Neil Gaiman on the term "graphic novel": His story goes, he's at some fancy dinner, the kind you have to go to when you win literary awards they make up just for you, and he tells somebody he wrote Sandman, and somebody goes like "Yes I know that one. You don't write comics, man, you write graphic novels!" At which point Neil thinks to himself, but doesn't say out loud, because he is nothing it not diplomatic, he feels like he's told he's not a prostitute but a Lady of the Evening. Comics is a medium of artistic expression, like painting, dancing, movies, radio dramas and professional wrestling. That's all there is to it. The fact that it's not widely "respected" in the same way as say, opera, is a strength, not a weakness. It leaves it for people to decide on the artistic merit of a work on their own - where people get the worth and meaning of Leonardo's Mona Lisa explained to them in middle school, Grant Morrison's The Invisibles is left on library shelves to be picked up and read only by those who are curious. So for management to make up the term "graphic novel" to try and buy respectability for comics is not only faintly embarrassing, but also kind of materially damaging to this small long suffering industry. You're right to hesitate to say it.

I think Zach Snyder is at his strongest when he is adapting content that technically you could say was clearly storyboarded first (a lot of this movie was lifted straight off the pages of the graphic novel). I think this is his best film with The Watchmen being number 2, though he did go his own way on the ending, but it still worked I thought. The Watchman tv series is really good, but more based on the comic book version ending.

Dor

Maaaan, now I really want you to jump from Snyder's take on Miller to Snyder's take on Moore and do Watchmen.

JediLounger

If you guys do Watchmen, watch the Ultimate Edition like I said in another comment. It’s the version that best replicates reading the comic. The transition is not perfect (spoilers), but it’s still the best one.

Jon Johns

I should mention, "V for Vendetta" which is another film adaptation of a Moore comic... And something I rewatch every November Fifth. Anyone else enjoy "The Killing Joke" adaptation?

Heartfelt

I wonder who people would root for between 300 and Leonidas or Daenerys and her dragons with all her bend the kneeing?

Eik104

Indeed, 2006 was a "quotable year" lol. You could do polls by year, that could be interesting. Like "movies from 2006".

Twiska Brand

You should watch the DC EU. Man of Steel, then BvS Ultimate Edition, Then Wonder Woman, then Zach Snyder's Justice League, then Aquaman. After that, I'd say stop. Maybe THE Suicide Squad last.

Raymond DeGraw

Love your reaction... In the future you definitely should watch "V for Vendetta" and "Watchmen Ultimate Edition"

Hey neat cameo by Michael Madsen at the beginning there- wait...no...that was *SIMONE*! Nailed it. Also, George: "I'm not going to be like "actually"..." 00:01:49 "Yeah..real steel too, not just wooden..." GEORGE. it's ok jk, I know you're looking for opportunities to provide commentary so I forgive. "Then we will fight in the shade" What was that, George? Did you want to say something HMMM? Simone: "I hate stabbing." That stabbing is why we went to the moon in the 60's. Sparta stalling Persia there led to Greece becoming the dominant power in the region and the spread of Hellenistic culture. Greek math and science laid the basis for all further scientific development in Europe and the colonies all over the world.

More good graphic novel-ish movies: - Scott Pilgrim vs oh wait nm - 'The Mask' (1994) starring Cameron Diaz and Cameron Diaz' red dress and Truman - as mentioned by others, 'Hellboy' (2004) and 'Hellboy 2' (2008), by our boi Del Toro and starring Ron Perlman *not* 'Hellboy' (2019) *don't ask* - 'Constantine' (2005) Keanu Reeves some dislike this movie, it's not a faithful adaptation they say, because Keanu's hair is black, not brown like the comix so sayeth the frothing fanboys. And also it confused people which doesn't mean that people were slow-witted and not paying attention, it meant the movie needed clearer exposition and less 3D characterization. - 'Road to Perdition' (2002) starring Tim Hinks (or something like that, can't remember the guy's name, you might recognize him from 'Bosom Buddies') technically qualifies for this list - 'Mystery Men' (1999) doesn't quite qualify for this list so I won't put it here oh oops well I did anyway

Githerax

'The Prestige' (2006) and 'The Illusionist' (2006) double feature *please* (George, tell me how and I'll pay extra for this), two good movies about stage magic to compare and contrast.

'Director's Cut' is better. George will pick the Ultimate Cut, then watch the Director's Cut, then realize I'm right. Ulimate is just LOTR with the Scouring added. George and Simone are smart enough to understand the point without belaboring it with the Black Freighter folderol.

I like a lot of the DC stories, but I wish the DC animated movies were a bit more tightly paced, they just feel like I'm forced to look at the comic book page for a set amount of time and can't turn the page when I want to.

Mike Adams

This movie reminds me a lot of Hero with Jet Li. Definitely worth a watch

Michael Lynch

I think I was annoyed 300 times in this reaction.

JarHead0351

Simone, so what happen in this movie?? abs abs abs and kill the traitor. lol It was a good movie

MacGuffinStuff

Visually awesome, historically "fantastic"... That's all I'm gonna say, besides that this reaction had me laughing a lot! I'm forever gonna remember "hot gates" as a euphemism 😂 and all the abs jokes, which, btw, i think it was a combined effort of trainers, chicken, broccoli, and the make up department, you know they were shading those abs like they were cheek bones. Also, as far as recommendations on other graphic novel/comic adaptations, "American Splendor" and "Ghost World", very different from 300, but 👍

If you guys like Lena Headey you should check out Dredd (2012), you can see a different side of her.

Dick Tracy is always fun! :

George. I felt your pain over this incredibly "100% historically accurate" telling of the 300 story (eye roll into back of head) apparently the Spartans in this movie were so toned in their chest and abs that spears and swords could not penetrate their sexy sweaty skin. They had no need for the heavy bronze armor worn by hoplites that historians claim they wore. Nah just sweaty bronze skin
