The Wire: Season 1 - Episode 1 & 2 - Patreon Version

Q

One of the great parts of the show is that it doesn't hold your hand. There are bits of exposition, but for the most part you're just thrown into the mix and forced to figure things out. That makes you feel immersed and so much more rewarding as you're figuring things out as you go. Also, there are so many storylines/characters/quotes/sentiments that are foreshadowed and will come back later... even season's later. It might seem one way, but it's the other way...

____

somebody snappin’ pictures, they got the whole damn thing! oh, indeed. ayo lesson here, Bey: you come at the king, you best not miss! the fuck did i do? I could do this all day, but let’s just get down to it. *This is the greatest television production ever made. End of discussion. Full stop. I don’t want to hear about anything else because I’ve seen it all and nothing comes close.* Now let’s begin ಠ◡ಠ

____

Same. (I used to be here for other stuff, but I had to pay for my great-grandkid’s college and stuff so I stepped away until I noticed they were FINALLY giving this show the love, respect, and recognition it so deserves.) Cheers.

David

Hi I just subscribed, and wanted to watch your reactions to The Wire… I’m confused tho - I can only hear the audio of your voices, but not the show itself. Why is that ?

MasterElodin

Because you need to have your own copy of the show/movie they are reacting to. Providing the whole show as a video would break copyright laws.

Preston White

I just subscribed,I really wanted to see your take of this classic show, very underrated.

Byron Abrahams

Hi guys! Just joined, and excited to watch the show with you. Its fluctuated between number 1 and 2 on my all-time list for 20 years. So, to address your opening comment about how it's likely that not everyone will love this show...? That's just wrong. If there's someone who doesn't like the Wire, they need to get off the bus.

Thomas

What did I just pay for? Why can’t I hear anything and the whole screen is covered up🤔 is there another subscription level ?

Cinebinge

Hi Thomas, as written in the tier description which is available before joining, all patrons need to have their own copy of the show or movie to synchronize with our reaction. Legally we are not allowed to just show the whole show or movie as that would be piracy and illegal distribution. We provide a sync point in our video for you to play your copy of the show along side. But we do not provide the show it self as it is illegal.

Timothy Hedrick

My favorite show of all time and happy to watch it with you two! An unrelated request here: Season IV of True Detective has started airing and, unlike Seasons II and III, it is not such a disappointment compared to Season I (yay!)! It "might" even tie back to Season I!! I think you guys would love it and I know both your YT and Patreon viewers would! Please consider it.

Hexon66

I'd never noticed the John Cena thing, but that is funny. The issue with Dominic West is that, seemingly like a lot of British actors doing American accents, I guess he's been taught to chew his words.

Angela D. Mitchell

I was so psyched when I saw you guys have been watching this! It's easily one of my top 5 best shows of all time, and I've done full rewatches every 2-3 years ever since. I was hooked from the first conversation about the death of poor Snotboogie, and instantly loved Kima. I love how tired and lived-in and crumpled everything and everyone is. Can't wait to see your reactions going forward! And IDRIS! When this came out, he was completely unknown -- I didn't know he was British for YEARS! His accent is perfect. (Also: it was probably answered, but a "DOB" is "date of birth.")

Śéáń

This is a great excuse to revisit the series. I haven't watched it in 10 years.

Luetin

FUCK YES. I am here for this. This is gonna be the soundtrack to me working on miniatures late into the eve.

Starfire

2 minutes, 30 seconds in and I can tell Simone's in a good mood :)

Martin

Omar comin’

"A life. A life, Jimmy, you know what that is? It's the shit that happens while you're waiting for moments that never come."

This is a highly unique journey you guys are embarking on, one that changed my perspective on what was possible with TV storytelling. Rather than name some other shows to watch, I will leave you with an actual name, David Simon. He is largely responsible for The Wire, being the creator, show runner, head writer and executive producer. Everything he has done I have enjoyed.

JayF

Note from the DVD commentary - The story about Snot Boogey at the beginning is a true story.

Jay Davis

"What did I do?" ... to deserve a fresh reaction to one of my favorite T.V. series

David Guin

Dave drags out his boxed set of The Wire while giggling gleefully!

Zach Smith

YES THIS IS THE GREATEST TV SHOW OF ALL TIME

Tenn Seven

Yay! I signed up for The Expanse, but I'm staying for The Wire!

Haye Zeus

This show will make you think its one way, but it’s the other way

Martin

After Simone and George finish with The Wire, I would love for them to watch David Chase’s limited series, “We Own This City.” It’s really good.

TGrimace

You can absolutely rank intro themes. And Sopranos wins.

SavageDiplomat

The WIre is a brilliant crime drama. You should also check out The Shield. Equally brilliant show.

Marc Viloria

Im in. Rewatching this series with you guys

PIG

The Wire and then No Country For Old Men… I’m geeking out over here.

PIG

Does Cinebinge read the comments? It would be best if people in the future don’t try to color in expectations, like “Oh you’ll like this character over time” or “You’re gonna love the next episode”. Just let them make up their own minds.

Patrick Evans

I watched this for the first time in March. I turned it to kill some time before going out to see a movie and I did not make it to that movie because I just kept hitting next episode.

Thomas Yanez

Interesting. The tsunami of names, places and things happening that you don't know anything about yet is a good thing here, but a bad thing in "The Expanse". Whatever, I love this show. I love that other one, too, but if I had to pick one as a favorite, it'd definitely be this one.

MacGuffinStuff

I don't recall what got me interested in this show in the first place but I do remember I binged the first season in a couple of days, just could not stop watching it. I also remember being surprised when I found out Idris Elba was British lol, same with Dominic West. Tempted to say more about why I love this show so much but you'll see for yourselves.

redddfer44

HA! I knew it! I just knew Simone has to have had (does English work like this?) some acting training! I love this show. I remember being awestruck by Stringer Bell at least. Dude just exudes so much charisma and power even though he says so little. Oh yeah, and Lester Freamon making his Louis XIV armoire was incredibly fascinating. Seeing gay characters was also pretty damn rare back then. But now that I'm watching this, I'm realizing that I think this show made me a huge fan of naturalism in cinema. Environmental sound design and understated cinematography and lacks of gimmicks; lots of space for actors and the writing to breathe. Hope you all have a nice week! Can't wait for next Tuesday.

redddfer44

Oh, btw, the ranks: Police > Detective > Sergeant > Lieutenant > Captain (I'm not sure if there were any) > Major > Colonel > Deputy Commissioner > Commissioner. According to a reddit comment, the Commissioner is basically a political job and Deputy Commissioner of Operations Bureau (Deputy Ops) is the real power. In the real Baltimore PD, there are other Deputy Commissioners in charge of other departments, but every cop we've seen thus far is under Deputy Ops. Some glossary for things you asked about (most of which is from the book on the show; this is also from reddit but the whole thing is long and might containt _very_ slight spoilers) CI: Confidential Informant DEU: Drug Enforcement Unit DOB: Date of Birth ECU: Evidence Control Unit H-files: Homicide files IID: Internal Investigations Division Title III: Legal term for a federally sanctioned wiretap

PIG

I remember what got me interest in the show was Snoop being interviewed by Terry Gross on NPR. I was like “who is this person?!”

Persnickity

This is my first time watching this show. I am so annoyed I have to wait a week for more.

redddfer44

I agree. I hesitate to tell anyone when I'm watching a show because I hate it when people do this to me. (Then again, different strokes for different folks.)

Blacky

You're just starting to get a glimpse of the show, the breadth and the depth. It's not black and white, it's not good cops against bad dealers, it's "The Game". Everyone in it. Cops, junkies, dealers, civilians, and the whole city of Baltimore. All have good, all have bad, most are both in some ways. There's no 101 Creative Writing bullshit, like punish the bad guys, or make you feel good. In a way The Wire has more to do with a documentary, than it has to Hollywood. And it was, and still is, such a breath of fresh air for that reason. You talked about actors and the set dec, but as you saw a lot of the show is shot on location. And without spoiling anything, some of the actors aren't by trade or training; it was their first acting job. A fair amount of them are or were actual junkies or ex, ex dealers, or just civilians who lived in that environment. And the show was created by, irc, a ex detective who worked the projects, and a journalist. And yes, Omar is great. Your friends didn't lie to you Simone. A man must have a code. As is the writing. Very rough language, for sometimes very deep meaning. Like one of the best line of modern TV, about the war on drugs: - "You can't even call this shit a war" - "Why not?" - "War ends" I mean, I'm not from the US, but I've heard enough to know the politics and the PR and the toll around the "US gov war on drugs". And indeed, can't call it a war, this one does not end, and has no end, will never have one. As to answer Simone's question, a lot. Just from those two episodes, I remember being a little lost as you are, but starting seeing a lot of great things: - Stringer Bell exude charisma, poise. I think it was my first time with Idris Elda (I watched the show a few years after its release). And yes, the character pops out. - McNulty is also great, in an opposite way. If you think about it, you can see it at the end of episode two, the way he's still drunk, the way he look at his shield and smile. He's an empty boy, a cop in a system that does not give a shit, and he cares maybe not for the victims or even his ego of beating the opposition, but more as a forward runaway movement with his life because he's got nothing in it. You've seen his empty apartment. He's got nothing. And at the end of episode 2, he may have realized that his badge is a joke, like he was a joke falling off the cliff and failing at catching the kids. Which set up the next big narrative beat, but I won't spoil it. - Kima and Bunk are also great, each in their own way. They also have a lot of presence and charisma, but in a totally different style than Stringer. More approachable, more "I"ll like to buy them a beer and chat the shit" kind of thing. But the whole show is very understated in a way. There's no gimmick, no flashy camera work, it's just what's necessary for its goals. Even as to the writing, it's one of the most quotable and quoted show around, yet without context even the best quotes have little meaning. But with the context, they shine as a multi-faceted and very deep reflection of some part of the US social structure.

Jack Burton

I don't know who else does this the way you guys do but I love the schedule you guys keep, the editing is well done, the way you have Patreon-only shows like this is very fun and I just appreciate all the little things you guys do that ups the enjoyment factor for us on your reactions. Just good stuff. I haven't found a better reaction channel yet. You guys are the tippy top for me.

Blacky

While quite nice, they're not on the same league. The Shield is a much more traditional drama. Hard sure, lots of anti hero sure, but still a regular drama. I think The Wire is much, much more.

Stephen Woods

So glad you are doing this, the best programme of all time, better than the sopranos, better than game of thrones even better than battlestar galactica. If you enjoy this maybe consider doing Oz (another HBO show) in the future.

Ragnar Lothbrok

I started with this show too recently, and after two seasons i gotta say it deserves all the hype and more. The early HBO shows like this one, Oz or The Sopranos are something else. Enjoy !

Travis

As much as I love this show it definitely doesn’t carry the gravity it once did. When this came out there wasn’t other things like it on tv. Now there are so many shows of this caliber that I wouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t catch you the same way it did all of us 20 years ago. It’s definitely a slow burn but there are moments of great wisdom and reflection. Also, a very realistic depiction of Baltimore at the time and it’s only gotten worse.

Shannanr

Greatest show ever

Moonman

West Wing is an old school series that would really enjoy seeing you two react to if that is ever on the radar.

Pam Nail

I had a lot of the same responses you guys did when I first watched the show. All of the dialogue and names were overwhelming. Subtitles definitely helped, and as I was watching the DVDs, if an episode had a commentary, I would watch it a second time with the commentary on. There are very few characters that aren't genuinely great and well written -- even some of the characters I couldn't stand in the beginning. I would get so frustrated having to spend time watching them, but in the back of my mind I had a feeling the show had some cards hidden up its sleeve in terms of how to make me interested in them. And it almost always panned out exactly that way.

Agent Squirrels

You guys are going to love this show a lot if you're already loving it. It only gets better from here.

Joe Williams

I'm so pleased you're doing this! My favourite show hands down. It's like a novel. By the end, it almost felt like you could be dropped in Baltimore and you'd know how to get around.

Ana Fox

I love that you're watching The Wire so much! It must be a hard show to react to with all the information, but you two are certainly the duo to do it. I can't wait for more!

Byron

Wallace is a very young (and much skinnier) Michael B Jordan aka Killmonger from Black Panther. So that’s fun.

JayF

Just finished watching Ep2 with you. I can say that I work closely with the police from time to time because I'm an Animal Cruelty Investigator. I have no doubt that the substance abuse issues in the show are accurate because the creator of the show worked for a year alongside Baltimore homicide detectives as a journalist. I haven't witnessed it with the police I work with though. I have seen the political side of that job though and that is very accurate. The ranks explained straight from the show's wiki - The real life chain of command from the Commissioner downwards is Deputy Commissioner, Chief, Colonel, Lieutenant Colonel, Major, Captain, Lieutenant, Sergeant, and Detective/Officer. However, in the series, any mention of the ranks of Chief, Lieutenant Colonel, and Captain are omitted. Presumably this is to avoid confusion and make the relationships between different members of the hierarchy clearer to the viewer.

Travis

FYI——DOB = Date of Birth. That’s why Keisha rolled her eyes cause they had zero information to try and figure out who Avon was.

Antonio Maderias

DUDE!!!! I never post but this is my favorite show, im fuckin HYPED!!!

Fuzzy

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeit, about time.

Carlos Hurtado

its a bit overwhelming at first with the street and police lingo but you guys will get it. I knew nothing about this whole world but I got it after a bit. I learned so much. Some of that info was useless but I'd say most of it was important 🤣

Tom Smith

Not your Omar Simon he is still to come. :) Idris Elba's accent is great, but Dominic West does well with McNulty. If you like Idris Luther is worth a watch. Please also consider Sense8 at some point!

Fuzzy

https://i.imgur.com/xNc95Ne.jpg Here is a rather nifty Heirarchy infographic with many of the key players, It lists Carver as sgt but as of right now, he is a detective. Sorry it's rather moldy.

Green Nolan

so glad you are watching "the wire" my favorite show of all time (better than the sopranos, breaking bad, and game of thrones; my other tops) the first thing that is obvious about the show is that it's SUPER real. this was filmed in baltimore and created by a former detective and a former reporter for the baltimore sun. The slang and dialogue are authentic (subtitles are a must!) also there is no music in the wire save the opening and ending credits, all music is part of a scene (ie on a radio etc). this gives us (again) a very realistic feel. if you have good headphones you will often hear noises in the background (people yelling, cats, dogs, doors opening and closing) all adding to the ambience. there are a LOT of high level things going on in the show that is just beneath the surface. A: the first scene of every season encapsulates the entire season: for instance the scene with "snot boogie" mcNulty asks "if he steals every time, why do you let him play?" the response is: "it's america man" symbolically referring to the drug trade in baltimore we know that the drug dealers (snot boogie) are committing a crime, but "it's america man" so we have to let the justice system play out. B: the greyness of characters. there are characters in the wire you may hate right now that you will end up loving, there are characters that you love right now that you will end up hating. C: McNultty is an outlier in the police (he doesn't like the system, wants to do what is right) D'Angelo is an outlier in the crew (he doesn't like the system, wants to do what is right) D: lastly, i thought you missed a VERY obvious juxtaposition: Bunk shot a mouse (two bullets) that was threatening his wife's state of mind and stated: "thought about leaving it there as a warning to the other mice..." end of the episode: the witness is shot (two bullets) to releave Avon barksdale's state of mind and send a message to other witnessess. love you both, i'm excited for you to experience one of the greatest shows of all time!

Green Nolan

also "bubs" is short for "bubbles" (he got that nickname because of the bubbles he makes with his spit when he is high on heroin) those bubbles had a purpose!!! lol

Christopher Feiertag

Let’s state the obvious: “The Wire” is “The Godfather Part I+II” of TV shows.

Haye Zeus

Hard disagree. Haven’t seen a show since that has the same caliber or impact and gives the same chills till this day. Nothing has come close not even stuff like Breaking Bad.

Peter Register

Reactions to shows like this kinda drive me nuts. Its been years since I've watched this. Now I gotta wait a week to watch 3 & 4? Argh!

Ashley Faith

Noooo, does this mean Korras not even a possibility till you're done with the entire series? Le sigh

Mitchell Bowker

They watch shows a season at a time. I think they said they're watching The Expanse Season 2 after The Wire Season 1, then they'll do another poll to determine the next show to watch. There is still hope!

PIG

Which Season was that level of "Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeit"?

CluckingBell

Really looking forward to the next few episodes. Not for anything specific, but just because, on my first watch, somewhere between episodes 2 and 4 was where I went from "This is a decent show" to full-on muting my phone and making a big bowl of popcorn to binge "The Wire" uninterrupted.

PIG

I remember the very moment The Wire felt like it was different from anything else. Unfortunately I can’t say where for now.

Starromania72

The movie McNulty quotes, The Bridge on the River Kwai, is a classic WW2 movie starring Alec Guinness, and based on a book by French novelist Pierre Boulle. Incidentally, Boulle also wrote another book which inspired an even greater chunk of cinematic history, La planète des singes (Planet of the Apes).

I recently thought about your question, Simone, about my first time watching "The Wire". It was many, many years ago. At least 10-15, I would say. I previously saw "The Sopranos" in it´s entirety, so I already knew, what HBO was capable of achieving. Admittedly, at first I wondered, what of a slow burner this show is. But after watching a couple of episodes, I got it. Suddenly it all made sense: the slow pace, the complexity (and the missing help to navigate through all the characters, locations, relationships, connections, etc.). "THe Wire" is the one show, that is the most rewarding, when you put the effort in to keep up with all the information, that is thrown at you. And I promise you, when you´re done, you will never look at other movies /TV shows again the same way. There is a time before seeing "The Wire" for the first time and a time after seeing "The Wire" for the first time. Best regards from Germany!

UsedFishing

"Green" is new, they become "brown" cause thats the colour of heroin

Christopher Feiertag

Am I the only one here that does not think, that there won’t be any viewers that will not like “The Wire” and that it would be a great idea to watch all 5 seasons consecutively?

Generators

you can literally see the view numbers on YT, they have over 3000 patrons. so 10% of patrons watched this. which means the other 90% are waiting for something else. it would be extremely unfair and unwise as a business decision to make the majority wait half a year before a new show.

Jeff K

Just popped on because I was curious what was coming up for you guys, saw The Wire as a Patreon exclusive, and never clicked "subscribe" faster to anything in my life. Greatest TV show in history.

David Dotting

Saw The Wire and haven't re-upped a sub faster in my life. Looking forward to it!

james repka

Just finished watching you react to Tropic Thunder on YouTube. George mentioned in passing that you were reacting to The Wire on Patreon and I came over here as fast as I could. Looking forward to it!

John

I'm here for the wire

Tyler Woodcock

Don't mix it up, this is the greatest show ever made. Watch it straight all the way straight through. Each season is different enough to justify it.

Onno Smits

Fucking hell, looks like HBO Max in EU changed the framerate and sped up the footage, so it doesn't sync with your copies. Who knew we'd still be screwed by PAL/NTSC in today's day and age? 🤦‍♂️ Guess I'll pirate a normal copy and watch along with you that way.

Jay

Been watching your YT vids for a while but had to sign up for The Wire. As far as I'm concerned, no other show comes close. It's engrossing, it's tough, it's fucking heartbreaking and it's laugh out loud funny on occasion. This and The Sopranos always seem to be in competition for the title of "best show ever". I love The Sopranos but I view it as almost trivial next to this masterpiece. To quote Charlie Brooker, it's an important, angry work of art. Looking forward to watching along with yous:)

Justin Hearst

One of the many beautiful things about this show is that there's a LOT of foreshadowing in this series, based on quotes.

Aaron M

I love this show, but sometimes it gets a little TOO real. You will see as it goes on, but it is so good that it doesn't feel like fiction anymore. It's hard for me to watch sometimes. Especially in 2022, to see that 20 years have passed but things in the world aren't different at all.
