"Fail Safe" 1964, Henry Fonda, is a must.

brian burke

good movie, did you know there was pretty good remake made by george clooney and starry richard dreyfuss and others?

Kevin R Studer

Peter Sellers playing the president, Colonel Mandrake, and Dr. Strangelove inspired a lot of the multi-role performances later in Hollywood. Just a fantastic performance from him.

Robert Cooper

All the character names in this movie are just fantastic. George noted how long the early phone call shot with Gen Turgidson's secretary was, but the "Fuck you I'm Stanley Kubrick" of that shot was having mirrors on three walls during a tracking shot, and you never see a camera or a boom in any of them. This is a strong contender for my favorite movie of all time.

Robert Cooper

I will also note, there is a great movie about the Cuban Missile Crisis called "Thirteen Days" that is fantastic. It is on a very short list of Kevin Costner movies I like.

Love that you're doing this reaction!! This one is in my favorite top 5 movies of all time. Can't wait to watch this tonight. Hope you caught the Soviet Ambassador breaking character and trying not to crack up during Peter Sellers monologue at the end.

HeyHeyJK

I long considered this to be my favorite film of all time (I have the war room as a background on my phone lock screen), but then "No Country for Old Men" nudged it out of that top spot. But, hey, #2 ain't so bad, right? So happy you watched this one! Peter Sellers was a pretty horrible person in real life, but what an amazing actor he was.

Michael_AP

What a great surprise, and great great reaction. I love how you both cracks up at the end in the Strangelove scene :)

stephen phillips

Love your reaction. You guys should some other classic movies (Nothing to do with this one) like north by north west, rear window, vertigo. All 50s movie’s in color. Really worth checking out.

If you want to see the version of this that WILL sh*t you up - I make the case again for Threads…

Britt Ekland, Sellers's wife for four years, said that he needed help but wasn't given any because he was too valuable to the show biz. She thought that he might've been bipolar, but based on personal experience, I'd say from the descriptions of his behavior that he exhibited some symptoms of borderline personality disorder. Especially the fact that he reported that he felt like he had no real personality to begin with, no "Peter Sellers" behind his brilliant characters. I don't want to excuse his behavior but I keep wondering what could've been if he'd received modern diagnosis and treatment.

To answer your question, the Vaults in Fallout ARE inspired by film, however that movie is A Boy And His Dog (which in turn was adapted from an Ellison story). It’s also very bleak, weird, and wacky- it features a raider and his telepathic dog who wander the Wasteland in search of food and women. The “Vault” elements are truly bizarre in the best way.

Watch Casablanca and it will then be the oldest movie from your channel. You would also enjoy it. It is a rare classic with many phrases that have become part of our culture even today. Another good one is Whale Rider. It explains the culture that is in the movie, Moana. There is also another tremendous young actor reminiscent of Haley Joel Osment.

George and Simone, it was a scary time back then. The movie gave one a good, but nervous laugh. The country was divided about the Vietnam War already and many were concerned that the military was not competently handling the war. This was concerning as the Cold War was also in full bloom along with political assassinations and civil rights upheaval. I remember the 12:00 Friday air raid siren tests and the school nuclear war drills of squatting on all 4’s in the hall against the wall with our hands covering our head as though that would protect us from a nuclear bomb dropping on us. I lived Richland, Wa. at the time, near the site called Hanford where the plutonium for one on the bombs dropped on Japan was produced. We thought we might be a possible target, but thankfully no Dr Strangelove scenario came to be. The movie did help our parts of our country to have a discussion about whether our procedures for getting into a nuclear confrontation was thoroughly well thought out or not. The 60’s were a time of upheaval and social change in the US. It was a messy, exciting, horrendous and crazy time to be growing up.

Who Are These People

What made it all more scary (looking back now) is not that some lunatic would decide to start a war, but how easy it is for "adults in charge" to just mess something up. Like, one bad solder on a circuit board or wrong line of code in the nuclear control computers and 'oops yeah, forgot to close that loop' and something launches.

Adam Wetstein

It is a satire version of the orginal Failsafe

Who Are These People

Simone describing the President's attempts to calm down the hysterical Dmitri as 'like a boyfriend or something' says more about her disposition than she may have realized she was revealing :D

Robert Cooper

Ehhh. It is related to Failsafe as a nuclear movie of the time, but as the credits note, it was based on a book... A non-comedy book. Failsafe is a great movie and a wonderful morality play, but it is strangely less realistic than this movie.

Moni Castaneda

This movie ALMOST had a sequel called "Son of Strangelove" in the (very) early stages of writing but it was canceled after... Kubrick or the other Screenwriter died, can't remember the details. I know because I'm a big fan of Terry Gilliam and he mentioned Kubrick wanted him to direct it but he found out after his death... would have been awesome... speaking of Gilliam... some suggestions: Time Bandits, Brazil, The Fisher King, 12 Monkeys.

Dooly

George has quite astute observations and commentary.

Who Are These People

George is the 2nd most intelligent reactor I've seen, based on how quickly and accurately they discern and figure things out about the movies.

michael clarke

someones probably said it, but to me, the reason he called it doctor strange love was because he was trying to draw attention to the nazi scientists brought over after world war 2. the entire movie was about their incompetence, but strangeloves presence points to actual malice. all these scientists that should have been prosecuted for war crimes were working in the highest levels of government... just because of russian paranoia.

Eleven

I do not avoid women, but I do deny them my essence.

MnemoniusMaxim

Ahhh! My absolute favorite film of all time! I know what I'm doing for the next couple hours!

Russ Verbofsky

George, your knowledge of history is impressive.

Torsten Maekler

You should watch "Thirteen Days" after this one - how close did we come to the edge of annihilation.
