Firefly - Episode 1 - Patreon Version

Comments

Herbert Goat

Hello Simone and George, so very excited to join you at long last from over here in the southern hemisphere. Looking forward to hearing your full reactions. Keep on being so enjoyable and entertaining. Thank you!

Patrick

I must have been in a bad mood or something, or the Western music turned me off...because tied to watch this show many years ago and gave up after 15 mins. Idk why, it's fantastic! It's extremely disheartening though to already know it's only 1 season long. That's criminal.

Amelie W

Fun fact: the word for strawberry in Swedish is jordgubbe, "earth-man". Something to take with you on the journey from Earth-that-was.

Theadora

I couldn't watch the pilot "Serenity" either, but I really liked "The Train Job". Go figure.

Kron0n

Yay, finally. The first ep is actually called the train job. The basics are that the superpowers all kind of merged in the future. Cultures are Hodge podge.

Twiska Brand

That was an episode that the network made them air first. The actual first episode was always supposed to be the extra long episode called Serenity.

Twiska Brand

With you watching Cabin in the Woods and Firefly I'm sure it not the only one asking "wen buffy?"

JediLounger

Watching it with you guys now. I promise the Chinese is not random. There is a reason, which I am sure some other person in the comments will spoil for you. I will say just keep watching.

Martin Nicholls

Yay, correct episode order. Kinda wanted Expanse s1 first but more than happy with this (and yes, you should watch the movie after - though you're gonna wanna).

Onno Smits

Hell yeah! I'm so so so happy you guys are watching this! I can't wait to get home and watch this with you. ❤

Githerax

Simone, I agree, few shows intro characters so well. Usually first seasons are awkward and the actors haven't settled into their characters.

William

When you go to a restaurant and the waiter brings you your delicious meal and you say "Oh Shinny" you know you have watched too much Firefly :)

BHillzebub

Yeah "Shiny" is very popular among Browncoats (Firefly fans). Another popular phrase is "Fuck Fox" tho I'm not sure where that comes from as I've watched this series countless times and haven't heard any character say it once! :P

JayF

You will come to love all of the actors and actresses that play the main characters. The good news is that all of them have had long and successful careers. It's interesting that Simone mentioned it having a Saving Private Ryan feel at the beginning. One of the actors had a brief role in that movie. In the outro you figured out that Alan Tudyk was in Dodgeball. He has been in so many movies it's ridiculous. A lot of it is voice acting for animated movies or characters. I look forward to the rest of the series and the followup to it which hopefully will include movies with the cast. Edit - Oh and Nathan Fillion (Capt Reynolds) is Canadian as well.

The Inedible Mattman!

I think this might be one of the best sci-fi shows of the last 20 years. In the list of top 5, it has to be. Or at least in the conversation. I know you guys are going to LOVE this!

Andrew Smith

I agree with you. Fantastic show. I think the Expanse is also up there for great Sci fi

mojo shivers

I miss this show so much. I still wonder what would’ve been if it had continued for the planned number of seasons. Every character had much more to explore.

JoeySnowyNoey

Cool! Haven’t ever seen this so I’m excited! Also how do you request? I wanna request Looking For Alaska, for the TV request. Its a limited series that I feel like you guys would really enjoy.

Maxwell Long

I'm so happy you're reacting to this show

Torsten Maekler

Unfortunately for Simone, there will be Reivers shown. But it is very few and very little and it is mostly for jump-scare. So you are not in danger of puking ... this is after all made to be a fun series.

Wally Hartshorn

Re: horses and other low tech stuff Keep in mind that they are working on the frontier. Cars and other high tech stuff requires a whole network of factories to produce. All you need is a pair of horses to produce more horses. Also, if you’re not one of the powerful, you’re going to be settling on planets that are less than ideal, thus the arid, dusty conditions.

hurryupmode

Yo let's go! I loved this show and picked up the comics so the adventures continued! (did the same with ATLA)

Florian Hoyer

oh hell yeah. you MUST see the movie after in the end that finish the story i hope xD

wroot

Soundtrack indeed gives strong StarCraft vibes :)

A Red Mage Named Blue

Glad you're watching through all of this, please tell me you'll be watching Serenity once you've finished (It's best to have the show still in your minds when you watch it)

Torsten Maekler

Loved the longer Extro and talking about the episode at the end. Not the usual 3-5 minute wrap up. Intro and Extro had been longer in your earlier recordings... .

Zerocyde

The whole speaking Chinese sometimes thing is an old cyberpunk\future dystopian trope. As the world kinda dissolves the two main super powers kinda spread and meld into one. You'll see it in anything similar as far back as Bladerunner if not farther.

Tomas

Time to watch Firefly again (for like the tenth time) =D Great show, I'm sure you'll love it!

Gryff

Honestly, once you get into it I wouldnt mind you watching an episode followed by a long talk and analysis about that episode. I've watched folks take notes on this show and dig deep into it. Also about that tag line, Fox completely mishandled the advertisement and everything else but casting for this show.

JLee

Just finished playing The Outer Worlds and hadn't realized how much I wanted to rewatch this! So happy for y'all to watch it for the first time!

Steven Rose

I know I’m going to trigger a lot of people, but this show is overrated… I think a lot of people view Firefly with nostalgia goggles. I’ll admit I didn’t try to watch it until several years after it aired and I could just not get into it.

Foodassassin4life

If you love this then at some point in time please watch cowboy bebop (the anime not the netflix show)

Alan Kobb

Why the random Chinese? Because you're not permitted to curse in English on TV. In the story, we "used up" Earth, so a Chinese-American alliance (The Alliance) found new worlds to settle. In the day and age, most people know at least some Chinese. Anytime you don't understand it, it's probably because the cast mispronounced it. They got tape recordings of their Chinese lines, but often didn't get it right. Anyone who's watched enough Joss Whedon knows that he likes to screw with the audience. Mal's little joke at the doctor's expsnse was really a big joke on the audience. Gotcha! Mal's hostility to Shepherd Book - If you look back to the war scene at the start, Mal kisses a cross necklace before going into battle. After he has lost the war, he is openly hostile to religion. It's not explained, but obvious that Mal has lost faith in a big way. One of my favorite scenes is the last one with the Shepherd and Inara. After talking about the terrible things that he saw, he bows his head to cry, and she puts her head on his forehead. At that point the angle changes to the side, and both are in shadow, and it looks like the companion is giving absolution to the preacher, forgiving him for his sins. Quite a moving scene, and shot beautifully. I'm so happy that you're watching this. Get ready to become Browncoats!

Haye Zeus

This pilot is great and made me excited for this show. Then the rest of the show happened. I don’t think it’s entirely bad but I do feel the show is overhyped. I don’t think I would have wanted it to go on with the way it was going. Like other Whedon shows I probably would have dropped it. But we’ll never know unfortunately. The movie is fun tho.

Andrew T

First reaction of Firefly I've seen with multiple StarCraft references. I'm here for it.

Finnulf

The long-running rumour is that this series is based upon Whedon's college role-playing game that he ran... which was allegedly Traveller, Marc Miller's sci-fi RPG that's been around since '77. Again, great reaction vid, love you two!

Tomas

So WHY do you feel it is overrated? What about it do you not like (and how much of it have you seen)? I'm interested to hear some in-depth reasons than just that you didn't get into it, as it doesn't say much. I disagree with the belief that nostalgia would be the reason why this show is very popular, mainly because of the fact that not a whole lot of people saw it when it ran; it only started to become really popular like a decade after, due to word of mouth. Tons of people who watch it for the first time today, 20 years after its making love it and become ardent fans. Personally, I think this show is beloved because it is a rare gem, with a cool setting and interesting plot, characters with a lot of dimensionality and interpersonal chemistry, and have aged extremely well compared to a lot of sci-fi.

Eleven

i agree, but disagree. i'd love to see Simone and George watch the English-dubbed Cowboy Bebop and then watch the Netflix cowboy bebop- just as most of us have, falling in love with the anime characters only to have a either good or bad, but visceral, reaction to the Netflix take. which i personally enjoyed

Sean Novack

"No wonder this fucking won, it's SO GOOD!" ...and another Browncoat is born!

Spooky Dooky

Hmm.... double episodes per video? But still full length? Ok I can deal with that lol.

Pajander

This really is such a great pilot. Hits the ground running, manages to introduce NINE different main characters and gets you invested in them in just 90 minutes. So the network decided not to air this one at all because it was "too slow", makes sense.

Spooky Dooky

You don't know how happy I am that you guys are watching this now. OMG I love this show so much. I probably know every line I've seen it so many times.

Spooky Dooky

Reavers: Horny Space Vampire Canibals

Spooky Dooky

In this universe, when man-kind left Earth, the two main space fairing nations were the US and China. Also it helps get around the censorship board if they swear in Chinese.

Gryff

I know theres a lot of excited people out there who want to share the verse with these two, but please be mindful of your comments and let the show do the explaining and revealing at its pace. Spoiling any of the mystique of the show with an offhand comment that they WILL read would be mighty unkind.

Robert Hyler

This is one of my favorite all-time shows. The characters are so rich and developed. I am excited to watch it through your eyes. The side by side watching with you will give me another chance to watch one of my favorite shows again. Thanks.

Nogusta

I'm so glad you are doing this one!

gleeful_turtle

came for ATLA, staying for Firefly :)

Eleven

to be fair, the chinese-explaining was more of a "in-commentary" sort of thing on the special features of DVDs, or at least that's how i found out-- maybe it's been too long since i've been in this particular 'verse?

Eleven

i agree with this completely, and share the sentiment :) i found Simone and George thru the Fight Club react- and they are adorable friends with such great chemistry and so much fun! i'm so happy i get to watch my favorite space-western with these folx!

Rezblade

Hooray glad you guys liked it , you both are like me , now with Alan I really think you will like him in “ Death at a Funeral “ you will be falling off your chairs , and for Nathan his Tv show “ Castle “ does a lot of reference to “ Firefly “ which makes it funny !!! Enjoy party people

Chris Lüders

I think you'll love this series and it was a shame that the series was cancelled. Even it's just half a season and afterwards the movie 'Serenity', I really think you will enjoy it. 😊😎🤠

Torsten Maekler

Judging from the enthusiasm Simone showed at the end of this episode, she will probably start writing books and new episodes for this series after they have watched "Serenity", send them to Joss Whedon and they will begin producing Season Two together 😎

Jim Johnson

All the talk of this being like a western made me realize you guys haven’t really done any. Western poll sometime maybe?

Logan Kerlee

:D Very happy that you both enjoyed the beginning of this show! I'm also very happy to be watching it again after a good number of years. Let's keep this going! :)

Kim-Christian Nielsen

Pretty sure Starcraft Wings of Liberty took a lot of inspiration from Firefly. Maybe Starcraft 1998 was inspired by Firefly. They do have similar vibes.

Logan Kerlee

Firefly was first released in 2002, so if anything it'd be the other way around.

Zerocyde

Anyone know when the next episode will be? I need to know what day to call in sick to work, lol.

Drew Acheson

For more Joss Wheadon you should watch Dollhouse. And for more sci-fi space shows you should watch the newer Battlestart Galactica (not the one from the 70s)

Sean

Not sure if anyone has commented this yet but heres some back story for Firefly. Firefly was created around the peak of Angel's run and a Fox representive approached Joss Whedon hoping to establish a contract for a new show. So Joss created this pilot. Fox was unsure about it because the pilot was long and they wanted something more "fun" and less dramatic. So Joss spent to weekend writing a new pilot which ends up becoming the episode Train Job. Fox fully greenlit the show with that episode but still had absolutely no idea how to market the show so they proceeded to market it as a comedy (hence the comedic description). After that they proceeded to feature the episodes out of order causing the timeline to get severely messy and also placed the show on Friday at the time known as "The Friday night death slot" because shows placed at this time always end up getting severly poor viewership because people just aren't tv at that time. After getting through a little over half the season they cancelled the show and only showed 11 out of the 14 episodes featuring this episode last and featuring the last 3 episodes with the DVD box set. Through word of mouth those who ended up becoming Browncoats (what we hardcore Firefly fans call ourselves) started introducing the show to litterally everyone causing the DVD sales to skyrocket and a petition set up to bring back Firefly. They weren't able to get the show back on the air but it was enough to get Fox to sell the rights for a movie adaptation to Universal, hence Serenity.

Thomas Yanez

I've seen "Firefly" a thousand times, going back to when "Serenity" (the movie) was released and I have never heard that awful, misleading tagline. God, Fox sucked.

Garrett Grantham

I almost forgot how aggressively incorrect the gun handling in this show was. Awesome story, fantastic characters, but that alliance agent’s super exaggerated tea-cupping makes me cringe.

Matt Fong

As I’ve heard it, the show takes place after earth, where we have over populated the planet. The two biggest superpowers were United States and China, which is why you hear so much Chinese. They also did it to evade censorship with the cussing.

Dylan Platt

Holy moly, "meet the most spaced-out crew in the galaxy" is way, way beyond just a bad tagline for this show. As you astutely pointed out, it makes it sound like a stoner thing. I'd be surprised at how aggressively bad it is if all the marketing and other business decisions surrounding the series hadn't been just as awful. Glad you liked it though!! Very much looking forward to seeing y'all watch through this... Kinda brutal to make it a Patreon exclusive, but I'll be damned if it didn't work on me so I can't blame ya :D

Stoodles

I joined so I could watch this again. I've watched the first 2 videos. Fun story. My dad (62) hates sci-fi and space tv shows and movies. I tried for a long time to convince him to watch this, and finally one Christmas holiday I got him to watch the first episode. We didn't get off the sofa until we had finished all 14 episodes and the movie. Now we have it on in the background every year at Christmas.

Garrick Smalley

Hello Simone (& George) That syringe you saw when the crew was contemplating getting caught by reavers contained a poison that she would inject in herself then the poison would kill anybody that raped Inara.
