What made the original Jumanji book so special was the absolutely visionary illustration by author Chris Van Allsberg. He was also responsible for the classic children’s book The Polar Express.

Man, was I an early Kirsten Dunst fan and this was one of my favorite movies of hers back in the day along with Interview with the Vampire and Little Women. I had the chance to meet her once and she couldn’t have been nicer. I love this film because it goes in some random directions and features what I thought at the time was great CGI in the animals. Just a funny film overall.

The modern remake is like 100% different. I think it is likely to disappoint you if you go into it hoping for the same depth of characterization and drama the original had. Much better if you think of it as a totally different movie, comedy action flick and don't compare to original. But if you liked the original, the sequel to it, Zathura, is the same idea with a sci-fi game instead of a jungle game. While not quite as tight or coherent as the original, it was pretty good and had some interesting star power (Dax Shephard, Josh Hutherson, TIm Robbins, Kristen Stewart).

George, you keep saying you thought they went into the game.... that's the 2 newest Jumunji movies with Dwayne Johnson.....i am unsure about Zathura, i have not seen it yet but i think it is Jumanji 2 (in the release order)....

One of my favorite movies as a kid. But I do have to say 7 or 8 year old me was horrified by a lot of this. Those plants look like they were designed by H.R. Giger. Another great Robin Williams classic would be 1991's Hook in my opinion.

I love this movie :) just creative and crazy things happening all the time and I love the effects, even the CGI holds up pretty well for it's time, just the movement of the spiders look pretty cheap^^ I would not recommend watching the newer Jumanji movies, they are just your lazy made comedy movies

I knew you guys would appreciate this movie, it was great to relive it along with you. Seeing it as a kid had me scared shitless for the Van Pelt guy, I never saw someone get hunted before. Comedy is definitely not a category I would have put it in.
