred to all Asians, for example, as "Orientals". I was the first person of everyone I ever knew back then to learn that wasn't cool, and brought the information back to my people, none of whom cared. It was a very different time. I do laugh at Keiko calling it the wrong thing, though, because Michael Okuda is Japanese, and he was a huge part of designing TNG (along with his nurse wife, Denise, who consulted on all the medical stuff). Michael was the one who created the LCARS graphics look, for example, among many other things. He was there, designing things, for the entire run.

Escapism day is the best day of the week.

Kieran Hawk

Nuke the telepaths from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

Michael Daw

I don't like to be this critical, but that bird or whatever it is makes it impossible to watch the "sync your own copy" version.

fforw

It's been a while since we had a "Deana gets mind raped" episode.

Cinebinge

Hi Michael, what bird are you referring to?

maria eduarda farias

hey! just thought you guys should know that the unedited version of kill bill vol 1 isn't loading on the site.

REDR58

I have to disagree about not knowing about other cultures in that time. I certainly did and I had not been outside of the US at that point. And in the 1975 movie “Three Days of the Condor” a move set largely in NYC and some surrounding areas, an American and an American-born character of Chinese descent talks about Chinese “calligraphy.”

REDR58

Also, as far as making new uniform costumes for the show, as I understand it there was not exactly a huge budget for that sort of thing. In fact, one could spot background extras wearing older versions of the uniforms from the first 2 seasons in later seasons.

gfixler

Well, America is huge. You could have been in a more cultured area. Pretty much everyone I ever knew was mostly dumb about the rest of the world outside our region. Everyone had factoids, like "Yeah, that's how they do it in Africa," and everyone else would go "Wow, that's cool." We had no way to check the veracity. Then people would just repeat that at the next gathering to other people. It feels like most of the things I ever had anyone tell me about somewhere else ended up being pure nonsense.

Fister Miyagi

Simone how do you feel about Star Trek getting an MTG set?

Michael Daw

Throughout the first episode we hear a repetitive chirping or squeaking sound on one of the mic's. It is heavily prevalent between the 11:00 and 12:00 marks in the version that does not have the sound from the episode (the "sync with your copy" version).

The Real Andrew Kim

I have recommended it before but Star Trek Online is a really well done MMORPG. Albeit the graphics are a bit dated now but if you know trek there is a lot to love. Also if you like retro games there is an old school point and click adventure game from 1995 called Star Trek TNG: A Final Unity

The Real Andrew Kim

and then there is the recent voyager game but I think Simone already knew about that one

Gavin Kinsey

Imagine getting that call from your agent, "Star Trek want you to come back and play that role again", "Cool, send me the script", "I don't think you'll need a script" ...

blerbaberpaterb

? why does birds chirping make that version impossible to watch? its not like you cant hear the sync countdown or anything...

REDR58

Oh I agree with some of that. I guess it really depends where you grew up, as you say. I grew up in the 1980s and we didn’t even have a set of encyclopedias until the 1990s. Lots of library trips back in the day. I can’t imagine not having access to all the information I have now.

REDR58

We may see him again!

s0rd3z

There is an older game Star Trek Away Team that was not bad, it's like early 00's PC though. It was more tactical RPG, Baldurs Gate style combat. I personally want basically a Persona 5 type game in the TNG universe but it's all lower decks crew. I again also cannot recommend Esoteric Ebb enough. It's honestly one of the best story driven d20 based DnD style games I have played since Disco Elysium.

Phosphorus

I'd imagine that he was implying that people would have been much less familiar with RAM in those days, thus not making it into the script: far lower proportion of people in those days had a desktop, or even looked into the specs like how much RAM it had if they bought one, as opposed to these days where you would have at least heard of the term for most people buying a smartphone even if you don't necessarily fully know what it means. So I see his point but I would also contend that people are just as computer-savvy (or not, as the case may be) these days as it was back in the early 90's.

Phosphorus

George, regarding the sleep thing: there was an article from the BBC a few years ago about medieval sleep patterns and that having 2 phases of short sleep was much more prevalent than modern people assume, that there are established terms related to this and people even get together in the time in between (in more sense than one). If this is not something you are aware of then search for the article titled "The forgotten medieval habit of two sleeps". Sometimes people assume that it's only "natural" to have one long uninterrupted sleep session and that anything else is counterproductive and stress over it. It may help you perhaps, if you naturally wake up in between, to not stress about it even if it means only getting back to sleep after a couple of hours. Two cycles of 4 hours, even with significant wakefulness in between, may be as useful as a single sessions of 8. (Or whatever sleep cycles you go through to try not to wake immediately from deep sleep.) And same for Simone, perhaps the first step is to not be too stressed that you woke up at 3:32am. I know it's difficult to fit our lives around such patterns in modern times even if that 2 phases of sleep thing turns out to be the answer, but perhaps it's still slightly easier for you to plan your day around it as you are your own bosses now, right?

ChiefKC

Simone and George tend to lean more into the comedy, sci-fi, and fantasy areas. I love their channel because of the what they like to watch. And that's not to say they don't do any horror, I just don't think its a series they would like as much. Add in the fact that there are 327 episodes, it would be one they would be watching for years. And if you only watch the first season, you really should at least finish it to season 5. There are also some great episodes after Season 5in which they get to make fun of themselves like "Fan Fiction" and "The French Mistake".

@Foodmancing

Ink brush painting isn’t calligraphy George. Shodō is ‘the way of writing’ which is the closest equivalent to calligraphy. sumi-e is ‘ink painting’. Same tools and techniques, different process and outcomes

Michael Daw

"Impossible" is an exaggeration, of course. More like "I was unable to continue because the noise was too distracting". I'm sure not everyone is affected the same.

Joe Concepts

Not so sure about that. I kind of feel like in the '90s people were even more concerned with updating their PC with new RAM for certain games, etc. But that may have been more of a gamer thing.

Joe Concepts

There's an old CD-ROM Star Trek Technical Manual from later in the series that let you explore certain parts of the ship, basically letting you move around different locations kind of like Google street view, but letting you look at certain items in characters' quarters. etc. Complete with all the ship sound effects. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nKgqiESsRU

Joe Concepts

I never rewatch Violations. I can't watch those "violation" scenes. Only thing interesting to me is that brief glimpse of Picard and Beverly in the past. Not saying it's a bad episode, but I just don't like any scenes like that.

Jomero

"Why do they keep violating Troi?" Two words: Rick Berman. An executive producer who was extremely misogynistic and the cause of a lot of friction and departures on multiple Trek series. The good news is that women characters are portrayed a lot more competently, intelligently, and strongly in Deep Space 9 (despite Berman still being a presence). But TNG had to deal with a lot of "Boys Club" mentality.

MacGuffinStuff

And that's another reason why Warf is my favorite character, just knocks the perv pos out like he's smacking a rude flying beetle out of his face.

Joel

When I was driving on the road, the dispatchers would never let a full sleep shift go without paging me on the in-cab computer every 4 hours, so to this day, I cannot sleep more than 4 hours at a time
