Got my mediterranean stew cooking, settling in, time for some Star Trek! I look forward to every Wednesday. I am so going to love it when DS9 hits.

ChiefKC

Star Trek Day!

fforw

Q'Pla is kind of the Klingon good-bye, but it means "may you be victorious!"

Jon

She left her dog to die, didn't even ask about Maura or seem sad...guilty...lock her away

StonyD

Oof. Two clunkers. It gets better next week (spoilers for DS9 ahead lol)

StonyD

Are they doing DS9? I thought they were waiting

Mike FromOz

They will, once TNG is done

Robert Cooper

I mean, they're fine. But I definitiely wouldn't go out of my way to watch them.

Mark Huber

I’ve always wondered if Picard first seeing Troi in Romulan disguise considered if Troi ever went back in time, was captured by Romulans, then had a daughter who became a member of the Tal Shiar.

REDR58

Phew. “Aquiel” was a real exercise in patience for me. It was all I could do to fast-forward to the Klingon parts, which were at least tolerable. This ham-handed attempt to get Geordi a girlfriend again (which was the intent of the episode) is just beyond tedious. “This story began as another attempt at providing La Forge with a recurring romance. Jeri Taylor recalled, "We were looking for a new spin to put on a love story. A straight love story didn't seem good enough." (Captains' Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyages, p. 269)” https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Aquiel_(episode)

Joe Concepts

The Troi one is SO much better. At least it's something original.

REDR58

George, you suggested that Troi speaks with Aquiel? Unfortunately her total contribution of this episode is “Concerned?”

Superpotroast

As soon as the Romulan Commander spoke, I was like..Hey that's Doctor Chakwas from Mass Effect!..And also has a one episode bit part in Babylon 5.. She has a very recognizable voice..

Jomero

I wish Geordi would stop falling in love with conjurations he creates from a woman's online persona.

John

George: "The dog did it!" LOLOLOL!!!

Kat

While I agree that the reasons for Troi in particular being chosen for this mission are a bit flimsy, it's great to see her in a more aggressive role, instead of another "Troi gets telepathically assaulted by weird aliens"-episode.

Joel

Direct translation is "Success!"

dc

"Aquiel" as an episode...woof.

Robert Cooper

George almost called it at the start .. it's like The Thing, but boring. You can always count on an ep with Braga's name in the writing creds to be mid.

REDR58

I agree, Joe. I like that episode.

REDR58

Aquiel Ugh, another sad forehead alien. The applications to the actor are *really* unappealing to look at. The most evil dog in tv/film history… try Cujo! Or Bolton Ramsay's dogs from Game Of Thrones. Renée Jones, who played Aquiel Uhnari, seems to have just done TV and has been retired since 2012. How did the Klingons bring Uhnari on board the Enterprise without it *immediately* being noticed and reported by the transporter chief to the command staff? Oh, never mind. What does it matter. I’m not gonna comment that Picard looks like he wants to take that spare Beverly hand back to his quarters... 😐 When the coalescent Thing-ish being attacked Geordi in his quarters, just before he fired the second, killing shot, you can see the phaser beam is aimed upward in an angle and then sweeps down before he levels it at and shoots the (not)Thing. This means Geordi might have inadvertently damaged the ceiling of his quarters! Has anyone seen Chief O’Brien??? Where did he go??? 😮 Now, let us never speak of this episode again.

REDR58

The dog was the best part of the episode. And Simone is right, Riker needs to stop smacking the dog’s muzzle!

fforw

That translation never made sense to me given the Klingon culture.

TalynOne

Why do you assume there's only one Romulan language? Earth has many languages and the universal translator is used for that too.

Jaaahn

why do you assume Romulan has the same cultural attitude towards language as Earth? Earth has many civilizations and cultures thats enforced a single language on an entire populace.

Joel

Ok, but it is the direct translation in the Klingon Dictionary

p0sthum4n

Basically a Klingon version of "Godspeed" or "strength and honor"

Dan

I know why they did it but it seems a really poor choice for Troi to keep the Romulan captain on the bridge after relieving her in 6x14 - it carries a much bigger risk of her interfering or regaining command (as she did). Re Troi being a spy... she kinda is. In theory she counsels the crew but we hardly ever see her do it. Mostly she's on the bridge or attending meetings to detect deception etc. So it seems she's in more of an intelligence role but Starfleet likes to think of itself as above such things so they don't call it that. (And re her being selected for the mission maybe it's nominative determinism... Troi/Troy/Trojan Horse?)

fforw

Cultural blindness like that is most likely the reason why the Federation-Klingon Cold war took so long ;)

TalynOne

Earth has many civilizations that want to enforce a single language, but living in a non fantasy world they can't. It's simply a matter of cultural evolution that languages evolve across physical regions, even small ones. The UK itself has like 30 different dialects. With some so different you can barely understand them. The first Romulan language itself must have evolved from one or more Vulkan dialects.

REDR58

Cultural differences in Star Trek among different societies don’t matter until they do.

REDR58

Face of the Enemy George, if you think the Klingons are interesting now, just wait till DS9… We have seen English actor Carolyn Seymour who plays the Romulan Commander Toreth, twice before. She was in the earlier TNG episodes “Contagion” (2nd season) playing a different Romulan and “First Contact” (4th season) playing a Malcorian. DeSeve, the human Starfleet traitor to Romulus, is played by Barry Lynch. He is the younger brother of Richard Lynch who will later appear in TNG. When N’Vek (Scott McDonald) removes Toreth’s weapon from its holster after “Rakal” (Troi) takes command, you can see the weapon was placed in the holster “upside down” such that the muzzle (or energy emitter, whatever) is facing upwards at an angle, pointed directly at him! This is a very dangerous way to carry such a weapon. I assume it was done this way to allow the actor playing N’Vek to easily grab the weapon prop by its hand/trigger guard to pull it out of the holster. N’Vek has his weapon correctly holstered as you can see when he attempts to pull it and kill Toreth before being killed himself.

Wow, not a single bawdy joke about Beverly's cloned hand. George is slipping.

James W.

Geordi is such a hard character to like because of episodes like 613. Dude is "the ick" personified sometimes. Aquielle is the worst. Simone rightly calls out her seeming indifference to her dog being consumed, she has serial killer energy. When she first gets handed over to the Enterprise, Laforge is all stoked to reunite her with her "friend" and she is all "who?". With as contentious a personality as she has, you'd think that dog was her only friend. She made the effort to be deployed in active duty with it, and even got transferred with it, and has that little regard for it? Toss that chick out an airlock, she is horrible. 614 - @George Agree a Betazed spy would've been dope and Marina Sirtis deserved to be better utilized but Simone is correct in that the established Federation ideology at the time is that they don't do much in the way of spycraft. When they do it usually goes poorly, That being said, it is a role that gets addressed more in as we go on, but I feel like DS9 was the big one to delve into it intelligence and counter-intelligence.

Jean-Dominic Lapointe

So… Qapla’ It’s not good bye per se but it is often used that way. It conveys the general sentiment of success, past or future. So it’s Good Luck, congratulations, well done, etc In this episode’s case it’s “good luck in your investigation” and “I appreciate how our negotiation was concluded”

Pokes

Hindsight is 20/20, but if I could make a change to Troi’s character, I think it would have been better if she didn’t have the empathic powers since she’s half human. Instead, what she did have was a mother who could read people’s emotional states (and was constantly telling her what people were really thinking/feeling in any given moment), so she became incredibly good at reading people’s facial ticks and body language. Even members of different species. This would still allow her to fill mostly the same role in the show, but there would be a lot more ambiguity in her insights. Her expertise would still be incredibly valuable, but there would be a lot more tension because she could also just be flat out wrong about something. It would really smooth out having to come up with excuses about why her powers suddenly don’t work, or why she just randomly disappears some episodes.

John Rose

My head Cannon is that they implanted something in her brain where she believes she's speaking and hearing English but she's actually speaking and hearing romulan.

John Rose

The dog in the first episode was actually a dog that lived in my house for periods of time because it was one of the dogs that were trained at critters of the cinema and my stepmom helped train and would take to the Star Trek sets, this particular dog's name was Friday, and was in a lot of things in the late '80s and early 90s

REDR58

That's pretty cool! I found Friday's IMDB page here: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2930960/ More about Friday: * * * * * Friday was the dog that portrayed Maura in the Star Trek: The Next Generation sixth season episode "Aquiel". He was trained by Rob Bloch and LuJean Rose of Critters of the Cinema. Friday, a terrier mix, previously played Commissioner Robert Scorpio's dog for four years on the daytime soap General Hospital. (Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion, 2nd ed., p. 233) Friday also appeared on the Perfect Strangers episode "Dog Gone Blues" in 1987 which featured Tina Lifford. Friday also made several other appearances in commercials, television and film. https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Friday_(dog)

For why they took Troi, she said in the beginning that the last thing she remembered was being at a neuropsychology seminar at Burkara (sp?) VI, had just gone back to her room when she was attacked and kidnapped. That was the only place they could get someone from the Enterprise, because she wasn't on the Enterprise.

John Rose

Lujean was my Stepmom! He is also in the Genesis video for "I can't Dance"

REDR58

How bizarre.

gfixler

It would be so stupid, but I kind of really wish they made Troi randomly appearing on alien ships a thing. Worf: "Sir, they're hailing." Picard: "On-screen." Klingon Deanna looking nervous: "I am captain... D'Na(?) of the Klingon warship, Ba'tok(?)" Riker, quietly: "TF...? I just saw her an hour ago in Ten-Forward." Worf, quietly: "How does this keep happening?"

REDR58

John Rose, Friday?

John Rose

Nope, I think that was a false memory...lol, going to ask who it was thou..thanks

John Rose

I'm on the case...lol

REDR58

Good! It's hard to tell from the somewhat blurry. low-res Genesis video, but that dog looks close to "Maura" in TNG.

Dan

Except people get abducted from The Enterprise quite often when the plot demands it ;)

gfixler

Just for a second, when Troi was first learning what was going on, and being told what to say, I was thinking I hope the commander of the ship doesn't mind that Troi has an Earth British accent, but then I heard the commander of the ship speak 😂

Doug

I think you missed the subtle reason as to why they picked Troi. The Romulan Sub-Commander N'Vek says to her after outlining the situation 'You are an empath you can tell if I am lying, am I?' - no one else from the main Enterprise crew could have empathically sensed he was telling the truth and so been convinced to go along with him so quickly. Furthermore, her empathic ability allows her to course correct her actions much better as she can sense how well others are falling for her ruse, or suspect her. If you think about it, in another life Troi could have made an excellent spy.

ChiefKC

I love Jonathan Coulton. He has so many good songs including Code Monkey and Skullcrusher Mountain.

fforw

1:34:11 I wonder if the orientalism is not on purpose. The original Sherlock Holmes was chock full of it, wasn't it?

Ceruleo

To me, it always made sense why Troi was picked because she could detect when someone was becoming suspicious. In addition to being an empath and counselor, I think Troi was also a cultural specialist, which makes sense since her mother is an ambassador. We often see her briefing the crew on different cultures and we even saw Troi helping Picard on pronunciation of some ridiculous sounding language in the season one episode, "The Big Goodbye".

Joel

Another thing that ST sadly got way ahead of time...

Thomas Young

Unrelated, but I just saw Magic has a Star Trek release coming out. I’m sure Simone is hyped!

2026-10-24 22:00 Just incase no one mentioned it, the Romulian captain you liked in this episode was played by Carolyn Seymour who also played a Romulian captain (a different character) in Season 2, Episode 11, and she plays Space Mirasta Yale in First Contact Season 4, Episode 15. She killed it in every role!

She also played Dr. Mirasta Yale in the episode "First Contact" (the one where Riker gets it on with aliene Bebe Neuwirth)

John

Simone: "Did we stop??" 😂

Marcus Hicks

Come on, we all know that dogs in Sci-fi are usually bad news (sorry, still traumatised by The Thing).

Marcus Hicks

Really? I actually enjoyed these episodes. Though Face of the Enemy is my favourite of the two.
