Mah earholes is ready! Feed me that sweet, sweet Bean Town accent!

Jeff K.

Career best performance from Renner. He’s incredible in this. Let’s take down the cathedral of Boston.

Tinfoilnation

Simone: "I need your help, I can't tell you what it is, you're gonna tell EVERYONE about it, and we're gonna watch some movies." George: (thinks for a moment) "Whose Prime account are we gonna use?"

funky weapon

Hey guys I think this Ben Affleck kid might have a future directing movies.

Potsi

This film is a hidden gem! Very entertaining with great cast specially mr renner's performance is top gun acting

jaidoru

In case anyone is wondering, they're watching the Theatrical cut, NOT the Extended cut. Thank you for the reaction! <3

Jeff K.

“Riding his Robin” - George, riding his Dick Grayson was RIGHT THERE!

Kevin

Stop guessing the plot please

blerbaberpaterb

stop watching instead of trying to change how they react/behave? cause everyone whos paid to be here likes the way they are. its not like their preference to discuss what each of them think might happen in the story is hidden on their YT cuts, so you knew thats what they like to do and still chose to pay and join.

OddThomas

Heist movies: Hell or High Water, Destroyer, Matchstick Men, Logan Lucky. For more Pete Postlethwaite: Romeo & Juliet (1996)

Samuel Jenks

Have you guys looked into getting Starlink internet service for Simone? I bet it would be more reliable and faster than her current service.

theycallmekev

This was the first movie I saw in theaters like 5 times. I remember being completely captivated by the story and the performances. Gone Baby Gone might’ve been most people’s introduction to Ben Afflecks directing, but The Town was my first and I was a fan ever since.

PastaDon

I'm born raised Somerville MA. which is 2 miles from Charlestown.. and while the story is a fabrication, they are inspired from real life events that took place in the early 90's with the McLaughlin crew out of Charlestown.. associates of James Bulger and Stephen Flemmi. I was somewhere between 10 - 13 years old when this stuff was going down back in the day..

Scott CineRam

I'm curious if you're planning to react to any of the Zack Snyder DC Comics movies. The one you mentioned is "Batman v Superman" which is a sequel to "Man of Steel". The series is usually called the DCEU, you should be able to learn all the films in the series by checking the wikipedia page. Some of them are...less than great.

Michael T.

"Why would a stadium have so much cash?" They explained it but you guys were too busy talking about romcoms and Danny Devito to hear it 😂

Jeff K.

Just in to say that I watched the Sox win the World Series in 2004 at a bar in Somerville. Good times.

PastaDon

My Guy 😉 I remember the next day a lot of people took the front page of the Herald titled "Top of the world" brought it and laid it on their grandparents grave sites

Brian

This was way before places moved to cashless systems. It was a Monday after a 4 game weekend series with the Yankees which is a big event every time those two teams play. That place was going to be loaded

Jeff K.

Looking at pictures, I think it was Olde Magoun's Saloon. I lived in New Bedford for a year but had friends in the city so I'd drive to Quincy and hop on the T to visit and go out drinking with them all the time. The parade was next-level that year, since it coincided with Halloween.

OddThomas

I think sad Affleck meme was more to do with his personal life than his Batman. I thought he was a good Batman. Not the best, but good.

The Film Effect

“If we get jammed up, we’re holding court on the street.”

Matt O'Keefe

Simone, Danny Devito and Rhea Pearlman were married for 30 years but sadly, divorced 14 years ago.

Jeff K.

For Postlethwaite, I always gotta recommend In the Name of the Father. Phenomenal movie with multiple incredible performances, including Pete and DDL obviously.

streaky

Would have been a few years after The Departed, Mark Wahlberg in that was probably why he wanted him. I do think ultimately Renner is the better casting choice, but you can see what he was thinking. Walberg doesn't necessarily always pick the best roles for himself but I think that could have worked.. I can see it, put it that way. First cuts of movies are always extremely long, it's not that unusual - the ones where the trivia doesn't say it will be too.

PastaDon

New Bedford and Fall River a.k.a the portagees "português" capital of the world 🤣

PastaDon

Jesus I forgot just how bad the theatrical cut is compared to the extended cut..

newhastings

If you ever wanna see the florist (Pete Postlethwaite) in a complete opposite role i think you’ll be floored by him in In the Name of The Father, with powerhouse performances from DDL and Emma Thompson to boot

Jeff K.

They're not actually divorced; they separated and are still legally married and say that they're still best friends, they just no longer live together. So at least they've still got a very healthy friendship that's lasted.

PastaDon

Matchstick Men; most underrated story..

Matt O'Keefe

Ok. I think I knew or heard that already, but glad you clarified that.

Fister Miyagi

George have you heard of a Chinese anime called The All Devouring Whale? Would love to see if you were interested in a reaction for that.

o.b

I usually cringe at George's puns, but Afflecktation made it all worth it. Bravo!

theycallmekev

If that’s his opinion, let them have an opinion. If you don’t agree with it then so be it, your opposition won’t fuel their intentions as much as his opinion won’t fuel yours. It wasn’t malicious or with ill intent, instead it was just a suggestion. Like you said, we all paid for this patreon subscription, so we all get to say what we feel WITHOUT JUDGEMENT, regardless if it’s not what you agree with (or if you do).

blerbaberpaterb

nah, what he said isnt opinion. thats not him saying "i personally prefer x over y or i prefer if you do a instead of b" thats just them telling them to change the way they behave/talk, something that many people actually like. so what hes asking is actually affecting what i paid for. imagine if i tell them to "stop reading names of people who paid highest tier", or how about "stop making those photoshopped thumbnails" or "stop saying what you dont like and only say what you do like". thats not me sharing my opinion, thats me trying to change shit that affects what other people enjoy.

blerbaberpaterb

also, no ones entitled to zero reprisal for what they say in public. everyone gets to share their opinion, no ones immune to being told their opinion sucks or is wrong. you get to tell me you dont agree with what i said, and thats fine, im would never stop you from telling me that because im not above criticism or reprisal. any more than he is. the freedom to share your opinion goes both ways; you get to say what you want, and everyone else gets to say what they want to what you said.

Carlos H

Bullet proof vests don't stop assault rifle rounds. The average law enforcement vest is meant to protect from handgun rounds. even if the armor plates stopped the assault rifle round, the force would cause severe internal damage.

OddThomas

In answer to your question for bad titles I nominate The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. GREAT film, but why spoil the entire story right off the bat with that title? Maybe it's because they assume people know the history already, but I'm guessing most people who watched the film didn't.

OddThomas

I would quantify that by saying the first ten minutes of a film are info dumps and when reactors are making guesses during that first act, it often means they are theorising right when something is actually being explained & so they may miss it.

theycallmekev

You’re acting like feedback and censorship are the same thing, and they aren’t. “Kevin” made a suggestion because he thinks constant plot theorizing takes away from the reaction. They’re free to disagree, ignore it, or keep doing exactly what they’re doing…that’s how feedback works. If people can praise something they like, they can also respectfully say what they don’t like. Just because you disagree with his opinion doesn’t make it invalid. By your own logic, you could’ve simply ignored his comment instead of telling him to stop watching.

blerbaberpaterb

are you him? you sound like one of those people with 2 accounts so you can come to your own defense. of course theyre free to disagree or ignore, and i hope they do. but if he gets to voice what he wants changed, then i get to voice back what i like about what S&G does, so that they know its not a universal opinion. whats it to you anyways? why do you care so much that i dont agree with him? and to take your words then, you can simply ignore MY comment instead of jumping into a conversation that never concerned you in the first place. unless you happen to have 2 accounts.

blerbaberpaterb

if he gets to share what he doenst like and wants changed, then i for damn sure gets to tell him why i disagree and that i believe his opinion is wrong. what i dont get is why is this any of your business or affect you in anyway. more to that, if i or anyone else dont jump in and vocalize that we dont agree with what he said, then S&G will not know there are those who disagree. and may change how they do things accordingly. recent example being a few episodes of Stranger Things. a bunch of toxic fans told them to stop being negative, so they just stopped talking until people came in and said "no we dont all think that, please keep doing what youre doing" so yeah, for every negative opinion, everyone else gets to also disagree. i have no idea why you have such a problem with that.

Andrew

You can skip the intro if you want to. I do sometimes.

theycallmekev

Nope, I’m not “Kevin.” We just happen to have the same name. I’m not paying for a second Patreon just to argue with myself in the comments. I just happen to agree with his take. You have every right to disagree with him, just like he had every right to leave feedback. The only thing I was pushing back on was the idea that suggesting a change is somehow different from expressing an opinion. It’s still feedback, and the creators are free to ignore it if they want. I just felt your response came across a bit dismissive, and I didn’t think it was fair to tell someone to “stop watching” simply because they shared respectful (they did say “please”) feedback. I don’t know “Kevin”…I just believe everyone here should be able to share their thoughts without being made to feel like their opinion isn’t welcome. That’s really all I was trying to say.

Andrew

Mark Wahlberg probably would have been very good in the Renner role. Mark is from Boston and he was arrested several times for violet offenses as a youth so he basically was that guy when he was younger.

Stephanie

I'm pretty sure she donated the money anonymously, so there wouldn't be any questions. 😉

Kenneth thomas

Nice saturday treat. Fantastic movie

Jeff K.

Let’s be fully transparent about his youthful transgressions: they were all incredibly racist attacks. Dude nearly killed a Vietnamese man and used to chase Black kids around throwing rocks at them.

Jeff K.

One of my college roommates was from Boston and he always had an accent, but it was so funny any time his hometown buddies came to visit because it got amped up to like 200% and it felt like being in the middle of Good Will Hunting. Matt and Ben get that way from time to time in interviews when they start talking about growing up in Boston and I love it.

Tyler Foster

For my money, it's also not the Extended Cut that is superior. My favored cut is the slightly overlooked third cut, released on a couple of less-common Blu-rays after the disc with the theatrical and extended cuts had already come out and was hugely popular. The cut is the extended cut, but it also features an alternate ending that I think works much better than the ending on the theatrical and extended cuts.

E G

Well that's a silly request, you can't ask people to turn off their brain. If the plot is predictable it's not the viewers fault.

Jonathan Eaton

For more Pete Postlethwaite, 'In The Name Of The Father' 1993

photos_by_geoff

Been wanting to watch this with you both for a while! I just finished and I am late getting to a gig, but well worth it. Couldn't stop in the middle or hold off. LOL... Thanks for watching it and for reacting you two! Enjoy the rest of your weekends!

John

I would add Den of Thieves

John

The actor who plays Big Mac's Father is great in October Sky a movie I would recommend

Jonathan Eaton

Bad movie title: 'Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot'

simo

I love love LOOOVE that Boston is a character in itself in the movie, it looks like every character is stuck in this purgatory and can't seem to elevate their condition from the city itself, also i love how the line between good and evil is so thin, at times Hamm's character is even worse than the robbers themselves. Great great movie.

Stanley Etienne

FYI Mark Wahlberg was in the film The Departed and received an Oscar nomination for his performance.

Dustin Duvall

Hurt locker for Renner and Instant Family for Marky Mark

Jay Davis

My brother and I had to try and affect the accent when we were kids and left the Midwest to spend summers with dad in Providence or we got teased and bullied mercilessly as hicks. I have fond memories of that, for some reason.

Raven Blackrose

Loved the movie and the reaction, few things. The stadium just had a huge event, and in 2010ish, boston, yeah lotta cash spent on booze especially. Some stadiums have one central cash storage for all their own vendors. I like the title. Especially because it was about this miserable piece of town. If it was like "Charlestown Heat" or "Last Chance" or something like that, would be lamer.

mcfierce24

The guy that Jon Hamm's character gave the note to was Claire's lawyer. 😉

HipsterImposter

Another Affleck directed movie to check out is Gone Baby Gone. Also would like to throw in a Jonny Depp movie, Blow for future consideration.

CouchCheese

Hmmm, shame you guys watched the inferior cut. No way you could've known though. And it's the way most of us experienced it back in 2010. But maybe revisit the other cut(s) on your own time. It's well worth it.

CouchCheese

It's interesting how different your comment was received compared to that one comment on the Obsession post wishing that S&G didn't try to guess movie details/plot from the poster in the pre-reaction bit. It got 28 likes and you get a big argument lol. I guess it comes down to delivery.

Cc Decc

You would think, but 15 years later and its been disappointment. After such a hot start with Gone Baby Gone, The Town, and Argo, old Hollywood kind of died and became nothing but superheroes and sequels. Soon Ben was back to playing dudes in capes and marrying Jennifer Lopez again, and people were making fun of him all over again. He did a movie about the rise of Nike that I never saw, but its only now later this year that he got the old gang back together and is going to be releasing a new crime thriller type thing. Been a long time. Hope it doesn't suck and that there is an audience for it.

Rev

I wonder why Boogie Nights is the only movie Simone could think of that has Mark Wahlberg in it... hmmm..... what could it be that makes THAT movie stand out to her so much? hmmm....

Cc Decc

Only if he's giving me a chunk of his money. Or a reliable Starlink hookup.

CouchCheese

The reactor's curse: talking over dialogue. I call it karmic justice for making a snide comment about Danny Devito's looks.

BPace

Ben spoke with someone that used to rob trucks and that's who told him about the cop looking the other way. The head tilt made that scene for sure.

CouchCheese

He doesn't have a dick so you'll have to be the giver in that transaction. Good luck.

Cc Decc

Kevin James' caterpillar? That can only mean its time for the channel to watch Paul Blart: Mall Cop (2009).

Daniel Bjork

Baltimore definitely has more crime than Boston

paul rai

Definitely watch Ben Affleck’s directed film, Gone Baby Gone (he made this before The Town). Another complex morally grey crime procedural that’ll leave you with a big dramatic ending that’ll provoke fascinating conversations. Also has an amazing cast of Casey Affleck, Ed Harris, and Amy Ryan (who gives an incredible performance).

Dan

I have trouble having sympathy for Affleck's character or anyone on their robbery crew. Even in the best case they're traumatising a load of innocent people and in practice they keep spraying unaimed automatic rifle fire in built-up areas endangering not only the police but all sorts of bystanders (potentially those unseen a long distance away on the other side of windows, etc). And while that's mostly Renner's character Affleck's character knows what he's like. Not exactly Ocean's Eleven. Duress codes on vaults are a thing, and they mention that (they establish that they already know the time lock unlocking time and then threaten her not to enter the duress code). Though IRL they're more on obviously electronic locks.

FranciscoGios

I knew you guys were gonna liked this movie because we love a good heists robbery after HEAT, am I right!!?

Collinson

Does anyone know what the squishy toy thing Simone uses?

BellaBlue

Yep..and Kev could have phrased it better but I happen to agree with him. It does take away from the reaction. It isn't a contest...wonder if it will be this or this or this..and often that does lead to talking over important info. the pushback about "well then don't watch"is also nonsense because you can still enjoy other parts of the reaction..but the constant guessing does take enjoyment from it imo which doesn't mean it has to be everyone's opinion. Then you get the.."I knew it" when someone is right about something but sure..if you guessed 20 things...one might be correct. ha

REDR58

My biggest problem with the movie, aside from all the stuff you mentioned, is that Doug is not doing Claire ANY good by trying to get her to meet him, let alone to still be in contact with her. If he truly loves her, he really needs to stay out of her life. She even starts out saying "why did you do this to me?" after shit goes down and I was really hoping she would completely reject him, but alas, no. he still could have left the money for her as he did in the movie.

REDR58

I've only seen the theatrical version tonight here for the first time, but the extended version seems readily available on all of the North American disc releases (of which I have the 4K/Blu-ray set) and digital releases.

REDR58

How do you figure Frawley (Hamm) is worse than the robbers? I don't see that *at all.*

REDR58

That's Chris Cooper.

REDR58

I can't see how she could possibly do it any other way.

REDR58

Nor do car doors.

REDR58

Affleck was the least of the issues with that era of DC movies. He was fine.

REDR58

Dino is played by Titus Welliver who you saw in "Argo" before this. The hard drives they threw in the microwave during the first robbery were from the bank's security cameras. Pete Postlethwaite played the big game hunter Roland Tembo in "The Lost World" who was determined to kill a T-Rex. He then refused to work with InGen at their dinosaur park in San Diego. The actor also appeared in "Alien3." "The Town" was the second-to-last movie he worked on and he died in 2011 from cancer. English actor Rebecca Hall has an excellent, generic East Coast American accent here. After Frawley tells Dino to close the bridge, we see 2 police cars, one after another. The second police car's hood appears to be loosely closed as it keeps popping open slightly. So you have seen Fenway Park here, at the climactic scene, before in: "Field of Dreams" when Ray takes Terrence Mann to see a ballgame where they both hear the "Go the distance" message: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yxzq9BLE5Hg "Moneyball" where Billy gets the job offer from the Boston Red Sox: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9LJJF6LsDQ "Ted" where Ted is apparently killed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23SmxskLuEU "Spotlight" where some of the reporters attend a game at seen around 42:48 here: https://cinebingers.ca/wCxfnDGUF4 I think you missed it, but in the end credits there is a dedication: "Charlestown's reputation as a breeding ground for armed robbers is authentic. However, this film all but ignores the great majority of the residents of Charlestown, past and present, who are the same good and true people found most anywhere" George you asked about Coughlin (Renner) and his gun at the big ending shootout when he appeared to fire many rounds. The Intratec TEC-9 machine pistol/submachinegun that he uses has a pair of magazines taped together such that he can remove one empty magazine, flip the taped pair over and insert the second, full magazine. That particular weapon seems to be able to accommodate magazines in various sizes, from 10-, 20-, 32-, 36- and 50-round magazines. It’s not entirely clear what capacity round magazines Coughlin is using, but I would guess a par of the 32/36 round magazines. Coughlin runs through the first mag while firing at/chasing Frawley around the police car and then reloads as he is running away from Frawley. He then shoots at some other police and appears to reloads again with another (?) pair of taped-together magazines: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTH8tmmPn-w

REDR58

For quite a different sort of movie about thieves, check out "Harry in Your Pocket" (1973) with James Coburn, who you saw in "The Great Escape" as Sedgwick "The Manufacturer" one of the few men to escape (seen here on the bicycle and later meeting with the French Resistance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzLFZ7iCyUU) and who voiced Henry J. Waternoose III min "Monster's Inc."

乔治在镜头前放屁。据说!

Worst movie titles? That's an easy one. There are so many to choose from! Here are my personal top three: 1. John Carter 2. Zyzzyx Road 2. Zzyzx 3. Leonard Part 6 John Carter had what may have been the worst marketing campaign in Hollywood history. The film is based on -A Princess of Mars-, the first novel in Edgar Rice Burroughs' magnificent Barsoom series, one of the foundational works of modern science fiction. The marketing campaign seemed to assume audiences would instantly recognize the (quite generic) name John Carter, even though the first novel had been published a century earlier. It did little to explain who John Carter was, why audiences should care about him, or that the film was based on a classic science-fiction series or what the actual plot of the film even is. That's a real shame, because talented people made a genuinely solid movie. (It certainly isn't perfect, especially given its enormous budget of ~$300 million, but still...) With a more descriptive title (A Princess of Mars would have been an obvious choice) and better marketing, it might have become a blockbuster, even in the science fiction–heavy year of 2012. Instead, audiences largely stayed away, Disney lost money, and the planned sequels were canceled. Zzyzx and Zyzzyx Road tie for second place because they're both thrillers, both were released in February 2006, and both have equally awful titles. I can't pronounce either title, and I have no idea what either of them is supposed to mean, so I've never watched them. Leonard Part 6 is a 1980s spy-movie parody. I first heard about it when it came out on DVD in 2005. By then, I already knew it had a reputation as one of the worst Hollywood movies ever made, which naturally piqued my curiosity. However, I wanted to watch at least Part 1 first. After an extensive search, I discovered that Parts 1 through 5 simply didn't exist. I was so annoyed by the joke that I never bought the DVD. My friends can make jokes at my expense, but Bill Cosby certainly can't.

Victor Fiegel

Gone Baby Gone is my favorite movie directed by Ben Affleck. I really think you guys should check it out!

Michael T.

Danny Devito is an adonis

Jeff K.

Totally agree. He was a very servicable Batman.

Jeff K.

The Nike movie (Air) was legitimately fantastic. I know that Ben has been a bit of a punchline for a long time, and I know, he's a multi, multi, MULTI-millionaire so I'm sure he's not sweating it, but it's a bummer because the dude is ULTRA talented. He's won an Oscar for a script he wrote, he's won an Oscar for Best Picture for a movie he directed and starred in, he's been in some truly excellent films for 30+ years, but he's still the butt of so many damn jokes. And what makes it sad is that some of those jokes revolve around his addiction history, which is just not OK. (Obviously, the Gigli and J-Lo of it all is the other big one, but the amount of shit I've seen talked about him because he had a drinking problem is wild.)

Jeff K.

Hell yes to October Sky. Absolutely fantastic movie. Probably my favorite Chris Cooper performance.

Jeff K.

Regarding John Carter: not sure if you're a podcast listener at all, but there's a fantastic movie podcast called Blank Check that just covered John Carter a couple weeks ago. Well worth a listen. I've never seen the film but hearing them go through the production and whatnot in tremendous detail was genuinely fascinating.

Jeff K.

CouchCheese, you might be a disgusting concept when I break down your user name, but I like the cut of your jib.

Jeff K.

And a fun fact about Fenway being in Field of Dreams: two of the extras at Fenway for that scene (they do not appear in the film) are a young Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.

Ari Ramirez

Affleck was a pretty good Batman! Unfortunately that character is stuck in some terrible movies.

Sailingcats420

Guys... you have any idea how many 20$ beers a baseball stadium sells during a game??? Or hotdogs or all the food and merchandise lol clearly neither of you have ever been to a sports game which is kinda nuts. Lol

Ste Rawlings

Gone Baby Gone was Affleck's first directy thing and it is excellent

Kevin Cormier

One little hat tip for the locals (I'm born and raised in Massachusetts) is that Go Fuck Yourself (often shortened to GFY) is also used as a term of endearment. So that being the pivotal phrase is a little funnier to us.

dys

To the question of whether Baltimore or Boston has more crime, unfortunately it is Baltimore by far. It may even be true that Boston is or was the "bank robbery capital of America" but it just hasn't ever been a city in decline the way Baltimore has been for decades, it's the capital of one of the wealthiest states in the country, a center of multiple industries like biotech. Baltimore has 5-10 times as many murders per year with a smaller population.

Philipp Roensch

Yeah I love when Ben Afleck writes and directs, maybe more than his acting^^. This one is really well done, all the proper planing cannot account for the human heart throwing wrenches. Together with the strong Boston local flavor, this movie does not fuck around. RIP Pete Postlethwaite, he died not a year after this one. You might remember him has the rich father in Inception? How they prepare is quite realistic. The best getaway car would be unassuming, but be tuned under the hood. I love how this one escalates. If you like robbery stories, Lucky Logan, Hell or High Water and Wrath of Man are hopefully already are on your list :).

Philipp Roensch

The worst movie titles are of course local translations, here in Germany the audience is though of so lowly by publishers that we get only the dumbest taglines. They are equal parts insulting movie descriptions and missed topic, it is baffling. Example: The Town – Stadt ohne Gnade (City without mercy) Just in case you don't know what 'town' means and somewhow mercy is a supposed subtheme???
