R. Lee Ermey was a real drill instructor and his performance was (mostly) unscripted. And yes, it really is like that! Most impressively he also played a drill instructor in an old sci-fi show called “Space: Above & Beyond” where he did a similar performance but without the swearing! If you have not watched “Good Morning Vietnam” you really should. Great juxtaposition of the comedy and violence. Finally, there is a great book call ‘Nam’ by Mark Baker. He interviewed loads of veterans; there are no names or dates. Some are a few sentences and some are pages long. The most insightful book into the war I have come across.

The drill instructors are hard as nails. Physical contact is not permitted. It may happen. I've never seen it or heard of it. But it has always been frowned upon. Even the heavily decorated General Patton was punished for slapping the enlisted soldier in the infirmary. Why was the NVA referred to as Charlie? - I haven't looked that up. Best guess - it's a reference to the Charlie Chan movies. OR... Charlie is C (obviously) in the phonetic alphabet. C could be for Cong. Why not just say Cong, then? Couldn't tell you, so 2nd theory probably isn't accurate. But I based that on modern day enemy identifying as "Tango." ...T for Terrorist. "Tango down." And so forth. And lastly, my stepfather earned a silver star in Vietnam. It was definitely trauma inducing. Booby traps everywhere, always wondering if a civilian was going to blow you up.. he was quite good at hiding his trauma later in civilian life. The only thing he couldn't get away from was being woken up. I learned early to call his name from the bedroom doorway. One time I shook his leg to wake him and he lunged up ready to fight and on full alert, and honestly seemed confused about where he was for a few seconds.

It isn't quite so bad with DIs these days. It is still abusive, but they actually have a pretty strict list of things that are forbidden these days.

There's a lot of fun and interesting facts about this movie - like the fact it was shot entirely in England around London because Kubrick didn't like to travel. The army base is clearly an old WW2-era RAF base if you know what to look for, all the Vietnam scenes were shot in London (up until a few months ago I lived on the exact spot many of those scenes were shot around Beckton). They had to import a huge number of palm trees to dress it up to look more tropical.

Only the second time I've seen this. I respect Kubrick as a filmmaker and LOVE The Shining but FMJ does nothing for me. Too bleak, too slow, nobody to root for. A better Matthew Modine film is Cutthroat Island - such a bizarrely hated film. It's a better pirate movie than the POTC franchise and has insane stunts, almost no CGI.

Any chance of you guys doing Blackhawk Down as well?

There's a wonderful film documentary channel on YouTube called "Cinema Tyler", and one of his videos discusses how R. Lee Ermey made the journey from a Vietnam-era Marine Corps drill instructor to Hollywood actor (he appeared in over 50 movies and TV shows, including Apocalypse Now and Se7en). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xR2qWrUs1o

It was based on the short story part timers. The short story is divided into three parts. The movie contained only the first two parts. As the story continues the writing and thoughts are more disordered and simple. Kubrick was warned not to meet the author before filming the movie but he insisted on it. Apparently the author scared the shit out of him.

Charlie comes from Viet Cong or in the phonetic alphabet Victor Charlie, then shortened to Charlie. G**k comes from the Korean War. According to Wikipedia: "That "gook" comes from the Korean word "국" (guk), meaning "country", "한국" (hanguk), meaning "Korea", or "미국" (miguk), meaning "America". For example, U.S. soldiers might have heard locals saying miguk (미국), referring to Americans, and misinterpreted this as "Me gook.""

Why do they shave their head? The primary reason is lice, but yes, conformity is also a reason

I'm not military, but I do sort of think that the DI persona is one they put on. I've seen interviews with Ermey and he actually seems quite pleasant when he doesn't have to yell at hapless recruits. One person who you wouldn't think was a sergeant was Bob Ross, yes, the soft spoken guy who painted on PBS. I don't think he was a DI but he was a sergeant and it apparently involved a lot of yelling at people. Part of the reason he started the painting show was because he didn't want to yell at people ever again.

As a former military member, yes this is the most accurate portrayal of Recruit Training I’ve seen. Except, they cannot touch you. There are other ways of making you pay physically and mentally though…

do more kubrick please. should try his comedy "dr strange love or: how i learned to stop worrying and love the bomb"

And when introduced to the soldier lexicon it got extended to all Asians through the "all look the same" syndrome.

The no touching rules started being implemented in the 80's. I don't know if straight-on gut punches were allowed before this, but there was definitely a lot of physicality before that (from what I've read).

Craig Rhymer

The origin of the term 'Charlie' comes from the ICAO alphabet ... (A) lpha, (B) ravo, (C) harlie, (D) elta, and on up to (Z) ulu ... the Viet Cong were the 'VC' or Victor Charlie ... later shortened to just Charlie

Rob Church

Bob Ross was a Drill Instructor if I'm not mistaken.

A thing to keep in mind is that the boot camp story line is set in 1967 and senior marine corps NCOs of Ermey's age group (he was 42 at the time of filming) would all still have been WWII veterans who'd likely experienced, and survived, the extremely brutal no quarters fighting in the pacific theater. Their ideas of how best to prepare young recruits for the realities of wartime service would be _very_ much more shall we say 'hands on' than their successors of the post-Vietnam era from the 1980ies on.

When Joker is doing the interview saying about he "wants to be the first kid on his block to get a kill" he's being sarcastic.

Adding to the list. "Good Morning, Vietnam".

I like how Adam Baldwin chooses to be in a lot of sci-fi and videogames

R Lee Ermey also spoofed his persona in "The Frighteners" as a ghost drill Sgt trying to whip the other ghosts into shape. actually one of my fave underseen/appreciated movies. although you are subjected to a particularly mouthy Jake Busey. (as if there's any other kind of Busey, but still!) IMDb: : The Frighteners https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116365/
