Late to the party but the show clicked for me, at about this point, when I realized that I was *supposed* to dislike almost everyone. Maybe not supposed to, but I did. Except Miller and Amos, and Chrisjen. Miller was just a cop binding himself to something in a world he didn't belong to, and Amos is honest and there's not drama to him. Chrisjen is just excellent, but that might be because I really like the actor.

Rav Low

I dunno if you guys' will go back and read these but a few things: Simone caught it: Mormons are in space. Why mormons? We'll find out! What does Star Helix supposed to do? They're corporate security, private cops. So they're supposed to protect property. Remember "There's no laws on ceres, just cops." Etc.

Rav Low

The capsule the guy took, if you noticed he was watching Holden's expressions. So it's like a performance enhancer that makes it easier to notice tells that someone is lying. So he says stuff that gets under folks skin to see how they react, etc.

sam riedel

I've never seen anyone more lost than George. It's strange that he can't follow faces that are very different from each other. Then there are some weird wrong leaps he takes, that simone was able decipher right away. Like when he couldn't figure out why the out for blood belters weren't pacified by a simple cultural greeting and still attacked the cop... Then with Simone putting together the Mormon clues and he said I don't think it matters. It's just odd.

Amelie W

Yeah it's funny, there's no reason to "dislike" the guy who doesn't understand why killing people is bad and doesn't care about why he does anything. You just never want him to have a clear line of sight to you or anyone you love. "Other" than Amos, I think the show does a fine job with presenting layered human characters who're neither inherently good or bad, though we tend to see them on their bad days. Big "Almost everyone you meet is in the middle of a decades long argument with someone who's not there" mood.

Ron Moses

Okay, I'm clear to watch 1&2 now. I've started this series four times and never got past ep3. I figure I'll make sure they commit to it before I commit to it. I know, I know, it's the most amazing show ever and you're probably right. But those first three episodes... yeesh. Not exactly the most engaging television I've ever seen.

michael mccafferty

Like you, I tried and failed a couple of times. A friend whose opinion I admired told me to watch the show, I explained the initial inertia, and he basically said, "Shut up, watch the show." I came late to the show, it was already on Amazon. After I finished the first season I gifted a copy to all my siblings. "I want to talk about this show," I wrote, "and no one else I know is watching it." My brother immediately connected because of (reasons) and his enthusiasm carried our sisters over that critical threshold of episodes. Now the all love the show, too.

redddfer44

Interesting thoughts about confusion, George! I often feel the opposite, at least when I'm reading a book. If a character knows what's going on but I don't, I easily feel either dumb or that the author doesn't know how to keep a story together. The sorts of stories that seem incoherent and full of holes but then are revealed to make sense through a twist at the end irritate me no end. Then again, maybe it's different with tv and movies. I haven't read the books, but a friend of mine (without watching the show) complained about paper-thin characters in the book as well. Apparently at least the beginning of the books (and the show) are based on the RPG campaign of the authors which explains some of the characters' decisions.

Torsten Maekler

You have reached the worst point of the confusion, George and Simone. Things will clear up from this point onwards. You are very right: this show basically throws you into the thick of it and you don't know on what to focus, what is secondary information, what is primary. It is a bit because they mixed up (had to) story lines from the first two books into this first season to get prime actors for the (planned) lead roles. I.e. Avasarala (the political woman from earth) does first appear only in the second book. Now imagine you don't have to cope with any of the political stuff but rather can gently learn about the Canterbury and events regarding their story part. Way easier to get into all of this. And don't worry: all your questions will be answered. It just takes time - for some of them until late into the latter seasons ;-).

Torsten Maekler

George, Simone: If you need a bit of a panel to get some basics for this series clear, there sure are some here who could help you with that. Of course it should not lead to spoilers and stuff - because part of the fun is figuring out what is going on. But if you need stuff, ask :-)

overdev

tht title of this post is a bit confusing^^ 'The Expanse: Season 1 - 3 & 4 - Patreon Exclusive' i read that like you are viewing season 1-3 and 4 in one sitting. maybe name it like this 'The Expanse: Season 1 - EP 3 & 4'

Tim Arnold

These books were challenging to adapt but I think this show is one of the best examples of how to do it right. We are supposed to be confused at this point, but they did their job if you still want to understand what's happening. And these characters are not supposed to be very likable at this point - that's a large part of why they don't like each other in the show... they have been in survival mode, confused after the Canterbury was killed, and then the Martians sowed distrust within them because they had their own agenda (what happened to Phoebe station), so they've mostly been acting in their own interests with one notable exception - Holden refusing to leave the Donager without the rest of "his" crew. He was the second in commend on the Canterbury (whether he wanted to admit that or not) so now he feels responsibility for the others, and that tells you something about Holden's character.

Śéáń

In the TTRPG that the Expanse books were based on, the player playing the character that was the basis for Shed left the game at this point in the story, hence the suddenness of the railgun shot through the ship killing him while they were strapped in. As others have said, the conflict between the guys captured by Mars was added for the show, so it creates a bit of cognative dissonance with Holden's loyalty to them. I know that others have also said this a lot, but characterisation improves from this point on as they have time to breath a little better. You'll come to really like some characters you're not currently keen on.

Pajander

I really wish the show would use the whole intro for all episodes, the music is so great. Broadcast TV problems, I guess.

Gaius Frakking Baltar

The first several episodes were mainly about world-building, but the characters come fully into their own during the latter half of season 1. There are indeed many questions and it can take two or three episodes - or even two or three seasons - for the characters (and the audience) to get their questions answered. But rest assured, all will be answered.

Patrick Evans

I know this doesn't necessarily make for a good show, but I think it takes the first season to get a handle on things and not feel as lost. That may be because of the translation from page to screen.

Abush

Little details to relieve your confusion. The little pills the Martian officer took during the interrogations were Focus Drugs, basically Adderall on steroids. As far what Miller and the cops do, it's actually simple. There are no official police. Earth contracts out the security and peace keeping out to corporations. who in turn hire people to maintain the peace in the station. Which is why they are very susceptible to bribes. Also, yes, the Mormons are actual Mormons. Mormons were one of the religions to have survived this long. To answer Simone's question about the battle, Holden didn't say anything at first because they couldn't identify the stealth ships until they were close enough. But by that point it was too late and they were being boarded. The juice is a cocktail of drugs that are injected through your crash couch to help you survive high g forces.

Steaphan Greene

I suggest you rewatch the first four episodes on your own before continuing. You may want to continue doing this as you go. You are supposed to be confused about most of what you're confused about at this point, but some of what you are still confused about is actually explained by dialog that you've talked over. :) Also, now that you know who the main characters are (for now), the first 4 episodes will make more sense.

Nemo Quixote

In my opinion, this is one of the best adaptation of books to show I've ever seen. Like many, I failed to get into this show the first time I watched. Now, it is my favorite show of all time. Watching it again with you guys, I am amazed at how much this show is giving the audience about character's motivation and future plot points. For example, Lopez's speech to Holden about Earth and Mars. George's joking reaction that Lopez had been practicing that speech until he found a situation to use it isn't far off. But he wasn't practicing it. Instead, we are seeing the result of indoctrination. A prejudice that has been culturally ingrained in the minds of the Martians. We learn so much about Mars and its relationship to Earth. And we learn so much about Holden (and Earthers) by his reaction.

Kron0n

It will make sense by the end of the season but things start to make sense before that. The show is basically starting in media res, it just doesn't seem that way. It's a mystery sci fi. Also they're more work colleagues in a high stress situation, not so much friends at the start. The friendship is made over time. I was surprised this was voted tbh, it's a really slow burn mystery.

Sam Ferguson

Just to echo what others have said: The first half of the first season or so is kind of rough. They do a lot of world-building that's very interesting, but you've got a hodge-podge of characters and motivations that are messy and confusing and not very clearly communicated. When I first tried to watch the show, I actually gave up after 2-3 episodes. It wasn't until my friends kept raving about it that I went back to it, and it ended up being one of my favorite series of all time. But I didn't feel really locked in with any of the characters until halfway through, or maybe even the end of, the first season. I'm glad y'all are watching the show. Obviously there are no guarantees, but I think you'll end up liking it (and really getting attached to some of the characters) before too long.

Torsten Maekler

Remember, that ships in the Expanse Universe when they want to slow down have to turn around and fire their main engine. Thus the Martians were only able to see the drive plumes of the incoming ships. Only after they turned and went into attack mode Holden was able to see the ships and identify them.

Todd Bell

I always thought the first few episodes were needlessly confusing, too. This episode was a turning point for me personally. I think it reached the point of establishing pretty much all of the things. I haven't read the other comments, but I'm sure people will gladly answer any questions or clarify anything without using spoilers.

AC10

Simone George...... Trust your patreon supporters. Yes these first several episodes are all about world building. (It is a very big world to be built). There is a very good reason this series was so very strongly suggested. It gets so much better. Continuously better every episode and every season. Once you get hooked you will be more and more hooked every episode until the end. We got you.

Florian Hoyer

the pill showed how he saw every little change in face movement, its basicly something to be a super reader. to be rly good in reading micro expressions in ur face to see if ur surprised or lying or stuff

Einherj

I kinda knew they would not be into this series from the start. Or maybe they will be after it picks up a bit, dunno. It seems like they are not into that slow build up style of storytelling. I've noticed this from their other reactions too. Seems like they want to know everything about everything instantly. I'm not saying it's a bad thing. People like different things and look at things differently. It's ok you two, you don't have to like it. I'm a big fan of the first season. I liked the noir style investigation and the introduction to all these factions and cultures. I remember it being quite clear. They were clearly slowly building towards something. You just need to take it all in and let it run its course. Maybe I'm just old. Of course, it might be different for them because they have a camera in their face and have to comment on things. Might be hard to concentrate on all the small nuances. I myself stopped watching the show somewhere during the fifth season. It started to feel tedious and too melodramatic for me.

Ryan Hoffman

Have either of you seen the 2000s era Battlestar Galactica? They started off with a 3hr mini-series before the show started - this let them get loads of world-building and the "inciting incident" story out of the way, so that the show could start and be what they wanted it to be from ep1. This let BSG 1x1 "33" be (IMO) one of the best episodes of the show, which a traditional pilot can almost never do. I think The Expanse could have benefitted from the same thing, a TV movie or mini-series that took care of a lot of world-building. Instead, they did all of that in these first four episodes, which made them feel a bit different from the rest of the show, and a little bit disconnected. I always tell friends that I recommend this show to to reserve judgment until around mid-season 1 until they consider bailing. Hopefully they'll turn you around in the next couple of weeks!

Emptysea93

I am frustrated with all the people trying to force George and Simone to like this show. Not everyone does, and continually pressuring them into watching more and liking it is just going to eliminate what enjoyment they do get from the show. If they do not like it by the time the season ends, then they don't like it, and leave it be so they can choose a show they actually enjoy. I feel like too many people are trying to force their likes and opinions onto Simone and George, but we are here to watch them react not you, so let them enjoy what they enjoy and dislike what they dislike.

James Lawson

Random one but your copies have a "previously on" vs the ones on Amazon Prime that seem to be lacking that, so it's harder to figure out when to start the time, or to return to it. (you're 1 min 30 or so ahead depending on the recap)

Jack Burton

They aren't against each other. They don't really know each other and Mars gave them reasons during interrogation to not trust each other even more. Naomi and Amos are the closest and he protects her. The tools they used are in each area for emergency reasons... because they are in space. Tools to seal breaches would be in every room. Holden thought it was Mars because the tech found on the Scapuli was Mars tech. No reason to believe otherwise and he sent the msg as insurance so they wouldn't get executed, thinking Mars was trying to cover their tracks. Makes sense. You saw 'The Juice' in the first episode when they flipped and burned on the Canterbury. They have injection ports in the chairs, needles, that inject something that helps them in high-G burns to keep them awake. A personal observation is that without reading the books I can see why this is a lot to take in. My friendly suggestion is to sit back and let it all soak in. Stop looking for deeper meanings in things. All answers will reveal themselves in time. All characters will arc. You will come to understand why this is such a beloved show. This is a 'Space Opera'. Politics, war, unknown factions, & complicated characters. There is a reason why Firefly fans love this show. You will love it too.

Johann Du Toit

I remember watching the first half of Season 1 and thinking "Thank God I read the books because I would be so confused otherwise". And it sounds like a broken record at this point, but it does get better. It's a bit like The Wire.

Tim Arnold

The length of the intro was typically determined by the actual length of the show, because most networks set a minimum number of minutes that must be dedicated to commercials, so if the show runs long in a week, they shorten the intro rather than cut into that contractually obligated commercial time.

Alexrandom

I personally haven't read the books and had the same experience as you guys watching season 1. Basically confused and not into the characters that much. But it really gets better. I personaly have problems with the editing style but it's due to the way it was broadcast and there's nothing you can do about it. Hope you guys keep going with this one because next seasons are really great tv. The onlysci fi show I enjoyed as much was battlestar galactica. I love firefly and believe the characters to be extremely well presented but this show says so much more about everything... It's really something else :)

Sean Murphy

Yeah they seem to go into it every time as if it's a new world. I think it's because they watched FireFly too close to this one. Very different worlds and character development styles. They're jumping from a Sci-Fi adventure show to a Sci-Fi "Noir" Mystery. At least the first season is. So I see why it's throwing them off.

Sean Murphy

We are not meant to know what is going on because the characters don't know what is going on. There are clues everywhere however. I think the disconnect is coming straight out of FireFly and the unmatched character development that has. This is not that show and is more like a mystery series. There seem to be a few world development things that are missed though. They have shown the juice in chairs before and highlight it with high G maneuvers which seems to have been forgotten completely in this one. I'm assuming it's hard to remember those things that add up about the world because of the difference in character development from other shows. Along with not being able to remember faces. It probably should have been watched with a "palette cleanser" show between this and Firefly.

GBmain

As someone who read and loved the books, I was a little disappointed in the show at first, the lore and belters etc, it was clear they didn't have the budget to portray it the way I imagined, but they find their feet and it does become an enjoyable watch, definitely read (or listen to on audiobook) Leviathan Wakes and I think it'll hook you straight away...

Thomas Yanez

Yeah, you're old. I am, too. Gone are the days when it was OK for you not to know what was going on until the writers/director wanted you to know. I see so many reactors having this same kind of ... well, reaction. We've been reinforcing short attention spans for a couple of generations now and this is the result. Fortunately, we still have masterpieces like "The Expanse" that will reward most that watch it, even those that balk at the beginning (if they hold on long enough).

Thomas Yanez

Sometimes I think reactors should just watch the first season on their own when they can pay attention and not be distracted by the need to react or create "filler" or miss stuff because they are talking about other things and inside jokes. Then, with that under their belt, post a video giving their overall reaction to the first season, followed by proper reactions for the rest of the show.

Thomas Yanez

That's a foreign concept to me - I like it when the story knows things that I don't. It challenges me to use my imagination. The reward I get from figuring something out before the book gets there is immense. I certainly never feel "dumb" because of it. Now, that's not to say that there aren't badly written books (and shows) that end up with magic/lazy solutions... there definitely are, and it sucks when you get invested in one and realize it was wasted time and effort. But, you'd think that with a book/show like "The Expanse" and the acclaim it has received in BOTH forms of media, more reactors would give it the benefit of the doubt instead of just complaining from the get go.

Ron Moses

Yeah, I think I'm out. I gave it four episodes, I'm tired of constantly asking, "What is happening? What is that thing? What are they talking about? Why are they doing that? Who are these people?", and then realizing I don't actually care. I understand, the fish course is to die for. But the appetizer is an unidentifiable bowl of something greenish-brown and I'm just not hungry anymore.

Grand Moff Slackin'

Book reader and show watcher here. After finishing both the book series and tv series I adore the characters of The Expanse as much as I do the Firefly crew. Not sure what particularly is confusing you. Maybe post some questions and we all can answer?

Thomas Yanez

Simone : "*asking about the Mormon posters in earlier episodes* George : "I don't think it matters, it's just set dec." Everything matters. There is very little information provided in this show that isn't there for a reason, even if it seems trivial or unrelated right now. Not only is it a great show, but it pays off HUGE in a rewatch.

Thomas Yanez

"The characters feel as lost as I am." I always saw that as a cool thing - they know as much as we do, which isn't a lot, so of course they are lost, and scared and confused and tensions are high.

Skinny_Obelix

I read and loved the books, and I have a hard time getting into the show with you guys. Thank God I read the books or I would be lost. In the books it was a lot easier to understand the the state of the universe from the start. In the show the world in itself is overwhelming to the senses while in the books that's something your imagination fills in without taking your focus away from the story. I do think they did a bad job at casting the first episode, with so many dark haired men with scruffy beards, making it even more confusing... But for me the show is starting to find its ground with episode 4. They do have a weird take on certain characters, that I had imagined completely different, but that is what happens with adaptations I guess.

Thomas Yanez

I read the books after finishing the TV series and was surprised to find that despite what people say about it being a good adaptation that there was a lot changed. Characters come and go in the book, but the TV show had to make persistent roles so they moved a lot of things around to give everybody something to do. Without that, there are characters AND storylines that you wouldn't see until later seasons. And, I was a little disappointed to see how much drama they added to the crew's interactions. I guess they did that to spice it up for the TV audience. It is that added drama, I think, that ends up making characters feel unlikable at the beginning.

Andrew Smith

The hardcore fans are going to have a fit if we just watch the first season lol.

Shibby

Thank you for giving The Expanse a shot. It is a lot more complex than Firefly so it takes longer to find it's feet which can be pretty frustrating at times. Whether you end up watching it all or not, I have enjoyed watching with you so far, thank you.

Torsten Maekler

The characters should not know what they are about to embark into. They are not the crew of the Enterprise, out there to save humanity. They are everyday dudes, trying to make a living and are thrown into something way above their pay grade. So they are not prepared and have no idea, what is going on.

Pajander

I don't really understand what's so confusing about the world. It's literally just our solar system and the only sci-fi magic tech that really matters is the Epstein drive, everything else is built up pretty organically on that premise. I guess the show assumes some knowledge of the solar system but that can be fixed with 15 minutes on Wikipedia. The weirdest thing to me is that Mars is supposed to become a rival of Earth in just a few hundred years and that they would have billions of people living in pressurized habitats. That's gonna be absolutely impossible.

Florian Hoyer

but it also make them much better in the end. you always have to change stuff when u change the medium. a 1-1 translation from book to series is normaly rly bad

Chris Lüders

It's just like in reality, when you have three different factions that distrust each other, so it's difficult to get an overall picture of the situation. Each side has their assumptions, but they don't talk to each other. Each side needs proof, for example Avasarala ('the woman with the dark voice') has used her connection to the Terran ambassador on Mars and accepted to discredit him. As for the whole story, it's a bit like Pulp Fiction, only with a linear timeline. After the first parts, you have no idea what is going on, except that there is a story, but you don't know where it is going. Here it's the same, you know something is going on, you know exactly the same as the three different factions, so you actually know three times as much as each party and in the end you will see the whole picture, but for now it's just a puzzle with many pieces. 😉 By the way, make sure you get They little pieces of the series because everything in this series/story can (and often will) be important later. 🧐 At least for a better understanding. 😊

Lewis Hobbs

Having read the entire book series and watched the first 3 seasons of the show, I think that both Naomi and Holden were poorly cast. The James Holden from the books was a very charismatic and natural leader. I never felt that about him from the show. The Naomi from the books was a super genius who very early on had a strong chemistry with Holden. Again, I don't get that feeling in the show. The actors for Amos and Chrisjen are however pressy spot on to the book's characters. Also that whole drama that happened with them on the shuttle never happened in the book. In the book they were in trouble and due to Holden's charisma and leadership, immediately began working together to survive except the doctor who was panicking, whining and complaining all the way up until his death. You eventually get to like all the crew in the show but both Naomi and Holden never rise to the level of their book characters IMO. All that being said, the show is worth watching. Again IMO.

Jack

Strongly recommend watching this spoiler-free introduction to the world of The Expanse. It's only 10 minutes, and doesn't need a reaction or anything, but it will do a really good job of helping you to understand all the moving parts and be less confused about what's going on. Again it's spoiler-free, just a primer on the basic characters and factions in their starting positions at the beginning of the series. https://youtu.be/VNjrI0YvZYA

Jack

I must have missed something - what are you referring to? Can you give me an oblique reference, or maybe a timestamp in the video I posted?

Persnickity

The show starts to really pick up speed moving forward. It drags pretty hard to start but things get real good real fast

Jack

The footage is taken from the first few minutes of the first episode... I suppose the voiceover does indicate a small element about one plotline, although not in a big way: we already know from the footage that the blue stuff is strange and from her reaction we know it is terrifying, so I don't think their use of the A word spoils a big reveal. But I take the point that it is a minor spoiler of sorts. Glad you liked the video though: I do think it's really good for people who have no prior knowledge of the books or series: the first few episodes are really confusing otherwise.

Torsten Maekler

Yeah, except the A thing there aren't a lot of spoilers in this - so might be a good idea to get some background info from the video :-) Though if I remember correct the thing will be revealed mid season one...

Ty Johnson

I don't know about it getting better real fast, but It does get way better. season one kinda sets everything up, and season two is pretty out there, but omg its kicks ass season 3. I think

POSTALMNDCLARITY

PLEASE just hang in there. From this point forward the show just gets better and better and better! This is seriously the BEST SHOW I've ever seen! The rest of this season picks up and starts to gain momentum but season 2-6 are absolutely INCREDBILE! You will really start to understand the world and the characters. The show started out on Sci-fi with very little budget. It eventually got picked up by Amazon because the fans fought for this show! I PROMISE YOU that you will end up so hooked on this show and the cast that you will not believe how you could possibly second guess it. This is such a vast world that they had to build and PLEASE trust us, we wouldnt steer you wrong. Just look at the rotten tomatoes scores for the future seasons, if you have any doubts how good this show actually is. It will all just click at some point and you will never look back!

POSTALMNDCLARITY

I hope they give this show the chance it deserves. Firefly is good, I wont deny that, but the Expanse is on another level entirely. It takes time to build such a deep and complex world. Ill admit that the first 4 episodes throw a lot at you and it can be confusing but thats kind of the point. You're meant to be a bit confused, but ALL questions are eventually answered and I feel like at some point, in the next couple episodes, it just "clicks" and you find yourself getting incredibly invested in the story and the characters.

ClassicGOD

I agree. I had a really rough time with S1 to the point that after finishing it I was not going to watch further. But I did after a pause and now It is one of my favorite if not the most favorite show I've ever seen.

8bitAndy

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to make a suggestion for the next tv poll (forgive me if it's not) but I'd love to see Simone and George react to the BBC series Sherlock. The episode length and season length would fit this format nicely, plus I think they both would really enjoy the show. :)

Ryan Butler

If you guys have questions (non spoiler) feel free to ask.

Spooky Dooky

I agree, Sherlock is a great series. I loved it. But also please consider the movie K-Pax, it's a hidden gem.

Atnor Morda

Ok..."Well, thats what happens when you run in slow motion" caught me by surprise and made me laugh :)

Hapsard

This is kinda bumming me out 😞 I was really looking forward to your reaction to the Expanse when I signed up for the Patreon and that you are having trouble with it makes me sad. *heavy sigh* ... Oh well. Kind of curious what you wanted Holden to do instead of transmit what he did. The Canterbury was blown up by stealth ships. Only Mars has stealth tech as far as anyone knows ... even Alex said that. They found a Martian transponder sending out the distress signal, and the first ship that comes for them is the Martian flagship. Before they took them and were able to do whatever they were going to do (which could have been anything) he broadcast everything he knew about what happened. Sure that played into the hands of the unknown antagonist, but it was kind of a no brainer in my opinion.

Nikodevious

"Why did they stop to have that conversation?" They didn't stop for a chat. Seconds before George asked, the MCRN squad leader signaled a stop and began checking his wrist-com. My guess would be that he was receiving updates on enemy movements, and path availability.
