I'm doing my local film industry a disservice for not having seen this yet. I guess I should finally knock out of my to-watch list.

TylerNorCal

As best friends, this is a great one for you guys to watch 😂

Mike FromOz

Moisturise those hands, Simone! You're getting pipe-hand! But seriously, I've been waiting for this all week. I love this film. So much great dialogue and layers to it all the way through. Brilliant film. For something a bit more light-hearted, I can 100% recommend Martin Mcdonagh's brother's (John Michael Mcdonagh) film "The Guard". Stars Brendan Gleeson, Don Cheadle and Mark Strong. Funny, witty and really well written. It's very much in the vein of "In Bruges", stylistically. Very much recommended.

TheLeftPecOfTheLord

If George ever revealed he hates Star Trek and Buffy - Simone: I just don’t like ya no more

Mike FromOz

The double entendre of "giving someone the finger" is *chef's kiss*

Fister Miyagi

Unrelated, but just finished watching the Aladdin reaction and Simone was talking about old Disney movies being beautiful. Y'all should definitely check out The Black Cauldron, absolutely gorgeous movie that almost bankrupted Disney animations in the 80's

Jeff K.

Simone, you know Kerry Condon too: she played Mike’s daughter in law on Better Call Saul.

While not as good as In Bruges, I still enjoyed this one. It explored an area of life that hardly gets examined, friendships that mature out and die. I’m just finding a common thread of folks hitting their late 30’s and 40’s and finding out they just don’t like their friends any more. Maybe the shared experience of school or work is no longer there to tie them together, maybe one has a change of life like marriage or serious illness, or maybe it’s just a philosophical alteration—but sometimes friendships that seem lifelong just wither and die seemingly overnight. I love how McDonagh explores that in that tragi-comic way he has about him. It just uplifts the whole topic.

Matrim

Feck and fuck are different. Feck is milder, more used in banter.

PhilM

To add another piece of evidence to George's Civil War metaphor reading of the movie, "Inisherin" is an anglicised portmanteau of Inis (island) and Éirinn, so it basically means 'The island of Ireland'.

Jose Robles

Where is this movie? I want to watch it from a while

Paul T Hewes

Kerry has done a bunch of things over the years. Rome, Lucky, Saul, that F1 movie with brad pitt. She is a great character actor.

PhilM

In terms of one old lady making the sweaters, I'm pretty sure this was for verisimilitude. Some of the islands off of Ireland have historically made knitwear. The most famous of these is Aran Islands knitwear. Having one style for all sweaters on the island makes sense.

Opti_Frog

There we have it. George is absolutely smarter than me. When i watched Banshees the first time, it took me until the VERY LAST SCENE until i caught on to the allegory. I don't think the film is a 1 to 1 metaphor, but i still felt slow and blind for not catching on earlier. I think it's absolutely possible to enjoy the film without knowledge of the cultural context, but i don't think it's possible to really understand it. It's just like how i feel about Spirited Away. Absolutely fantastic movie with gorgeous proper cinematography and lighting.

Daniel Bjork

This is absolutely just a giant allegory for the Irish civil war

Maniacalmouse

Me, as George wonders why this is labeled a drama when it is so funny: “Oh, just you wait. You’ll see……” Great reaction to an amazing movie! Always love watching you guys discover new films. 🙂

Ashton Lewis

Right, now pop Seven Psychopaths on the agenda. We all deserve a little Christopher Walken in these trying times

funky weapon

I had that. best friend since we were kids, but one day I just realized he was going down a path where I couldn't follow. cutting him off was shitty but necessary because I didn't want to drown, too. It always kinda bugged me that I'm the Colm in this situation.

mojo shivers

I had that with two high school friends. We were friends 2-3 years through high school and 12 years after. But towards the end I realized that these people I would go to classes with and hang out for hours after each day were turning into people I didn’t like. And finally I asked myself if the people they were now were people I’d even like. Was it just the fact we were friends for almost 15 years then, the only reason we still were in each other’s lives. And then I just cut them. Sometimes folks move in directions you can’t predict, and sometimes the people they become is no longer people you want in your life. Anchor people don’t always start out that way, but it doesn’t mean that gives them a pass either.

OddThomas

A bit too much bitter in this bittersweet tale, but great writing as always. Three Billboards is far superior imo. For more Kerry Condon: Train Dreams, In the Land of Saints and Sinners. Brendan Gleeson: A.I. Artifical Intelligence, The Village (2004)

elle

BTW, 100 hours is a *very* fast knitting time for those sweaters. I just finished knitting a cardigan as a gift for a family member and I clocked over 200 hours on it (and I’ve been knitting since I was 13, i.e. 44 years LOL) . The internet ‘claims’ you can knit something like that in 80-100 hours, but that’s only true if you have tons of experience. Side note: I believe a lot of the knitwear for Outlander was also outsourced locally. But to more than one knitter! LOL. I think more productions should do the same.

Andreas Buehler

Ooooh. I was just watching Rome and kept wondering why the actress seemed so familiar. From Breaking Bad.

gfixler

Simone, no worries. Anything you say that you didn't like will be forgotten by the internet, until it's put to a sick beat by JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy.

Zoran24

One of my favorites

Ashton Lewis

Colm says in the film - “And maybe there are banshees too. I just don’t think they scream to portend death anymore. I think they just sit back amused, and observe" And yes, when someone says someone fiddles with a kid, it means exactly what you think it means. In the UK we call p*dos (not sure if I can say that on here) kiddy fiddlers

Ashton Lewis

Ignore the first part, just seen it was one of your film facts at the end haha. I was just pointing it out to say that she was not using any magic to make anyone do anything, just observing

Brandon

The Guard is another great Brendan Gleason movie that he costarred in with Don Cheadle. Written and directed by John Michael McDonagh, brother of Martin that wrote and directed this and 'In Bruges'.

Tits McGee

Please, please, PLEASE do Seven Psychopaths next. Martin McDonaugh is the most underrated directors working today.

Brandon

For me, it's just a matter of seeing my friends a lot less often, due to marriage, children and other responsibilities. I've gone down from seeing my best friend nearly every day to a few times a year. When we actually get together it's as if we still see each other on a daily basis. I've never deliberately ended a friendship like Colm does in this movie, but there are people I simply drifted away from without ever having an official falling out with them. I figure if we wanted to be closer, we would, but we aren't. So we leave it at that.

Angela D. Mitchell

I have never been able to get all the way through this movie, which for me is seriously one of the most depressing things I have ever seen. I'm still gobsmacked that it's supposed to be a comedy. I get that it's a big fat allegory but JFC, I made it halfway through and was scarred for life. And I've heard about how it ends and am so happy I stopped watching. As with One Battle After Another, this is one movie I just don't get the love for at all.

Andrew

I view the old woman as being like The Watcher from the Marvel Universe. The Watchers are cosmic beings that are there to observe and monitor the activities of all other beings. They do not interfere. Only observe. In the comics, if the Watcher showed up then something significant was about to happen. The old lady didn't interfere or influence. Only observed.

Martin

Okay, now you’ve got to get “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” watched. Don’t poll it, just throw it on a Thursday or Sunday and thank me later. Might be Martin McDonagh’s best work. Equal parts heartbreaking and funny. A brilliant movie in every respect. Just do it.

Obsidian_Rose

Re the trivia, is Collin Farrel some kind of reverse Disney princess, that all the animals just hate?

Jay Johnson

kinda hurt my heart seeing Simone get so giddy about the donkey in the first part of the film, knowing what was to come and how hard she'd take it.

Jay Johnson

in a more pleasant note, I believe the drum that Simone liked was a bodhran (my town has done an Irish fest each summer for the past 20 years or so, except for maybe one year during the pandemic), so I've gained some knowledge and appreciation for traditional Irish folk music. I know there is a strong Celtic music tradition in Nova Scotia (particularly Cape Breton), but I bet there are fests/musicians around BC too (and in Montreal or where ever George is)

Tyler Foster

In this economy we can only have one Banshee.

funky weapon

Beautiful movie. Not often you get such a great story about grief, but that's really what it is. It's about a man grieving the loss of a good friend. And yes you guys were right about it being an allegory. I think McDonagh said as much. The figure standing on the cliffs near Padraic was Dominic, not the banshee. That's why shivon (I am not spelling that) looked so concerned when she noticed who was up there with Padraic. Dominic likely saw her off and then flung himself off of the cliffs for the reasons discussed in the discussion. Also three billboards. Absolutely fantastic film that earned every award it got.

Brandon Meng

I've been rec'ing Three Billboards to them forever now, would make for an absolute killer reaction

Kevin M. Pitts

This film came along a few years after my longtime best friend ghosted me out of the blue. In that case it was after one of the best weeks I remember having in our relationship. “Everything was fine yesterday” was such an apt tagline for that and this film. So, I kept seeing the buzz this movie was getting and seeing what it was about, I both really wanted to see and didn’t want to see. While there were some scenes that really hit hard, like the scene where Colm gives Padraig a ride home and he breaks down, I admit, I enjoyed the film and the performances immensely and I found it somewhat cathartic.

newhastings

She should've won that Oscar and im still upset about it

erosennin

about that dududududu song at the beginning that Simone mentioned... I have trauma from that. I was working at Gamescom, the video game trade show for 6 days and the next booth over was 2K Interactive and they had this party music on all day long with some small intermissions of people screaming and giving away shirts and other merch. after days of going over the same spiel with thousands of people, standing on my feet with breaks barely long enough to smoke a whole cigarette and THIS music playing around a hundred times a day so loud you need to scream even though you have no voice left after the second day...

ShittyShittyGameGang

Yall gotta watch The Grand Seduction now, similar vibes I feel like but (if I'm remembering correctly) alot lighter hearted all the way through. It really made me realize that Brendan Gleeson is one of my favorite actors.

Cam

I will forever be bitter for the fact that Jamie Lee Curtis won the Oscar over Kerry Condon. Kerry was just unbelievable in this film.

James W.

First off: DEAR GOD GEORGE PUT ROME ON THE SCHEDULE FFS! Simone will enjoy It I think and you'll be able to flex those history nerd muscles. Kerry Condon as Octavia in Rome was great but she has been doing such good work wherever she is, I am always happy to see her. Banshees is a hard watch but I love it. McDonough makes films that don't waste my time or attention and I love him for it. I'm not for taking sides or anything since it is all sort of heightened and allegorical, but I understand where Colm is coming from as a character, even if he is being a bit of a dick about it. I have been in his shoes before as far as realizing I had a friend I no longer felt real kinship with anymore. Its not easy or fun to disentangle from a person's life, I lost some relationships over it but in the end I think it was the right move. Empty platitudes and politeness is "Nice" but I don't think it is very kind. That plastic niceness so often masks waves judgement and general shittyness I can't engage with it. As George pointed out everyone in this movie is a bit mean. Dom's father being the worst of them but Paddy had a violent disregard and disdain for the boundaries Colm was setting; there is a violence to that weaponized politeness that makes my skin crawl. Siobhan is by far my favorite character, in that she was neither mean nor saccharine, just a solid person. I take a rough truth over a smooth lie any day.

Ste Rawlings

I think the cop actually represents Irish institutional corruption and the repressive silence that took root in the newly formed Irish Free State after the war.

MacGuffinStuff

So Martin McDonagh is now one of my favorite writer/directors, confirmed. This will require many more rewatches, suffices to say I loved it, so. (All that was said in my head in prob more a Dublin accent because that's the one I'm more used to, my theory about the Canadian "about a boot" is that Canadian has a little subtle Irish Lilt) The CRONE! AKA the Banshee. Lot to say but probably just repeating what others have, but there is this joke that Mexicans and Irish are so similar (Battallón de San Patricio, look it up), our sometimes dark almost fatalistic but also familiar sense of humor, always taking the piss as the English say, and we also sometimes get into these stupid stubborn rows/ beefs/farts (the word for FART, as well as a "problem between people" in Mexican slang is PEDO but pronounce PEHtho and an entirely different meaning from English pedo, eee 😳) with people over some of the dumbest most petty nonsense. So stubborn though. Sad.

Holy Squire

The carter Burwell score was moody and introspective it reminded me of A Serious Man

REDR58

"Dramedy"? "Tragicomedy"?

REDR58

She is also the voice of F.R.I.D.A.Y. in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame (2019).

Gizmo_Mogwai_

This came completely out of left field. What a great movie. Always a treat to watch a movie I've never seen with you guys. ✌️🙌🙏

Philipp Roensch

George right on the money, with only peripheral knowledge I spotted this only later in the movie. But what a vibe, so cozy and human, sad and hilarious, love it.

Inkpendude

there's so many good movies and shows they will never watch just because they neve win the polls

Thall

Great fun to have rewatched this with you! I just love this movie, from the insane comedy at first to just the utter despair and darkness revealed bit by bit

MeetMountain

Never seen this movie before but the way I sobbed with Colin when he was on the buggy after being punched out. I am an only child, and to me, my friendships are extremely important. If my best friends said they didn’t like me anymore and just stopped talking to me, it would absolutely devastate me in indescribable ways. I would never be able to make a new friend again.

fforw

I don't like the movie. More specifically, while it is well done and acted, it feels outrageous that I was made to watch this. Everything is awful, people are mean or plain self-mutilating. Yes, yes, it's all a big allegory on the Irish civil war I know jack shit about and don't really feel like I need to. Maybe this should have been just stayed in Ireland. Maybe the solution is to imitate Colm and go: "No, movie, you're dull and depressing!" and turn movie off. (Still not cutting off any fingers)

Beth

I'd read Dominic's death as suicide, and the Banshee calling Siobhan over by the lake was actually gesturing to Dominic, as in she knew his death was soon :( Loved the reaction guys

Jacob Colson

Still waiting for the next video by him!

Jacob Colson

And Simone needs to put Buffy on the schedule! Or at least let George watch a few of Simone's favorite episodes.

Jacob Colson

I felt the same way about Dazed and Confused. I've never enjoyed that movie after watching it.

zona999

They have to watch "The Killing of A Sacred Deer" which reunites Collin Farrell and Barry Keoughan(Dominic)with Nicole Kidman. Very good and very creepy.

2026-09-05 05:00 I once heard an interesting theory about why Colm really doesn't want to talk to Padraic. It was actually the opposite of selfishness. Colm has realized that as most of the people on the island, he wasted his life and became depressed and butter. Padraic is the only happy person on this island and he doesn't want him to become like him and waste away his life. And he is so serious about it that he's willing to go even that far to cut off his fingers. That's how much he cares about Padraic. What do you think about it?

Such a good film.

Ethan Holgate

He has a new film coming out this year called wild horse

Feck is the PG word for fuck in Ireland

James W.

100%. Besides it being a very fun watch, it was a fairly impactful show on pop culture and you can see the ripple effects of Whedon across genre television and overall after Buffy. I think Rome will fit in their schedule a bit better than Buffy because it short, 2 HBO sized season so a total of 22 episodes all in instead of the massive invest of 8 (?) old school TV seasons of Buffy plus Angel could technically be included.

I.Have.No.Band

I never considered it to be anything else? :/ I guess it could be a murder by the father, since there's this threat evoked, but.. I don't know, to me it makes more sense that Dominic is just depressed after being disappointed at all the people around him.. 😓

Sir Jimmothy

Got to the part where you said you didn't expect this much comedy, but watching the trailer before seeing it in the cinema convinced me there was going to be a lot more comedy than there was - everyone actually left the cinema seeming depressed. It was a good film, but very depressing. Continuing the rewatch to see how I feel now :]

Tim Miller

Love this movie, but it is very sad. If you want some more lighthearted Irish art, more true comedy, still hoping for Derry Girls at some point from you guys!

SnabbKassa

Correct. Feck is a clipped form of "effect", meaning value, vigour, or quantity. This origin gives us standard English words like feckless (lacking effect or worthless) It is etymologically unconnected to the Germanic origin of fuck, which we see in German as "fick"

Angela D. Mitchell

Sure, those are great! I'm just... "Where's the comedy part?" :D Forget laughing, I never smiled once at this movie. It's just not for me.
