Thomas Wake: Yer fond of me lobster aint' ye? I seen it - yer fond of me lobster! Say it! Say it. Say it! Ephraim Winslow: I don't have to say nothin'. Thomas Wake: Damn ye! Let Neptune strike ye dead Winslow! HAAARK! Thomas Wake: Hark Triton, hark! Bellow, bid our father the Sea King rise from the depths full foul in his fury! Black waves teeming with salt foam to smother this young mouth with pungent slime, to choke ye, engorging your organs til' ye turn blue and bloated with bilge and brine and can scream no more - only when he, crowned in cockle shells with slitherin' tentacle tail and steaming beard take up his fell be-finned arm, his coral-tine trident screeches banshee-like in the tempest and plunges right through yer gullet, bursting ye - a bulging bladder no more, but a blasted bloody film now and nothing for the harpies and the souls of dead sailors to peck and claw and feed upon only to be lapped up and swallowed by the infinite waters of the Dread Emperor himself - forgotten to any man, to any time, forgotten to any god or devil, forgotten even to the sea, for any stuff for part of Winslow, even any scantling of your soul is Winslow no more, but is now itself the sea! Ephraim Winslow: Alright, have it your way. I like your cookin'.

Yesss, been waiting on this, time to fix a stiff drink of honey and turpentine and descend into madness! 🔥

I think Good Time is a very excellent movie and it will likely get a very VERY strong reaction... that said, that movie is the reason the Safdie brothers don't work together anymore. Josh Safdie filmed a minor being abused by a cast member without calling cut in a scene. It didn't make the cut because Benny Safdie was furious and as he found out more he cut ties with his own brother over it. They fired a producer and then completely dissolved their production company. I think it should noted going in that the movie is not ethically made and that people were hurt making it and that one of the directors is deeply embarrassed by and upset about the work.

Jay Johnson

and now Simone has shared her lice with everyone. quite a head scratcher. [just a joke playing off her mention of her partner's vocal blunder]

simo

Haven't seen the reaction yet but i hope you guys make the connection that it's the same director of 3 movies you loved :)

Michael Bauer

"Is he just, like... fucking ... summoning Cthulu to bone?" gave me a laugh. I needed that today - thanks. Also - Prometheus and Proteus... great catch! :)

Jay Johnson

I had no clue that some bears know how to open car doors. getting into garbage cans/dumpsters/etc. I can understand, because that is just opening a container. But actually using the door handle? fascinating. and re: the freaky friday question, I seem to remember a video in the past where Simone had dressed up as George and vice versa, and they tried to imitate each other for a bit. that's what this question reminded me of (or maybe that never actually happened and I'm just misremembering). which also coincides with Halloween (dressing up), in fact maybe that previous bit was done just for Halloween

Cc Decc

I've just been wrapping up another Conan Exiles campaign exploring their new Cthulu adjacent Outer Dark scenario (Conan's author Ron E. Howard and Lovecraft were friends and liked to cross pollinate their mythologies), so this will fit right in.

YER FOND OF ME REACTION!

I knew I was going to love this movie when there was the blink-and-you-miss-it fake seagulls on strings during the scene where Ephraim is walking up to the lighthouse. This is also Robert Pattinson's breakout role. it's when he finally peeled the stink of Twilight off and people started taking him seriously as an actor. it's a great film and easily Eggers's best.

gfixler

Definitely let the train hit the 5 guys. It's more likely one of them will see it coming and warn the others. Also, with one victim, people look around for someone to blame. With 5, you get a bunch of infighting, like "Your guy knew it was unsafe to be on the rails that day! Why didn't he say something?" "My guy?! Your guy was the foreman! If anyone should have known..." in the ensuing chaos, you can slip away, and no one will be the wiser.

Jonas

We would believe you immediately if you two Freaky Fridayed. Suddenly Simone is telling the perverted jokes. Suddenly George has a horrified look on his face when crazy things happen in a movie while Simone would just be grinning ear to ear.

Daniel Griffith

The photo should have been the mermaid with the fish flaps.

PIG

What?

Lokior

“He just laid there?” well I guess George has never seen liveleak vids. People tend to freeze and accept fate and be cut up and stuff. And Dafoes character is also old

Kansas City Shuffler

As someone from New England, I want to say that this is the most accurate movie I've ever seen.

Kansas City Shuffler

By the way, switching bodies and attempting to live your life ordinarily in the other person's body is the plot of an episode of an anime called Revolutionary Girl: Utena, which is so obscure I don't think you guys will ever react to. (By the way, that is only one episode and the premise itself is not a spoiler at all. Although explaining the plot otherwise would be.)

Inkpendude

You can't defend yourself and give a cool poetic speech at the same time

Sykonee

Yeah, definitely Pattison's post-Twilight breakout role. Certainly for me. Open for interpretation for sure, but I've always felt his character actually died when he took the tumble while painting, or at the very least in a coma. Everything after is him suffering his own form of purgatory from the guilt that led him there.

Monica Alarcon

Actually! (oh I get to say it) You've already seen all 10 Quentin Tarantino Movies.... Death Proof was the last one you did... there's only his segment in Four Rooms left but it's a movie with four directors so it's not HIS movie...

Carlos

I desperately need Eggers to make a full on Lovecraftian horror film because god do I love this shit. Give him Mountains of Madness.

Gizmo_Mogwai_

I have no idea what this is about. I would normally skip but laser beams from Simone's eyes? OK I have to watch 🤣👋🏼

Twiska Brand

Actually, I think the first Director you've seen the entire feature filmography of is Quinton Tarantino. Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, both parts of Kill Bill, Jackie Brown, Death Proof, Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained and Once Upon A Time in Hollywood.

Logan Nelson

Yeah, those openings are skipped every time and loathed for eternity... Like, I'm literally about to watch, why are you spoiling your own video?

DonDuracell

A24 has become in recent years such a powerhouse in cinema. There most recent project "You can see everything" is my pick for the Academy Award Season.

Jaaahn

you might not like it personally, but they exist in a lot of videos for a reason. what you think thousands of channels across many different genres do a thing that doenst work for no reason just to annoy you? or perhaps creators get to see metrics on what works and what doesnt. its also just like 7 seconds of the video, how much damage to your life is it actually doing really.

Mastervodo

That was quite the speech for sure. I was impressed. That's one that high schoolers should do in Speech and Drama for a Solo Dramatic Interpretation.

Mastervodo

I don't have to say nuthin'

John Suire

Neptune is the original Cthulhu 🧜‍♂️

OddThomas

I would kill for you guys to watch the Twilight franchise.

Cory Garron

Can't wait to watch this after work, in about 2.5 hours. That Lighthouse is in my province (its not in the middle of the Atlantic). Ive been there a few times. I remember taking my date there after watching "Training Day"... wow 25 years ago.

droodly

If I show up for work at the train place and see five guys om one track and one guy on another, I'm going home sick. Let someone else deal with it.

michael denny

Patterson character triggers me so much in this movie ive had so many incompotent workers half ass life and death stuff I get dafoes character so much. Not everything he's still wierd but God I hate Ephram.

Cc Decc

I think some of their stuff is overrated, but even then I almost always agree with the reasons WHY it is overrated. A few decades ago the major studios just almost entirely abandoned making new original stories there at some point, and I think there is a hunger for them from audiences that the studios somehow are blind to as they churn out an endless chum of IP reboots and sequels of sequels.

OddThomas

A great film about logging: Train Dreams

Philipp Roensch

I knew George would be up on the greek myths to get this simile quick. This is truly Egger's best, most bold style and direct visualization of madness. He's got the best out of the Patterson and Dafoe, funny and wicked intense performances. I was in a weird place the first time I've seen this. Definitly high and giggled my ass of, it impressed nonetheless. I'm fond of this lobster. You could totally do a poll about director's you are trying to "complete" so to speak. I would definitly have you see all of Scorsese and the Coens.

Logan Nelson

So we're totally fine with the channel going down the same corporate nonsensical video edit road? They gonna start doing AI thumbnails next, those are done by thousands of channels too... Just because it's popular doesn't make it good... Its simply a bad idea and makes the video worse from the jump, so I start in an annoyed state... Luckily I have access to the full version so it's rare I actually deal with YouTube edits and just now saw it for the first time so this is my visceral reaction....

Logan Nelson

But, they truly make no sense to have... Please justify them if I'm missing something but it's the equivalent of watching a movie trailer as the lead in for the movie in my humble opinion...

VenusLato

How about Scorsese' 'The Last Temptation of Christ' for more Dafoe?

REDR58

A great film about a train enthusiast: The Station Agent (2003) with Peter Dinklage.

REDR58

The Green Knight (2021) is another excellent A24 movie.

REDR58

I’ve seen dogs open door handles and bears are just big dogs, right?

Cc Decc

The problem is that given enough time, almost every director, and certainly every prolific director, is going to throw in some stinkers. People have mentioned watching all of Tarentino's movies, but the channel is also very close on Nolan movies. Watched: Memento Batman Begins The Prestige Dark Knight Dark Knight Rises Inception Interstellar Dunkirk Tenet Oppenheimer Still to Watch: Insomnia The Odyssey

ANDAUR J

Everything that the body expels should be here in this movie 😝. What a masterpiece

John

You know, I don't think Thomas is cut out to be a Wickie...

PIG

What?! :)

REDR58

WHATWHATWHAT

REDR58

Yeesh, I'd never heard of this and looked it up just now and holy hell that incident was revolting.

REDR58

Perhaps you were at one that closely resembled it? Because the lighthouse in the movie was a set constructed at Cape Forchu, Nova Scotia: "The Lighthouse Locations The Lighthouse is sculpted amidst the raw beauty of Cape Forchu, Nova Scotia. This breathtaking peninsula, characterized by a rugged landscape of volcanic rock, served as the foundation for the remote New England island featured in the movie. Rooted in history and bathed by the Atlantic Ocean, Cape Forchu provides unparalleled coastal views that demand your attention, with its lighthouse the undeniable centerpiece of the region. The film's production team brought this vision to life by creating a magnificent 70-foot-tall lighthouse structure. They meticulously constructed the keepers' quarters, a breezeway, and other outbuildings alongside the lighthouse. In addition, certain scenes were filmed at the studio and soundstage in Halifax, Nova Scotia. " https://giggster.com/guide/movie-location/where-was-the-lighthouse-filmed

Ian Tellam

Especially given that when he wakes up from the fall he's getting pecked a by seagulls like at the end.

djKENTO

Yeah I appreciate Benny a lot for having the strength to cut ties when he found out. Couldn’t have been easy.

Kind of a promethean/oedipal soteriological fever dream of a movie. Can hardly move for 'em these days.

REDR58

I think the mattress was stuffed with horse hair? George, you asked about the time period the movie is set. Some clues that we see to the date as the movie goes on... The engine and all of the ironwork and floor grating of the lantern room and the style of the rivets and bolts and so forth looks at least Victorian age-ish, which is 1837-1901. The first steam powered foghorn was invented in 1853 by Scottish engineer Robert Foulis (while he was in Canada). The first coal-fired steamships started appearing around the early 1820s (1819?). But even if you don't know those dates (as I did not), the reference to "Captain Ahab" puts this after the publication of Moby Dick in 1851. In any case, the movie is set in the 1890s. It definitely looks late 19th century from the style of dress and some of the items seen as set dec. Incidentally, when he was painting the exterior of the tower, on the front of Ephraim Winslow (fake) / Thomas Howard overalls before he falls, we can see "United States Light House Establishment” stenciled on and later we see that it also says “U.S. L.H. Establishment” on the barometer gauge in the engine room / powerhouse. The US Light House Establishment was established in 1789. Some fascinating history about that here: https://www.lighthousedigest.com/digest/StoryPage.cfm?StoryKey=4286 Before Thomas (DaFoe) gives his name to Winslow/Howard, the subtitles show “Thomas babbling in distance” right before Winslow/Howard looked up at the underside of the lantern from and saw the dripping...and the tentacle. The woman on the rocks is played by (Canadian?) actor and makeup artist Kyla Nicolle. The mermaid was played by Ukrainian actor Valeriia Karaman who will be in the upcoming movie “Werwulf” also directed by Eggers. I loved the look of this movie. The acting was very absorbing. But at the end I was left mostly unsatisfied. Not because we didn't quite get all the answers or see everything the characters saw... I just found it underwhelming somehow. Not my favorite Eggars' movie.

FranciscoGios

This is the first time watching this movie while knowing half of the plot, but was surprised how it ended.

PIG

What!!!

MacGuffinStuff

I have to wonder if this movie idea was at all inspired by the infamous Flannan Isle lighthouse mystery. Obviously a lot of inspiration from Greek mythology which is so cool, love that we have George as a resident expert by the way, but yeah. So the Flannan Isle lighthouse thing, basically three lighthouse keepers disappeared while the facilities were left intact, the details were odd, there's a ton of theories and conjecture, one theory is that someone went mad and etcetera'd the other guys, or some variation. This is the Buzzfeed Unsolved version: https://youtu.be/PoNCG3PZKII?is=6twQXWKILed0C7YE Edit, Fine, there's a Simon Whistler one too: https://youtu.be/2OkFN0Kw9YE?is=DBtzOqewAhXvECob

Jaaahn

wow Logan, in one sentence you manage to use 3 forms of bad faith argument, slippery slope, guilt by association AND false equivalence. thats almost impressive it wasnt so shitty of a form of debate. not to mention you picked the one thing that makes them different and is a brand for them, their custom weird thumbnails and tag on an AI bad faith argument in a shitty attempt to make your initial point seem more valid. but hey, thanks for showing everyone how your shitty opinion on the 7 seconds of preview that actually effects you in zero ways but might be positive for the channel is actually just that, shitty.

Logan Nelson

You are the one that brought up popular = good... The AI thumbnail is en example of why that's not true... Not an expectation of the channel... It also shows their mindset towards these things that isn't congruent to their own ethos; not a slippery slope but a general direction the channel is possibly going... Also, you have yet to justify why those at all make any sense to include in the video other than "Everyone else does it, so it's good" nonsense...

Logan Nelson

I pay to be here, so I'm going to express my feelings about what I'm paying for...

2026-11-02 07:00 i at no point said popular = good. i said its popular for a reason, that it probably benefits the channels that does it or no one would be doing it. i dont actually have to justify why, im not the one that made it and i dont have the data or metrics that S&G has, and neither do you. my point is, just cause you personally dont like something, it doenst mean its automatically bad or a slippery slope to something else. especially when its just 7 fucking seconds that doenst affect you in anyway, as you so put it, you watch the full length stuff anyways.

This movie is based on a true story I think MrBallen actually covered.

Logan Nelson

Hmmm... My comment was deleted... Cool...

Jasper Collins

I love the longer discussions at the end of the reaction. It's probably not good for viewer retention but please give us more of your thoughts!
