Watching it now, and I love it so much. Review's opening line: "Star Trek won't work" *Womp womp*

George finally needs to watch an older Star Trek show

Ken Schneyer

Simone, this film is based primarily on TOS, not TNG. Gwen's "repeating the computer" trope is a take on Nichelle Nichol's complaint that all Lt. Uhura ever did in TOS was "open hailing frequencies."

Jason Nesmith's relationship to his cast also comes from TOS. William Shatner was notoriously disliked by the rest of the cast in TOS, primarily because he saw it as a vehicle for his own career and was markedly ungenerous when it came to the other actors. He was known to read scripts multiple times in order to *count* *the* *lines* to make sure that Spock wasn't being given more air time than Kirk. He was also unaware of the animosity they had for him until he began to write a memoir ("Star Trek Memories") and started to interview the other cast members . . . who gave him an earful.

Alexander Dane's frustration/agony that he has been reduced to a silly alien trope and cannot do the kind of acting he wants, as well as his later realization that he has done real good with his role, also comes from TOS. In the 1970s Leonard Nimoy actually wrote a memoir called "I Am Not Spock", hoping to free himself up for the other serious acting work he wanted to do. (I saw him live onstage twice, once as Sherlock Holmes and once as Theo Van Gogh, and he was spectacular.) Later in his life Nimoy came to appreciate how much Spock meant to people, and how lucky he'd been to provide such an inspiration to others.

...But I can't help thinking that Lt. Loredo is a dig at Wesley Crusher . ;)

Proof Simone is really a Thermian

Gaius Frakking Baltar

One of the great things about this movie is that it spoofs some tropes from Star Trek TOS & TNG (like Captain Kirk often ending up shirtless during hand-to-hand combat, or sexy female officers relegated to doing a "stupid job") without malice towards those shows or condescension towards the TOS/TNG fandom. There's a fantastic 2019 documentary on Amazon Prime about the making of GQ called "Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary". It offers some great tidbits, such as how Enrico Colantoni invented the Thermians' style of walking & talking for his audition - the director loved Colantoni's audition so much that he used it as a template for the other actors cast as Thermians. The documentary is also a bit sad; some of the GQ cast & crew discuss Alan Rickman's untimely passing.

The Inedible Mattman!

George, I love ya brother. You are a great reactor and one of my favorite people to watch. But it is a CRIME that you have never seen Battlestar Galactica. ESPECIALLY considering what you do for a living!! OMG Simone - Please please please make George watch BSG. Even if you guys don't do it for the channel, he NEEDS to see it. It's the 2nd best sci fi show of all time (in my opinion) and the whole idea of robot consciousness is right up George's personal and professional ally.

I think you refer to the 2000s series but also the original one from the late 1970s was great! I also loved Space: Above and Beyond from the mid 1990s

Kaizen

Fun Fact: They made prosthetic boobs for Sigourney Weaver, and she had SO much fun with them, she was going around the set in between takes and flaunting them in the face of men on the set including director, crew, etc, making them really uncomfortable... LOL

The Inedible Mattman!

Yes sir, the one by Ronald Moore. I’ve seen both, and while the original does hold a place in my heart, I absolutely LOVE the remake. And with George’s interest in Ai and computer sentience, this show would be perfect for him.

Tom Smith

There is a great documentary called Never Surrender about Galaxy Quest that's really worth watching. I believe that there is a Galaxy Quest series in the works with Simon Peggy's production company.

I hope you see this comment George and/or Simone.. I realized tonight that you never finished The Cornetto Trilogy… I hope you can knock out Worlds End at some point, for the sake of completeness if nothing else..

Torsten Maekler

This reaction made my day. So great, you two 😊

george: "are they actual aliens?!" simone: *snicker snicker snicker*

A Red Mage Named Blue

Galaxy Quest didn't have to go so hard on the ship design, but we're glad they did. It's honestly one of the best starship designs. Period.

Please...consider the following movies:

Rocky's complete. The Game, Hot Shots, Scent of a woman, 12 Monkeys, Stand by me, and the secuels of Lethal Weapon...gracias.

I think most of this show comes from parodying Star Trek (TOS) and Star Trek The Next Generation. Here's a list of the few shows that are necessary to get most of the jokes. You'll have to research Shatner and his love-hate relationship with the fans if you want that side. ST(TOS) S01E18 "Arena" - example of a redshirt dying - bare chested Kirk forms more than a rudimentary lathe ST(TOS) S02E10 "Mirror, Mirror" - is just an awesome episode - shows them using a Jeffries tube ST:TNG S01E08 "Justice" - presents a child pilot similar to Tommy Weber ST:TNG S01E23 "Skin of Evil" - shows the season 2 cleavage suit of Deanna Troi I'm almost sure there's a ST(TOS) episode where Kirk and Spock fake a fight to escape from a jail cell, but I can't find it easily. Also watch all of "Veronica Mars" to see more Enrico Colantoni. And watch most of "Monk" to see more Tony Shalhoub. Both series are great.

I highly recommend the documentary For the Love of Spock which is on Netflix. The ending tribute to Leonard Nimoy took place at Burning Man and is guaranteed to draw tears.

Gryff

I believe the Kirk/Spock fight is in the episode Amok Time. There's also a much more gratuitous example of sexual exploitation in Next Gen. in the episode The Price. Where Troi and Crusher do yoga for a minute and a half while having small talk.
