The Expanse: Season 1 - Episode 5 & 6 - Patreon Version

Charlie Calver

Speculating (late) on George's secret past... as a Software Engineer I always wonder what it'd be like to work for a website everyone uses, but no-one admits. People gotta build those funtime websites.

Trepanation21

Ahh! Making food and jumping in *immediately!* It's fun seeing how you guys react to things this early in the series LOL Edit: The mispronunciations of "Anubis" are intentional aspects of the writing, because it's not a common word, especially away from Earth (culture) and the less-educated. Remember, The Expanse is a world in which generations of humans of Mars and the Belt have never known Earth and Earth culture apart from what they're aware of politically. There's a lot of world-building to lay out this early in the series, and perhaps your expectations may have been influenced by the fact that you came right off the tail of Firefly. I understand that George finds some of the character behaviors frustrating or annoying in how unclear or unexplained they are, but rest assured, once they've had some time to get their bearings in the wild events they're going through, they'll share their reasons with you, as they will with each other <3 Regardless, happy to follow along on your journey. Hope you end up enjoying it as much as so many of us have too!

Jack

Strongly recommend watching this spoiler-free introduction to the world of The Expanse. It's only 10 minutes, and doesn't need a reaction or anything, but it will do a really good job of helping you to understand all the moving parts and be less confused about what's going on. Again it's spoiler-free, just a primer on the basic characters and factions in their starting positions at the beginning of the series. https://youtu.be/VNjrI0YvZYA I posted this on your last video, but posting it one last time here much more quickly so that hopefully you'll see it!

redddfer44

7 years ago George was a CIA analyst confirmed. I like the detective's hair because it has a feel of future fashion. It's cool when scifi takes chances with its designs and doesn't just transport our sense of fashion into the future. (The latter, of course, being a commercially sensible choice even if you have a world famous fashion designer in charge.)

POSTALMNDCLARITY

Please be open minded! We all wouldn't have begged for this and swear it gets better to the point of being amazing, if it wasn't! Trust us!

Elvenwitch

George "That guy loves coffee." Everyone in the know "It is one of his defining features."

Torsten Maekler

George, now you want to know, why Naomi is so angry - later when you know, you wish you wouldn't...

JayF

I still haven't managed to watch 3 and 4 even with you two watching along. I'm not sure if I can continue it. I understand the fans that want us to watch until the show gets good but I ran into the same thing with a book series by Brandon Sanderson (whose work I normally love). I tell them the first book is really bad and they assure me that it gets better in the second book. To which I reply that that may be true but the first book is like 1100 pages long. Why am I going to subject myself to hours of not being entertained in the hopes that it gets better?

Andrew Smith

Honestly if your not hooked by the first four episodes the shows not for you. This goes for George and Simone as well if you don't like the show don't watch it

Gaius Frakking Baltar

The memory chip that Fred Johnson recovered from Lopez's body is the chip that the captain of the Donnager handed to Lopez before ordering him to evacuate Holden and the others from the ship. The chip contains all the data about the unidentified stealth ships which attacked the Donnager (the captain wanted Lopez to get the data to MCRN command). Btw, the reason that Uncle Mateo didn't die when he lifted his face plate to clear a faulty sensor wire is based on solid science; the link below explains everything. You'll also notice that he exhaled before lifting his visor - this method of protecting your lungs from the vacuum of space becomes very relevant in a key episode three or four seasons from now. https://www.syfy.com/the-expanse/photos/the-science-of-the-expanse-season-1-episode-6#196535

Valyrian

I always wondered what would happen when reactors find a show they clearly hate! Only 3 more episodes to the end of the season and then you can quit.

Sweet Owl

I hope they won't quit honestly, it's one of the best sci-fi series out there and as a fellow trekker I'm quite sure at least Simone will love it... probably George too even if now his reaction is a bit disappointing.

Tim Arnold

I think it's safe at this point to conclude that this show is just not appropriate for their reacting style - they wind up spending time riffing and joking and then missing story details, and this is a show that really demands your attention in order to follow it. It's a bummer they aren't digging the show but I'm not enjoying these reactions very much either.

Thomas Yanez

I have hope that it isn't a lost cause based on their reaction to Amos this episode - both of them acknowledging that there is more there than their first impression led them to believe. Now, they just need to be willing to apply it to EVERY OTHER THING IN THE SHOW. There are many layers to pretty much everything and we've only just begun.

Teo

"this is a show that really demands your attention in order to follow it" - so, no interaction during the show but still "react" to it? A show shouldn't demand attention, it should deserve it by the way it's made. Also, the level of entitlement to say "you're reacting wrong", oh God...

Jack Burton

people need to understand/remember this was a sci-fi channel show... low budget, had to stuff a lot in quick. they were fighting to make the show as good as they could get it in the first seasons. I promise you this isn't like a normal show where the characters are introduced as how they always will be. the story, the places, and the characters arc and they never stop evolving.

Śéáń

I wonder how tired George is of reading the comments under the Expanse posts..!

Ghostwriter

That's a good thought about watching this so close to Firefly. The two shows have such different tones/flavors. I wonder if this might be a little like trying some savory curry right after eating a chocolate eclair. It could be an absolutely delicious curry, but when your taste buds are primed for dessert, it's still going to taste wrong.

Ghostwriter

George, in another video you mentioned liking the novel Children of Time. I agree, a masterpiece. One aspect of it kind of reminds me of The Expanse: even though technically the individual spider characters get replaced each chapter, there's a sense of continuity because the real "character" that we're invested in following as it changes, evolves, and grows is the spider civilization itself. I feel The Expanse is similar. It's a story with basically three characters: Earth, Mars, and The Belt. Earth is older, sometimes corrupt, feels entitled and fearful of losing its status, yet also feels a twinge of regret and even self-loathing for having messed up its life/planet. Mars is young, tough, and hungry, driven to improve itself, contemptuous of Earth for squandering so much potential, but also a bit of a bully toward the Belt. The Belt is hard-working by necessity, constantly struggling to survive, feels exploited and picked on by both Earth and Mars. All the humans, like the spiders, are manifestations of those three "characters/personalities," to varying degrees. (The Rocinante is interesting because it forces together representatives of all three in close quarters under high stress, with results that are... well, you'll see.) To me, the societies/planets almost feel like the "real" characters. Maybe that helps make the world-building and characterization more palatable?

Emptysea93

Once again I am going to make my plea to those of your trying to force George and Simone to like the show. Just stop, we aren’t here to watch you, we are here to watch them, and if they don’t like something let it be. I get that you are all fans of the Expanse, I am too, but trying to constantly convince them is not only annoying it’s actually creepy. Let them have their opinions and feel the way they feel without telling them they are wrong or that they need to trust your tastes. And if they don’t end up liking the Expanse that much, let them move on and stop trying to guilt them into it.

Just a reminder about the Rotten Tomatoes scores for the seasons: S1 78% S2 95% S3 100% S4 100% S5 100% S6 95%

Adverb

Yep, I think I'm out. This is really a wonderful show, but I hope you guys move on to something you both enjoy watching.

"Rocinante" is the name of Don Quixote's horse in the eponymous novel (masterpiece) by Miguel de Cervantes. EDIT: Also a few notes: in episode 6 when Anderson Dawes mentions that the old space helmets used to burn peoples' necks and shows that scar around his own neck; his scar configuration matches the tattoos that all of the younger belters (including Naomi) have around their necks. Additionally, that kid (Diogo) who is helping his uncle haul rocks in space (again in episode 6) is the same kid that Miller busted (and let go) on Ceres for stealing water a few episodes ago!

Torsten Maekler

Judging from the dates your Episodes were uploaded to Youtube you pretty much watched the first 6 episodes almost back to back. That for sure is a bit tough - especially when it is such a complex show to begin with. The series is settled now in its basic form; the main cast ist on the Rocinante and the rest of the interesting guys are in their place. There are two main characters who will join in later; but you'll get to know them slowly but steadily. Seeing forward for the rest of Season One. And again: I bet that Simones reaction to the end of season 1 will be: "What the fuck?" :-)

Trepanation21

That's actually a pretty useful way of succinctly framing the series when someone runs into some trouble getting started (which happens a lot...), IMO.

Trepanation21

Similarly, they're grown ups, and perfectly capable of making their own choices about whether to continue or not. You doing... whatever this is is superfluous.

Spooky Dooky

This is a long ass show.... and everytime I try to watch it I get bored. I may drop my membership until you guys finish it.

Victor

The first season of The Expanse is a slow burn, and George in particular may enjoy this show more watching it on his own (time permitting). I rushed through season one when i watched it and struggled in season 2 to understand what was going on. However, the characters grew on me during season 2 and couldn't stop watching after that!

Gryff

Sorry guys, not into it. Shows not gripping me and everyone is an asshole.

Florian Hoyer

well its more realistic xD i dont see how "everyone" is an asshole i feel george is also a bit to harsh xD

Florian Hoyer

i feel george is a bit to harsh in that he has made up his mind how some characters are and he wanna have proof for it xD like the show is more realistic they dont just go happy fun fun every time a decision comes up so there is talk and anger and in the end they do the right stuff ^^ isnt that how life is ? xD

Florian Hoyer

honestly starting with s2 its hard to imagine a show george would love more then the expanse xD s1 is a slow burn but thats known xD (also remember that the 1st season basicly only ends mid season 2)

Torsten Maekler

You mean the first book ends mid season 1. Though they mixed in stuff from book 2 into season 1, as well as the smaller booklets like "The Butcher of Anderson Station"...

Florian Hoyer

i am honestly scared they stop after season 1 without even watching it to the end of book 1 ... which would be such unfullfilling xD especially with its getting so much better further down the road theres a reason this is one of VERY FEW shows ever that was canceled and amazon went like "hell no" and just bought and continued it xD to have amazon buy the show and continue it... its need to be amazing xD

Einherj

I still think they would like Battlestar Galactica (2003) more.

Andrew Smith

Eh I don't know if they don't like the darker themes of the expanse I don't think they would like bsg. They might like stargate

Einherj

I don't think it's the darker themes, I think it's the storytelling. BSG has a more traditional way of storytelling.

Eleven

honestly, i'm still subscribed, but not really watching along with you guys anymore, already 5 eps into season 5 since i started the first episode with them, and i am SO hooked. yeah, it starts a bit slow, but once you're in-- i am VERY much enjoying this. whether george and simone continue or not, i am VERY glad that they (and the polls) were a deciding vote for me to start the series, so thanks guys!

Viilutaja

When are next Expanse episodes coming up?

Shep

I was hooked into Expanse after episode 4. Others I know where hooked in after episodes 8 and 9. For every person saying they're not into it, may unsub, etc. I am sure I'm not the only person who re-subbed specifically because Expanse is a Patreon exclusive. If somebody doesn't enjoy something, though, there's no amount of poking them to try harder that will eventually make someone like it. That said, however, I feel like finishing Season 1 and then making a decision is at least a fair shot, even though it doesn't finish the Book 1 story of this series.

Johann Du Toit

I'm here for the Expanse, like I came here for Chernobyl. Even if it's not 100% their cup of tea, it's the kind of show which will gain them more patreons.

Torsten Maekler

We'll see if they fall in love with the Expanse. In the latter half of Season 1 the show goes into the right direction and will throw out some hooks to catch on. I wonder, though, if George and Simone's low level of understanding about the characters' harsh ways comes from a general cultural "misunderstanding." We have grown up with Star Trek and a mindset that it is best for us as humanity to learn to work together and prioritize global problems, coupled with a (Western) society where you don't have to worry about your daily bread (more or less). This is completely different with the Belters. Here, the daily struggle for survival counts for a lot, and politically, humanity has just not grown together, but has preferred its own political ideals and factions. And the series tries to show exactly this: how would our future look like, if we do not all steer towards a common goal, but continue to give priority to the "I and my faction". Also, if we continue to consider some groups as second class, etc., what this makes of us and what problems this brings. Expanse is not called "Game of Thrones" in Space for nothing.... . And maybe they just expected more Trek than GoT.... .

Who Are These People

I'd like to see them react to X-Files or What We Do in the Shadows.

Kaizen

I like the Miller detective plotline following Julie Mao, and I really like the ending of Season 1, but I think I stopped watching after Season 2... i recall it being so much politics and whatnot that it just wasn't holding my interest.

Chris Lüders

In my opinion, BSG is the best SciFi show of the last 20 years. 👍😊 I liked the series (and movies) even more than The Expanse.

Johann Du Toit

I get the feeling Simone is liking it, but George is very obviously not feeling it and nitpicking everything. But Simone is not gonna argue it online. To each their own, we'll see if they continue... I'd prefer if they do, but it's not fun watching George only find faults either.

Johann Du Toit

George complaining non-stop about Naomi complaining non-stop! :-D

Generators

what a weird complain to have though. like the point of first time react is to see how they may react which can be both good or negative. i mean would you prefer for him to pretend to like the show just to satisfy your fandom? what would be the point of that. but when hes being genuine, ya'll complain cause he isnt being genuine in the specific way you prefer.

Johann Du Toit

Did I complain? I was making a joke about George complaining about Naomi complaining (even had a smiley at the end!). They're the only ones complaining. And now you complaining about me and others who should not be allowed to complain about others complaining. See how that works? ;-) But yeah, it's okay to complain - it's a free country.

Ivo Costa

If you end up watching the whole series you´ll understand Naomi´s atitude. It´s intentional/in character/background related, not a casting fault as you mention. That said, tough, her acting skills do improve over the seasons - some even feel that she should at least have been nominated for an Emmy for season 5. As for the Holden casting complaint (appearing to be confused all the time), again i refer you to the conversation between his mother and Avasarala. And if you´re not familiar with it, or didn´t connect the dots, do a quick read up on Cervantes´s and his "Don Quijote". I do hope you give the show one more chance (at least to finish the book 1 story), but having watched all your Expanse videos, i have to say that, besides missing important dialog/video information when you were talking, you also missed the mark on so many other things that you saw/heard... Maybe coming to this with so little time after Firefly didn´t do any good. Completely different types of shows.
