Funny story. On the DVD I've got, the subtitles are pretty different from what this video shows - but the dub matches very well. It feels like they went out of their way to find two different ways to say the same thing for as many lines as possible, i.e. "Please don't hurt me" becomes "I don't have a chance against you". Watching it with subs and dubs becomes a strange experience I imagine feels a lot like puzzling together and trying to follow a conversation in a language you only halfway understand, as you struggle to work out what the intention of the original line might be that's probably somewhere in between the two translations. And I imagine that was done on purpose to give the foreign audience something fun to do as compensation for all that's lost in translation.

This will be a fun watch. I'd love to see your reaction to True Romance, written (but not directed) by Tarantino and a cast list that will knock your socks off - Slater, Gandolfini, Hopper, Arquette, Walken, Kilmer, Jackson, Pitt, Oldman.... need I say more! Another movie I have always really liked but don't see or hear much about is The Gift. Another stellar cast, including Blanchett, Reeves, Holmes, Kinnear, Ribisi, Swank, and written in part by Billy Bob Thornton. Please toss these into the mix! Thanks.

This movie is wonderful in so many ways. Even better than shaolin soccer.

Simone, that thing you talked about how the movie was really funny or really sad/gruesome is a big Chinese thing; the "perfect" Chinese movies are equal parts "good" and "bad" because of the concept of Tao; "heroes" often flip-flop from light to dark, or events are either great or ordinary. Of course, Stephen Chow does it tongue-in-cheek, so the dramatically "evil" things like shattering the girls lollipop are funny because it was so extreme, but also so trivial. Chloe Zhao, director of the Marvel movie 'The Eternals' kept changing the viewpoint of good and bad, which was lost on American audiences and less popular than a usual Marvel movie, which has clear-cut good and bad characters. Edit: Also, we're gonna have to see this clarinet expertise on camera Simone. Edit edit: George, I'm thoroughly American, but I really enjoy Stephen Chow; he knows how to interpret Chinese tropes into American-friendly terms. He clearly knows both worlds well.

That part at the end with the multiple takes are worth EVERY cent... I'm glad I joined Patreon...

Love this movie so much and awesome you guys got to react to it! I watched the English dub and was surprised your subtitles were the same all the way thru, haha
