I love the moment where George is like “their uniforms look like nazis” and then Simone goes “and they all have blue eyes” and I was waiting for you to realize they’re all white people from Argentina… A nation where many nazi war criminals moved their families as they lost the war and this entire planet is a fascist military dictatorship that spreads lies in order to exterminate a race…

Morion Williams

Humans may be the bad guys, but you ever notice that on bug planets there is not other life than the arachnids? They killed off everything else till only they remain, we may be the bad guys, but less so than the arachnids.

Thoko

Maybe the arachnids are huge but there might also be tiny creatures on their planet, like humans, dogs, cats but the size of Earth-ants

If you like democracy, you want voting to be easier, not harder.

Paul Verhoeven, after growing up under occupation of an authoritarian military dictatorship, might have some commentary to make in a movie about an authoritarian military dictatorship? Seems likely.

David Lonewolf Wright

I always found the asteroids flung as weapons to Earth to be problematic considering how far away the bug planet is suppose to be from Earth. These things aren't flying at light speed, so it would take thousands to millions of years to make that distance... so I am thinking Buenos Aires was an inside job.

Paul Davey

Paul Verhoeven grew up in Nazi occupied Holland. The movie is about fascism and how easy it is to propagandize onto society. In Starship Troopers we started the war with the bugs, and yes we are the bad guy. The 'SS uniforms' are very intentional.

The “Special Edition” re-release of "Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back" came out the same year (1997).  During the showing, they ran the trailer for "Starship Troopers". When that trailer ended, the audience went wild, standing and cheering (we were also very hyped up for Star Wars).  We’ve never heard of Starship Troopers, but we knew for sure we would be first in line for tickets.

William

Never watch the sequel, it is beyond awful :)

Eik104

What an intro! 😂😂😂

Kripke's Corner

There were 3 other Starship Trooper movies, the last one was animated and pretty decent.

Kripke's Corner

Demolition Man! You guys want a fun sci-fi action movie with comedy, you should check out or add to the next list.

Yes, the humans in this movie live in a militaristic totalitarian society that needs an enemy to thrive. The generational indoctrination in definitely there, and it seems intentionally set up so you see how these beautiful perfect young people are swept away to adventure to defeat the horrible foe that threatens their society. I bet that's how a lot of young people in Nazi Germany felt. The humans are not even trying to create diplomatic relations with the bugs, they just want to know how they think to destroy them. I definitely see it as an allegory of the Nazi ideology where "sub-humans" were seen as rodents and bugs that need to be get rid of. Of course in an over-the-top Paul Verhoeven way he makes the enemy literally bugs.

star craft is an attempt to create a computer game for game workshops table top game warhammer 40000, just as war craft was for warhammer fantasy. games workshop at the time was not interested in licensing the intellectual property at the time but the zerg are a tyrannid facsimile. Fun fact the novel Starship Troopers is credited for creating the Space Marine Trope and power armor none of which really feature in the film due to technological constraints at the time.

Can't wait to get a vote on "Galaxy Quest" now. I think you two would freak out watching that Comedy...

Great reaction. This movie is not as good as RoboCop and Total Recall but its still great. Many of the cgi heavy scenes have aged well. I haven't watched the sequels because I heard they aren't very good. They have also made animated movies and games based on this.

MrCAL

Nice reaction guys, although the fact you got to the end of the film and still weren't sure if this movie was satirical or not is crazy lol.

Githerax

Ok George the guy said "You think you can lick my navs", as in, do better than his navigation course (which the computer showed she did, "Course Optimal"). Obviously intended as a blunt double-entendre. Also, if you are interested, read award-winning book Ender's Game and its sequel, Speaker for the Dead - the two best books of the now (over?)long-running series. Has a similar theme of war and also uses bugs as the antagonists. They did make an 'Ender's Game' movie which is...an ok? movie, I guess. Wasn't well-recieved by fans of the books. And hey, Simone! Here's a fun animal for you to learn about! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cymothoa_exigua Regarding the uniforms: To quote from the New Yorker article that I linked under 'Robocop', "When studio executives complained that the Federation’s banner was “a Nazi flag,” Verhoeven reassured them: “No . . . it’s completely different colors.” Yes, that was completely Verhoeven's intention. https://www.newyorker.com/culture/culture-desk/how-starship-troopers-aligns-with-our-moment-of-american-defeat

Noticed in the credits something I'd forgotten from long ago - the teacher in the dissection scene is Rue McClanahan, Blanche from Golden Girls. She's unrecognizable in this.

JarHead0351

Yea I enjoy this back in the day and it was fun watching it again with the two of you. You ask, "This is the End" has about 17+ stars in the movie who play themselves - Mars Attack, is a funny 50s type of movie - I Robot is a good sci-fi movie with Will Smith - Evolution is a great movie Sci-fi Comedy - a short list

Erik Lundmark

OMG Galaxy Quest, I assume you already have that one written down 8-) That and Demolition Man

Marko T.

I have to recommend Hollow Man (2000) again. Great scifi horror movie by Verhoeven.

Emrhys

...... and of course, another, Peter V movie ..... Basic Instinct. Should present some interesting editing challenges for George for the YT version.

Gryff

It's definitely a Scifi horro movie by Verhoeven.

Richard B.

The Mario Party joke was hilarious and hit home with me as it was code my ex used to say around others to tell me that we should be alone. So Glad you guys are enjoying these types of movies and as others have said Hollow Man (Horror) and Demolition Man are very high on my list.

Avenging Dark

I read the novel in 1978, Starship Troopers (1959). My first SF novel. It's written by Heinlein as his justification & support for the Vietnam War. The Arachnids are his analogue for communists (hive, tunnels, mindless drones etc.) Notably omitted from the novel is the second alien race (the Skinnies) which is also at war with humans & of course, the power armour, which is every MI infantryman's basic weapon system. Apart from the militaristic political philosophy, the power armour is the "thing" that most readers remember from the book. An absolutely amazing bit of kit. I think it's superior to MCRN power armour in The Expanse. And Carmen is bald. Fleet pilots shave their heads for practical reasons in zero-gravity. In Starship Troopers 3: Marauder (2008) we get to see something akin to the power armour. A giant version of it. Still working on it. The notion that voting rights should be earned appealed to me & over the years a few of us had worked on how this idea could be fairly applied.

I was coming to say this exact thing. Blizzard tried to license Warhammer and Warhammer 40k for games. But Games Workshop said no so Blizzard just crated inspired games Warcraft for Warhammer and Starcraft for Warhammer 40k. Any doubts search 40k space marine and 40k Tyranid. Plus Necron is the way.

wroot

StarCraft was released 1998 and was probably in the making for a few years. So probably not directly inspired by this movie. If anything, maybe actually this movie makers got inspiration for bugs design from the Zerg :)

Mastercoupon

After seeing you watch this I followed Dina Meyer diz-on Instagram and found a great picture of their reunion.

Jonathan Ly

The books do a great job of explaining how the world was in chaos and how the vets took over and turned their world into this militaristic government.

Thomas Yanez

Considering how perceptive you guys usually are, I found it highly amusing that George kept struggling with how there "might be" some sort of "underlying commentary" when the movie was balls-to-the-walls social commentary/satire. Then again, maybe I shouldn't be too surprised, since it seems like y'all whiffed on the same thing in Verhoeven's "Robocop". Regardless, still a fantastic reaction. You guys have quickly become my favorite reactors since I found you and I am spending WAY too much time binging through your content.

Christopher

Fun fact the girl who kills the guy in training got married after this movie to him. they are still together

Brendan Rafferty

I managed to see an early longer workprint of this film.. the effects were, of course, unfinished... but what was interesting was that there were many more scenes centered around the Denise Richards character Carmen... some available as deleted scenes on DVD or bluray... but also a few scenes that I have not seen anywhere since that work print. Her character was much more interesting and fleshed out, not merely the love interest. She was not in love with Rico and was just trying to not hurt his feelings and she was laser focused on her career... this is touched on in the final cut of the film, but the extra workprint scenes really hammer that down and make it clear She was a much stronger goal oriented character... in the end she also makes it clear to Rico again that she is on a different path and there is an early conversation scene when she is in the academy, talking with a fellow cadet about how she has no time for relationships It's a shame she was edited down to just being a backup love interest for Rico
