Godrick

lol the second hand embarrassment was very real for George in this one

Mike Kay

WOW WOW....I seriously enjoyed t his movie and watching it with both Simone and George as well for the first time. I'm so upset at myself for waiting so long to finally watch this awesome flick.

By Grapthar's Hammer, what a member!

One of my all time favourite acting performances. Right up there with Anthony Hopkins in Silence Of The Lambs and Kathy Bates in Misery.

Ron Moses

I enjoyed this movie and I felt kinda sick about liking it. I'm not looking forward to revisiting it.

Tom Smith

I believe you're right, there is an alternate universe in the comics where Bruce is killed and Bruce's father becomes Batman and his mother becomes the Joker.

Christopher Feiertag

Great reaction to a great movie. I would suggest to put Martin Scorsese‘s 1976’s „Taxi Driver“ on your watchlist, because a.) it’s kind of a predecessor in spirit to „Joker“ and b.) it‘s one of the best movies ever made. (and Scorsese‘s Opus Magnum)

Nick Scholz

Yes it is the Flashpoint universe and while there are similarities between Bruce and his father, it is there differences that make that Batman quite compelling.

aarswft

"is this true to canon?" No. Almost nothing in this film matches any existing canon involving Batman or Joker. This film could have and should have been named anything else.

Valyrian

The neighbour is definitely dead - but what about her daughter? 😬

George Baxter

I genuinely dislike this movie. Between the direct rip offs of Taxi Driver and the absolute nihilism I just think Joker feeds all the worst instincts of people without any sort of rebuttal. Society is terrible?! Well I guess we’ll have to take your word for it Joker as there’s no Batman in this story to confront you. And your solution?? Shoot a man in the face live on TV, stir up trouble, movie ends. Dark Knight presents this same nihilism but balances it with hope and sincerity. Also, for some reason this film is set in 1970 (taxi driver) because Philips can’t claim this societal take in the present day. Commenting on our times would have made this film genuinely relevant. Instead it’s a shock and awe film design to appeal to our cynicism. Bravo I guess…

Pajander

What's with the beeps? Timestamps somehow got scrambled?

ChickensAreRacist

Of course we can’t know, but I disagree. He only killed folks who did him wrong (except for perhaps the lady at the very end).

Jack Burton

Good lord the comments section on this one is awful. So many self-righteous know-it-alls. I like the movie more now seeing all these people get butt-hurt about it. Schadenfreude lobe goes brrr.

JokerDanny

Please react to Gotham, or please add it to future polls, it ran for a5 seasons and I think you two will really like it. it was a great show with fantastic performances by the whole cast.

Daniel Bjork

I think The King of Comedy is a better comparison for Joker, though both movies are similar to Taxi Driver as well.

Bill Pearson

I think the movie A Few Good Men would be a good one to follow this. Not because it has anything to do with the Joker, but because I would like to see you two react to it. It is a quality movie.

Tariq Amin

Amazing movie and great reaction. People sometimes forget that in 3rd world societies like Gotham city, police can often be more trouble than benefit. As a single black mother, she did not want more trouble. I think she just kept her mouth shut, and didn't tell anyone about it. Joker did not kill her.

Patrick Evans

I believe Todd Phillips said that originally they had a scene of the Neighbor watching his appearance on Murray's show but that they removed it to leave in the ambiguity.

E.P.B.F.

This is a movie easy to criticize or even outright dislike for the non-canonical liberties it takes with its source material as well as the oblivious and rather substantial 'loans' it takes from other films, in particular the Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy, both starring Robert DeNiro in the lead playing a character that's mentally unstable. Joker walks right up to the line between homage and plagiarism and then starts twirling pirouettes along it all the the way to the end credits. What saves it ultimately besides Phoenix's spectacular performance is its self awareness. Joker doesn't try to hide the fact that its borrowing from earlier movies, and which ones, in fact it _counts_ on the audience making the connection. That is, no pun intended, the (meta) joke Todd layers into this otherwise grim flick. Just my 0.02 YMMV of course.

Tyler Foster

One pointedly negative comment was enough to act like people are trashing the movie? Even if it got a bunch of likes, it's still just one comment and a couple of people underneath it.

Barstoolteacher

It does match cannon by having an unreliable narrator. You can’t really trust anything in the movie except him killing Murray because you see it being broadcast. Like Joker says, if he’s going to have a past, he prefers it to be multiple choice.

stephen phillips

you guys Really Really need to check the movie Taxi Driver from 1976 with Robert D. there is some influence from that movie here. the finger gun is a reference from taxi driver. both movies are about the lonely guy.

JH

Honestly, most of this film is done from the unreliable narrator perspective, so the film gives many suggestions to question whether or not the biggest moments in the film with Arthur were even real, save the moments where reality is apparently evident. It’s possible to question whether or not Arthur even had that run in with Thomas Wayne in the mens room—- which stands in stark contrast with his Murder of Murray on live TV… when it comes to very intimate moments, personally involving Arthur, the film begs the audience to question if this is real, or just Arthur’s interpretation of reality, from the seat of his escalating breakage from sanity… one of the reason why the scene was cut that shows Sophie(the neighbor; Zazie Beats) at home watching him on Murray’s show, was because that would have taken attention away from the film’s climatic scene—- which was Arthur not only accepting who he is(and his broken view of an already sad and twisted reality), but also, fully committing to how he sees himself in it, wholeheartedly, with Murray as the “deserving” sacrifice, on the alter of his final transformation.

Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe is coming to Paramount+ June 23.

michael clarke

i actually didnt really like this movie. i was very meh on the whole thing. seeing you guys enjoy it the way you did helps me appreciate it more.

Jonathon Ashcraft

As is obvious in the comments. It's a love it or hate it movie. I love it but it's also very difficult for me personally to watch all the way through so I appreciate the slimmed down version being available here on patreon! you guys are always a blast to hang out with ... vicariously lol!

August King

I think the neighbor is dead. In this kind of world, in that kind of neighborhood, it might be weeks before the neighbor's body is found. Also, he didn't kill the daughter, he just left her and she was there, sleeping next to her mother's body until she was discovered by the police who came to investigate Arthur's home after he was arrested.

Garrett Grantham

So when Joker is seen last in Arkham attending his last therapy session, I got the very distinct impression that he literally just thought up the entire movie in his head, and when his therapist asks him what he was laughing at, he simply says he thought of a joke she wouldn’t understand, that joke being his entire made up back story. Definitely reminds me of The Killing Joke, solidifying that we’re not supposed to know the Joker’s true back story.

Marko T.

You should react to Modern Times (1936). Its the Charlie Chaplin movie they were watching at the theatre. One of the best comedies of all time.
