Pirates of The Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl - Patreon Version

I honestly have a bigger crush on Geoffrey Rush than on Johnny Depp, but I've always been weird, so... I love the movies, and -- interesting trivia note -- the theme was actually composed by Hans Zimmer, but he couldn't work on it since he was working on another score, so he played the melody for Klaus Badelt (who works under him at his film scoring studio collective) and Badelt went off and worked it up. It's wonderful but it is interesting -- it is very evocative of the battle theme early in "Gladiator" (and very Zimmer). The only plothole that bugs me is why are all the pirates freaking when Elizabeth is going to drop the medallion overboard? They're cursed. As we learn later, they could have just jumped right down and picked it back up. It's also a little irritating to me that Elizabeth recommends clubhauling (using the anchor to make a fast turn) and the crew acts like they've never heard of it before when it is a pretty well-known maneuver and not one she just invented. George, loading the cannon with odds and ends is very similar to loading them with "grape" -- chains, nails, all sorts of deadly objects. It was very common in battle and horribly effective. There were just as many deaths from shrapnel and grape as from straight-on cannon fire. The "Master and Commander" sea battles and maneuvers were much more realistic, but this was still a lot of fun. The one thing that bothers me is the whole "a pirate can be a good man" thing. If a pirate sailed under the skull and crossbones, they were broadcasting "no quarter" and that they were death to whoever crossed their path. There were a very few "good" pirates, arguably, but not many.

As someone who also loves Geoffrey Rush, have you seen Quills (2000)? A grotesque and beautiful film that sadly will have little chance of getting a reaction on youtube, but has powerhouse performances not only by Geoffrey Rush, but also by Joaquin Phoenix, Kate Winslet and Michael Caine.

AC10

OH MY GOD! Jack Sparrow! I was literally crawling in bed when this dropped. Youtube edit for now... full length in the morning. (Dang human form.. why do we require sleep..)

Jim Frykman

So happy you guys picked up on the Princess Bride homages

Josh B.

Please do the whole trilogy they are amazing

Alissa

Hyyype overload!!

gobmob2000

You two have to watch Master and Commander: The Far side of the world now. It came out the same year as pirates of the caribbean and is basically a realistic version of the same film but from the other perspective, a British Royal Navy ship chasing a french privateer (basically a state sanctioned pirate) during the Napoleonic wars. It stars Russel Crow and is a fantastic film, it gives you a real sense of what it was like to be on one of those ships during that time period. The books (same name by Patrick O'Brian), the film is based upon is also really good and well worth a read.

redddfer44

Also, according to a Youtube video where a naval warfare expert rates ship-to-ship combat scenes in movies, the most accurate and realistic depiction of naval warfare in any movie. I'm not sure he found anything to criticize. I'm not a big franchise guy and rarely hope for sequels, but I was really bummed that none were ever made for Master & Commander.

Jim Frykman

You guys both mentioned Sea of Thieves but what you really want to check out is The Return of the Obra Dinn

Justin Feldman

"Did they ever explain what that compass was?" =)

Magnificent Gojira

All films bu Gore Verbinski are def worth a watch (that's a first three movies). And agree on Master and Commander. Aside from it's being crazy accurate sometimes, it's simply great movie

JayF

Simone level set to 200% for this intro. Is there a PO box where we can send her coffee or something? ;)

Young Blood Priest

This was fun. Watching you two laugh is much better than seeing you cry.

Elvenwitch

I am going to use the line "Maybe piracy is the friends we made along the way."

Carlos Hurtado

The set designs, makeup and costumes were done really well. hope to see you two check out the other movies.

Odd Thomas

Best stop there, the sequels progressively get worse. And the best pirate film will always be Cutthroat Island.

Justin Wolford

They were made with a trilogy in mind. You guys should atleast do the trilogy. All the same characters and storyline and the third one is the best one. The forth and fifth do get progressively worse but in my opinion are still good. Seriously tho just let me know whatvi got to do to get youbguys to finish the trilogy and soon. I need follow up reactions like you did with kill bill, lol.

Mrbluegrand

1, 2 and 3 are a trilogy as they follow the same "chapter" of the story and in the third one rounds of then they made the 4th one and went downhill from there in my opinion but please watch the 2 and 3 one to complete the trilogy! =)

Texas Anla'Shok

You’re not the only one to compare this to “The Princess Bride”. I think this works for much the same reason that does. “The Princess Bride” seems like an epic fantasy adventure, but it’s really more like an affectionate parody of one. Same with “Pirates”, it’s more like a parody of swashbuckling pirate adventures. We are introduced to Jack heroically posed atop the mast…which turns out to be on a tiny dinghy. And then it does it again when he sails proudly into port…on his basically sunken boat and steps gamely onto the dock (my mom said she HAD to have this movie after seeing that). And through the rest the action is rather silly and cartoonish…but it works!

samuel Jakob

Very fun reaction, I love this movie so much! You have to also watch 2 and 3 they are really really good aswell and for sure worth a watch. thanks for this, made my evening! Also its funny that Simone watched it before yet its George that explains some stuff to her, please dont wait to long before you react to the other 2 so u dont forget everything, and also i dont wanna wait that long. :D 4,5 arent that good, u can watch them but for me its a trilogy that ends after the 3th.

Middy

Just echoing everybody else in that 2 & 3 are very much worth watching. 4 and 5 are "watchable" if you love the franchise, but the step down in quality is pretty apparent. Also, if George was impressed by the costuming in this movie then 2 & 3 will blow his mind; costumes, sets and special effects are all dialled up to 11.

proq

Btw. this movie has a short post credit scene.

Ayna

Love these movies. The first one is obviously best, but I also really enjoy 2-4. The fifth I never made it through <_<

MIDO

Pleeeeeeease watch the next 2 movies at least.

Andrew T

I feel like the next Keira Knightly movie you react to should open with, "hey everybody and welcome to 'hey, Cable!'"

Kyle Urbach

George's mug is awesome. Fuck Moash forever.

Tim T—

You missed a post credit scene. Not a relevant one for the next movies, but hey, completionism. Also: You should watch Master & Commander.

Greymond

The next 2 are a must watch. While they are a bit weaker than the first and get a little silly at times, they're still great and the overall story is phenomenal. The 4th is still pretty decent in my opinion, but the 5th is definitely where it goes down the toilet.

AC10

Is the camera playing tricks on my eyes or is Simone's coffee cup as big as her head? Is she drinking a whole pot of coffee this reaction? Dang girl give dark roast a try... As everyone already said the 1st 3 movies are gold. 4 and 5 I enjoyed but not worth your precious time for reactions. The Hunger Games Catching Fire is another sequel worth your time. My favorite of the series.

Steve Mercier

Turns to crap pretty quickly. The second one is...well...it's there. It has a moment or two. And then...crap.

DM DC

I agree, 2 and 3 are definately worth watching. I would recommend going back to watch the post credit scene of this movie, and then also make sure to watch the post credit scenes of the next 2. The 4th and 5th movies are fun, but it is dialed down in terms of the epicness. But still fun if you really enjoyed all the characters of this film.

JayF

So I grew up in Florida and made many trips to Disney World in my youth. I can't speak for Disney Land but Disney World had a PotC ride. No it was not just a ship. You were in a small boat that floated through an indoor ride that was a bunch of scenes of pirates doing pirate things. A couple of things straight from that ride that made it into the movie are the pirates in the jail cell trying to get the dog with the key to come closer to them and the parrot saying, "Dead men tell no tales". The latter being just before your boat on the ride took a steep plunge down a slide. Though, if memory serves, it was a skull and crossbones saying it on the ride. Oh and the, "Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me" song was from the ride as well.

Kevin Bartelen

The compass as implied by this movie, seems like it points instead to that island with the cursed treasure. A later movie does explain it differently but that's how I understood it from watching this one.

Kathy Ice

I visited the one in Disneyland many times and can confirm. Snippets of dialog were from the ride also ("Strike yer colors, ye bloomin' cockroaches!") And a lot of the scenes in Tortuga were vignettes from the ride. They've since changed the ride to bring it in line with the movies, and while I understand why they did that, it makes it harder for new viewers to appreciate the cleverness of this first adaptation.

Rileymetal

Watch the first three and then bail on it ... treat it like a Trilogy.

MacGuffinStuff

Okay I'm just gonna say one thing, but before I say that I'm gonna say, these movies are a lot of fun!! Oh, and yeah there are actually a lot of references in the movie to the ride at Disneyland, the dog with the key and the drunk sleeping with pigs are two direct ones. Oh yeah the one thing I came to say, I think Johnny Depp's pirate character and really all of his work since Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas is at least a little influenced by Hunter S. Thompson. (And Keith Richards as far as Jack Sparrow of course). Depp played Thompson in Fear and Loathing (directed by Terry Gilliam btw, the animator in Monty Python), and when he found out he got the role, he spoke with Bill Murray, who played Thompson in Where The Buffalo Roam. Murray warned Depp that if he got too into being Hunter he'd never get him out of his blood, and he was kind of right.

Joel the Human

I would do the first 3 movies, all done by the same director. So people think they are bad, but those people just don't like fun.

Texas Anla'Shok

You had some questions about why sailors are so superstitious and the reason is that sailors, especially in the Age of Sail and prior, were TERRIFIED of the sea. It's wide, it's vast, there's the very real possibility of drifting out to sea and never being seen again, storms can cause waves that swallow ships whole and there's no telling what's actually under the sea, hence all those stories of sea monsters. It's no coincidence that the sea gods of various mythologies are fickle and temperamental, and ancient mariners would perform various sacrifices and rituals at the beginning and end of voyages to appease them, as Drachinifel put it once, "Please don't kill me," and "Thank you for not killing me." As the pagan religions gave way to Christianity, the sacrifices to sea deities were done away with but aspects of those rituals stuck around eventually becoming the maritime superstitions as we know them now.

Jesus F Christ

Is it just me or can anyone find a copy of this with the same runtime George said of 2:13:39? Disney+ has it at 2:25. Blu-Ray versions have it at 2:23.

Greymond

Those are both the right version. Pretty sure there is only one. I'm assuming the copy they're watching just doesn't have the credits, which start around the 2:13 mark.

Logan Kerlee

Very happy that you two began watching this! I watched each of the movies in theaters and they all were AWESOME!! Holy crap, it was exciting. Loads of laughs and good times as well. :) The next one isn't as cool as this one but it's still a lot of fun. :)

Harriet Loughnan

As long as you can forget that it's Johnny Depp, this is a really fun movie. I haven't been able to watch a movie of his since all the stuff came out, although to be fair this is the only movie of his I am sad about not watching.

Wrencher86

Another Gore Verbinski film that should be at the top of the list is Rango. Also "Starring" Depp.

AC10

Johnny Depp is not a character in this movie. I know they look similar... but his name is Captain Jack Sparrow.

Cincassette

The first 3 Pirates movies are great in my opinion. It sorta falls off after that.

E.P.B.F.

Not quite. It's a magical artifact that always points towards the location of whatever the holder's heart desires most in the world, be it a place, an object, or a person. In Jack's case what he longed for most was to get his lost ship back so the compass needle would point in the direction where the Black Pearl was. After he became captain of the Pearl again at the end that desire was satisfied and the compass would track a new target, to wit where Jacks next greatest desire could be found. That was why he checked the compass and set the course after reading it.

Jayson Phillips

Can we start a D and D group online? I have been a DM for years and i can put you and others thru a campaign that is awesome!

Lucifer Moon

Funny story Disney thought the jack sparrow character was too gay in the first movie and asked Depp to act more straight in the sequels but Depp said 'all his characters are either gay or bisexual and so they had to just deal with it.' LOL. Depp really is amazing.

Lucifer Moon

sailors are the most superstitious due to the effects of loneliness at sea but also because they traveled more and saw more of the world than anyone else in their time and thus were exposed to more belief systems and folklore than any others.

Lucifer Moon

This movie has the most powerful forbidden love of all time; Barbossa x Apples.

Lucifer Moon

The area where I live activily celebrates Talk Like a Pirate day.

Lucifer Moon

I also run games and I love D&D, more specifically I love pretty much anything to do with Ravenloft.

Lucifer Moon

They turn to crap after part 3 but 1 - 3 are amazing
