Jeff K.

Second one is solid but not as good, but worth the watch just to see a young, pre-Fugees Lauryn Hill.

drunkemonkie .

also keep up the good work ...much luv

Dolorosa

My pfp kinda fits lol

Marcus Hicks

I loved Sister Act 2, but the original is definitely the best.

Nabikon

biggest jewelry store near me I know of is Borsheims

Chris Rivard

If you’d ever been taught by a nun in a Catholic school, you’d understand why a Catholic might kidnap a nun.

PaulChristopher

#cinebinge A $10,000-$30,000 piece in a humble jewelry store ups the status of the store. And a $70 necklace can be sold for $110.

Life in the cave of Garanoga

For starters Jewelry is insanely marked up in terms of luxury pricing. Always shop around. But as for the expensive piece in the window it has a few reasons. One is advertising how high end they offer, another is to sell most likely on a payment plan, but more likely as a rental or lease item. You can rent it for an event or occasion. That's honestly how most celebrities do it. Either, lease, rent, or the original owner loans it out as advertisement.

ThetaSigmaTheOriginal

I'm a near-billionaire, and you'd be surprised where we go. I went to a pizza express once, back when I couldn't sweat properly.

JH

I keep forgetting that Rom from Star Trek DS9 is in this lol

Jeff K.

By the way George, since you watch The Simpsons and Futurama I’m just assuming you’ve watched at least some of King of the Hill. Kathy Najimy, the super cheerful nun, is the voice of Peggy Hill.

Josh Minke

It took me years to notice that Whoopi didn't have eyebrows lol. She just looks so normal. I guess it would be weird if she did have them haha

Jonathan Eaton

I knew a very rich woman that bought jewelry at the mall. Picture a Carmela Soprano type woman that didn't need to check with her husband.

Jonathan Eaton

"Makin' Whoopee!" is a 100 year old song and I believe it's the origin of the expression.

Senec

Re: Jewelry Store with one expensive piece - I have to imagine that its meant as a status symbol to effectively say "We're a real jewelry store", as opposed to one that sells cheap mass market stuff. Its really the kinda thing that only matters to someone thats REALLY into that specific type of ornament. Also, not "Coven", its "Convent". Coven is a group of witches, Convent is a group of nuns.

Jonathan Eaton

The guy George said "Really does sound like someone from The Sopranos" played Junior Soprano's lawyer.

Stephanie Bedworth

I'm gonna hazard a guess that Harvey Keitel was talking to those two woman in the casino about Carmen Miranda. She was a famous singer back in the forties who would wear crazy hats, a lot of time with fruit on them, while she performed.

Michael

Aw man, always kind of a bummer when I start a reaction excited and then find out at the beginning of the video that one of them already saw it lol...so many videos unfinished at the 2-5 minute mark because of that. Definitely wouldn't have voted for it had I known, just never enjoy when 50%+ of a reactor group has seen the thing already. But I hope George enjoyed! And plenty of fans are fine with those reactions, just a personal taste thing, not a complaint or gripe =)

jmundt33a

That is the Beethoven/Home Alone tradition of goons

L77045

The overly expensive, out of place jewelry thing is a sales tactic. Works like: "Oh, I wish I could have that thing, but look at this thing, it is like that / I like this one more, and it's only 1/5th as much!" Rewires brain from "wow, $3,000 is a lot of money" to "it's only a fraction of that $15,000 thing and I can have sort of that same thing I didn't even know I wanted". Same thing happens with the big impulse buy positions at Costco, etc.

Lloyd Franklin

You need to watch the sequel, it's much better than this one.

JH

You’d also be surprised, at the time the then Pope, John Paul II, actually liked the film and said so in the press.

Matthew Johnson

George, you mentioned Bill Nunn - you guys definitely need to watch "Do the Right Thing". It's one of the most important movies of the 1980s and he plays an iconic character in it.

Brad Lowry

Do we need to warn about “Spoiler Alerts” in these comments?… well, I do divulge two spoilers about two movies...It isn’t a Comedy, but Harvey Keitel does play the one cop that was trying to understand and save Thelma & Louise “from themselves” in, of course, “Thelma & Louse”… but his WORST ever character, IMHO, is Jodie Foster’s Pimp in Taxi Driver!

Matthew Johnson

"Harvey Keitel is a bit type-casted, eh?" George, I'm gonna keep raining recommendations on you if you keep teeing them up like that. :) If you want to see Harvey in a totally different mode, you have to watch "The Piano" - an amazing movie and he's wild and sexy and soulful in it.

Bill B.

LOVE this movie!! We watched it all the time at home when I was a kid. Listened to the soundtrack in the car on repeat, even got my uncle (a priest) to convince my grandma that at the end, it wasn’t an actor, it was really Pope JP2 who was applauding up in the balcony 😂

Rachiebubbles

I love the 2nd film growing up, yes the first is better. But its a good family fun film.

Jamie

There's another Star Trek cameo very early on :)

Bill B.

Simone you had a Q about convents and TV. It entirely depends on the religious order. I work for nuns, they have movie nights and stuff. I also know another nun who used to live in a convent where TV was not allowed. So, it depends on the order.

Matt88g

So yes meatball lady from wedding singer is in this, Ellen Albertini Dow is also the grandma in wedding crashers

fforw

Many expensive items are mostly there to make the prices of other items seem less outrageous. And maybe the random idiot wanting to splurge will actually buy them.

R. Chang

George is making fun of the idea of people randomly walking into a church because they hear music, but I have literally done that. You hear something interesting and go investigate.

Jaaahn

hes making fun of edgy teenagers in a rough neighborhood hearing some basic singing from a church and think church is 'cool' now...

Maria Forsström

Harvey Keitel is also in Cop Land, that was on one of the latest polls. I know it didn't win but you guys should really watch it, so many great actors!

mpd

For different Harvey Keitel you should watch The Duellists (1977)

Stefan Daniw

Lots of stores do something very similar to that gold necklace, it's a way to attract customers into the store, then hope you buy other things.

Tay Schumaker

George so cynical. As if you haven’t been lured into a church by the sound of upbeat gospel music. The youths crave it

Bill B.

George I seriously doubt there were any protests when this movie came out lol. Every nun I’ve ever met (a lot) loves this movie. It’s honestly one of the only films that doesn’t completely screw up its portrayal of Catholicism. And it’s fun. Also it takes a very long time to become a nun. In the order I work for, it’s about seven years.

Ry Jo

Jumpin' Jack Flash (1986) should be next for more Whoopi Goldberg

Tay Schumaker

They are Catholic. The pope visits…

BzzBzzBzzBzzBzz

To your jewelry question George, I believe it is a sales strategy. Make one out of reach price very visible and people will be willing to pay more for the real items. They never expect to sell the expensive one. It just functions comparatively to shift expectations

Ari Ramirez

Would a nun license be called a nuncense?

Jacob Colson

Dang... have Simone & George just given up answering questions under their new question post?

D. Kennedy

George can never just watch just something without being super judgy. When ppl started walking up to the church, he couldn't stop laughing, it wasn't that funny or absurd. lol He couldn't even pay attention to them singing. Sometimes it's just about watching a film and enjoying it for what it is.

Eversharpe

Drug dealers mostly.I knew a guy that bought a 3K diamond $ sign ring from a jewelry counter in a mall. It's also possible that they made it themselves and it's as an advertisement for that service.

Cinebinge

nope. as stated in the post, those questions will be answered in the preshow portion of our videos. so when we start recording this coming week, we'll be answering them and they will be posted the week after.

Jacob Colson

Ahh... okay, thanks. I'm guessing these last few reactions were recorded a while ago?

Cinebinge

all reactions are recorded 5-8 days in advance to allow copyright checks.

Cinebinge

Hi D. Kennedy. I laugh because I personally found it funny, while it may not be to you or others, both me and Simone thought it was funny, and there is nothing more subjective than what one finds funny. More over, please try to understand that to me, laughing at something and enjoying something arent mutually exclusive, and that there is more than 1 way to enjoy something. It may not be the way you personally prefer, but it does not mean it cant exist. I had a great time with this movie, and enjoyed it all the way through, even if i found some moments unintentionally funny as enjoying something isnt all or nothing to me.

YearRoundHibernater

Not got to the reaction yet. The jeweller probably bought the chain from a customer, not a supplier and the 17000 is likely a mark up big enough to justify the window space even if it's unlikely to sell. Chances are he could still sell on to another jeweller or auction and not lose money but they wouldn't make near as much.

Jacob Colson

Thanks, y'all! If you want another eerie turn from Robin Williams, check out Insomnia.

Firrin

Giant sign: "RENO"; Simone: "Vegas is built weird!"

akaTheBAY-AY-RON

There's several reasons a jewelry store might have a necklace that seems out of place like that. They might have gotten a crazy good deal on it, possibly when gold was much cheaper (Simone mentioned this) and if that's the case, they could definitely sell it much cheaper than a necklace like that could go elsewhere IF they wanted to get rid of it fast. But it also (since you said it's in the window) draws attention. Catches the eye. It's purpose (until it's sold) could simply be to tell the public "look, we have classy and high quality shit here. Come inside and look." Also, if the gold jewelry inside the store is cheaper, buying something that costs $500-3,000 knowing that 25K necklace is also in the store, makes people think the 500-3000 they're paying is a better deal. And then there is the off chance it catches the right right buyer who just so happens to walk buy. It's an item that they can make a lot of money on, but also doesn't take up a lot of space, so there's no real downside to having it there, even if it doesn't sell for a long time.

Geoff Richards

Regarding 'Whoopee' (or maybe also 'Whoopi'), there's a Broadway show of that name from 1928, which was made into a film 2 years later, featuring a song of the same name: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whoopee! And yes, 'Whoopee' in the song means what you think it does. Here's a recording of the song from the film, staring some guy called Eric Cantor (never seen the whole film, but a comment says someone plays him in Broadwalk Empire, which I've also not seen): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANRPmTZRqkg The song's been covered many times. I knew the version by Harry Nilsson growing up.

Jaaahn

George how dare you find something funny when this guy didnt?! dont you know your job is to pretend to love everything and say the audience wants you to say rather than being genuine?!

heidismiles

And Jennifer Love Hewitt!

Daniel Griffith

To answer George's question, Catholics are allowed to gamble. There is nothing wrong with games of chance. It would be a sin if you did so excessively and harmed your family. The same principle applies to alcohol.

heidismiles

I figure it's at least reasonable for someone to be like "they sound great today! let's go see."

heidismiles

I used to tutor for millionaires, and they definitely ate a lot more basic takeout food than I expected!

heidismiles

She also played a nun on an airplane in My Blue Heaven (Steve Martin)

heidismiles

George I think what they're saying is that there was this lovely moment where Mary Robert sings for the first time, and you missed it. I get it, it's not wrong to laugh at stuff like that! But it can be a bummer when it distracts from the good parts of the movie.

u_mike

The sequel does not deserve such a low rating, it is not as good as the first one but it is fun. And it is not the same thing again, it's the same characters with a new premise.

Jaaahn

i agree missing a moment sucks but thats part of reactions. theres no way he couldve known a moment is coming. but also heidi youre being too generous with ops comment. he starts off with an accusation, ironically calling George judgy all cause he laughed. thats all that happened. the guy laughed at something he thought was funny. then proceed to say hes not paying attention, and that he isnt enjoying the film for what it is. seriously ironic that he accuses George of being judgy when he himself is doing exactly that cause a guy laughed.

heidismiles

I agree; it wasn't "judgy."

Jenny MacRunnel

I remember when this came out, and it was such a big hit in churches and with "church going folk." All our churches in town incorporated the music into their choirs. It kind of "re-invigorated" music for church, at least what I saw.

Jonathan Eaton

George started a joke but didn't finish. 3 nuns walk into a bar and say "We need 6 beers for medicinal purposes. Mother Superior is constipated." The bartender gives them the beers and the nuns begin drinking them. The bartender says "I thought they were for Mother Superior.". "They are! When she sees us she's gonna shit!"

Dean Schulz

Cant believe she wanted to be friends with Epstein😂

elle

Harvey Keitel plays a very nuanced role in a film that flies far too much under the radar these days: The Piano. It won three oscars. And Whoopi Goldberg is unforgettable in The Color Purple (purple again!), a film that famously got 11 Oscar nominations and won 0. It’s not a perfect film, but certainly a film milestone.

Hypatia

Another reason on why a jewellery store for us plebs has pieces like that is to subtly change your mindset psychologically. As in “ Hey I can’t afford this $20k piece that I absolutely love, but I can stretch to this 10k one instead on this 1k one. The idea is the Goldilocks effect, offer three price points, most people will gravitate to the middle. Also it’s partly the same idea as the airport - advertising but in this case to get you/keep you in the store longer.

Temba His Arms Wide

Hope you do Sister Act 2 as well. Personally I like that one better.

Drew Acheson

IMO the sequel is better and more well known. It also has Lauren Hill in it.

Klaus Niehues

Regarding George's Jewelery Question: yes, the sales aspect (also called the anchoring effect) is important. Additionally: think back to Uncut Gems - was the place you saw really more suspect than Adam Sandler's jewellery store?

Adam

If you're a Lauren Hill fan, you might want to see the sequel.

Jay

Back in the day, I prayed I'd be as cool as Frank-Kay when I was older 😂😂

Jay

"oh, la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la....sweet thing" Does Gen Z know about the Fugees?

Jeff K.

Holy hell, I completely forgot that JLH was in the movie.

Jeff K.

@Jay they damn well better. Some might say that if you don’t know Lauryn Hill, you’ve received… *sunglasses* …a miseducation. *YEAAAAAAAHHHH* (Context for those who don't know: Lauryn Hill's debut solo album, which is one of the most critically acclaimed debut albums in hip hop history, was called The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill)

Jay

Whoa, that's Radio Raheem. How the f__k have I never noticed that? G & S, just put 'Do the Right Thing' on your watch list now.... RIGHT NOW! Sister Act is a lot of fun, didn't mean to be disparaging:)

Steve Matthews

Honesty shocked to hear the sequel is 19%, that is ridiculous, I really enjoyed it and its solid as hell. I can understand its not a billion dollar movie, but come on now, 19%, really? The audience score is 60%, maybe listen to that one more.

JH

Oh sheeit! I forgot…. And I just saw the Rascals reaction video recently too… lol

Jay

'The Score' and the 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill' I feel like so much of 90s culture has bled into Tik Tok and insta reels. But I can't recall seeing/hearing anything from those 2 albums.... leave them to us 🙏

Jeff K.

I’ll also give a shoutout to Lauryn being on one of the best tracks Nas ever put out, If I Ruled the World. And since Nas is, IMO, the greatest rapper ever, that boosts her up even more.

Neumann

19% for sister act 2 is absolute bullshit! it's a great sequel and a lot of fun in it's own right, critics just hated it because whoppi goldberg was sharing the spotlight instead of being the main driving force behind the plot (literally from the critic's score summary on RT.)

Jonas

I first saw this when I was 9. Watching it now, I feel like Mary Robert was an awakening for me.

Brandon

"Coven" 🤣 George, as someone who was raised Roman Catholic, but doesn't practice it, that made my day. I knew I wouldn't be the only one to notice it.

Matt Landon

Sister Act 2 is worth watching, and is comparable in quality to this one, and actually has a more believable premise. Some 80's/90's kids will even prefer it since it revolves around a high school choir, and includes a star-making performance from a young Lauryn Hill (plus some early Alanna Ubach & Jennifer Love Hewitt). It is still very much of it's time though, so your mileage may vary.

AVATAR-X

Definitely agree. Guinan in an adventurous Rom-Com, Simone will love it.

Matt Landon

Yeah, it does look silly when it happens in real time and involves multiple young people being lured in at the same time, pied piper style. But it's just a visual shorthand to show that good music will draw people in over time, particularly when it's replacing poorly staged solemn dirges with more upbeat, "worldly" music that is uplifting. Positive change does draw attention, it just does so via word of mouth over time.

AVATAR-X

He played one of the two Ferengi in the episode of TNG they watched this week, S05E21 "The Perfect Mate" also another Ferengi in S03E19 "Captain's Holiday"

JH

I remember that too… just forgot the episode title

streaky

The sequel is solid. A little convoluted again, but definitely worth watching, plenty fun. I actually saw it again recently, and it was better than I remembered. The third one, before she passed away, Whoopi was talking about moving production to the UK just so Maggie Smith could be in it. Also yes you haven't seen that TNG episode yet, but it isn't far off.

Brandon

George, regarding gambling as viewed by the Catholic Church: Gambling and games of chance are not strictly prohibited, but they are considered immoral if they become an addiction and get in the way of ones responsibilities. I don't think the bible looks down on gambling much either, but it does warn against get rich quick schemes and encourages an honest living. "Wealth gained hastily will dwindle."

D. Kennedy

God, I really struck a nerve with you didn't I? You can't stop replying to stuff. You just agree with everything George does... good for you!!!

REDR58

Bingo or similar games were commonly played at fundraisers at my Catholic grade school.

Vinnero

Future reference, Reno and Vegas are 2 different places. Both in Nevada but Vegas is closer to Los Angeles and Reno is close to Sacramento and San Francisco

Duh-jango

I enjoyed the second one. If I remember correctly, there isn’t as much comedy or it isn’t as funny, but still a good story. And pretty much all the main characters return.

Patrick - Excelsior

They are Catholic Nuns. Otherwise why would the Pope, the head of the Catholic church, visit them ot for that matter why would they care so much. When Sister Mary Patrick expresses shock that someone would kidnap a nun, Sister Mary Lazarus asks "Were they Catholics?" It was a dry, sarcastic joke. Mary Lazarus was implying that non-Catholics wouldn't know or care that nuns are off-limits or sacred. Catholic viewers felt the film was lighthearted fun rather than a mean satire attacking the church, treating the sisters with basic dignity. Whoopi Goldberg shared that Pope Francis praised her work on the film and the joy it brought to people.

Simone's Coconut Squire

That is one reason. It creates an air of quality to all the goods in the store, makes everything feel like you’re getting a better deal than you are, it brings in customers (curiosity value), and finally, you have to remember that jewelry stores have HUGE margins. In general the retailer is gonna pay about 1/10th the price they sell it for, so it’s not as big an investment as it seems.

Simone's Coconut Squire

“Maggie Smith! Holy Shit! Harvey Keitel Holy Shit!” Are we SURE Simone has seen this? 🤣

Foggy

i hope you guys will watch the second one! it’s my favorite of the two, and it has ms. lauryn hill!

Matrim

I got to the point where George seems a little…not confused but sort of “well duh” about the idea of nuns going out and working with the public. Something to keep in mind is that not all nuns do the same things. The orders can be very different. In this movie they are Carmelite nuns. They are what’s called a contemplative order, they live cloistered lives separate from secular society. The bulk of their work is prayer. They pray for about 8 hours every day, spend 5 or so hours doing manual labor, and they speak as little as possible. It’s a very austere and sequestered life. In the next movie they retcon them into being Franciscans, which as an order are much more involved in things like service to the poor and needy, so what you see in this movie is extremely unusual for a Carmelite convent.

JumpTroopC5

She's not like other nuns.

Donna Castellano

Being Catholic, I don't remember a single person being mad about this movie. Honestly, they seemed happy it was portraying the church in a positive light with lots of fun music. Now Dogma and The Last Temptation of Christ, on the other hand, big mad. Both are great movies. I'm convinced anyone who says Temptation is sacrilegious never watched it. The very end of the film puts the previous two and a half hours into perspective. It has one of my favorite soundtracks, too.

Donna Castellano

Honestly, I liked the songs in 2 better than this one. Outside of the hip version of "Hail Holy Queen", it's just girl group songs with one word changed to make it about God. The singing is way better in the second film as well.

Donna Castellano

With as many comments they got about CopLand in that poll, I bet they get to it sooner rather than later.

REDR58

Wendy Makkena. And a redhead to boot!

SmorggyPorggy

You guys should add Apocalypto to the movie list !

REDR58

Priests, at least, also smoked and drank (at least in my day (1the 1980s) and well before that.

REDR58

There is absolutely no doubt that the scene of the people on the street coming into the church was intended to be BOTH inspirational and humorous.

REDR58

They figured it out shortly afterwards.

REDR58

The length of time it takes for men and women to become priests and nuns also isn't just about needing years of study, but to make sure that the life they are going to enter is the right one for them. One of my friends had a mother who was a former nun and a father who was priest. They both left the church in their early 40s and were about 20 years older than most of the other parents of the students at my Catholic grade school. When I first got to know that friend, I thought his parents were his grandparents!

REDR58

Max Grodénchik!

REDR58

My old Catholic grade school was run by Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and they had TV and radios, and just all the other normal stuff, but it was communal. I spent a good amount of time in that convent over the years doing various things as well as my classmates, and was very familiar with the place. The priests, on the other hand, had a large rectory as a home and each of the priests had a suite to himself and his own car, plus a live-in housekeeper and secretary. The dozen or so nuns each had a room nearly as small as the one seen in the movie in the convent and shared the 2 cars the school owned. They shopped, cooked and cleaned for themselves, unlike the priests. All the nuns are long gone from that school and have been for years, but some priests remain.

Simone's Coconut Squire

I’m going to disagree with you SLIGHTLY. Catholics aren’t just allowed to gamble, they LOVE it. I’ve yet to see a Catholic Church that don’t love a Casino Night fundraiser. 😉

REDR58

I thought it was a nice touch that all of the nuns in the movie had "Mary" as a first name, given that many Carmelite nuns practice this, or did. The nuns of The Immaculate Heart of Mary that I grew up with did not use that naming convention. I cannot tell you how many times I have sung and heard all of the songs from the movie going to a Catholic grade school/Church, though they never sounded as good as they do in the movie!

REDR58

Yes, the movie was generally well-regarded at the time by the Church.

REDR58

Oh, and the one movie that comes to mind that spawned some protest was "Benedetta" (2021) by Paul Verhoeven, about lesbian nuns, but that was rather minor. I only know that because I own the movie. And of course, The Last Temptation of Christ and Dogma (to a lesser extent?) mentioned below by Donna was the biggest protest-inducing one that I recall from the time, and also "The Da Vinci Code" (2006).

MacGuffinStuff

I have not seen this movie since BEFORE it was released in theaters. Just a fun fact, when I was I think freshman year, my friend's girlfriend got four tickets to a test screening of this movie. Small audience and we had a questionnaire at the end, what we liked, what we didn't etc. I remember my friends got really irritated because I actually took the questionnaire seriously and they just wanted to go to the In N Out in Pomona. I would have no idea if any of my critique was taken seriously, but here we go! Was just watching TNG episode with Guinan and saying i love Whoopi Goldberg (COLOR PURPLE 💜 come on people, watch it!).

Tyler Explains It All

George the joke should have been to start the movie: let's watch this sister act. It was right there.

MacGuffinStuff

George, your question about the etymology of "Whoopi", I know the euphemisms for sex is probably much older but I remember as a kid, re-runs of "The Newlywed Game" and they would ask partners to answer questions trying to match their partner's answer, and it got cringey sometimes. Best one and you can find it on YT, they asked the wife "where's the weirdest place you've ever wanted to make whoopie?"... "The Ass?" 🤣

beefjerkywizard

Agreed. My crush continued when I saw her in Camp Nowhere

OddThomas

Looking forward to the next Star Trek film (one of my favourites) iykyk

Elvenwitch

I don't know if it was in use earlier, but the TV game show The Newlywed Game used the phrase "Making Whoopee" as a replacement for sex. I am certain that the Whoopee Cushion is much older, but I have no idea how a fart joke became synonymous with the PG version of having sex. As for the "Are they Catholic?" joke. Many Catholics go to Catholic school and are taught by Nuns. Many people have been abused by said Nuns, and hold a grudge. My cousin was repeatedly locked in her locker by a specific Nun who did it to the pretty and popular girls as a punishment for the sin of pride. The school condoned it, so nothing could be done about it. There was also corporal punishment with rulers and yardsticks. If you remember in The Blues Brothers, the Nun attacked them with both.

Jonathan

Another Whoopi Goldberg movie y'all should see The Color Purple (1985)

OddThomas

Yeah, kinda ruined Project Hail Mary because they knew the book already

Patrick

Holy crap, I just realised that was Max Grodenchéck(Rom from DS9) who gets murdered at the start.

Lessiarty

Completely unrelated, but can I take this moment to say how much I HATE this stupid fucking scrollbar.

WastedPo

I haven't really started the movie reaction yet, but maybe a mall store like that would stock a $17,000 piece of jewelry to draw people into the store to gawk at it. And then while they're there, they might look around at the more reasonably priced pieces.

Richard Z Herrera

I'm sorry, the second movie is much better than the first. Love it. I hope they actually watch it.

WastedPo

I agree with this. He didn't just laugh, but he wouldn't stop laughing like it was the most ludicrous thing he'd ever seen. They basically missed out on the authentic enjoyment to be had with this scene because them harping on that one moment went on for so long.

Brandon

Yeah, definitely. Church Bingo was a big thing for my grandparents, and still is for my mom and her friends.

Ceruleo

The other thing I thought of besides the comment others have made about the expensive chain being a sales tactic is that he mentioned that it was an independent jewelry store. There are a lot of stores I go to that are local places that used to have good locations, but as online shopping took hold, they moved into undesireable strip malls or across from food courts in malls. Their loyal customer base follow them for their higher end stuff, but they also cater to the walk-in mall crowd.

Ceruleo

Whoopee meant "noisy, unrestrained revelry," and was a euphemism for sex and the fart noise and ensuing laughter is also noisy, unrestrained revelry.

Brandon

When it comes to movies featuring nuns being protested, 'The Devils' from 1972 is the first movie that comes to mind and was definitely protested on release. It was banned in many countries. The director's cut has been highly sought after, but it was recently restored and was shown at Cannes this year. I think it might be out on digital and disk by the end of the year. Now that would be a wild reaction.

REDR58

Sounds intriguing. I’ll have to track that down if it comes out on disc.

REDR58

Goons. Hired goons!

REDR58

Incidentally, the singing voice for young Mary Robert (played by Wendy Makkena) was provided by Andrea Robinson.

JulioLG

I think George laughed that way because of the improbable of something like this happening and nothing wrong with it, but I think in the 80s or early 90s in a neightbourhood that liked soul music it wasnt sooo inprobable but still totally understadable reaction, lets not be so peeky about things folks

I love the second one and had actually melded the 2nd one with this one in my memories. Like I remembered her being in witness protection but I thought the plot of the 2nd one happened in this one too. I also for some reason had it in my mind that she was a sex worker, not a singer. Which is weird cuz I don't think I've watched this since I was a kid.

While it's no bad boys 2, I actually prefer the second sister act

Yes, but the comic incompetence is a through line from Home Alone to this to Beethoven. Same medium stakes (for the time) family film.

"My critique" is a joke of course, I was a teenager, I probably wrote three paragraphs indicting the Church lol. Also I don't actually remember if it was In N Out they wanted to go to, but they were hungry and that theater was in Claremont, you drive down Garey to get to the 60 to go home, technically the In N Out on Indian Hill is closer but not as the crowded Nissan Sentra flies.

Reason a dinky mall jewelry store has a $17,000 necklace: • owner's father was tricked into buying it, told son for years "Some day somebody gonna waltz in and buy that necklace, you'll see, and then we'll be on easy street"; son keeps it in the window to honor Papa's legacy/dream • it's not actually for sale; it's cursed, and the only way to keep the demon inside is to keep it displayed for sale, due to the Merchant's Ward, a spell placed on it by the family more than 100 years ago • shop owner overheard a guy say "That is so skibidi gyatt, bro I would buy it if it were $17,000"; the store owner marked it up the second he left, despite not knowing what "skibidi gyatt" meant • It's worth $600; shop owner has been trying to find it's real worth to the market, though, pricing it initially at $1,000,000, and lowering it by $1,000 every day, for over 2.5 years now • "Hey, you just gotta take a chance, you know? That's how I got your mother. She was so beautiful, none of the other guys would ask her out. They all thought she was taken, or that she'd turn them down. Same thing with that necklace. You never know if someone's gonna pay $17,000 until you price it, and watch what happens. What!? Yeah, I'm telling him the story of how I asked you out! Yeah, maybe I brought up the necklace, too, what about it?! Mind your business, woman! Let me finish my story! Jesus Christ on the cross and his mother Mary... Sorry 'bout that. Anyway, like I was saying, that's what I did." People who might buy a $17,000 necklace at a dinky jewelry store in a mall: • rich guy falls in love with girl who works at mall; surprises her by bringing her to the store and buying her the most expensive thing in there • drunk rich guy ends up at mall, buys it along with everything else in the store, wakes up with no idea where all the jewelry came from, and doesn't really care, because he's got a party to get to • it was actually bought 11 years ago by an old man who put it on layaway/layby, and has been coming in every month to make a tiny payment from his Canadian Pension Plan check • poor guy who strikes it rich in the scratchy lottos, waltzes in like a prince to buy the necklace he's been eyeing in the window at that mall jewelry store for years • anyone who just stole $17,000 from a bank, and needs to wash the money ASAP, and the bank is across the street from the mall by the craziest of coincidences • rich eccentric who likes to help out the townsfolk has been shopping at stores in the area for decades, buying the most expensive things, quietly, and with no fanfare; the shop owners have responded by adding a pricey item here and there, hoping he'll buy it, which he always does, and over the years, the prices have gotten a little ridiculous, but he doesn't mind; this is his way to give back to the community he loves

I guess George has never heard of curiosity.

I had a big crush on sister Mary Robert when I was a kid. When she sang those "cherubim" and "seraphim" high notes, that was it for me. Then I had the rockin' version of Salve Regina stuck in my head for months. Wendy Makkena revealed later that she felt she needed more of a reason for her character to be so interested in Doloris, so she decided to play her as secretly, possibly even subconsciously attracted to her. No one on set knew she was playing her that way.

The zebra thing really works. When the bad guys got all the nuns pinned down, they couldn't find her. It was just a wash of black and white shapes.

All I could think with the goons in this film was "Hey boss, ain't that your wife, what which you had that wedding with?"

Trained jeweler here, I don't do it professionally but I have professional training and learned most of what I know in an active jewelry store that was considered fairly high end and was next to a grocery store and an arcade. Chances are, that necklace was not bought, it was made in house and is to show off what their jeweler can do for custom jobs. For some people, having a custom piece that no one else in the world has AND was designed specifically for their tastes is far more appealing than some out of catalogue mass produced piece, which is what most jewelry is even at the highest end. Tiffany's is likely making hundreds or thousands of that piece you see in the store unless they explicitly say it is a one off piece. It is often the small, hole in the wall shops that do custom jewelry. I have even seen rinky dink stores that exclusively do high end custom jewelry in like strip malls next to questionable Thai massage parlors and pawn shops.

Sister Act 2 is a nice and fun movie. The good thing is that it stands on it's own feet and tells a new story, not just the same story than the first one in another habit

hackbyte

About the Second movie .... yes it is definitely a must watch..... One can discuss if it is better or worse than the first one .. but it continues the story fairly and in just the right Sister Act way. ;)

I honestly don't think the idea that kids roaming the street of a Black neighborhood would decide to enter a church nearly as ridiculous as George is making it out to be. Church is quite important to the Black community, and imagine that you're in a group of teenagers living in the same neighborhood your entire life. You know of the local Catholic as this dull and dingy place with a horrible choir. Suddenly, you hear a different type of music playing from the building. A type of music that is usually associated with Black churches. Wouldn't you at least be slightly interested and want to take a peak at what is going on?

The first time I seen nuns outside of a church setting was 2 of them in line to watch Sister Act at the movies.

CaseyD

I think it's just ignorance of the importance of a good gospel choir in Black church culture.

The 2nd one has the legendary Lauryn Hill singing and it always brings chills to me listening to her.
