This was an overrated movie to me…6/10 overall rating from me…1st part of the movie was an 8/10, but 2nd part was just a 4/10

redddfer44

What, a 1987 movie where Simone doesn't go "good year?!" Extremely sus.

Alec S

Adam Baldwin is not related to the other Baldwin family/3 brothers, Alec, William and I forgot the 3rd one. Shaved heads are to prevent spread of lice and disease.

As per Matthew Modine recommendations: Short Cuts is *amazing*. I'm sure it won't ever, ever, never ever win any poll, but it's a three-hour movie based on several Raymond Carver short stories and it *works*. It's got both tears and really dark humor and everything in between. Amazing ensemble cast, amazing everything, a brilliant movie, but no one's reacted to it -- I'm not sure how well it would work, honestly. It's also arguably the easiest starting-off point to the director Robert Altman's filmography. And of course, this is the right time to bring up Apocalypse Now again. It's also an artsy and intense Vietnam movie, but it has a more traditional structure. Pretty please? Sugar on top?

Jim Johnson

Please do more Kubrick! Dr Strangelove is my number 1 recommendation but A Clockwork Orange, 2001, and The Shining are all incredible too.

this is the first time i watched the whole movie all the way through. the first (and only) time i tried to watch it was my freshman year of college (which started in August 2001) and i had several relatives going off to war right out of high school... and honestly i was fucking terrified of a bleak future for them... 20 years later watching it at home, high as fuck with headphones, i fucking loved it. it was beautiful, tragic, poignant, meaningful, true fucking art. i'm glad you guys got to watch it, and i'm glad i finally did too. *edit to add- first watch -attempt ended 45 mins in, right after boot camp-

Torsten Maekler

I can't wait to hear an intro in the rythm of the training song: "We-hel-come to Ci-ne-binge" and George repeats: "We-hel-come to Ci-ne-binge" "Thi-his i-his Geo-oh-orge" - "Thi-his i-his Geo-oh-orge" "And my na-hame is Simone" - "And my na-hame is Simone"

Torsten Maekler

I think this would be good choices for follow up movies: "A few good men!" - Tom Cruise And on the lighter side: "Good Morning Vietnam" - Robin Williams TV_series, 3 Seasons: "Tour of Duty" (for more Vietnam) You really should put "Good Morning Vietnam" on your ToDo-List. One of the Best of Robin Williams. Fun and Serious - you get it both.

Full metal jacket refers to the ammunition. Soft lead bullet encased in a jacket of harder steel.

Torsten Maekler

A Full Metal Jacket is basically a bullet that is pure metal. Usually a softer metal core surrounded by a harder metal outside. They tend to go through the target you hit and keep enough momentum to hit something behind the target, whilst ammunition that has a hollow core tends to get stuck in the target and cause more damage. That is why often people check weapon wounds for an exit hole. If there is one the chanced of internal damage is smaller and you have a higher chance of surviving this.

Kron0n

I was laughing as you guys were going "He's adorable". Just think he's not going to be shortly lol.

Einherj

Joker understands how ridiculous the whole war is and he's basically trolling everyone with his macho comments. And like any good troll he gets serious responses which reveal the state of mind of the other person.

Funny That

The drill sergeant stuff is about as real as it gets. The actor playing the drill sergeant was a marine drill sergeant that came on as a consultant and ended up with the role and a long and successful career in the movies.

Charlie Keeler

George was correct, the small bottles on the helmets is a weapon oil

REDR58

You two should also watch Platoon and Apocalypse Now as well. None of these movies are pleasant but are worth a watch.

Michael_AP

It's already been mentioned, but "Full metal jacket" is a outer shell around the actual projectile that is being fired. It gives the projectile more strength from being deformed when it's being fired - so it can be fired at greater force/speed. It also gives it more penetrating power and stability from deforming when hitting a body. When hitting a body, a projectile with a full metal body will mostly stay intact and cause less damage compared to a softer projectile which will "splatter out" and cause horrendous damage to the body. The "rules of war" forbids the use of projectiles that is meant to "splatter out". Don't remember if it's in the Geneva Convention or it it was an earlier agreement. When George mentions movies with Modine, Simone looks like she doesn't know Notting Hill.... or did she think: is Modine in that movie! Simone would LOOOOVE Notting Hill ;) and it's a genre you two still hasn't reacted to so give her a treat and pick it ;) ha ha (not that Modine has much of a role though) Otherwise for Modine there is: Pacific Heights (1990)

REDR58

Ann-Margaret is a singer, actor and entertainer who participated in USO tours for the benefit of military personnel during Vietnam.

Raymond DeGraw

Great reaction...the first 45 minutes of Full Metal Jacket of great then falls off. I'm a little bit confused with Simone saying she has not seen Adam Baldwin in any other roles... You have watched Independence Day and talk about having watch Buffy/Angel. He was in the final season of Angel (5 episodes).

P S

The music was basically sarcasm showing the madness of it all, it was from the proper time period as well

Dee Aitch

Alec (everything), Daniel (John Carpenter's Vampires, Bound), William (Backdraft, Flatliners) and Stephen (The Usual Suspects, Bio-Dome). I would have sworn that Stephen was in Young Guns but I just Mandela'd myself.

Jack Burton

if you guys want more D'Onofrio then there is a decent movie called 'The Cell' where he plays a Schizophrenic. Scary, yes. I'd also recommend The Salton Sea starring Val Kilmer, with Vincent playing a good part. Underrated, good, and some wonderful film making.

The Maestro

Oh shit, I didn't realize that was him. I guess he's just one of those actors I forget about and then he shows up playing some terrifying guy and I'm always impressed with how scary he can be but never realize who he is

Mike Henderson

When you guys asked if drill sargent are the same at home, my grandfather was a drill Sargent in the late 50s, 60s, and early 70s. They made a movie based on him, Clint Eastwood played him. The movie was Heartbreak Ridge. From the stories my mom told me, he never turned it off. He was a mean and violent guy at home. I never met him he died 3 months before I was born.

E.P.B.F.

He also delivered an excellent performance as Wilson Fisk (aka Kingpin) in the Daredevil and Punisher Marvel TV shows.

Sean

I'll never forget my English teacher in high school was a drill sergeant during Vietnam and he was the nicest man I ever meet. It was the one thing he would never talk about in class so they go pretty hard.

Haye Zeus

I know people say that the second half of this movie falls, but I really enjoy it. The shots and the nihilistic attitude towards their situation is right up my alley. I guess it’s just not as entertaining or engaging as the first half, but it’s still a Kubrick movie and even his mid tier movies are some of the best.

JarHead0351

Full Metal Jacket is the round/bullet is called/type Flashbacks of Marine Corp Bootcamp - what you see is how Bootcamp was during my time. We had a guy who took his life in the head at night too. They only show 1 D.I. while there is 3 of them, one senoir and two jr.s . FYI I went in at 17rs & 20days old, while friends were still in high school, Semper FI

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Well not film but Matthew Modine is "Papa", Dr. Brenner, in Stranger Things. Some have mentioned that R Lee Ermey, the Drill Instructor, was an actual Marine Corps DI during the Vietnam War, not sure though if anyone has mentioned that he was not originally cast as the DI, the actor playing the helicopter gunner (who was also a former Marine) was originally cast in that role but R Lee Ermey convinced Kubrick to give him the part and the rest is history. Yeah two scenes still get me, no matter how many times I watch this movie, Leonard's crying after the blanket party, and the damn sniper girl looking at me/us and pleading for me/us to shoot her. One thing you have to respect about this movie even if you can't love it, it doesn't sugar coat anything about modern war or the military. I can't help it, so compelled to recommend other Vietnam movies I just gotta: Platoon (Oliver Stone drew from his own experiences to make this movie), Good Morning Vietnam (Robin Williams, and it's not SO dark), obviously Apocalypse Now (but I don't know which version is best, I've only seen the "redux"). There are a lot more but I don't want to beat you over the head with them.

Ron Moses

IT'S NOT THE ARMY. It's the Marine Corps. Big difference. Don't make that mistake around a Marine. (I'm not one.)

The blind patriots get awful quiet when there's music to face, and hopefully some lessons are learned in silence.

redddfer44

I used to watch this a lot in my teens, but I always dug the first half a lot more. I recently rewatched it for the first time in 20 years or so and liked it a lot more as a whole. I agree that it's not as straightforwardly entertaining, but the thematic explorations made up for it. Or maybe I just enjoyed the "oh, THAT'S what this movie is about?!" feel that I got :D

Jim Frykman

What crosses your mind when you think about that pour soul? Was any lesson learned?

Chase Lonnergan

To answer your questions on the origin of the terms Charlie and Gook. Charlie is derived from the military phonetic alphabet. The North Vietnamese Army, NVA, is Nathaniel Victor Alpha, and the Viet Cong, VC, is Victor Charlie. Nathaniel and Charlie became nicknames for the NVA and VC respectively. As for Gook, it comes from "Hello" in Vietnamese. Which sounds like "Me Gook" when spoken. Which, to the early American Soldiers and Marines sounded like an introduction. So they started using it as a slang term.

Andrew Roach

Ann Margaret may be best known for starring in Viva Las Vegas with Elvis back in the day.

Joseph Tamburo

I swear Simone said "Welcome to Cinebitch" in the opening. Which seems like the dark alternate universe version of this channel where George and her would just destroy films instead of trying to enjoy them.

Gunnar Rea

Do we honestly expect or require two civilians from a different damn country to know and remember the difference?.. sincerely a Danish civilian that wishes people would just cool of a tiny bit when it comes to this stuff..

Ron Moses

I had no idea you were so opposed to sharing information, my mistake.

Ron Moses

And not to be pedantic, but it's Ann-Margret. Which, okay, is pretty pedantic. :)

Gunnar Rea

Sharing information is entirely reasonable and welcome.. Warning a foreigner to not mess up the branch of another country’s military force seems kinda out there in comparison.. I’m not sure i could differentiate between any branch of a foreign nations military with any kind of reliability, and expecting me to get it right is insane..

Tim Boxall

I was a nipper living down the road when the Hue battle scenes were shot at the old Beckton Gasworks in London . Kubrick had to pump a load of smoke out to obscure the London skyline behind it, it bloody stank! I remember loving hearing all the booms and bangs of the pyrotechnics, lol.

Harry Martin

for what it's worth, marine drill instructors SOMETIMES are like Gunnery Seargent but not always.

Harry Martin

and yes the idea is to break a person so you can build them back up
