I know I'm late to the party, but the thought George had at the end. "Why did they not include Firefly in the title somewhere, so people could go back and see the serie. And I think it's because att the time most people had nothing but regularly scheduled programing.

I'm a marketing person, and to me the title "Serenity" was really smart. They didn't want to tie it too directly to the show -- after all, the show was already long dead and not making revenue. But if they made the movie too tied to the show, it would scare off anyone else from going to see it in the theatre. The way it was handled, fans went to see it, and the movie was also understandable for general sci-fi fans too. But then again, while I loved "Firefly," I didn't always like it. It definitely included some of Joss's worst instincts -- I got really tired of Mal forever screaming "whore" at Inara, for instance (sometimes literally at the same time he was supposedly "defending her honor"). But for me this was the perfect wrap-up, Summer Glau got to show her incredible range, and I seriously loved everything about it. And it was just breathtakingly shot and produced -- it's a perfect little sci-fi gem and farewell to the show.

I seem to remember watching the edited version of this on YouTube when if was first available, but after joining patreon and going through all of Firefly (about 2 weeks before you did the edits, btw) I decided that I had to send the extra money for a month just to watch the full length version of Serenity here. I'm sure I'll try out a few movies over the next month, but I'm mostly a TV person. Loved watching your reactions to this series and movie!

grischa

i'm eagerly awaiting the uncovered version.

Bobz

For non-firefly viewers I guess.

Maxwell Long

Because 85% of the people seeing the movie had not seen the show..................

8bitAndy

I had a great time rewatching the show and now the movie with you guys. Seeing you both experience the ride that is/was Firefly for the first time brought me back to the days when it was new to me too, and with it, all of the feels. I can't wait to see what's next. <3

I actually saw the film before the series (as the series wasn't on TV in our country, and had to get the dvd after) It lead to some sad emotions for the characters as I already knew where they were headed, especially that loveable leaf on the wind.

You wish to have reavers young man? reavers you shall have and then some

redddfer44

I went through a brief but intense Whedon fanboy phase. Sad to say that this movie ended it. I just knew that I wouldn't ever be able to really root for any cute couples or fun characters because I knew they'd be brutally killed off the minute they achieved a moment of happiness. I hope you guys enjoyed it more than I did. I can't really watch the reaction, the heartbreak is too much.

BHillzebub

Hey How do Reavers clean their ....... Nope can't do it. PS: I'm sorry

Mitchell Bowker

It’s called Serenity for both the name of the ship, and possibly the manner in which the people died on Miranda.

My reading of the movie was that Book was indeed an Operative, but as George said, had a moment of clarity and became a Sheppard. I also figured that Chiwetel Ejiofor's character was on his way to being a spiritual replacement for Book within the universe. However, it is my understanding that the reality is nowhere near my guess.

DanVibes

They didn't call the movie Firefly because Fox still had the rights for the name at the time :)

Alexrandom

Simone I'm very sorry to be the asshole here but his name is not Chitewel Ejiofor but it was close. It's actually Chiwetel :) Love you guys <3

DanVibes

I really love the movie. I just wish instead of Mal saying "A shrapnel tore up that nerve cluster", they could have thrown in a callback like, him saying "I got stabbed during a sword duel with a spoiled dandy called Atherton" - The stab wound was at about the same position... xD Would have been a nice nod for people who watched the show :)

Stephen Zepp

As to why Book and Wash died, at the time the movie was made they DID plan sequels, but neither of those two actors were able to commit to a mulit-movie deal (Tudyk had another movie on tap, and Ron Glass of course was dying of cancer). They didn't want to kill them off specifically as characters, it just "worked out that way".

William

There is talk at the moment about re-launching Firefly

Kerry Rasmussen

For the title, it was a rights issue. Fox still owned the rights to the show "Firefly" and this isn't a Fox movie. Joss had to sue to establish that he while he didn't own the rights to the show, as the writer, he owned the rights to the *characters* (including establishing the ship as a character!) So it had to be named something other than Firefly when Joss went to Universal for the movie. On a different note, with Mal and Inara, as much as we all want them to kiss on screen, it almost would have been too much. They have a lot of baggage to work through. But they have possibilities now. That last scene between them is my favorite. For the first time, we see Inara as just Inara. Before, even when she was in a robe or other casual clothes, she was always perfectly made up and The Companion. Here, she has no make up on, her hair is just loose and natural. And she doesn't know what she will do next, but it open to possibilities. Mal says it's a "good answer" because she's thinking. Maybe she decides to go back to the Guild (NOOOO!!) but she will have made a choice and Mal could live with that, but chances are, her own illusions are shattered and she just wants a life and they can work through that, eventually. And without us prying in. I was crying with you. Nearly 20 years and it gets me every time. Thank you for doing this!

Florian Hoyer

the first shot the "one shot" (which in fact is a two shot witch a hidden amazing cut) is sooo good xD i mean u rly see and understand the ship ;) btw its a cut cause its two sets for two halfs of the ship PS: and thats why we now say a character gets "washed" xD

Kron0n

I always thought killing of Wash was the worst choice ever for this movie. It served no narrative purpose, there was no drama or reason. It was just a shock value move and it drags the movie down. Book was enough.

AC10

Totally off topic. I like Simone's little werewolf claws.

R. Chang

In my opinion, Wash dying raises the stakes dramatically for the final stand. Because if they could kill off Wash, you know that they could kill anybody. I saw this in theaters and I really thought that they all might die at the end. I hate that he died, but I can't deny that it heightens investment and makes the movie better.

Robert Hyler

This is bittersweet. I loved watching this again with you, but now it is over. I so miss this show.

Onno Smits

The first 10 minutes of this movie is a masterclass in writing and getting set-up/exposition out of the way quickly and elegantly. It's literally: A production company card leading into A narrated world-building montage leading into A world-building flashback classroom scene leading into A flashback of Simon rescuing River leading into An introduction to the main antagonist, fade to black into The title card zooming out to A one-shot introducing almost every crew member, their personalities, their interpersonal relationships, and their current situation and motivations. It's absolutely bonkers when you break it down from a screenwriting standpoint.

Torsten Maekler

Simone: I don't want Reivers. Me: Uh-oh... you gonna get some ;-) Yeah, so sad that they lost Wash. But it's Joss Whedon...

MattN

*hugs* I can't tell you how many times I have watched this movie but I still ugly cry every time.

Lou Gallucci

Another fun conspiracy is that Miranda happened right before the independence war. May haps the alliance started it to shift everyone's attention away while they covered it up.

Śéáń

My heart always races on the run up to Wash's scene. I always hope it changes on a rewatch. Such a gut punch. That's not to say I don't like the choice, it's a really good and effective gut punch that martyr's Wash as a character both to the crew and the fans.

Nogusta

Exactly my thought on it. You think everyone is safe because they already had the obligatory death, but after Wash, you don't know what will happen.

Scott McClintock

Note, the long take at the beginning is actually not a single take. There's a clever dissolve at ~00:12:48 (film time) when the camera snaps from the back of Mal back to Simon. The crew confessed to this back in the day.

PickettsChargingPort

"Why did they do that? It was so quick!" Welcome to Joss Whedon territory.

Robert Cooper

How do you solve a problem like Washburn? How do you catch a leaf and pin it down?

Opti_Frog

Disney holds the rights to Firefly now and there is talk of early development for a reboot.

JarHead0351

waited for this movie reaction from you both and it didn't disapoint - What a great movie and great TV show too

Rezblade

You guy would get a kick on YouTube for there on stage questions and answers they had a lot of fun with those as well !!!!!! Good fun

Spooky Dooky

Tears again.... everytime I watch Serenity. But I love feeling like I got to watch it with you guys. Thank you for sharing this with us. I will happily watch a "2nd Time Watching" of Firefly with you. Every time I watch it through I still catch something I missed previously. Subtle gestures or the way a line was delivered...

Spooky Dooky

Firefly was property of Fox, so to make the movie and not infringe on copyright, they used the name Serenity... Something like that...

Spooky Dooky

Please consider watching K-Pax and Enemy of the State =)

EMB

Well, now I'm sad. Serenity always makes me sad. Glad to see it through with you guys, it was truly such a fun show and movie.

Brian Harris

There always is. For 20 years there’s been talk and interviews and hopes and so many false starts. Last I heard they were getting close again … but Joss Whedon won’t be a part of it because he’s persona non grata in Hollywood these days after reports of his abusive behavior with cast and crew of multiple shows were publicized on social media. That’s frankly just as well, Joss is a genius but that does not excuse his abuse of power. However, you can’t tell this particular story without him. What they may do instead is start a new series with new characters that takes place in the Firefly universe instead of a direct sequel series.

Brian Harris

I think it was a wild decision, but I understand the logic. If just Book dies, you can reasonably think, “Ok, that’s their sacrificial lamb (so to speak), so now we know everyone else is safe.” But by killing Wash as well so quickly before the final standoff, it makes it seem like everyone’s life is on the table. That’s why there’s genuine uncertainty when Simon and Kaylee get hurt … if they’ll kill off Wash AND Book, who knows how far they’ll go?

Canadian Cornbread

I literally found out about firefly after watching the movie a year after watching the movie and showing a friend the movie. Had no clue about the show and was ecstatic to find more content with this group of characters

Ron K

I'm sure someone has already commented on this but if you need more Alan Tudyk then you should really watch Resident Alien. He's the lead and he's awesome in it.

Richard Hodgetts

One nice little bit of attention to detail, that I'd never noticed before, in all the times I've watched this: When Mal has his shirt off, talking to Inara, he has a large scar on his right shoulder, where Niska's tattoo-faced brute threw his knife at him, during Train Job.
