The Wire: Season 1 - Episode 13 - Patreon Version

Comments

Chris

God, I hope you do season 2 straight away. It, in my opinion, is the pinnicle of TV writing. Others will say season 4 but 2 is just so complex and interwoven. It's genius.

I want more... lets go straight to season 2... just this once lol... for others in the chat, many consider Season 2 to be the weakest season of the Wire, thoughts?... I think 3 is my favourite from memory P.S i know they're patreon exclusives but i think you'd garner a reasonable audience from releasing edited down versions on Youtube

Excited for The Expanse season 2 because it's new to me, but man I can't wait for you to get to the next season of The Wire, not trying to spoil anything but it's not what you're expecting, this show has a scope unlike any other I've seen apart from maybe Breaking Bad, but it's even more realistic, gets the minutia, it's all in the details, love it.

Elvenwitch

Please go back to the Expanse.

John Richards

The Wire has some of the smartest writing ever seen on the small screen. Along with the quiet heart break, amazing dialog and flawed humanity on display, there is an underlying theme to this season. Throughout the season, there are scenes on both sides of the law that mirror each other showing the extent that the police and the drug gangs have evolved to parallel, and in some ways very similar, entities. Often these mirrored scenes may not be readily apparent, since they often occur episodes apart. This starts in the first episode with Rawls/Avon using identical dialog to tell McNulty/D'Angelo to put their ass in the chair. It continues with the Pit boys/Police beating Johnny/Bodie, the hospitalized Johnny/Kima begging Bubbles/McNulty for info on the street/case. Avon is determined to send a message by putting a body on the hood of a car, Rawls is determined to send a message by putting dope on the table for the cameras. After Kima is shot, both sides say it was not worth it (but from very different perspectives). In the end, D'Angelo is sentenced to 20 years, but given all these parallels it might be reasonable to expect him to get parole in 13 years... and 4 months.

Season 2 is much better than people give it credit for; it was just such a shift from what people were expecting. Time has been kind to it, and people are recognizing these days just how excellent it was, it seems. All five seasons are great, though season 5 was the one we can probably all agree was a step down. Of course, the worst season of The Wire is still better than 99% of all TV ever made.

John Richards

I'm not going into any details on the following seasons, but the way the show was described in reviews changed quite a bit as the show went on. Many reviewers labled the show a "police procedural" when it debuted, dumping it in the same box as shows like CSI, Law and Order, etc. Of course, that was ridiculus. While The Wire was never anti-cop, as some accused it of being, it was most definitely "anti cop-show". The second season surprised many fans, as it marked the show's expansion beyond the drug war in west Baltimore. Instead of being compared to CSI, by the 4th season at least one reviewer was describing The Wire as a genius level, dramatic version of Sim City. Each season adds a layer onto the foundation set in the previous seasons. I once read that there are more than 200 reoccurring speaking roles over the 5 seasons - there are characters that appear for a single episode a season over multiple seasons that have notable character arcs.

Given the stance in funeral homes, I’m rooting for a Six Feet Under watch

Chris

So are we not doing season 2 straight away then ?

Andrew Smith

Thats not how they do tv series. Initially I didn't like how they do different shows first seasons. However I can see the logic behind it now. If they were to commit to a full show they would undoubtedly see lower viewership over time. By switching things around they can please a greater number of patrons.

redddfer44

Something big coming up? Shit, not enough subscribers on YT so George is finally open up an OF...? Jk, I'm excited! I love this last episode. The hopeful beginning sets up a downfall, and because it's tv, you kinda expect a bang, a dramatic hammer to fall. But no: it's just several things coming together from both sides of the law.

George Smith

Thanks so much for starting your Wire journey! I have commented before that I absolutely respect your following your patrons wishes and watching another show but I cant wait till you guys start season two of The Wire!

Tenn Seven

Great reaction, as always! Looking forward to watching you guys react to The Expanse again (which gets better and better with every season), and going back to The Wire after that! You have a lot of good television ahead of you!

Fuzzy

Glad you guys enjoyed this, excited to rewatch The Expanse again with you too. I hope the big surprise is just... you uploading seasons 2, 3, 4, and 5 of The Wire in one day heh.

Jeff K

With McNulty being on the boat: it doesn't matter what he told Rawls, because he had already told Landsman about not wanting to be in the marine unit.

Kim-Christian Nielsen

When you start The Expanse again you gotta explain why season 1 didn't work for you, George.

Tenn Seven

Honestly season 1 didn't work a ton for me on the first watch either, though that may have been a byproduct of being a huge fan of the books and the show (understandably) not being able to incorporate all of the cool book ideas. I think almost all shows (perhaps The Wire is an exception) go through an initial period where the actors and characters don't quite mesh up in their roles and with each other, and I feel like The Expanse's season 1 suffers from that throughout most of episodes. I kept watching though since I love the books so much, and I was really glad I did. I think in season 2 the characters really start working much better together, and the show just kept getting more and more amazing with every new season.

McNulty to Stringer Bell, after the case against D'Angelo falls apart in Episode 1: "Nicely done." Stringer to McNulty, as he walks out of the courtroom in Epsiode 13: "Nicely done." McNulty to anyone in earshot, during any episode: "What the fuck did I do?" Landsman asked McNulty where he DIDN'T want to go in Episode 1, and McNulty told him the boat. It's not until Lester is telling him the story of how he ended up in the Pawnshop Unit (E4 or 5) that he warns McNulty not to be honest when asked that question. The 20 years D'Angelo gets for his part in the organization is his sentence -- it is the plea bargain deal he and Maurice Levy agree to when he refuses to cooperate with the Police and States' Attorney. Barring the judge making an unusual decision not to sign on to the plea bargain, D'Angelo has agreed to a 20-year sentence.

I signed up for your Patreon minutes after I learned you were doing this show. I've watched The Wire all the way through a half-dozen times, and watching it this way with the two of you is second only to watching it for the first time. I cannot wait until you get to Season 2. The writers have laid the foundation for the story they want to tell, and each season adds a new layer to this story of what is befalling America's cities in the late 20th and 21st centuries. I've never watched The Expanse, though it has been recommended to me. I'll be reviewing season 1 with you next, and get caught up with you when you're into season 2.

Thomas Flight on Youtube has a series of video essays about The Wire, that are well worth watching. It starts with Why The Wire is one of the Most Brilliant TV Shows Ever (no spoiler) from April 2019. Even as someone who has watched the show multiple times, I still discovered several things in it.

Brian Harris

If all you guys did for the next five months was The Wire, I’d be cool with that. The only show that comes close is The Sopranos. For me, they’re neck and neck. Lots of people rag on Season 2, and I’ll admit it’s probably the second-weakest season for me, but it’s still MILES ahead of almost anything else that’s ever been on TV. It’s going to take some getting used to because the rhythm kind of changes. I think that’s why a lot of people don’t like it. Thematically, it’s sort of the odd man out in all five seasons.

Chris

Plot wise though it's vital to knowing how the bigger drug supply picture works. From its supply to reasons why Baltimore is crumbling and opportunity beyond "the game" is rare. In my eyes as well as being an incredible, complex, engaging and interwoven story it shows you more of Baltimore. And Baltimore is the main character of the show. Plus the early scenes with McNulty are some of my favourites in the entire series.

Grand Moff Slackin'

This was a fun rewatch with y’all! Looking forward to more seasons. Also excited you’re jumping back into The Expanse. I truly hope you enjoy season 2.

John Richards

My most fervent hope at this point is that season 2 of the Expanse consists of 3 or 4 episodes... Something that comes up in the Wire several times is a proffer session. If the prosecutor is going to offer immunity or a plea bargain based on future testimony, they need to know what you will testify to. That's what D'Angleo was in when he was giving up everything he knew. Any info gained in a proffer cannot be used in court, it's not yet testimony.

Justin Newberry

Y’all won’t be able to stop with this series and you shouldn’t. It’s amazing.

Chris

Getting in novelists like George Pelecanos, Richard Price and Dennis Lehane helped make the writing on this show the greatest of all time
