Really hope you two squeeze in ParaNorman for October. It is a perfect Halloween movie 🎃

Dom

And gone. Cool.

Christian Da Silva

When I saw this movie in theaters, not knowing anything about it, I really thought it was a Tim Burton's movie. Probably because of the animation, effects, dark story, etc. You guys should definitely react to Edward Scissorhands. That's what put Johnny Depp and Tim Burton on the map. Simone has probably seen it, but I think George would like it.

newhastings

Damn Henry Sellick really doesn’t get his credit 💔

Christian Da Silva

Adding to my previous comment. I'm watching your intro and you guys seem to also think this is also a Tim Burton's movie because it's from the people that made a Nightmare Before Christmas. It's wrong. The Nightmare Before Christmas was also directed by Henry Selick BUT Tim Burton was the producer. Their styles are pretty similar, so I guess that's where the confusion started.

Mark

Favorite spooky movie

Ihor Krasman

The only "Other mommy" we ever needed

newhastings

I will say Nightmare was basically Burton’s concept but he was busy with other projects so Sellick was hired. I think the overcorrection has kind of erased that Burton had actual creative input on Nightmare but yeah it sucks sellick keeps getting erased even with stuff that has nothing to do with burton

Jamie

Where's the love

DonDuracell

For me it's the kids version of "Pan's Labyrinth"

Patrick

I remember watching this when released, it was the first 3d film my local odeon showed

Friendly Neighborhood Xenos

My favorite "it's not a Christmas movie" Christmas movie lol I have to watch it every winter!

Friendly Neighborhood Xenos

I really miss Dakota Fanning and her movies, they were a huge part of my childhood! I love her sister's acting and films, as well. I remember watching Super8 (which y'all should DEFINITELY watch) for the first time and thinking how much they looked alike before the credits rolled lol. Wish her all the best, one of the only huge child actors that seemed to make it out of Hollywood-star childhood unscathed. So glad you two are doing this one! An underrated Dakota Fanning classic would be Dreamer, a family, feel-good movie that will make anyone cry!

WalrusWallace

I'm so happy you guys reacted to this one! It's one of my comfort watches

Friendly Neighborhood Xenos

Ngl, guys, Other Mother a baddie. Then and now. My little brain couldn't comprehend it 🤣

Matrim

Tim Burton had nothing to do with this. The director of Nightmare Before Christmas was Henry Selick.

Tom B

Can we get some recognition for Henry Selick who not only directed nightmare before Christmas but also Coraline! Seems like everyone thinks Tim Burton did both

djKENTO

Tim Burton did not direct Nightmare Before Christmas... he was barely there because he was shooting Batman Returns.

Monica Alarcon

Me: "please don't say Tim Burton please don't say Tim Burton" 10 seconds later: "dammit"

Jaaahn

the comments is nothing but people whos giving him recognition.

Elijah

Coraline scared the crap out of me as a kid but as an adult I ADORE this movie

Dragonhunter

I can't blame anyone it's called Tim Burtons Nightmare before Christmas so most would assume Tim Burton directed it.

Jaaahn

but its understandable why people who arent fans get confused since Nightmare Before was literally called "Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas" which began the confusion, it still says that on IMDB. then this movies poster says "From the creator of Nightmare Before Christmas" instead of the directors name.

Jaaahn

the comments will be nothing but "iTs nOt bUrToN". let me remind you that Nightmare Before was literally called "Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas" which began the confusion, it still says that on IMDB. then this movies poster says "From the creator of Nightmare Before Christmas" instead of the directors name. Its not that weird people get confused.

Matrim

Oh, I know. I don’t blame the general public given that Burton’s name was used to heavily market Nightmare. It’s just kind of a bummer he gets credit for it, and by extension things like this he had nothing to do with.

Matrim

He never does

Tom B

Good!

Reid Mclellan

You guys gotta watch Monster house now (2006) horror animation for kids but low key creepy like this and Steve Buscemi

Mikebdrx

Dude where’s my car?

Mastervodo

Whyyyyy do you need it?

Mastervodo

Since no one else has yet...... Sweeeeeet Coraliiiiine.......

Matthew Johnson

You guys really should watch movie Laika movies, they're pretty incredible. I'm looking forward to the new one that comes out at the end of this month.

JBK405

Regarding whether the story is "too scary" for kids or not, when Neil Gaiman was writing the original short story his publisher said that it was too scary for a children's story. Gaiman said to test it they should give what he already wrote to the publisher's daughter, and if SHE thought it wasn't too scary they'd publish it, and if not then they would drop it. The daughter said it wasn't too scary, so he finished it up and they published it. Several years later, after she had grown up a bit, the daughter confessed that it absolutely WAS too scary for her, but she desperately wanted to see how it ended. So she lied and said it wasn't scary. It's not spelled out in the movie, but Bobinsky is wearing a Liquidator's Medal, which was awarded to the people who performed cleanup after the Chernobyl disaster. His bizarre skin color isn't just "cartoon people are multicolored" but a symptom of his radiation exposure. That's also why he's always eating beets.

Laura Murray

I loved this growing up. I think Miss Spink and Forcible, the actresses, were based on a real lesbian couple, that the author knew. I always wanted to be like them, when I grow older, but with my cats.

Daniel Jones

George keeps asking why this movie is so weird, and I’m just thinking, “sorry to break it to you, but you might be getting old.”

OddThomas

There's a film called Cobweb that is live action and very clearly inspired by Coraline (but not as good)

Logan Kerlee

Wow! Had a great time watching this. :) First time viewing for me as well. Great stuff!

OddThomas

"Why's the mother so mean?" She was in a car accident & has a neck injury (possibly caused by Coraline), she's just moved house and has a deadline, so it kind of makes sense she's not in a great mood. For more Laika I recommend Kubo & the Two Strings or ParaNorman.

Thall

Weird observation: All the locks in all US movies open the opposite way from what I ever knew. Why does turning the key LEFT open the lock?! Makes no sense.

Thall

Ooooh so THIS is were Keith David starting voicing cats! Lovely Edit: Oh well, I mean, back in my day some kids didn't get traumatized and some did. Can't win 'em all! (i am coping)

Carlos H

ParaNorman would be fun

AJCham

I saw that look at 1:38:49, George! Well done on holding back the intrusive thoughts!

Simone's Coconut Squire

Jennifer Saunders is most famous for her show Ab Fab (Absolutely Fabulous). Before that she had a show called French and Saunders she co-starred in with Dawn French (who also co-wrote Ab Fab)

Simone's Coconut Squire

This has nothing to do with Tim Burton. This is Laika studios which is a unique studio that JUST does claymation. They’ve never been profitable, but the studio head is the son of a billionaire that keeps his son’s passion project funded.

Jamie

George has zero chill sometimes

PIG

I LOVE this movie. Can’t wait! For years it was tied with Spirited Away but I think this wins by a hair.

Justin Feldman

This movie was so incredible to see in 3D in the theaters. Just the right amount of 3D, not in your face, make you sick type. The mouse circus scene was so good.

Dorian Alfaro

I watched this as a kid with my sister and mom. It took us 2 days to watch and we didnt even finish it. The first time my sister kept crying. The second time we tried to watch again with my sister being held by mom this time. But then my mom cut it off when we got the part with the two ladies and we never fully watched it til we were older.

Runes N Raccoons

That said, Tim Burton did have a large hand in creating NBC, including the concept and the designs. But yes, he was not the director.

funky weapon

Never seen this before but one thing Gaiman is incredible at is hinting at the periphery. the entire story is from Coraline's perspective but if you pay attention you'll notice the elder lesbians who were likely burlesque dancers, the Chernobyl cleanup survivor, the fact that her parents are working themselves to death to pay the medical bills from the car accident, all kinds of "adult" things that a little kid wouldn't notice. it's really rather clever in that regard.

Jay Johnson

another Neil Gaiman story-made-into-film that I wish they'd do: Stardust.

Philipp Roensch

I only knew a bit of the childrens book, came out a bit to late for my interests. But seen this on a rerun in cinemas. Laika studios are truly to be commended for their quality in stop-motion animation. Excited to see Wildwood this year. This one realy captures a kids imagination well, including seeing many scary things for the first time.

Seahag

Hearing George bring up Watership Down again REALLY makes me hope you guys do Secret of NIMH soon, definitely has very similar vibes to that.

PIG

!!!!!!

Brandon

Great movie. Now let's all remember to separate the art from the artist (the author, not Laika). I was "that" kid that was always into the creepy, weird stuff. Kids like us were constantly having to push back on the "it's not for kids" argument that parents always use on us.

Matrim

“Can’t you just melt [the key] down?” George, she’s like 11. She doesn’t have access to a blast furnace, and she cannot simply walk into Mordor.

Gilthwixt

If you guys liked Coraline, please please please watch Fantastic Mr Fox and/or Paranorman. They're like the trifecta of Fall Stop Motion films.

MacGuffinStuff

So this is now one of my new favorites. I had never seen it, heard of it, sounded interesting, just never got around, but holy shit I really liked this and I guarantee I would have LOVED this fucked up movie as an 80s kid! I don't know what to tell you man, there was even a latch key in this movie (technically not but metaphorical, I would say yes), Neil and Henry have to be Gen X (aka Latchkey Generation) to know that kids SHOULD watch these movies. Hot take: Return to Oz was better than The Wizard of Oz. I said it, I stand on a sofa with a moose's head on that.

MacGuffinStuff

Just being on brand I loved the MacGuffins. A skeleton key to a portal, what looked like an ancient jade carved monacle to me, and the ghost eyes. Now I want to read the novel. AND, long story, but I have been trying to find homes for several kittens, unfortunately two were already taken to the shelter, I hope their okay and adopted etc. We as a group of tenants decided to keep two because they've already been catching mice which have been a problem. But it was decided the last two would also be taken to to the shelter if I can't find homes for them. I haven't but I'm too attached to them now. I'm going to argue for them staying , which would make it 4 dogs and 4 cats. And the last two are black cats, a male and a female, and I'm naming them Coraline and Keith, the feral guide has no name, but Keith is a cool cat.

REDR58

French and Saunders! French and Saunders! www.youtube.com/watch?v=Afkqbxc-0Sw

REDR58

Yeah. It's a stop motion movie featuring bizarre depictions of humans (enormous heads, out of proportion limbs and bodies) and distorted-looking objects of all kinds. It's a movie of its own world.

REDR58

Kind of like the title of "Bram Stoker's Dracula" (1992)which was directed by Francis Ford Coppola but of course written by Stoker. Burton had written a poem from which TNBC was based on. This movie could have easily been called, "Neil Gaiman's Coraline." Burton's poem from which TNBC was based on: https://the-nightmare-before-christmas.fandom.com/wiki/Poem There is *much* more about the making of TNBC that is worth looking up

Why Coraline Is Confused For A Tim Burton Movie (It's Complicated) By Helen Armitage & Tom Russell Updated Sep 8, 2024, 10:00 AM EDT Coraline is gothic in tone, stop-motion in style, and definitely weird, but did Tim Burton make Coraline? Since Coraline’s release, the movie has been mistakenly associated with The Nightmare Before Christmas creator and Corpse Bride director Tim Burton. It’s true that Coraline shares a lot of things in common with many Tim Burton movies like Frankenweenie — it’s a kid-friendly, stop-motion horror film with the gothic vibe Tim Burton has become synonymous with over his decades-long career. Despite those similarities, Tim Burton actually had nothing whatsoever to do with Coraline's production. Coraline wasn't directed by Tim Burton, but Henry Selick. The filmmaker behind Coraline is Wendell & Wild director Henry Selick, but this hasn't stopped the beloved adaptation of the Neil Gaiman comic from being falsely attributed to Burton by far too many people. Despite the fact Selick is clearly credited as the Coraline director, the misconception that Tim Burton directed it still persists. The issue appears to trace back to The Nightmare Before Christmas. The classic stop-motion spook-fest was released in 1994 and is based on a book by Burton. Tim Burton didn't direct Coraline, but sadly for the legacy of the phenomenal Henry Selick, the comparisons between them don't stop there. It's unfortunate that so many people mistakenly thinks that Tim Burton directed Coraline, and it must be frustrating for the Coraline director to have his movies attributed to Burton so frequently. Like Coraline, many people don't know Tim Burton didn't direct Nightmare Before Christmas. Jack Skellington's holiday escapades were, rather ironically, also helmed by Coraline director Henry Selick (in his feature filmmaking debut, no less). So, when posters for Coraline bore a tagline proclaiming that the movie was “from the director of The Nightmare Before Christmas,” many wrongly believed this was referring to Tim Burton. The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline aren’t the only Henry Selick movies plagued by the misconception, either. When Selick released his second feature, James And The Giant Peach, in 1996, it too was mistakenly assumed to be a Burton-helmed movie, even though his only involvement with the Roald Dahl adaptation was as a producer. Given how creepy the 1996 movie adaptation is and how unique the animation is, audiences once again wrongly attributed the film to Tim Burton... * * * * * Read the rest at the link: https://screenrant.com/so-is-coraline-a-tim-burton-movie-complicated/

Neil Gaiman. Blech. Coraline is voiced by Dakota Fanning. Teri Hatcher, who you saw as the uncredited USS Enterprise Transporter operator in the 2nd season TNG episode “The Outrageous Okana,” voiced the mom, Melinda and The Beldam (bedlam indeed!)/The Other Mother. Here is Hatcher in that TNG episode: www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxVFUTIcMCU John Hodgman played the dad, Charlie and The Other Father. *No one else* recognized the voice of John Linnell of They Might Be Giants as the singing voice for Charlie??? C'mon, guys, I know there are some old heads here! Here is Linnell singing in They Might Be Giants' "Birdhouse in Your Soul": www.youtube.com/watch?v=vn_or9gEB6g I have an unreasonable dislike of buttons. Hate the way they look. And "toque," that word irrationally disturbs me. How did you guys not immediately mention the similarity to “Being John Malkovich” with the little door and the irregular tunnel inside when Coraline goes into her bedroom tiny door and tunnel??? For shame! Why does Coraline have a toy World War I-ish era tank on the floor of her room? Later in the Other world a toy giraffe is in the then-turretless tank. Poison Oak grows as a vine or shrub and the leaves resemble that of Oak trees: https://www.chop.edu/news/health-tip/recognizing-poison-ivy-oak-and-sumac Fun reaction! No go watch "Kubo and The Two Strings" (2016). Edited for too many typos. Damn iOS!!!

MacGuffinStuff

Keith just right now playing with a cricket.

MacGuffinStuff

Coraline venturing into the garage, the dogs are VERY curious about the cats, apart from Chalino Sánchez, our Chihuahua Pug, they have not formally met the rest of the pack, who are savages and rescues all. This will be interesting.

REDR58

Oh, one more thing, for as bizarre as this movie looks, the cars seen in the movie (a 1994 Jeep Wrangler, a 2001-2006 MINI Cooper, a 1989 Mitsubishi Fuso FE and a 2006 Volkswagen New Beetle, among a few others) are quite realistic-looking, They are relatively large, custom-made models: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/2g6h4_afSqU

Crap Bag - first name Crap last name Bag

Me and my first wife saw this when it came out in 3D which was really amazing because they did such a good job with depth perception and making the world come alive. I later showed this to my daughter when she was pretty young and she absolutely loved it but we’re also both really big into horror.

gfixler

The name always feels weird to me, because I had a goth girl friend in college, years before this film, named Caroline Jones.

Monica Alarcon

This has nothing to do with claymation as that is a process that involves plasticine and other malleable materials. This was done with posable puppets with interchangeable heads...

Bstan45

I second the "blech." So disappointing.

Flerb

Something REALLY important about this movie that gets lost and forgotten, it was filmed in 3D, the first feature length 3D stop motion movie. Seeing it in 3D at the theater made my jaw drop. Many little things just don't translate to the flat screen, like the needle sweeping over the theater seats in front of you during the intro, or looking through glass with rain streaking down, or the vertigo feeling of the tunnel between worlds as it recedes away. There's a depth flat out missing (pun sorry) which brought an enhanced realism and unease to the story.

Simone's Coconut Squire

I wouldn’t say NOTHING as they would both be stop motion animation techniques and the medium of the models being the difference, but thank you for clarification.

Hansy

Hmm. It's asking me to log in now even though I am(?)

Els

Nothing to do with Coraline but now that you've seen 2001: A Space Odyssey (greatest science fiction movie of the 60's) and are deep into Star Trek, you ought to round things out by watching FORBIDDEN PLANET (greatest science fiction movie of the 50's and a clear inspiration for Star Trek).

Holdenk

Yall should watch Paranorman next!

Angela D. Mitchell

I don't currently watch or consume anything NG does (for obvious reasons since the revelations about him as a serial SA-er), but since watching your reaction won't profit him in any way, I checked it out. Beyond that... I don't really love this, although I applaud Sellick for his gorgeous animation. It's ironic that you picked this because it's a short movie, because good lord, it felt interminable to me. I thought it would never end. My main issue is that both worlds are so ugly and grim looking, and everyone feels vaguely unpleasant and icky, whether in the real world or "Other" world. They aren't different enough. I would have liked Coraline's real world to have felt subtly more green and real -- it's Oregon, after all! But instead, it just looks like a creepy, dirty place that's vaguely evocative of Beetlejuice, but with less charm. I also thought the sequences in the Other world go on for way too long and become tedious. Aren't they supposed to be charming? Instead, why are we watching an old woman who's basically naked, wearing barely-there mermaid pasties on her giant boobage? Did they HAVE to go there? It just felt so gross to me in a kid's movie because it's SO over the top. I do think the voice work is terrific, and the score is really beautiful. I can see the work that went into the animation, but I dislike the story and think the look of the film is just kind of ugly and depressing. And Coraline is a perfectly nice name. It's not that crazy -- the name "Coral" for instance is a fairly popular name going back a century or two -- so I don't get George's outrage over it! :D

gfixler

Me: Yay, they're doing a movie that fits perfectly with my current state, surrounded by Halloween decorations and lighting! I guess George is finally starting to appreciate the magic of Spooky Season 🧡 George: Shit got all fucky, so we're just doing some random whatever I grabbed from the list that's short so we at least do something today. Me: That's the spirit.

Reece Chapford

Are you guys going to watch Vertigo or what?
