Perfect for my day of painting miniatures

To answer your question at the end in a neutral fashion: at the time of release, I remember reading a lot of criticism of this movie differs from the actual events and the book that reports them. Wikipedia is a decent gateway to more if you're interested. Also, no shade on any of the shows you watch, but the BEST Patreon exclusives are random things at the beginning of these videos :D Honestly, the combination of effortless goofing around with predictable professionalism in how you run the channel is impressive. So much bang for the b... euro. Bureau?

With the number of YouTube followers..... If it's possible to set up a YouTube vote, where only followers are allowed to vote (and not the whole lot of YouTube users), then that might be a way to make people click the follow button. Not too often, as that might make people here think it's not worth to be on Patreon, but often enough to make people on YouTube follow you there..... maybe bi-monthly or so 🤔

thats not a thing, youtube polls can be voted on by anyone who sees it. non subscribers can vote on polls if they watch a channel a lot but never sub, and the poll shows up anyways in recommended.

Rangers are, as far as I know, the most highly trained mass deployed soldiers in the US army,

For more Josh Hartnett, I highly recommend Lucky Number Slevin (2006). And btw, everybody who wasn't in this movie, was in Expendables 2 (2012) ;)

Big time enjoyed this one! Solid movie for sure. I'm very glad that you guys gave this a watch. Great choice Patrons! I don't remember if I voted for this one or not, but doesn't matter - this was an excellent watch. George!! "He definitely did not have the grace of Legolas." That's fucked, man. hahahaha, hilarious though.

Too high profile as in the US government has to start acknowledging that there's a whole _thing_ going on with US troops (as opposed to pretending otherwise - oh hey, at least that's not going on in Somalia now..); plus yes you start killing hundreds of civilians with a piece of kit like the AC130 it becomes high profile in that regard too. How accurate is it - it's complicated; at the basic level it's pretty accurate but the book it's based on is dramatised in some respects anyway so you have to work from remembering that it is dramatised; the usual suspects claim it is racist, never quite figured that one out because you can just as easily take it as a bad look for US SF, I suspect the Pakistani military were a bit hard done by, the tone of the way they're depicted makes it look like they didn't give a toss but it's their guys too and yeah, US forces didn't tell anybody they were going in so nobody is ready to provide support - but knowing what some of the ranking guys in those militaries are like I have no problem believing they slow-played them as a "f*ck you". Timing of the movie is _completely_ coincidental by the way, the movie was already being made long before. The reason there's so many great practical helicopter shots in this is that the US Army provided the helis and the pilots which is why that's a thing, thumbs up to the US Army on that one because they could have easily said "No, F you" - and also some of the pilots involved in shooting the movie were actually flying some of the aircraft during the actual event. I dunno, this movie there's a lot of supporting trivia that's well worth reading about - they absolutely nailed the believable soldier realism aspect for sure (I know guys just like Sizemore's character). Yeah this movie is a lot, and yeah _everybody_ is in it - some everybody before they were even known like Tom Hardy who was a complete unknown at the time and is practically only just credited, which is crazy looking back - including half the cast of Trainspotting, weirdly, a grossly disproportionate amount of British actors. Speaking of the timing - there's a fairly substantial (and highly plausible) theory that the events depicted are why Clinton was gun-shy when the opportunity to take out Bin Laden arose - oh, how things could be different.

With regards to 'ranking' of the Rangers within the US military that's a very complex question. It's really more about what the particular mission is and which branch has been tasked with it than anything like a formal pecking order. What further complicates matters are that special forces units even within themselves are far from monolithic but have sub-units which further specialize for certain tasks and recruit personnel from one another. At it's most basic the Rangers (that is the US Ranger regiments proper rather than personnel who underwent the training and wear the tab) are light infantry, a very highly trained one. They deploy and fight in larger units and are the guys you send when you need to seize an airport deep in enemy territory and hold it until you can airlift in reinforcements with tanks and artillery, or if you have a high value target that is guarded by more enemy soldiers than a small unit like say a SEAL team can handle on its own and need somebody to provide backup while they do their thing. Rangers on average also tend to skew younger than members of other special forces since they recruit directly from the civilian population rather than veterans from other military units. With all of that as a caveat there is a sorta-kinda-but-not-really hierarchy among US special forces, the Tiers. Tier 1 are DEVGRU (SEAL Team Six) and Delta Force. Usually admittance into Tier 1 units is only possible after service in a Tier 2 unit. For example Delta Force is totally comprised of members from existing Tier 2 spec ops units, as for DEVGRU one must also be ex-spec ops unlike regular SEAL Teams which admittance does not require prior military service. Correspondingly these are older men. Tier 2 are the Army Rangers, Green Berets, SEALs, MARSOC and Marine Force Recon. The requirements for joining a Tier 2 unit are incredibly high but still somewhat less demanding than Tier 1. For example, the regular Navy SEALs (Tier 2) have a dropout/washout rate of 80–85% during training whereas the British Special Air Service (SAS) has a dropout rate of 90–95% and more importantly only people with three years plus military service prior are allowed to apply. In terms of the US, Delta Force (which was trained by the SAS initially) has a dropout rate similar to the SAS and like it all Delta members are recruited exclusively from Tier 2 veterans. IOW Tier 2 units require you to be in the epitome of fitness and strength etc. Whereas Tier 1 units require the aforementioned things to a greater extent as well as an already fully developed military skill set from prior military service. It's also they tend to be a bit older, late twenties to early thirties while your typical freshly minted Ranger will be in his early twenties. And then of course you've got cases like the CIA’s SAD and within that the paramilitary Special Operations Group (SOG) aka 'The Activity', aka 'The Army of Northern Virginia' (*) who recruit from Tier 1 units the same way Tier 1 does from Tier 2. These guys are the template Ian Fleming used when he created the book version of James Bond or at the very least the ones Felix Leitner would call to back up James when it's time to storm the Volcano Lair and secure the Doomsday Device. _________________________________________________________ * = because Robert E. Lee's command during the US civil war was named the Army of West Virginia and the CIA headquarters Langley is located in northern Virginia. Yes it's dumb. Welcome to military humor.

First, the referance to High Profile Targets meant that some of the men they were trying to capture were high ranking (a.k.a. high profile) men of Aidid's militia and government. I remember when this happened. I remember seeing news footage of Somalis dragging the bodies of the 2 Delta snipers down the street naked. I remember 2 weeks of wondering if Durant would be brought home or executed by the Somalis. The military was vague about the details of what happened there and the full extent of the battle wasn't really known for years. The public was only told that there was a battle, 2 Black Hawk Helicopters were shot down and most of the crew of both were dead, Durant was captured and 2 Delta Snipers were killed defending Durant.

40 days and 40 nights - Josh Hartnett for Simone and the rest of the cast for George, kinda a Rom-Com

Odd Thomas

30 Days of Night. Great Josh Hartnett movie AND one of the best vampire movies imo

Foodassassin4life

Another good Josh Hartnett movie is Lucky Number Slevin. It of course has Josh Hartnett, Lucy Liu, Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Ben Kingsley and Stanley Tucci

Juan C Perez

A US propaganda movie ho well.

AC10

Not the extended edition? I'm shocked

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Yeah you guessed it, Josh Hartnett was the biggest star at the time. Orlando Bloom and Tom Hardy were unknown at the time, Eric Bana was relatively new as well. I thought it was kinda funny that Ewan Bremner was credited before so many other actors but at the time he was still probably semi-famous for the same reason Ewan McGregor was, TRAINSPOTTING.

When I was in basic training in 2006, We had this drill sergeant that had a melt down when we chose this movie for our graduation party the night before our graduation ceremony. He threw a chair across the room and left. Out of all the drill sergeants we had, He was always the most unpredictable so I just thought he was being his crazy self. Another DS later told us that he was part of this mission as a combat medic. He lived through that scene...all of those scenes. I don't think I have respected someone more at that time in my life. He was one of the most interesting people I have ever met. What a crazy life he lived.

Odd Thomas

On a technical level I thought the film was excellent. My main problem with it is there are so many characters and we're thrown right into the action not knowing anything about them that it all feels like a video game.

JayF

Yeah this was a tough watch. I was alive and old enough to be politically aware when all of this happened. It still pisses me off. As you pointed out, it's a good movie. There are some inaccuracies as there always are. A quick wiki search will reveal them to you.

Jeff I.

Yeah, I'd heard so much about this movie and gave it a try last week when it won the poll, but I couldn't get into it at all. I didn't feel a connection or concern for any of the characters, and some of the acting could have been better.

Torsten Maekler

Your all time favorite Bill Paxton wasn't in this movie... ;-)

Haye Zeus

I like this movie, but yeah the heavy handed dialogue really does kind of irk me. It feels like a commercial for the military in those moments. But the action is great and I think its technicality is brilliant.

AC10

Josh Hartnett Pearl Harbor 2001. Main character and yes there are sweaty scenes too.

Thomas Hollingsworth

It would be nice if you can say if it's the extended version/directors cut/or regular version! Thank you! Enjoy your content :)

AC10

Just in case you missed it they always say the runtime just before they start playing the movie for that very reason. I guess including it in the title could make it a little faster. I just skip ahead catch the runtime and go back to beginning when I start watching. Takes 10 seconds.
