Yes please! They’ve done Man of Steel now but I want the rest… All the way up to The Flash which I DID NOT LIKE but I would watch again with the homies.

Glass (+ the Machines of God)

simone still believing thomas wayne is arthur's dad even though the movie makes it ridiculously clear that wasn't the case is hilarious and sad

Allen Pass

I hope the Joker 2 reveals if Thomas Wayne was the father or not. A lot of people seem to forget that Thomas Wayne owns the Daily Planet and numerous orphanages across Gotham and could have easily forged documents to prove Arthur wasn't his son.

2 years too late, but yeah if the movie established anything, it's that nothing was for sure real or a fabrication. Every single thing that happened is questionable, the entire contrast of Bruce and Joker (which is just a device for him to mold Bruce into what he expects him to be, while winking at the lore), especially the last scene where he leaves and insanely stylized clinic with such remarkably contrasting foodprints... this alone screams "we're just portraying his transition" over some concrete evidence. The neighbor is absolutely not dead. She didn't mock him, if we're going by reasonable heuristics, she is as alive as anyone who never crossed Arthur. Full-on with Simone on all of this. And yeah, she could have just pummeled George's defense into submission with "but rich people" - this is how you should approach everything, repeatedly. Some flimsy, very likely hallucinated records? Possibly being merely a representation of him accessing repressed memories? Nah. Even if they were real, how fucking easy would it have been for a cousin of a Wayne's cousin's cousin to just dump a truckload of money on just about any person ever and make it fake? It's not like we're dealing with carbon-dating equivalents or reliable metadata here, we got exactly zero clues about her lying or not. We don't even know whether she's dead. Whether any of it happened, whether it's a premonition, or whether we should assume the worst. And it kind of doesn't matter, because the one thing we realize at the end, is that whatever happened turned Arthur into Joker.

To answer a question, this movie is as canonical as any of the Joker's origin stories. He has had many names, many faces, many tragic accidents, dead wives, parents, kids; he's been Batman's brother and his parents' killer and many more. He's joked he likes his past to be multiple choice - we see hints of this in Dark Knight with his various stories about his scars. The movie sort of bases its mood and theme on the Joker's backstory from the comic The Killing Joke, where a crappy world craps on a man until he snaps, but the stories have nothing in common. People can just make up anything and it'll fit the Joker. Maybe the character is just a clown mask.

All Thomas would need is two friendly doctors who can be convinced/bribed to sign off on Penny being mentally ill, which I'm guessing this was in the 1950s when a dishonest man could pull that off very easily. Then there's no need to fake anything other than her illness itself, and since she's declared mentally ill nothing she says is going to prove otherwise. She can be institutionalized and lobotomized and forced to legally adopt her own child under the pretext of managing her delusion, all with authority, and then there's no trail left that can possibly embarrass Thomas (until DNA testing is invented). Heck, Arthur even falls for it. That we don't know for sure works well with the general Joker lore, too.

Future poll ideas: One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and Girl, Interrupted. Both focus on mental illness.

Now that you guys watched this trite garbage of a movie, ya’ll need to check out the movies that it rip…i mean, it was inspired by. Taxi Driver and King of Comedy.

Lorenzo Baxter

The note he wrote down said "The worst part about mental illness is that people expect you to behave as if you don't." Which couldn't be more true. This is hardly a DC movie. It could've been called anything else without the DC trivia and it would've been just as effective. This movie is so damned sad because on the surface people would be scared of him. I get why, but we really shouldn't be. It's not a boogeyman story about what happens when you push someone too far. It's a call for compassion and support to people who suffer everyday. Not to mention the lack of people actually willing to put in that effort and help. This movie really do be a tragedy 😔 Also yes the point of this is that there is unreliable narration. The picture when he was painting his makeup was meant to be one last piece of evidence that maybe Arthur really is Thomas' son. But its impossible to know because there are signs pointing both ways.

Garrett Mazzuca

Definitely enjoyed this one. Joaquin Phoenix is always interesting to watch. I would recommend checking out Parasite from the same year as it deals with classism that Joker touches on as well.

Jeff I.

Awesome reaction to a great movie! I couldn't help but think of Inigo from the Princess Bride, when Arthur confronted Thomas Wayne and said, "My name is Arthur. My mother is Penny Fleck." ...I wanted to end that with "Prepare to die!" :-)

Marko T.

Great movie. Joaquin Phoenix is so good in this. I have seen some complain that this Joker is not like the comic version but it doesn't bother me. I like that there are different versions of characters. They are making a sequel and its called Joker: Folie a Deux. Also there were interesting rumors about it few days ago. Hollywood Reporter had an article saying that Lady Gaga might be playing Harley Quinn and it will be a musical. I don't know what to think about that.

ChickensAreRacist

I don’t think he killed his neighbor. He seemed (til the last scene’s implication) to only kill folks who did him wrong. And his neighbor didn’t seem to ever do that. She was nice, even when scared of him as he was in her apartment. I do like the immediate scene after he grabs the camera and they’re announcing that Murray was shot live on his show. The many screens panned out. Clint Eastwood was shown advocating for the NRA, and the energizer bunny commercial was on… and that commercial always said ‘it just keeps going and going and going’, so it seems to me some commentary on, well, you know.

Jonathan Ly

definitely watch flashpoint paradox animated film from DC. this is exactly where Thomas becomes batman. its SOOO good. The Animated DC universe is so much better.

JediLounger

If you want more Phoenix then some examples would be Her (2013) and You Were Never Really Here (2017). He also has a great turn as a supporting role in 8MM (1999), a very twisted Nick Cage movie. The Sisters Brothers (2018) and Inherent Vice (2014) are also worth watching.

Jay Davis

I'd recommend We Own The Night and Walk The Line for more Joaquin

Marko T.

You need to watch Batman (1989). Jack Nicholson is very good as Joker. I also recommend the 1966 movie. Its a great comedy.

Odd Thomas

The music used in the iconic dance scene raised eyebrows in the UK. It was from a Gary Glitter track and he...let's just say he fell from grace with a crash. Google it

Torstein Skurve

I love this movie so much! As for any of this being canon, the Joker doesn't really have a canon origin. I think there's a joker quote saying something like "When it comes to origins I prefer multiple choice". I don't think he even has a canon name..

ChickensAreRacist

I’m excited for it whether it’s a musical or not. I trust Joaquin’s taste in scripts. And there’s a bridge in this first Joker movie where he says ‘He couldn’t carry a tune to save his life’. He’s got music in his head that he dances to, I can see it. And excited to see it.

TGrimace

I believe the official DC canon on the origin of the Joker is that it's unknowable. There have been many different origin stories from DC on him. None of them confirmed as 'true'. I believe the Joker in The Killing Joke said it best: "If I'm going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice"

Jack Burton

Arthur Fleck isn't Thomas Wayne's son. She was certifiably insane and created a reality that didn't exist. Neighbor isn't dead. That would have been hinted at. People in poor neighborhoods in this world don't call the cops... so it's safe to assume in that movie world she didn't call the cops. He was in love with her. So, like the small guy that treated him well at work, he didn't kill her. It doesn't track.

JokerDanny

Please react to Gotham, or please add it to future polls, it ran for a5 seasons and I think you two will really like it. it was a great show with fantastic performances by the whole cast.

Joe Kerr

"The worst part of having a mental illness is people expect you to behave as if you don't!" Arthur Fleck/Joker 2019

JLee

For more Joaquin Phoenix, go watch his interview with David Letterman from 2009.

Monica Alarcon

Okay now please watch "Grouch" starring David Harbour...

Odd Thomas

If you haven't seen the Suicide Squad films then I highly recommend them. Harley Quinn is the mvp, though, not Jared Leto's cringe-bad Joker

JarHead0351

Sorry you on your own - watched it once and that all I am willing to do on this movie - Yes it is a must see but only once so enjoy it but "I am skipping it...

PIG

Good observations about Clint and Energizer.

The Maestro

the neighbor isn't dead because she did nothing to harm him, everyone else he killed had wronged him in some way in his eyes. Also I'd assume she would have known that he was unwell and thought he was just lost and I don't think someone would call the police after someone just left after mistaking your apartment for there own, they also weren't complete strangers as in they'd seen each other before

Marko T.

I'm not a big fan of the first movie but Margot Robbie is great Harley Quinn. Birds of Prey is probably my favorite DCEU movie.

Jim Frykman

I think George was a little quick to dismiss the cover story hypothesis. I think their intent was to leave it ambiguous with not enough proof to prove anything one way or the other.

Robb

More of Joaquin Phoenix: Her(2013) to go to a completely different movie would love a reaction to that

August King

I think the neighbor is dead. In this kind of world, in that kind of neighborhood, it might be weeks before the neighbor's body is found. Also, he didn't kill the daughter, he just left her and she was there, sleeping next to her mother's body until she was discovered by the police who came to investigate Arthur's home after he was arrested.

Eleven

honestly, as a fellow mental illness sufferer- poor with poorly funded resources only available- and with much of the world seemingly ignoring my existence, i was nearly in tears for most of the movie. the escalation and dissociation makes sense when you find out your world was a lie and you feel non existent. sometimes the only action is a reaction. not that i see Joker as a hero, i just wish someone gave an actual FUCK about Arthur, so Joker maybe never came to be

Chris Lüders

First of all, it's very good that you got it with the handwriting, George. Because it was all there that it was just made up by his mother and no, Simone, it's easy to think that rich people can do whatever they want, but even they can't do everything. Also, it would cost many times more to forge documents, bribe people and do everything right instead of just paying a settlement and having that debited through a corporate account or a lawyer. Regarding the neighbor, I don't think he killed her like he didn't kill Gary, and for the same reason: she was never bad to him, in fact she didn't really know him at all.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

I agree with Simone about the neighbor (that's Domino in Deadpool btw), one thing about all the people we know for a fact that he killed, the three frat boy trader assholes, the other clown (who played the killer in True Detective btw), even his mother, they all did something to hurt him. Gary for instance, he let go, because Gary never did anything to deliberately hurt him, and neither did the neighbor. However, I think that after he becomes full on THE Joker, that sense of morality might be gone, he seems more like a full on nihilist by that point, I mean Murray did intentionally mock him on national television, so from Arthur's stand point he had it coming, but he also definitely killed that relatively innocent lady at the end, but it could be argued that she, for one, reminded him of the woman from earlier who "never listens", or, two, she simply stood in the way of his self-actualization. Wow, so there IS going to be a sequel, that's news to me and I'm all for it, can't even begin to praise Joaquin Phoenix, he's a fuckin master. Speaking of which, you guys NEED to watch "The Master", Phillip Seymour Hoffman is also fuckin amazing in that. And for more unhinged brilliance from Joaquin Phoenix I also recommend "You Were Never Really Here".

Noe Ramirez

I hate this movie. 🤣 glad people enjoy it but I can't stand this film.

Kate Suhr

I agree. I mean I like the idea of that's what created the joker but hate the makeup and clothes joker wears.

Trepanation21

When you see him in the dressing room before going on live TV, you'll notice the angles of his mouth makeup isn't symmetrical (his right side points farther up, while his left side points more lateral). At the end when he's standing on the hood of the police car with his arms outstretched above the crowd, he holds his arms in the same angles as the mouth makeup. No big deal, but a fun little touch nonetheless ;D

Marko T.

I think the animated series is the best version of Batman. The art style and the music by Shirley Walker are so good. Danny Elfman did the intro theme. I don't think Mark Hamill Joker is very similar to this. He is more like the comic version. The series has some weaker episodes early on but it gets better. Mask of the Phantasm animated movie is based on it.

Theoshin

Please give us more updates on the Batman TAS, i loved that show back in the day

JarHead0351

had to wait to watch it with you both - great reaction by both !!
