The Thumbnail we all didn't know we needed. I kinda hate it! 😂

Mike FromOz

You outdo yourselves with the thumbnails, every time 😂 Settling in with dinner, looking forward to watching this reaction!

TheLeftPecOfTheLord

I love this crazy dive into Joe Dante’s mind so much. As much a satire of the original as it is a sequel, it takes everything that makes the original work and dials it up to 15. I wish we could’ve got 10 more of these

OddThomas

I would 100% watch you guys react to the Hobbit movies and rip them to shreds, lol

Gizmo_Mogwai_

That thumbnail! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Kyle B

This movie is fun, but in no sense civilized

Matt88g

Mr Futterman is played by Dick Miller who is friends with Joe Dante and is in most of his films, that’s why he was unkilled for this film

SuPaTiLt

The delivery guy who was whistling early in the movie is a young Tuco Salamanca

Opti_Frog

Nothing about this movie works for me, except the elevator alarm.

Morion Williams

Forkbeard83

George! That thumbnail is cruel. Yes, I'm typing this after i fell of my chair laughing, but still...

Patrick

Ohh, this is a post-work treat to go along with a post-work smoke. Roll on 3pm.

Chris

PLEASE WATCH MIRRORS

OddThomas

For more Phoebe Cates: Drop Dead Fred. Joe Dante: Innerspace (also with Robert Picardo), Small Soldiers. Robert Prosky: John Carpenter's Christine. Christopher Lee: Sleepy Hollow. John Astin: The Frighteners.

Jay

The "giant green leafy thing" is a seed pod from Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Billy and Gizmo watched it on TV in the first one.

Nabikon

Wonder if SoftWave therapy would be better for the shoulder compared to Shockwave. Helped my tailbone injury that I'd been dealing with for 25 years.

ThetaSigmaTheOriginal

RE sports. I'm the same way. I think I'm the only person in Scotland who doesn't care for football (or other sports). It's pretty wild seeing people go crazy over something so superficial. As long as people are enjoying themselves, that's great. But there's genuine hooliganism here in Scotland, sometimes, between rival football (soccer) teams. And it's just bizarre to me. I think George is right, it's tribalism and one of the ways it's expressed is through sports.

Where_Were_You_When_The_Westfold_Fell

There's one quotes that comes to my mind, when it comes to this movie. "I know writers who use subtext, and they're all cowards."

Captain Kermit

Finally! We got some real cinema on this channel

John

It's interesting hearing about Simone's difficulties with her doctor even though Canadian healthcare is known to be good. A streamer called NorthernLion who is also Canadian had many difficulties getting help with bowel issues that lasted a month because his doctor didn't believe how bad it was and it turned out he had simultaneous salmonella and campylobacter.

Mo's Not Mortal

I feel like I've seen this one passively. I remember the ending, the one gremlin in a red dress, and that's it. Probably caught it on TV one day or something years ago.

Jaaahn

a good system doenst automatically mean good doctors only. each doctor is an individual person and just like every individual person, some are assholes. more over, people only share horror stories when it comes to medical events in their lives. no one ever gets on camera and say "i went to the doctors, it was fine and nothing extraordinary happened." so for every bad experience shared by someone on camera, theres millions who just had a normal time and isnt broadcasting it.

John

Completely agree, I think they've both been failed by their doctors on these occasions and it's sad to see!

N Kingham

When this came out, we saw this in one of the cinemas with the new surround sound system. At the film break, they dropped all the audio channels except for the rear one, so the only sound was Gremlin laughter coming from the projectionist booth. The *entire* audience, all of them stopped, turned and looked up at booth going "What the hell" I always thought if you could get the audience so invested in such a strange movie, that they all stopped watching it you had achieved everything you ever wanted to do as a director.

Jaaahn

yeah, and Simone lives in like a super rural place right? im guessing her options are very very limited then. purely guessing but i would imagine good doctors gravitate towards cities, just for the access of better funding, research, opportunities..etc. leaving less than desirable or less ambitious at the very least doctors in rural communities.

nigel Macbug

I Ilke the chaos and the finger to film critics, film studios and pedants of the gremlin spawning rules

SuPaTiLt

Leonard Maltin and Joe Dante are friends. So even though he gave the first one a bad review, he was game to do the meta critic scene.

Mimic 19

I remember sleeping on the opposite end of my Grandma's Queen sized bed to where my head was right next to the box T.V., and suddenly I heard the T.V.s' DVD slot slide open, and then closed. All of a sudden, the Gremlins 2 theme was playing, and I opened my eyes to the main menu of this movies was on. She knew turning the movie on would wake me up. Man I miss those days, I miss my Grandma. 💚 💜

Andrew

"Do you watch sports?" No, but let me give you my entire medical history. 😂

Gizmo_Mogwai_

Greatest movie ever. Can't wait for the 3rd movie

Will Sofer

“Tight! Tight, tight, tight.”

Jeff K.

I don’t think I’ve watched this movie in about 25 years and holy shit, I had forgotten just how batshit crazy it is. Also George - Leonard Maltin has always been known as one of the rare critics who has a great sense of humor about himself and is never above self-deprecation. He was also an occasional guest cameo on Mystery Science Theater 3000 so he’s OK in my book.

Tom Hess

@George "people don't watch reactions to movies they've never seen" Not true. I've watched plenty of movies for the first time on Cinebinge, and I bet I'm not the only one. You guys made me discover Frieren, the Mission Impossible saga, Cowboy Bebop. I like it. It's like going to the cinema with a couple of friends... who you can't talk to.

Tom B

This might be my new favorite thumbnail!!

Twiska Brand

I'm pretty sure the actor who played the delivery guy is the same actor who plays Tuco in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, and that's where you recognise him from.

Patrick

Robert Picardo fucking rules. Glad Simone immediately clocked him. Great in Inner space as the Cowboy too. Billy jumping around in his chair at his desk to get the lights to turn on reminds me of being in my break workroom and the lights going off if in motionless for too long. And lastly, you guys have to watch the Key & Peele Gremlins sketch

TyWorth

Having rewatched them both recently, this definitely was an influence on Everything Everywhere All at Once, and I mean that as the highest compliment.

Patrick

I'm jealous you got to watch it again after so long

Patrick

In what kind of way? The comedy?

parker469a

I feel like the only people that cares about sports are people betting on the outcome of their teams. In other words, only gambling addicts care about sports.

Frank

Who was one of your favorites from Golden State, Simone? You can't say that and then not refer to who it is, lol. Klay Thompson is the main guy I can think of. It sucks that the grizzlies moved from Vancouver, or else that could have been your team. The old school Vancouver Grizzlies logo is one of my favorite sports logos ever haha

Patrick

This fucked up skyscraper is a Musk wet-dream

Joel

The building was Tesla ambitions with a Temu budget

Frank

Simone def overdosed on her cold medicine........."WOAAAHHHH did you see that boat. Hey George did you see that boat!?!?!?!" Lol gonna be a fun one

WayneC

Though she would have seen his name in the opening credits. Picardo, btw.

John

Yeah I believe she's mentioned living rurally in the past, I think you're making the right guess there for sure about the quality ending up different in the cities as a result of all that.

parker469a

Dayquil is not enough to cause Simone's lack of ability to explain herself. Is it the pot, or has she always been this unable to find any words to describe her ideas? She does understand that first word you want to say but can't remember doesn't have to be the only word to describe something. You can use less accurate words and then build towards the idea that you are describing in less time than staying stuck on a single "perfect" word.

Patrick

Cursed autocorrect. Yeah look back they didn't notice the credits.

OddThomas

You know who would've been perfect for the Smart Gremlin voice? Kelsey Grammar.

Jaaahn

right because drugs all work identically to everyone, it cant just be that different people have different results with medication. whatever you personally experienced must be the way it is for every single person right? oh and, for someone who so openly talks about smoking weed in a country thats fully legalized, she chose THIS instance to not disclose it for some reason 🙄 but hey, its great you decided to bring up 'inability to find any words to describe her idea', we're all fucking thrilled you put it that way because even if that were the case, im sure she now just feels wonderful about herself after you put it that way.

Patrick

Oh shit, I completely forgot that's John Astin who was the original Gomez Addams playing the janitor.

Patrick

That's amazing.

Haye Zeus

Now THIS is a movie. Haha. This was actually my first movie I saw in the theatres. And when the Gremlins start fucking with the movie projector, I so thought they had gremlins in the booth with them. In my mind I thought all movies would be like this whenever I went to the theatre.

Tom Hess

To answer Simone's question, I watched this film in theaters when I was 7, I think. I have no personal memory of it, but my parents have an anecdote: When the film gets interrupted, a 10 year old kid right next to us asked his parents "shouldn't we help the projectionist ? He's being attacked !"

J

One of the few times the sequel blows away the original!

Śéáń

Then Hank shows up leading the swat team in the end

gfixler

I was certain for like a year now that Simone had two gay dads 😆 And I also have a dad and stepdad, not together. I also have two half-brothers on my dad's side, and I call them my brother.

gfixler

Can't believe people don't watch reactions here to movies they haven't seen. It's probably 20% or fewer movies here that I've seen. You've introduced me to a ton of films I missed.

gfixler

Has Simone tried the thing where they plunge her in a tank of water, stab her with a bunch of giant needles, and coat her bones with adamantium? That may help the shoulder.

grischa

You should really watch "Key & Peele - "Gremlins 2" Brainstorm - Uncensored" on youtube.

Frank

Y'all should do a reaction where you only talk in the most stereotypical, obnoxious Canadian accent. Simone could pull it off, but would like to see George's take lol

REDR58

I love watching baseball and football and basketball and have no interest in betting on sports. I can do it very easily online. And then there is a physical casino less than 20 minutes away from me. I’ve never stepped foot in at once.

REDR58

Seconded. I’ve seen a whole bunch of movies on here I would’ve not have seen otherwise. And I also watch their reactions more than once!

REDR58

In fact, I have never seen Gremlins 2 before but I’ll watch it on here later today!

Icarius

The perfect movie for Simone to watch high on cold medicine 😆 You'll be elated to see that a few years ago, Robert Picardo tweeted out this photo of himself:

REDR58

I will rant and rave at the TV screen while I’m watching my sports teams lose or win, depending on the situation, but then after it’s over, I forgot about it.

ThetaSigmaTheOriginal

Ironically, he did exactly the same thing the year after this, in T2.

Matt88g

In the vhs release the tape breaks into static and the gremlins have a shoot out with John Wayne

Daniel Jones

After Gremlins (1984) became such a surprise success, Warner Bros. immediately wanted a sequel, but director Joe Dante had had enough Gremlins for a while and declined. Work on this movie proceeded without him, as the studio approached various directors and writers. Storylines considered included sending the gremlins to cities like Las Vegas or even the planet Mars. After these ideas fell through, the studio finally asked Dante again, who agreed on the condition that he be allowed to do anything he wanted. He also received a bigger budget. In the DVD commentaries for Gremlins (1984) and this movie, Dante stated that he felt that this movie was a case of waiting too long to capitalize on the success of Gremlins (1984), which hurt this movie's chances of success.

gfixler

A company I worked at also had timed lights, and I did a long poop once, the last few minutes of which were in pitch black darkness. 😠

Raven Blackrose

Correction: EVERY Joe Dante film. You gotta appreciate the loyalty

gfixler

Who is Sean Astin's dad (well, one of 4 of them, and not 4 gay dads), and that's our second LotR connection in this movie.

Raven Blackrose

I gotta say, A Little Goofy off cold medecine is the best way to watch this movie. Love how much Joe Dante did not want to do this, until he got full control and then went fuckin' nuts, basically pranking the studio.

Logan Nelson

We got this before Tokyo Drift?!?! The travesty lol... Awesome little 80's flick tho

Scott CineRam

Thanks for sharing the link, I've never seen it!

Psyclopath

I saw it in theaters back when I lived in Montréal, Quebec. I was about 11, and I couldn’t follow the plot because the entire theater went nuts over every new Gremlin reveal. The Hulk Hogan bit is the part I remember most vividly, as things got extremely chaotic inside the theater. Half the audience consisted of kids my age or younger, and some even cried out loud during the Spider-Gremlin reveal. About a year or two later, I went to see Hulk Hogan face The Undertaker live.

Scott CineRam

I've also seen him in "Training Day" and "Alien Resurrection"

funky weapon

I think the inclusion of Daffy and Bugs in the WB opening was a pretty big hint for the cartoonish tone this movie had. it's a complete fever dream and it's a shame it didn't get the recognition it deserved at the box office. the Gremlins taking over the projector booth is still one of the best gags I've seen in a movie and I wish I could've seen that in the theatre. The puppetry is also incredible. it's not that the puppets are realistic, but they have the same animated cartoon feel as old Looney Tunes do. Gizmo especially is a work of art with how articulated and expressive he is. I have no idea how they'll do a third movie without Joe Dante. would be kind of funny if Gremlins 3 was a satire of reboots and requels. I have no real trivia to add except that for much of my life I thought Grandpa Fred was actually the Grandpa from the Munsters TV show.

streaky

It isn't the first time George has seen Robert Picardo in anything because he's in Total Recall of course :p I'm actually writing an essay on that one character that Simone is referring too, thinking about it becoming a video essay/retrospective because of how frighteningly applicable it is right now..

Amelie W

Hard to believe this was made 36 years ago huh. The movie assumes a level of information processing and media literacy from the audience comparable to like, 30 Rock. And it assumes you know who "Daniel R Clamp" is meant to make fun of 26 years before he got into politics.

Dan

I'm sure it's very rare for anyone to watch a movie here for the first time. Cinebinge, by providing reaction and review, are making a transformative work and certainly not depriving the original IP owners of any revenue.

Icarius

RARELY, but usually when I've been meaning to watch something anyway and a full uncut reaction pops up. I just watched Weird: The Al Yankovic story for the first time here.

Jeb Manning

I love this one. It's crazy, and I love its self-awareness to make fun of the first movie. I also love that they add another aspect of the supernatural to the Gremlins: reincarnation. According to director Joe Dante, Mohawk in this movie is actually Stripe, the main Gremlin from the first movie reincarnated. That's why he tortures Gizmo. Mohawk remembers Gizmo killing him when he was Stripe.

Raven Blackrose

Asking if this is the "most unhinged movie" 2 seconds before Hulk Hogan hadme cracking up.

Icarius

Clamp is a little bit Trump (whose second wife was named Marla) but he's mostly Ted Turner with his cable tv network. He's responsible for the "end of the world" pre-taped segment, and also colorized several black and white movies until there was enourmous backlash over it. The building announcer even says "Casablanca, now in color with a new, happier ending!" and Fred says he can't air Frankenstein because "Mr. Clamp only likes things in color."

Icarius

But for the [most] Phoebe Cates, Fast Times at Ridgemont High

Jeb Manning

You've gotta do more Joe Dante on this channel. He's such an interesting director with a hugely varied career. Some of his essential movies: -Piranha (1978) -The Howling (1981) -Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983) -Explorers (1985) -Innerspace (1987) -Matinee (1993) -Small Soldiers (1998) -Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003)

Matthew Wabals

Simone :This is the most unhinged movie ever ( me : Hulk hogan in 3.2.1 ) and i did see this in the theater and some guy in front of us did get up to get the manager . I saw it two more times just to see people react to the film break

Screamed at by cat

Blink and you'll miss it appearance of Raymond Cruz as the messenger.

PG Modehouse

Y'all have seen the Key and Peele sketch, right?

Brian's Dog

Loved the reaction. Over my lifetime watches of these two movies, this is now my favorite of the two. There is just so many fun references to like. Still love them both though.

streaky

Oh, also, I might not have seen that movie in like 30 years and didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did.

REDR58

George, if you haven't already done so, maybe make a poll asking how many people here only watch reactions for movies they have already seen. In my case, of the last 40 movies you've watched on here (not including TV/Anime), 28 of them were first-time watches for me. There are a whole mess of movies I never saw growing up or not until many years later. For example, I had never seen "Jaws" until 2016 (when I bought the Blu-ray), despite it coming out in 1975, a year after I was born. I never saw E.T. until around 2023, despite being it being an enormous movie release during my childhood. My family just didn't go to very many movies when I was growing up and we had no access other Cable TV until the mid-to late 1980s. I never saw the "Final Destination" series until watching it here, despite relatively easy access for me to do so in the years each of those movies came out. Never saw *any* of The Sopranos series or The Wire when originally released as I didn't have HBO and there was no easy way to watch those at the time. So that was another first time watch here for me. I didn't see any of the Rocky series until about 10 years ago, despite it being of large cultural significance to Philadelphia and the surrounding area (where I grew up and have lived all my life). I've seen very few Disney/Pixar animated movies that you guys haven't watched here. I've seen almost no horror movies of any kind until I watched them here. Never saw Friday the 13th, Halloween, The Exorcist, Poltergeist, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, etc, until watching them here. Though my family had a VHS recorder growing up, we rarely bought movies (as they were *very* expensive to buy new) and I never really rented movies until I was in high school in the early 1990s. Most of what we used the VCR was for recording over-the-air TV (like NBC, ABC, CBS, PBS and a few UHF stations back then). I only really regularly started watching movies during the late 1990s when DVD became available and I started buying up cheap used DVDs and later Blu-ray. I've been collecting Blu-ray since around 2010 and 4K for the last several years and currently have about 1200 unique Blu-ray/4K titles in my collection and maybe 500 DVDs that get upgraded to Blu-ray when available (not all movies released on DVD are released on Blu-ray). I've watched them all at least once, most several times. Other than most of the Anime and a handful of movies, I watch all of your full-length reactions. I'd have to go through all of it to be sure, but estimate that I've only seen about 30-40% of the movies that you and Simone watch here and so the majority of them are first-time watches for me.

Brian's Dog

You're now qualified to go watch the Key & Peele Gremlins 2 Brainstorm skit on youtube.

rictus grin

love the TOS sound effect on the doors

Opti_Frog

Well, yes, i don't think it's funny. But the biggest issue is that it feels like they made The Naked Gun the sequel to Die Hard. It's tonally and stylistically too far removed from the original film.

Monica Alarcon

No, that's not Seth Meyer's father, that's Lex Luthor's father...

TexasNight

Pretty sure the green "POD" that Christopher Lee was carrying was one of the PODs from the original "Body Snatchers" movie...

Gare Bear Stare Mon Dairy Air

I saw this in the theatre as a 10 year old and it scared t he sh*t out of me when the film burnt out and broke the 4th wall. And then I laughed my ass off. If I recall, it went into a John Wayne movie first and had an extended fourth wall cut. Fantastic memory for the target audience at the time.

DasBigUn

I have to ask this: Simon, why not get a doctor with better "customer service" instead of sticking with "I-Went-Too-Medical-School-You-Skinny-Bitch-How-Dare-You-Question-MY-AUTHOATY" doctor you have?

Awesome80s

The "Is it safe" dentist line is a ref to "Marathon Man", a great film and one of Hoffman's best movie.

Brandon

I haven't actually counted, but I wouldn't be surprised if I've seen more than 25 movies for the first time as a member here. That includes older movies and recent movies that I missed in theatres.

Brandon

As a Canuck, I can confirm that this link has been made unavailable in Canada by Comedy Central. 🤣

Brandon

*ahem* You forgot 'The 'Burbs' (1989). 😉

Jeb Manning

To be honest, I couldn't remember if they'd done that one or not.

Brandon

https://youtu.be/RCZlFXxKXSE When they released this movie on home video, they actually released it with an alternate scene where the Gremlins "take over" the film. Instead of messing with film reels, they are messing with the viewer's TV and VCR.

REDR58

They have not and it’s a fantastic for them to watch, particularly around this time of year.

REDR58

And, as you might expect, there’s a Simpsons reference to/joke (S3E16: Bart the Lover) about the colorization of old movies: https://comb.io/TVPkAM

REDR58

Adoptive father.

Brandon

The repair man that gets Gizmo wet is played by John Astin - the original Gomez Addams from the 'Addams Family' TV series in the 60's. He's also the adoptive father of Sean Astin, so the Lord of the Rings connections never cease.

Kris King

When I saw this in cinema the projectionist misaligned the reel for the adverts and trailers before the movie itself, loading it on the wrong perforations resulting in a black bar 1/3rd of the way down the screen, with the top of the image at the bottom and the bottom at the top. By the time the movie started he'd spotted his mistake and made sure the movie was loaded correctly, but by the time the breakdown occurs in the film where the gremlins take over the projection booth there was an loud groan (and a few "Oh, FFS!") from the entire audience - for a few seconds we *genuinely* thought the projectionist had screwed up again, so that scene hits extra hard for me.

gfixler

Loved that show as a kid. Always wanted a bed I could fold closed instead of having to make it.

Monica Alarcon

"that was a nice 4th wall break" well George hold on to your butt!! You ain't seen. Nothing yet!!! When I watched this in theaters the film breaking was a sorts regular thing so it was annoying at first, then it got crazy!! It was a nice touch.... Early rental VHS (not sure if DVD too) had an alternate scene appropriate for television instead of movie theaters. It's on YouTube if you wanna watch it

pjfry

John Glover was amazing in Smallville

akaTheBAY-AY-RON

I'm in the opening credits and remembered this little gem from Key & Peele. The skit is about the writers room when they were initially brainstorming ideas for Gremlins 2. It's definitely not based on real events but if you told me "no, that's actually what happened in the writers room" I would 100% believe it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x01l_jMhjVM

nossieboy

Drop Dead Fred I've recommended it a few times. I hope they put it into the votes one day!

Aaron Gunstone

I liked the Hobbit movies as little as you - but to my great surprise, there are fanedits that manage to make a really solid result from all that raw material. The one I really liked was the m4 "book edit" from https://m4studios.github.io/hobbit-book-edit/ This cuts about half of the runtime, leaving a single long film (about the same as one of the LotR extended editions), removes all the crud that doesn't fit - well, read what they say about it, they did a ton of good stuff with it. I showed it to my kids, and I was *happy* with it. It was a genuinely good movie adaptation of The Hobbit, which is really all you could ask for. I recommend giving it a try.

SbE

Also Isiah Whitlock jr. aka Clay Davis from the Wire as the fireman interrupted by Futterman. Sheiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit. And according to the credits, Dean Norris aka Hank Schrader as the swat team leader. So many great actors in the tiniest of roles in this unhinged feverdream of a movie

Kinokind

And speaking of "Inner Space," did you notice that one of the tenants in the building (according to a sign) was Vectorscope Labs?

REDR58

I have mixed feelings about The Hobbit movies. I think all of the dwarves are fun and the actors do a great job, in particular Ken Stott as Balin. He is wonderful in the role, especially in his interactions with Bilbo. The entire Smaug vs Bilbo sequences are almost worth a movie in themselves. But there is just far too much silliness.

Kinokind

Every time I see this I find more details I missed. There are more cameos and in-jokes than can be counted. What happened was that "Gremlins" was so successful that the studio pestered Joe Dante to make a sequel for years, but he wasn't interested. Eventually, the studio was so desperate that they offered him a pile of money and carte blanch over the film's contents. God help them. They had no idea what he was doing, so he gleefully made a live action cartoon, with as many gags as he and others could think of. It became a running gag among the staff that you'd better not suggest some wacky joke, or he might do it. That big pod thing Christopher Lee is holding is a seed pod from "Invasion of the Body Snatchers." Case in point. I have seen the CNN "End of the World" tape. It might be on Youtube. It's kind of horrifying, not for what it says, but for what it implies.

Jay

George listing iconic Christopher Lee performances and not mentioning Lord Summerisle from The Wicker Man kinda hurts:( The man himself reckons that was his best movie.

REDR58

That's great!

REDR58

Simone that body of water in front of the old World Trade Center Twin Towers isn’t a lake, it’s the Hudson River, and the footage is sped up. It’s also footage that was previously used in the movie Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987) (deleted bit about voice controlled elevators. Oops. Not as real as I thought) Clamp is played by John Glover (he has no children) and he was in Scrooged: https://youtu.be/PTOV_R9kzz4?is=W9kALE1tWZFQ9otN Henry Gibson, who was in The Blues Brothers as the Head Nazi and the priest in The Wedding Crashers has the cameo as the worker fired via TV. Phoebe Cates (Kate) today is retired from acting and has been married to Kevin Kline (A Fish Called Wanda) since 1989. She only made 15 movies and a few TV movies and a miniseries. She founded the store “The Blue Tree” in the Upper East Side of New York in 2005: https://bluetreeny.bigcartel.com/about https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcQ4Z89SC7w Robert Prosky (Grandpa Fred, reporting from inside the building) had a late start his movie career. He was born in 1930 in the Manayunk neighborhood of Philadelphia (my grandparents home was in Manayunk for many years) and his first movie was in 1978. He was also in Last Action Hero and Mrs. Doubtfire. George, Billy likely found that red fire axe in the basement of the building. They are usually stored near fire extinguishers. WHERE'S THE KEY & PEELE REACTION!!!???

MacGuffinStuff

I watched this in the theater, I was 12, maybe 13, all I remember that I loved the first one, still one of my favorite Christmas movies, and this was hilarious. And it kind of fit that evolving Gen X sensibility, conscious of itself as a marketing demographic, I don't remember thinking that at the time but maybe a few years later. But JOE DANTE, for real you guys need to watch ALL of his movies, or at least all the ones I can think of at the moment. He is one of the best at Horror/Comedy, or really Comedy/Horror, and like the best directors he likes to hire the same actors like Robert Picardo, he's so funny in INNERSPACE. But Joe Dante directed: THE HOWLING (in the scene where Billy and Phoebe Cates are walking to work they pass a movie theater, the movie playing is The Howling XI, it did have a lot of sequels and Robert Picardo was in that too) INNERSPACE, I'll keep this Martin Short, that's all I need to say, you'll love it. SMALL SOLDIERS, awesome. THE 'BURBS, classic Tom Hanks.

MacGuffinStuff

My theory about the Mogwai is slightly dark maybe? GIZMO is the first and last, so far. The other Mogwai who come from They(?), are different aspects of Them, the Original Mogwai, Gizmo is the Good one, and Their more dark personality traits are manifested, birthed whenever the multiplication happens, it's just the bad traits. And you notice they live to torture the original but they never kill Gizmo, because they know that even if they all die, again, if Gizmo survives, there's another chance And, I think they have Gizmo's memories, that's why they have knowledge immediately, which makes them more dangerous every iteration, because they learn from their collective mistakes. GIZMO might be a curse of sorts, sent to be the innocent means of humanity's inevitable destruction because we can't follow simple fucking rules 🤣

MacGuffinStuff

Also holy shit, Breaking Bad PREunion! Tuco and Hank! Raymond Cruz (Tuco, was the delivery guy, of course he whistles, such a Mexican thing to do too, I do it too) and, Dean Norris (Hank is somehow somewhere in every weird sci-fi-ish cool movie) I knew that was him, at the end he shoots a random dying Gremlin.

djKENTO

Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment owns the rights to the idea of Gremlins and WB owns the rights to TV and film. Amblin never licenses anything for a cross over so no there's no Gremlins/Aliens cross over comic or any other official media.

Hey George, you know Christopher Lee from his post Lord of the Rings reputation... Christopher Lee spent DECADES making horror schlock. Like really genuinely god awful GARBAGE movies. He's in a mid 90s Police Academy movie that stinks to high heaven. He's in The Howling II, a truly terrible werewolf movie. And he played Dracula in one of the cheapest worst versions of Dracula. This is actually a HUGE STEP UP from some of the work he was doing around that time. And playing a mad scientist is in some chaotic mess is very on brand. and yeah not only does Rule 34 of the FemGrem or "Femlin" but the adult star Little Puck did a video where she spent HOURS on high end prosthetic make up and body paint to shoot it in live action... so it's not just drawings. Good call on referencing The Thing with the Spider-Gremlin. Doug Beswick, the same special effects artist made both the spider-head from The Thing and the spider-gremlin.

You guys finally met Greta. When I first saw her I did the same face as you two did.

Mike MacColin

Robert Picardo appeared in most Joe Dante movies, including "Explorers" (I know. Most people forget that it was a Joe Dante movie.)

Mike MacColin

BTW. That tradition tegarding a Best Man was new to me - I didn't know they had to sword fight. But from what I've read, the Best Man's purpose is to help the groom abduct a suitable bride from the next village - which might involve some sword fighting, come to think of it... And yes, this can be done by a woman, too. Sword fighting is not only about strength, it involves speed, agility and precision as well. Just think of Inara in the "Shindigh" episode of Firefly!

Tymothi Loving

I was 12 when this came out. I saw it in the theater, and as an over-caffeinated tween, it was the one of the funniest things I'd ever seen up to that point.

megamoo chilli

OMG the bit where Phoebe Cates launches into her sad history monologue made me laugh so hard. Brilliant self aware parody sequel.

sb

But what if the creature ate food at 11:59 below the equator with 100% humidity during daylight savings on a flight going west? (Just watch the damn movie George). 😄

Jomero

The Lord of the Rings movies is what everyone thinks their D&D campaign is like. The Hobbit movies is what their D&D campaign is actually like. For that reason, I still kind of like them.

Guy Gordon

One of my favorites and one of the most underappreciated sequels. Saw it something like a half dozen times in the theater when it first came out. Probably helps that I was 14 at the time. Seen it plenty of times since. I think my favorite thing is all the PA announcements. The fire one is classic. "Enact the age-old drama of self-preservation" :)

sb

Simone asked if anyone saw this in theaters. Yes, absolutely when I was a kid. The gremlins behind the screen threw everyone off and then the Hulk Hogan reveal made everyone laugh and eventually cheer when the film played again.

DanielK

Agreed, i watch plenty of movies and tv shows here I hadn’t watched before

Chris Kimmel

The guy dressed up as Dracula was also in the last action hero as the guy that shows the movies at the theater and gave the kid the ticket

Daniel Bjork

Yall have to watch the Key and Peele skit on gremlins 2

1+ The Frighteners

John

There are definitely movies I have seen here for the first time as I would not have seen them otherwise

John

I can appreciate that sports are not for everyone and I have had to outgrow some elements of my own toxic fandom (letting the actions of strangers ruin my weekend), but I don't know if I would describe them as superficial. They are by no means as important as fans make them and have led to terrible things in some cases Hooliganism, general violence, but they have a genuine place in several cultures as a unifying cultural place (Didier Dogba requesting a cease fire during the Ivorian Coast Civil War in 2007 after qualifying for the African Cup of Nations). The World Cup was this year, and it provided an opportunity for people from various cultures and nations to bond. The 1947 season and Jackie Robinson, and USC vs. Alabama football in 1970 were sporting events that lead to changes in society. You could certainly argue that the international sporting ban on South Africa played a role in ending Apartheid there.

ThetaSigmaTheOriginal

I'm not disagreeing that they have an impact on society, but when you get down to what they actually are, kicking, bouncing, throwing a ball, from one side of a rectangle to the other, it doesn't really progress us as a species, it's a passtime, it's in that sense that it's superficial, so to see people hate other people, or even assault them based on made up sports teams, is just insane to me, as someone who doesn't get the fuss about sports at all. I don't deny that it's entertainment for many people, But then so are video games, like sports, it brings people together around the world, but at the end of the day, it's just pixels on a screen, even when you complete a game, do you really have anything of value to show for it? I discount the olympics a little, because real records are being broken, fastest runner, highest jumper, etc. It's pushing / testing the limits of the human body. The impact you're really describing is human community and breaking barriers, which people get from a variety of sources, sports, video games, music, religion, other various clubs and interests. Though I can't think of anything besides sports and religion that brings that ugly side of nature out in people, as well as some of the positive stuff you mention.

Marcus Hicks

I saw this in the cinema, with a group of friends, in its opening week.....and the massive fourth wall break was an incredible shock for the whole audience. The cinema went dead quiet for a bit, then erupted into laughter when the shadow puppets started.

Marcus Hicks

I can also safely that, at the time, this was probably the most meta film I had ever seen since Ferris Beuler.

John

I can appreciate that it is not something that you value the same way as I do, which is completely valid. I think we do disagree about the potential unifying aspects of sports, though I acknowledge the ugly side of sports. For some people, the act of competition and self-improvement is the definition of moving forward as an individual, more so than as a species, though the act of growth, I think, is one of the best aspects of our species, and sports can tie directly to that. Tommy John surgery was developed for baseball players but it is not utilized in medicine to help individuals outside of sports. The point I was making related to the importance of sports in breaking those barriers: Jackie Robinson changed how some people viewed Black Americans; Roberto Clemente changed how some people viewed Hispanics. Sports were the vehicles for those changes. I think the ugliness is unfortunately as ingrained in human nature as the potential for growth. Really, anything with more than 2 people interacting has the potential to bring out that ugliness. In the United States, there has been an increase in Political Violence; internet figures get threatened over reactions to content; musicians and Scientists, have been threatened or attacked because people disagreed with what they produced. These are examples of tribalism in some cases, and people just seeking outlets to express their baser and negative impulses. Though I acknowledge it is more common in sports than in some of these other venues.

Oh wow -- finally getting around to watching this and to Simone, from your description I suspect I know EXACTLY what you are dealing with with your shoulder, although it seems likely the initial cause was different. Mentioned before on here, played college football, worked out very heavily etc. etc. Also avid tennis player with a big serve. Well, eventually with all that activity my shoulder started to just THROB with pain shooting down the arm. I went in, had an MRI, and what was found was not rotator cuff damage, but rather calcium buildup from all the weightlifting that was rubbing and irritating the tendons in my shoulder. If its the same thing, its a deep throbbing with weakness and just...you have my sympathy. I typically have a stupid pain threshold, but that caused me to back way way off. Its no joke. Sorry for your pain.

Aaron Gunstone

There are some genuine moments of brilliance - the Dwarves' song at the beginning for example. Most of the casting is spot on. But as you say, far too much silliness. The fanedit fixes *all* of that.

Aaron Gunstone

I never *used* to watch reactions to movies I hadn't seen. Since Cinebinge made it so easy to "watch along" with them - no dicking about finding your own copy, no syncing, able to watch it on a single device - I've gone completely the other way. Now I find myself *avoiding* watching a new movie, thinking "I'll watch along with @Simone and @George, when they get to it".

Aaron Gunstone

*whole* films, here on Patreon, I do.But Cinebinge is the only channel I subscribe to. Watching the cutdown YouTube edit for a film I haven't seen doesn't appeal much.

Ghostdm

When I saw this movie in the theater, the melting film bit took most by surprise, definitely a lot of confusion. As a young movie buff, i had seen it done before, so wasn't surprised, but still loved the scene!

Monarch Black

They did a pretty good Trump impression in this.

gfixler

Um, look... We were all pretty high in the 80s, I guess.

Spectre Mando

Gotta get more Joe Dante movies on the channel before you get to ST:Voyager. Robert Picardo (Doctor) is in a lot of them
