Great film. I’m not a huge film of war films, but even I can recognize the greatest war films that stand the test of time and this is always listed as among the greatest war films ever made. I can’t even count how many times I’ve seen it.

Rangers are light infantry and special forces units. They have more intense training than other, more traditional Army infantry units. They usually provide support for more special operations units like Delta Force (like in this operation).

AlimonyMoney

Ranger are combat soldiers who specialize in conducting raids within enemy territory. Military version of a swat team, but are trained for close gun battles. Every unit has a translator, it could be a soldier or a local citizen. Mainly because of what happened, every unit now has a wart hog close by for close air support.

The Black Hawk helicopter is a medium size helicopter. Not really that big. The big ones are Super Stallion & Chinook (in the US arsenal). Both of those can carry about 30-40 troops, while the Black Hawk can carry about 10 troops.

Simones willingness to make a fool of herself in the intros, is a great personality trait 🖖 As always a fantastic reaction video from you two 👍

Back then, there was worldwide demand for someone to do something, (anything) to stem the deaths in Somalia. Countries all over were saying something must be done, but were unwilling to commit much of their own to do it. It was on the nightly news and the aid that was being sent wasn't getting to the people at all. Like it or not, military intervention was the ONLY thing that was going to improve the situation and the US was expected to take the brunt of the load. Pres Bush was leaving office so Clinton took over the mission. His Defense Sec was an idiot named Les Aspin and he and the rest of the admin were FAR more interested in limiting the appearance of US military might than actually supporting the military. They denied equipment that could have helped because they were worried about how it would "look" on the world stage. If you are going to commit your own military to a mission like this, you support them fully and to Hell with the hand wringers. After this, the US populace was reluctant to commit much of anything to atrocities in Rwanda, Bosnia etc. The will to help died a lot after Somalia.

Robert Cooper

The US Army has two kinds of "special forces". The Rangers and Delta. Delta is an elite combat/counter terror unit much akin to the Navy SEALs. The Rangers are a larger force. They have special forces combat training and so 'tip of the spear' stuff like airport capture, but their missions are usually based around language, culture, and strategy skills. They work with/train/operate around locals wherever they are.

As well crafted a movie it is. And it is well crafted, after all we are talking about Ridley here. In depicting real life events it lacks so much nuance. Not to mention, that they deliberately changed names and events, so that the Department of Defense would continue it’s support for the movie.

Ooh I forgot about that one.. you should watch 'The Jerk'.. the film with Steve Martin that was shown on the TV

Brendan Rafferty

Showing a clip from The jerk in the film is a reference to something that actually happened during the battle on October 3rd. As oil drums were being hit near several Rangers by Somali gun fire, one Ranger yelled to the other, quoting the film The Jerk... "Stay away from the cans! they hate the cans!" This incident was documented in the book by Mark Bowden Also trivia... Unlike in the film, the actual rules of engagement for the task force allowed them to fire first on any technical the Somalis were using... a "technical" being a pick-up track with a heavy weapon system. In the film, the Rangers do not engage a technical that is firing on civilians. This never happened. Any technical was fair game and the Somalis kept them out of sight while the task force was in the area Also... the Rangers did not choose to run back to the stadium to escort the vehicles... that makes no sense what really happened was the vehicles that came to rescue the Rangers were so crowded with responding troops from the 10th Mountain Division, they forgot to leave extra room in the vehicles for all the Rangers they were rescuing so some had no choice but to run alongside the vehicles going back Finally... civilian casualties were much higher than the film suggests. That is not because the Rangers were targeting civilians... it was because it was a tactic of the Habr gidr militia fighters to push crowds ahead of them and direct them in groups to shield their fighters from sight and literally shield them from US gunfire Many Rangers on the street that day told of seeing militiamen literally fire from behind civilian women, with the barrel of their guns sticking out under the woman's armpit. This tactic of using the crowd as shields caused the Rangers to suffer heavy casualties at first as they would hold their fire, hoping to get unobstructed shots at the fighters. The Rangers adapted and had no choice but to shoot through the human shields the fighters were using and through the crowds they were using to cover their movement Some estimates put the number of Somali dead over a thousand

Brendan Rafferty

I'm sorry but what are you talking about? Whose name was changed? The only fake names were those of Delta Force characters who were not killed as their identities are kept secret. The names of the dead Delta operators were, however, kept real. All the names of all the Rangers are also real What event do you think they changed to secure DOD cooperation?

Brendan Rafferty

A more informed answer to your question about what Rangers do... Not counting the training battalion, there are three active Ranger battalions of the 75th Ranger Regiment (about 800 men each) broken down into four companies each battalion. In 1993, one company from 3d Ranger Battalion (B company) was sent to Somalia as the main fighting force in task force ranger... that is the unit you saw portrayed in this film Army Rangers are a tier two special operations unit in SOCOM They are one of the few tier two units available to first time enlistees. The structure of a Ranger Battalion was similar to most other rapid deployment light infantry battalions That structure changed as the regiment adapted to the new wars of the 21st century... but for the sake of this film and the Rangers who fought in Mogadishu in 1993, i'll explain what the Rangers did in the 90's To be a Ranger, a recruit must first complete basic training, infantry AIT training, Airborne school... and then they must complete the screening process known as RIP... Ranger Indoctrination Program (RIP has been retooled and renamed RASP in recent years) RIP was a selection course where trainees underwent intense physical and mental screening and, unlike the training they'd had up to now, had to prove themselves masters of their required skills. those who could not make the cut would be reassigned to any of the many infantry units in the Army. those who passed selection at RIP would earn the title "Ranger" and then go on to one of the three Ranger battalions where they would endure months of hardship as the new arrivals. Rangers were essentially the most elite of the US military's light infantry with some training similar to a light infantry unit... but with much higher standards and a much more intense training tempo... in layman's terms... smarter, faster, stronger. Unlike a regular infantry unit, a soldier not able to meet the high standards would not be kept on and receive additional training.. a soldier who had difficulty keeping up to the high standards in a Ranger battalion was cut and sent packing. In addition to being the best light infantry in the world, they were also capable of performing missions that other light infantry were not Their most well known focus was airfield seizures They also worked in smaller company and platoon sized training in support of tier one units like Delta or the ISA There were also compartmentalized units within the battalions like the BCTs (Building Clearing Teams) and other sub units that are classified The modern Ranger Battalions have been restructured and much of their new make up is still classified. Within the Ranger Regiment was the Army's best reconnaissance unit, the RRD... the Regimental Reconnaissance Detachment. The RRD was repurposed in the modern wars of the 21st century and became what many consider the most elite of the tier one units, surpassing even Delta Force

I haven't seen the movie since it first came out and I totally forgot how many big name actors are in this movie. I only remembered Josh Hartnet and Eric Bana... and the helicopter pilot who played a paramedic on ER or something.
