I have to admit, it feels strange watching someone who doesn't know this story. I read this book when I was 12, and it just seems like something that has always been there. Like Jack and the Beanstalk or Hansel and Gretel.

The boys all run a "consensual" train on Bev, yeah. Somehow, this binds them together as a group, bridges them from childhood to adulthood and gives them the strength to escape the tunnels. Or something. King has tried to explain it, but I'm always left feeling kind of dubious.
