Hunger Games Catching Fire please. George the second movie on doesn't have shaky camera it's only the first one thats bad

newhastings

Fun fact: the director kane parsons got his start making AOT fan videos. Do not watch them until you’re well into season 4 though but its really insane considering he was 14/15 making them

Garth Mindfeather

i haven't seen this movie yet, but wow -- those "shpongle" eyes! (UK psychedelic world-music band that use a 6-eyed mask as their mascot or visual call-sign). great job on the photoshop (or GIMP?) as always. serious fun skills. rock on, y'all.

Andrew

Simone has always talked like she was from the 50's. JEEPERS! NIFTY!

Tom B

It’s like describing cinebinge to someone who’s never seen one and asking them to draw it

Michael

Those blue commercial payment/phone # screens would typically be on screen longer (often with a narrator repeating the number multiple times "Call ###! That's: ###!!!" etc.) than is often shown in media depicting them! Still a bit quick if you didn't have pen and paper at hand but they also played them often and there was much more of a monoculture so a lot of eyes were on those repeat viewings.

I AM A FUCKING ARCHITECT

Kane Parsons blah blah blah only 20 years old blah blah blah box of scraps blah blah blah. I really like this movie. a lot. but it has flaws. It feels like three separate stories with three separate themes stitched together. the highlight of the movie is easily the found footage stuff that gives off massive Navidson Record vibes. the scares are great. the concept is great. it just feels like the writer couldn't pick a lane and stick with it. I think if they focused on any of the three narratives wholly, it would've made for a more satisfying film. the biggest negative is easily the stalker. that is the goofiest thing I've ever seen and I do not know how anyone can take it seriously. when I first watched this movie I wound up facepalming, laughing at just how absurdly stupid it is. Overall I think it's a solid B. I do want to see what Kane does next.

Garin

Man, as a person with a Scottish name that is like 90% vowels and having had teachers give me nicknames that were easier for them to say, I really like that little moment at the beginning of Simone saying Chiwetel Ejiofor's name a couple times to try to get the pronunciation right

Matrim

The reason humans are inclined to make noise when we suspect something is watching us is because most of the things that hunted humans were ambush predators, and they are disincentivized to attack aware prey. Also that route does map out.

Jose Robles

I say it before, this is not an horror.... but the movie is good. The game may be, but I dont see this movie as horror

Jedi Lounger

The designs and environments in this movie really remind me of the game Control from Remedy. Both take inspiration from the idea of liminal spaces, and the crazier areas of that game really seem to lean into the same concepts explored in the movie and some of the videos on Parson's YouTube channel. Edit: Also I have watched this movie with several people now and no one really seems to find the name of Clark's store funny. I thought Ottoman Empire was absolute genius lol.

newhastings

If he gets a guy with actual writing credits and not just four random episodes of tv he can do some amazing stuff. Having this sort of vision at 21 is unreal

Els

OK, here's a fun thing to do. Next time you go to the movie theater, do not leave by the normal exit. Instead take one of the alternate safety exits at the front (or sometimes the back) of the theater. Usually it will lead to a Backrooms-style labyrinth of blank corridors which ultimately deposits you in the parking lot or some other bizarre location. I've been with people who get genuinely freaked out. On the other hand you guys probably haven't set foot in a movie theater in years.

maikeru

The end credits were annoying. Not because I don't like end credits in general or the music and it wasn't super loud but I kinda had to concentrate to hear your discussion. Great film and great reaction though. (I'm totally fine to leave the end credits like for a minute or two but as soon the credits start rolling upwards, there is usually no need to play it to the end, unless there are cool/cute animations, pics or whatever during the end credits or there is an additional scene at the very end).

blerbaberpaterb

i have a feeling they just forgot to cut it out like they do with every movie/show.

Spacedone

George: "Neeeew Achiiievement!" Me (feeling pleased with myself): "I understood that reference."

Jamie

What the fuck do you see it as?

Monica Alarcon

Here's hoping we'll see a Forget Me Not Annie movie directed by George and starting Simone... Or the other way around?... Anyways recommendations after watching this: the V/H/S movies. The next one is actually V/H/S:SCP... Also the tv show Shrinking. This movie reminded me of it for some reason...

Brandon

I don't understand why the "20 years old" thing has to be brought up constantly. Seasoned directors twice or even three times that age still make flawed movies all the time. I feel like it's just because 20 is young to make a name for yourself in the film business, even though it happens in something like the music business all the time.

Logan Nelson

Took me 3 viewings to get through it without falling asleep... I don't understand the hype...

Milosz Skowronski

I believe those recordings in many languages are the same as the ones we put on the golden records attached to the Voyager spacecrafts. They're just greetings in various human languages. I caught the one in Polish, which is "witajcie istoty z zaświatów" which means "welcome, beings from beyond our world". I remember that's the one we put on the Voyager golden records.

Tarmo Knuutinen

Absolutely loved this movie despite going in with low expectations. Goddamn that last shot is haunting.

Ashley Mundt

The original backrooms image was taken about 30 minutes from where I live! It was taken in Oshkosh, Wisconsin

Andrew

I grew up watching Scooby Doo too. The original one from the 70s. I've never heard her say Jinkies! 😂

Alina

Highly recommend checking out Sentimental Value (2025) for more Renate Reinsve (the therapist) and Stellan Skarsgard!

JHaze

Maybe I’m an idiot and that’s the joke Simone was making but Phil’s actor is called Mark

Jose Robles

Thriller? not sure, it was unsettling, as I say maybe because I did not play the game, but does not mean I did not like this movie, I like it, just not sure why is catalog as horror.

KnittingHaven

Yes! another vote for continuing the Hunger Games, especially with a new movie coming out in November.

Tcrimson05T

I like to think that the reason actual Captain Clark decided to do that is because he finally accepted that he was somebody that hurt people. But they are lots of shorts and videos and video games around this concept. The places are called "liminal spaces". And there are liminal spaces in real life. And they are uncomfortable places to be in. They are kind of like places that used to have human life but are devoid of it now and because of that something feels wrong.

Ashton Lewis

A few suggestions for some Horror to add to the list :) Evil Dead 2013 The Autopsy of Jane Doe Men Incantation Sleepy Hollow Where Evil Lurks The Woman In Black The Hills Have Eyes 2006 The Rite The Last House on The Left Slither Vacancy The Ritual Pet Semetary Sinister The Wailing Hush As Above So Below And to chuck some shows in the mix - The rest of Mike Flanagan's shows, and The Terror

Brandon

This and Obsession were the two major breakout indie films this year. I'm pretty sure they're both still playing in theaters in some places despite being available for home viewing now. IMO between the two, Obsession was so much better. This one just didn't hold my attention the same way at all. I started watching it this morning when the reaction went up, and took two extended breaks throughout the movie do get some stuff done around the house. So I just finished the movie now, seven hours later. Still, I don't dislike the movie and actually liked the premise a LOT. I'm still very curious to see what Kane Parsons does next. It's a personal preference, but the look itself of old and low quality video footage doesn't creep me out. It's been an aesthetic tool that's been used in horror since HD video started becoming the norm (maybe even longer than that). So much so that a lot of horror games have optional CRT/VHS filters that just don't work for me. Silent Hill 2 is disturbing enough without it, thank you very much.

Stilge

I saw this in the cinema at the very front row. I had a sore neck, but the slanted screen added to the surreal experience in a good way.

Matthew Johnson

If you like the lead actress Renate Reinsve you should definitely watch THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD

Jon

And I've finally seen a thumbnail and disturbs me

REDR58

I hate to be the one to spell it out, but yeah, "Ottoman" as in the piece of furniture...

REDR58

Dr. Mary Kline, the therapist, is played by Norwegian actor Renate Reinsve which explains her accent, but doesn’t explain why that character has the accent. Her mother is played by Finnish actor Krista Kosonen whose accent is less noticeable. Clark is using a table leg for his peg leg when making the commercial in the store. Bobby was wearing the “End Apartheid” shirt (that he later found in the Backrooms) in this same scene. The weird sci-fi movie that Clark was watching is "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians (1964)” which I have seen (thanks MST3K!) and you can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4SZyeUGSM4 A ship’s wheel is called the "ship's wheel," George. The "helm" is the position. When Clark is driving around after leaving the store at night, the radio in his car shows "FM" and "TAPE" on his car's radio head unit faceplate screen at the same time. That should not be possible. From IMDB: “The foreign voices playing over the scene of Clark entering the Backrooms in the trailer are sourced directly from the Voyager 2 record, with the specific excerpt welcoming travelers to the planet. This not only mirrors Clark's situation, but alludes to the thread of government oversight, which permeates the web series.” After the researcher guy made popcorn and then came into the TV room where his family was watching TV, they were watching “The NeverEnding Sgtory.” That was Bastian screaming “Don’t die!” I guess you guys didn’t recognize it. The movie was filmed in Vancouver.

REDR58

First, they should watch "Reprise" (2006) and "Oslo, August 31st" (2011) before "The Worst Person in the World" (2021) as they are all part of director Joachim Trier's "Oslo" trilogy.

Angzarr

Biblically Accurate Simone?

CommanderBrownCoat

intro blurb "AI came up with this for me" and then actually have ai come up with some lol

ZachBrickowski

You guys should definitely check out Kane’s Backrooms series on your own time when you get the chance. It’s set in the same continuity as this movie.

funky weapon

@Brandon I think it's because 20 year old directors just don't really happen in movies. usually you work your way up to that position, learning different aspects of film production as you go. the fact that Kane had such a great idea and a body of work on youtube to act as a proof of concept meant he got to skip the line four or six years early. In music, A&R reps prey on the naivety of the young. much easier to control and fleece.

dasgrove

Fun to see a great blind reaction. Also, MONGO IS APPALLED!!

ZugZugDarbDarb

Almost watched this yesterday, now I can just watch it with y'all.

Jayson Phillips

Luminal spaces , seeing places that don't seem right like an empty Mall or Airport, makes you feel uncomfortable.

Dan

*Liminal :)

Matt Dellarosa

Lol, youre doing great Simone. I love your openings, they crack me up every time. Im not a fan of horror but I do love wierd, mind bending movies and tv shows. I've actually played Escape the Backrooms, long before this movie came out. Its super hard, I actually couldnt finish it. In the game when you see someone with a biohazard suit you have to hide from them because if they see you they'll turn into a monster and kill you. You also have to navigate over deep chasms on narrow walkways, i think that's where I got stuck. Super creepy game just like the movie. As far as the ending goes im pretty sure he was consumed by his own mental traps when he realized he wasnt willing to change and that's why the pirate turned on him. Thats just my take though. Would love a sequel to this one.

Jamie

I found it horrific. Which is subjective, tbf. What pushes a movie in the horror genre for you?

zona999

Fantastic horror film that has the same deeply unsettling creep factor as this film is "Under The Skin", staring Scarlett Johansson.

CouchCheese

My two cents regarding difficult names as someone who has a difficult real name: you should just try to say it correctly and not waffle about how difficult it is, especially if you've come across that person/name before. I'm just generally speaking but the continuing of not doing a real attempt without falling back on unserious joking just perpetuates the "otherness" of certain ethnicities/culture who didn't have the luxury of assimilating and gaining a name that is more familiar to natives in the place they live. Just try. Sorry if this got too serious, I'm gonna go back to my Sears store basement now.

REDR58

“Vivarium” (2019) is another psychological horror type film that came to mind when watching this. It stars Jesse Eisenberg and Imogen Poots. Check it out.

Elijah

The guy that plays pirate Clark is the same guy that played the human alien hybrid in the end of Alien Romulous. His name is Robert Bobroczkyi and he's 7 foot 7 in real life. I really hope he keeps doing these roles because he's really good at them.

Raven Blackrose

Agreed. Just try, it's than doing a whole bit about how crazy the name is like a lot youtubers do.

Raven Blackrose

There's a bunch of different verions with lore, most of which are bad. A lot of cheap cash in games use that terrible convoluted lore with a billion layers of black hole spider monsters, and twelve government agencies. Kane Parson's is the simplest version, and primarily a metaphor for mental health, being trapped in downward spirals on psychosis and depression. I agree that accepting he's just a bad person set his other half free to hurt people at will

Jose Robles

I think is how we see the concept of the backrooms , I see it more like the matrix, very bugged matrix’s. I think George say something similar the dev island or something. Horror or scary movies are not really my thing since I got nightmares easily but let see, Event Horizon, The Exorcist, as a kid I made the mistake of watch The Blob on my own (the 80s) version. Some stories from Tales of the crypt I want to watch The Babadock and The VVitch

RumHamEnjoyer

I've seen that picture many times but never knew it's origins! Very cool. Also, it's nice to see a fellow Wisconsinite in here 🧀

blerbaberpaterb

its kinda amazing how you take what is clearly a person insecure and not confident about their pronunciation of a name due to English being their second language, and turned it into an accusation of prejudice. like at no point did either of them make a joke, clearly he was self conscious about his pronunciation and didnt wanna butcher peoples names. wtf kinda mental gymnastic even is this.

Shawn B

I used to be an architect like you Then I took a coat rack in the peg leg.

Jayson Phillips

Ty My spellcheck wasn't working on that word

Mike Jenson

I was waiting for aliens to show up because the greetings in all the different languages and children of planet earth is on the record that was attached to the Voyager space craft.

Carl Noraas

Can I recommend 'The Drama'? It's a new film and great for reactions. Very tense, awkward, and funny. Highly recommend.

Phil

Interesting sets, and that's all this film has to offer. For the first half, it tries building tension that keeps falling flat and dying. Then it happens all over again, but this time with the psychiatrist. Who needs a gripping plot and a decent climax in a movie anyway... Time to watch The Room as a palate cleanser.

michael denny

God i hope the show turns out good.

Josip Buretić

Yes it was very weird movie. The beginning was a little bit interesting but then it just became weird and I don't know how to feel about it. And I never played any of the backroom games maybe that is the reason because I didn't like it so much

Adrian

Backrooms is not a god movie and a major disappointment. Sorry.

CouchCheese

I did not accuse anyone of prejudice and understand that what is happening is not something most people do consciously. I didn't even point out any person by name to be polite but okay since you made that jump I'll meet you where you stand: I don't care what someone's native language is. English isn't mine either. But if I were someone with a platform who puts themselves on video, steam, etc, and have encountered someone's name before, I am going to try earnestly to get it right, either by prepping beforehand or making a good show of it while on air. I commend people who actively try to communicate ideas and concepts especially to a bunch of strangers online, especially when they are communicating in a language that isn't their first. BUT, I also notice repeat patterns and lackluster attempts to not extend certain respects to other cultures. At the end of it, this is their job. Much like when actors in a movie attempt to speak a a different language and mangle the pronunciation, we judge them, do we not? And Cinebinge judges them too? No? Am I wrong? If you want to take what I said originally as an accusation of prejudice, that's on you. I don't know what else to say.

REDR58

S&G covered this in the trivia discussion.

Maidudude

Clark is stuck in his ways and the pirate version is a representation of his own mindlessness when it comes to anger and addiction. It’s the physical version of the disguise and the performance of clark as “captain clark”. Once he decides he doesn’t want to change and he wants to stay the way he is, he is devoured by his own worst impulses. The backrooms are a representation of trying to map out your own psyche but with the faults of memory and the inability to understand your own brains complexity. People get obsessed with trying to figure themselves out and can get lost in it. At the end, the therapist I think has kind of figured all this out, and sees herself in Phil’s obsession in trying to understand the backrooms. The movie opens with her trying to figure out Clark’s mental health and end with her being in Clark’s position and Phil being in hers. Basically the brain is a layered maze clouded by faulty memories and if you can’t figure out how to get yourself out you risk yourself and those around you.

michael denny

This movie really falls apart at the end I see what they were going for, but they miss the mark. Undisputed creepy slow collapse into despair and existential fear still belongs to the Shining. This movie may mean more to younger people but it clearly wasn't made for me, but im glad other people like it.

Andreas Buehler

With you there. This just does nothing for me. There's like three neat weird things with the set design, but most of the rest is just uninteresting shaky cam chases.

Lanny Stanfield

Fun fact: The tallest basketball player ever is from Canada. His name is Oliver Rioux, and he's 7'9".

BellaBlue

I believe Captain Clark kills Clark at that moment because that was the first time Clark faced (or was forced to face by Mary) that he was not the eternal victim but that he was the violent and destructive one. Captain Clark mirrors the actual Clark in his feelings of self and at that moment Mary forced him to own up and realize he is the destructive and violent one which then mirrored to Captain Clark who at that moment destroyed Clark in a violent way

Twiska Brand

I think the captain turned on him because he was going to let her go, but the captain still saw her as the stand in for his ex wife.

Twiska Brand

Honestly, I think this film isn't as good as most people make it out to be. It's not a bad film, and for horror it is genuinely above average. So a really good start for Kane Pixels, but it's clearly the weakest of the three "YouTuber Movies." Obsession is the best, then it's iron lung and finally this.

John

In season one of True Detective, people keep mentioning the Yellow King and Carcossa. This comes from Clark Ashton Smith's 1899 book entitled "The King in Yellow." The King is a terrible and mysterious god and Carcossa is the city in which it lives. The back rooms are basically Carcossa as it is represented in the Call of Cthulhu TTRPG, only in CoC, Carcossa is a city rather than a maze of rooms. At the center of Carcossa is the King in Yellow its self. It wears something called the Pallid Mask that hides its true face. The realization that the King wears no mask and has no face brings madness. This is what the killer in True Detective is referring to when he tells Cole to take off his mask. The Back Rooms seems to be a version of Carcossa (the walls are even yellow) infused with a healthy dose of fear of generative AI, which reproduces imperfect representations of people, places, and things, because it does not really understand what it is representing.

Amelie W

If the backrooms people form from memories, Captain Clark must have been stalking the place and become a major question for the research team since someone had a nightmare based on that dreadful commercial. . . I don't think he's any fundamentally different from the others, except being so big. If you cracked though that outer layer of flesh and blood he'd be made of the same delicious paste. Okay I'm just mention that because the dinner scene made me think of The Holy Mountain (1973). Which I can recommend if you want the single most profoundly surreal movie I've ever seen. David Lynch's pictures really have nothing on Alejandro Jodorwoski's.

Ian Tellam

Yeah, in a sense it's a student movie given a hefty budget. Like, Sam Raimi was 21 when he made Evil Dead (although with no budget). I think they threw money at this because of the franchise potential. I think one of the things I don't really like about this film is that it seems to designed from the ground up for 7 sequels and at least 3 prequels - maybe it's just the cynic in me.

Ian Tellam

The original concept of liminal spaces are 'in-between' spaces. Places that are not destinations, but ones that you move through; airports, hotel corridors etc. The word 'liminal' means 'threshold', like a door - something you move through. It's come to encompass all sorts of 'no-places', spaces that are hard to pin down as an actual location, or existing in any particular period of time, uninhabited by people and carrying with them a sense of the uncanny.

Ian Tellam

Yeah, it's pretty good for a young director's debut - but it obviously rests heavily on the concept set out in the original creepypasta for its appeal and I don't personally think it lives up to its potential for existential horror. If anything it makes it feel a bit too grounded and explicable - more like a fluorescent-lit upside-down than something truly weird in the Lynchian sense.

Red Freckle

Has Simone done something new with her eyeshadow

Opti_Frog

Since it wasn't brought up in the trivia section, and i can't find a comment about it, the recording of the voices giving greetings in 55 different languages is a segment from the golden records sent into outer space on Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 in 1977. They are the farthest man made objects from Earth. They will be travelling through interstellar space for billions of years, long after humanity is gone.

Shawn B

You'd see the payment scene in the commercial the first time, Then the 2nd time you'd rush to write it down. I don't know if this is everybody, but seeing/hearing and remembering phone numbers was so common back then that you could get it easy as remembering someone's name.

jkls1

I noticed the Gollum on the T-shirt at the worst possible moment. Thanks George ! :D

Movies2319

I know you guys watched this back in August with the initial home release version, but you should check out the version on HBO. That was just released this past Friday. There’s a 15 minute post credit scene that y’all will enjoy for sure! It was originally included in certain exclusive theatrical releases but was just now added to the movie on the HBO version.
