WOW! You both nail this one in the intro! I look forward to the look on your faces when you realize you are correct.

More Edgar Wright, please! If you want to see an early collaboration between him, Pegg, and Frost, I suggest the TV series Spaced. It’s 2 seasons with limited episodes (hooray for British TV) and you’ll now see some of the sparks for later projects. Also, Baby Driver is such a great film (albeit perhaps a bit awkward due to the inclusion of Kevin Spacey in a supporting role) but Wright’s directorial work on it is superb.

I'm not a big fan of Baby Driver tbh but Last Night in Soho is aces

Bit of a long but interesting comment to appreciate the movie even more. The flashback at the very beginning spells all the events coming "there was drinking, fun, controversy (Gary is barred from the pub) ladies (Sam gets here), shots, drama (the brawl in the toilets), and of course there was drinking' Also when he says "pint six put Omen out of commission", that corresponds to the pub where he gets replaced by a Blank. At the 9th pints you see young Andy ready to fight, ripping his shirt, just like the present one. After the Beehive is where they leave Pete on a bench (or in the forest). Also at the end, you can see the comet/spaceship arriving on Earth. And also, and the thing that blows my mind, is that all the pub names foreshadow the events happening in it. The First Post : self-explanatory The Old Familiar : same pub as the first one, Starbuckig, déjà-vu. The Famous Cock : Gary is recognized and barred, from being a cock in the days. Cross Hands : Where they fight. The Good Companions : They all drink together for the first time, acting as if all was okay, and they"re just 5 friends. The Trusty Servant : Where they meet Reverend Greene, and also learn the meaning of the word Robot : Slave/servant The Two-Headed Dog : the fight with the creepy twins. The Mermaid : The Marmelade Sandwich, seducing the boys just like sirens/mermaids The Beehive : James Bond explains how they all work, how the'yre connected, like a...you guessed it, a beehive. The King's Head : Maybe more to it, but the one where Gary really looses his head, abandonning his friends. Also, the logo of the pub kinda ressembles him. The Hole in the Wall : Steven drives into the wall with The Beast. The World's End : Well.... There are a million more details, but just knowing that the whole movie is kinda revealed in the first 5 minutes is genius.

Second that, if you don't mind a bit of scary, his newest 'Last Night in Soho' is also great!

NOOOO don't hate yourselves. "The King", ahem, rounding up his mates and finding that one shining vessel in the end but he's denied it... I'd say there's a meaning in that although I don't know Arthuriana well enough to say how much. Gary gets a sword in the end but I don't think he drew it from a stone or was distributed it by a strange woman lying in a pond.

I thought the meaning of the film was pretty obvious, Gary represents the conservative who looks at the past and tradition with rose colored glasses whereas the Blanks represent the progressives who want progress at all cost, even if it means destroying humanity and freedom. Gary, just like many conservatives, seem to have selective memory and only look at the good parts of the past while ignoring all the bad. The Blanks, just like progressives don't mind steam rolling over many innocent people to get what they want, and even turning people into "not slaves", to join their collective. Its basically just the age old individualism vs collectivism debate again, in the form of a Pub Crawl. The basic question, is freedom important enough to sacrifice basic comfort and safety? Would you rather be in a "free society" or a "civilised society"? etc Personally I reject the false dichotomy, I think you can be free and civilised, I don't think they exclude each other. But then again there are many people who do seem to disagree with me. I thought the film was fairly on the nose but who knows, maybe I'm just overthinking it.

Wrwemi

What? No. You're just applying your own vues/biases on the characters. Edgar Wright has never put anything remotely close to political commentary in any of his movies

wroot

When the last time you say? I have literally went to my fridge and took some ice cream to watch your reaction :D sadly, not Cornetto..

gobmob2000

If that's the case them it seems very coincidental. Gary literally said "It's our basic human right to be f**k ups" towards the end and they had a massive conversation about these concepts. Just watch the debate scene again at The Worlds End, and you'll see what I mean. The entire conversation is about Individualism vs Collectivism. It's the same concept as in the Demolition Man.

Somehow i liked this one the most. Pegg's character is bad, but still so likable :)

Logan Kerlee

lmao, welp I'm nearly on point with what the doctor's suggest! xD I'm nearly always inside and I'm ALWAYS sitting, with a slight slouch. Hooray for wheelchair status! xD

Just because you can interpret a message doesn't mean a message was meant to be sent. Sometimes a guy just writes a movie that he thinks will be fun to make.

I love the sharp cut to The Housemartins' "Happy Hour" at the end. Also, your faces when The Movie Changed Gears (in the bathroom when Gary met the first Blank) was priceless.

gobmob2000

But the logical inverse is true as well, neither does it mean that a message was not meant to be sent. Now maybe that wasn't Edgars or Simon's intention, but its a little on the nose for me to call it a coincidence. I think that is the message those two wanted to send.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

I can't pick a favorite of the Cornetto Trilogy, all so intentional and unique, and this has all the hilarious meta jokes about the trilogy itself. I think Simon Pegg jumped over at least six fence like things. I love "Rugby" Nick Frost, Andy was basically the hero. And the Mad Max vibe at the end, I'm a huge fan of that franchise and I know everyone loves Fury Road, but it would be pretty cool if someone reacted to the whole series, just saying The writing, well everything really was so great in this, I miss the triumvirate, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and Edgar Wright were so awesome together. One of these days you gotta check out "Spaced", almost the entire main cast had cameos in this one, as did Mary the sad cashier Zombie and Noel the 17 year old cart/trolley zombie.

Jim Frykman

I slouched SO hard out of contempt during the intro ;)

Lindsay G

Spaced was brilliant, but it's a pity Jessica Hynes doesn't really get any of the credit for it.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

That's very true, not only was she great on the show, she was a co-creator and writer. I wish the show lasted longer but I loved the finale.

dudist Priest

Great review. The Cornetto trilogy is brilliant. There's so much detail in those films that one can watch again and again and still be surprised every so often by some previously unnoticed bit popping up. On another note, have y'all ever seen any Ralph Bakshi flicks? You might know the 1979 Lord of the Rings adaptation he did. His film American Pop is kind of amazing, and his animation style is pretty interesting. Also, while I'm mentioning movies, if y'all haven't heard of Bubba Ho-Tep, it's a lot of fun. It stars Bruce Campbell, who y'all might recognize from most Sam Raimi movies. (Most recently you saw him in Multiverse of Madness playing Pizza Poppa, the dude Doctor Strange magicked into punching himself for three weeks.)

Boomtown Rat

Love these guys to much (and you guys too!). Please watch Spaced! It's Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Jessica Hines, Mark Heap and so many others you'll have seen in all 3 of their movies. It is awesome and your soul will love you for eternity :)

Kinokind

"Paul!" Why does everyone forget "Paul"? Pegg and Frost did another equally brilliant movie which wasn't directed by Edgar Wright, called "Paul". In it they portray two sci-fi nerds visiting the states for the first time to go to Comicon and travel cross country visiting sites like Rosswell and the Black Mailbox. While traveling, they encounter a real alien, voiced by Seth Rogan, and try to help him. There are more references to sci-fi in TV and films than one can imagine squeezed into this film. It is hilarious. See the unrated version for maximum hilarity.
