Couple of things for the new site player. I watch on iPhone. 1)The screen goes dark and doesn’t stay open 2) I can’t expand the video to watch it in full view by tilting my phone.

Cinebinge

So in regards to the screen going dark, that likely has to do with your phones setting of "going to sleep after __ minutes", what we built is a website, just a browser and therefor cannot have control over your phones functions, unlike an app. As for expanding to full screen to watch, the player itself should have a double arrow in the corner that goes full screen, once youve done so you can just rotate your phone, provided that you have rotation turned on. Hope this helps.

Oh joy! Can't wait to watch this one again :-D

The City of Lost Children (1995) is another great Caro and Jeunet movie you might like. A similar sense of whimsy in a sci-fi/fantasy setting, though a bit darker than Amelie.

Pajander

And Delicatessen. To me all three are basically equally good.

Nick Sneddon

It's one of the greatest films of all time, it's absolutely perfect

I just love this movie. Just a feel good movie with great editing

One of my favorite movies ever. I remember when it was released, I kinda dragged all my friends that hadn't seen it, one by one, to watch the movie. I watched it 8 times at the cinema. It just makes me happy inside. Was really surprised to see you guys react to it, and it reminded me of that, just enjoying it with friends. Thank you :)

THIS COUNTS AS A ROMANTIC COMEDY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't seen a huge number of french movies, but this felt like the mostest french movie I've ever seen :D It's got that existential-ASMR style, where all of the little things in life trigger your tingles. I liked 'Cyrano du Bergerac' with Gerard Depardieu and 'Les Miserables' (1998) with Liam Neeson. Simone, my mother's old office had a plushy office mascot that anyone who travelled would take along and take pictures with it visiting places. My mother curated the photo album.

If you like the lead actor, Audrey Tautou, and the director, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, I'd recommend "A Very Long Engagement" (2004). They teamed up again in that film. It a simillar story telling style and visual approach. It's a very romantic drama with solid comedic relief set in World War I France.

Another (somewhat more obscure) foreign film that I think has a very similar feel to this that you might really enjoy is called Tampopo. A loose story about a woman who wants to learn to become a great ramen chef is tied together with all kinds of strange, funny vignettes about food. I highly recommend it.

I love that Jeunet pivoted from directing Alien:Resurrection to this. I mean, say what you want about the Alien franchise as a whole, but you can’t deny the pedigrees of the directors involved.

Somehow I thought that Canadians were all fully bilingual (English and French) by government educational policy?

Dustin Lollar

Jean-Pierre Jeunet's newest film Bigbug is out on Netflix now. It’s great too.

nossieboy

Aww I love this film

Jean-Dominic Lapointe

Governmental services must be provided in both languages, but most Canadians are unilingual, either French or English, despite classes in school. If you go to big cities like Montreal, that’s where you’ll find most bilingual people. (Or Ottawa obviously, since Feb government is situated there). French Canadians need to learn English (even if many don’t) to have a successful career, English Canadians don’t need to learn French to thrive in Canada.

"Smiles of a Summer Night" (1955), written and directed by Ingmar Bergman, is a classic romantic comedy that isn't likely to win any Patreon polls. But, Simone might really enjoy watching this one on her own. It's outstanding in every way. The writing, cinematography, and performances are all next level. You may not find it on Amazon or Netflix, either. But, you can usually buy it for a decent price online.

Yeah, in my top 10 of all time, for sure. Although, G&S would really love the director's two films before this, especially 'Children of Lost Children'. Both are dark dystopian films, and VERY different in tone than 'Amelie', but awesome. Both of those films were shot on soundstages and the director ended up pretty much hating shooting 'Amelie' outside around Paris because he couldn't control the weather, lighting, etc. The director has a brand new film on Netflix called 'Big Bug' which looks really interesting. Something about a family with household robots during an android uprising.

In addition to Tampopo, which I mentioned above, I was rewatching this video and also remembered: this is a very dark movie, and intense, but the guy who plays Nino, the boyfriend, is also a director. He made a great movie about three young men who are sort of running around getting into trouble called "La Haine." Steel yourself, but you should definitely check it out.
