this uh...this is the worst book to movie i've ever had the displeasure of seeing. Heinlein crafted a short, tight book that might actually have you having a conversation about society, and people's places in it and responsibilities to each other, more a set of philosophical conversations occasionally punctuated by some vague action, and Verhoeven just took it and said "HAHA! SPACE-NAZIS! LOOK HOW SILLY THEY ARE!" They overt racism against the bugs was never there, the contempt of the enemy was never there, the entire character of xander was made from whole cloth. the single most important part of the mobile infantry was that they were in powered armor-which inspired several animes, BTW-which oh look, none in the movie. Rico was a man trying to find himself and his place in society, and he ended up finding it and dedicating himself, and verhoeven just goes "haha! johnnie dumb!" Dizzie Flores was a guy that had one mention in the first few pages and died right then. Carmen played virtual no role at all. This could have been a serious, affecting meditation on the role of a military in a society, provoking thought and debate, but he went for half ass comedy and ham-fisted "commentary"

Hi George, at 15:35, 15:46 and from 16:06 onward during the battle scenes, the sound from the original movie sometimes is very loud when you switch from muffled to unedited sound - especially when listening with headphones. Might be a good idea if you could lower the loudness there a bit... Other than that very cool reaction :-). Was looking forward to this one. And, yes, this one was meant as an over the top display of militarism to show the silliness of it.

That thumbnail... It's a real tragedy. Poor Simone. Thank you for your sacrifice, Citizen. 🤣

SuperMachoJediKnight, I read the book as a youth, and I would describe the movie as an act of violence done to that book. I won't say that I agree with the director's motivations, but I understand them. Paul Verhoeven was born in the Netherlands in 1938. In 1940 the Nazis invaded that country and stayed in control until 1945. Spending formative years under military occupation would (I assume) explain why Verhoeven is deeply skeptical of the military. Heinlein's book asked deep, thoughtful questions about patriotism, what it means to be a citizen, what it means to sacrifice for your country. Verhoeven's movie is *not* a faithful adaptation of the book but a rebuttal to it. Verhoeven had seen other people asking those questions before, and he didn't like the answers they came up with. Verhoeven is asking, pretty explicitly, if a people honor and lionize the military to such an extreme degree, would they even notice a slide toward fascism?

Good news everyone! Fry is donating me is liver! His young, healthy, liver.

You guys have now seen all the good verhoven movies like a lot of directors he had a specific period in his life when he made quite a lot of movies and then made less and less as time went on.

Einherj

The movie is not trying to be an adaptation of the book. Paul Verhoeven himself has said that he never finished the book because he didn't like the pro-militaristic tone of it. The movie is more of a rebuttal to the book.

SuperMachoJediKnight

yes, i've read all the rebuttals and explanations and apologies. it's been 25 years. he didnt even finish the book, so it's hard to believe he was doing anything but being reactionary. he didnt like other peoples' answers, so he came up with a poorly scripted, poorly acted, and just generally silly piece when he could have made something that did more then make people go "ew". Dr Strangelove was 10x the movie getting the point across 100x better, 20+ years before.

HeyHeyJK

Haha, I just mentioned this one in comments for your Robocop reaction, but I'm sure plenty of other people did, too. I was working on the Sony/Columbia lot in LA when they were shooting this and there were days where you would see all the extras in their uniforms out making phone calls and smoking and stuff outside the sound stage.

BND

I love this channel! I love how they're so confused by everything and how they find everything so weird and bizarre. It's so hilarious to me 😂

Craig Rhymer

It's the CGI that you can't see that is noteworthy. Casper Van Diem has a tattoo of Casper (the friendly ghost) on his bicep that they had to erase with CGI in every scene where he's shirtless.

Rezblade

Star Trek Chris first two movies
