It’s not the same house as the first movie but it is the same neighborhood. It’s fighter town USA which is a neighborhood in San Diego. All the houses look like that because they’re mostly old military housing. It’s a cool place to drive around.

McShades

The house in the first movie was in Oceanside, not too far from the pier. The owners used to rent it out for big bucks back in the day. I remember driving by the area once many years ago and it had signs on it saying it was the house from Top Gun, sadly a condo developer bought the land, and the house was moved somewhere else. In person that house was so small, Maybe like 800 sq.ft. But it was right across from the ocean. Sadly Val Kilmer got throat cancer and lost most of his ability to talk. But one of Tom Cruises conditions to come back was that Val Kilmer had to be in the movie also. So they hired some guys who use AI voice software to help Val Kilmer speak his lines.

This scene between Maverick and Iceman is extremely hard to watch just weeks after the death of Val Kilmer. I also think it’s funny that Lewis Pullman’s name is Bob in the movie because that’s also his name in The New Avengers - I mean Thunderbolts*. Another great movie with Pullman is 2018’s Bad Times at the El Royale. It has a stacked cast: Chris Hemsworth, Jon Hamm, Dakota Johnson, Cynthia Erivo, Jeff Bridges and Nick Offerman. It’s from director Drew Goddard. He also directed The Cabin in the Woods but is mostly known for his writing, having written movies like Cloverfield, World War Z and The Martian and TV shows Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel, Alias, Lost, Daredevil, and The Good Place and The Defenders.

Sure, I can watch this for the 4th time. Let’s go.

Dang, love this movie but was so hoping for Baby Driver as I’m sure you guy said it was in this weeks schedule. But hey ho this is still a great film.

OH MY GOD

I only saw both of the Top Gun movies this year and I think I prefer the first one. I'd give them the same rating (8/10), but the original was so quintessentially 80s with its soundtrack, colour grading and script that it had me feeling nostalgic for a time and place I wasn't even around for. Maverick is a fantastic sequel (especially considering the 30+ year wait), but it trades a warm and fuzzy aesthetic for a sharp, high resolution one which can't really be described as quintessentially anything.

To answer your early question George, I believe each Mach is the speed of sound. So Mach ten is ten times the speed of sound (7,676 miles per hour?). Someone please correct me if wrong.

Elvenwitch

Mach is a measurement of speed, while G's is a measurement of pressure affected by changes in velocity. Mach 1 is based on the speed of sound, which is variable depending on atmospheric conditions, which also means that altitude also affects the exact number of kph required to break the sound barrier. I can also say that as someone that used to work on fighter jets, G's can ruin a mechanics weekend. Several times my pilot brought mine back with the over g indicator flipped, and the following week was spent verifying that nothing important was damaged by "Notso" (pilot's call sign) trying to be Maverick.

Penny Benjamin is mentioned by Goose as one of the Admiral's daughter that Maverick got caught banging. It's a quick whisper to Maverick as they're getting reamed by the principal from Hill Valley High School. Sneeze and you would miss it. They made her a character for this one.

Odd Thomas

It's a great movie and so uplifting; something we don't have enough of in cinema these days. We've become cynical and happy endings are looked down on as naive or 'uncool', but done right, like this film, and you've got a billion dollar movie.

Generators

considering the movies sound track im guessing George is having one hell of a time trying to get pass copyright.

Travis

Hell yea!!

Grand Moff Slackin'

Mach 5 is the car from Speedracer. So Mach 10 is two cars.

Michael_AP

Ahhh good memory 👍 I was thinking: naaa she's not in the first one, but now it comes back to me: Mag Ryan mentioning something about Goose telling her how Maverick "went ballistic with Penny Benjamin".

Ian Forbes

Penny’s house is not the same one from the first film though it is reminiscent. Charlie’s house is now apparently a pie shop. Also, from some internet searching, McGillis said she was not asked to return and cited her age/appearance. I had heard rumors years ago she and Cruise didn’t get along on the first film so I wouldn’t be surprised that had something to do with it too … but the internet being the internet, I wouldn’t say these things with 100% certainty since I don’t know it first hand.

Odd Thomas

The Bob thing I think is a call-back to Oblivion, which Kosinski and Cruise made together. It's a great movie, I highly recommend it!

Monica Alarcon

Oh nice!, I was wondering why you didn't react to newer movies anymore. I've been expecting this one and Thor Love and Thunder for a while...

JayF

My mom and I used to watch Gilmore Girls together. Great rapid clever dialogue in that show.

Erwin Quiachon

I remember that Cruise and McGillis did date after making Top Gun. I also remember that it didn't end well. Of course, nobody is going to bring this up around Tom Cruise. McGillis would have been better than Jennifer Connelly because she has endured some serious alcoholism and drug addiction since. That story would have fit perfectly for a lot of military families.

Hangman was not a villain and he redeemed himself. He learned to be a teamplayer, which was his only weakness. He was like Maverick in the first movie. He may be arrogant, but he was right about his criticism of Rooster. Besides that you could see his progress during the second part of the training. When they simulated the bombing of the target. They flew in formation and Hangman stayed in line, not doing some extra stuff and putting his teammates in danger. And when Cyclone told them that Maverick was no longer their instructor, Hangman wasn't sitting alone anymore like at the beginning. It showed that he finally integrated into the team. When Maverick picked Rooster, he accepted it and thought about his behaviour. He finally acted like a teamplayer and encouraged Rooster by saying "You give them hell.". And when Maverick got shot down, he wanted to support the rest of the pilots so they could make it back to the carrier safely. For me Hangman is the best character in the movie. He is not just the best pilot out of all the young ones, he has also the best character development and he could be the next Maverick.

Erwin Quiachon

Everyone should pick a call sign for themselves, like the pilots in the movie. I choose "Meat Wagon". If I can't be Meat Wagon, I want to be "Cup Cake".

Jayson Phillips

NGL I died laughing when you said sploosh!

Young Blood Priest

Loved watching this for a second time. Another good Ed Harris movie is The Abyss. Unfortunately it’s not available to stream here in the states. ☹️

Penny Benjamin was mentioned at the beginning of the 1st movie by Goose when they are getting chewed out. Also Warlock was in the 1st one with Mav

As an aside, there has been at least one incident in history where a fighter pilot escaped from enemy territory in a enemy aircraft. Bob Hoover was an American fighter pilot who was shot down by the Germans in World War 2, was taken prisoner and after some good luck, skill and help from others, was able to break out of a prison camp and commandeer an enemy fighter plane and escape to Holland. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vW_yqpxbGic

No idea who Jennifer Connely is? Now we need to make him watch "Labyrinth".

Chris Gronau

You are correct in that Mach number is the ratio of your speed to the speed of sound in the air you are currently in (so Mach 10 is indeed 10 times the speed of sound). However, since the speed of sound varies depending on things like altitude and air temperature, the exact speed Maverick was flying isn't really determinable.

The only disappointment in this reaction is the ending where George seems to have missed the very powerful statement on PTSD made with the last sequence and the Lady Gaga theme song. I've watched that last sequence with military families in the theatre and at home and their reaction was the complete opposite of George. Despite the happy ending, they all start crying heavily at that ending as they listen to the lyrics of that song. That closing scene and the lyrics of that song have become an anthem about PTSD, especially for military families with the loss and anxiety they have suffered over the last 30 years. Despite the flaws of this film, it has been incredible to watch it become an epic love letter and anthem for military families. "I see that you're hurtin', why'd you take so long To tell me you need me? I see that you're bleeding You don't need to show me again But if you decide to, I'll ride in this life with you I won't let go 'til the end.." P.S.: I would encourage anyone who hasn't already done it to try rewatching that last sequence from the moment Maverick thanks Rooster for saving his life through the credits and listen to that Lady Gaga song from the perspective of a military family who has experienced the anxiety and/or loss of trying to complete a mission and bring everyone home safely. It's the most unique and iconic element of this film.

Erwin Quiachon

I'm not convinced that Hangman was the best pilot in the class. Both of his kills were sucker punches against one pilot in and inferior aircraft and another pilot that didn't seem to be aware that he was around. Maverick could kill his instructors in dogfights when he was young. Maverick was a better pilot than Hangman when he was young.

Logan Kerlee

I really enjoyed this reaction. It was my first time watching this movie and it was cool watching it alongside you both for the first time, as well. Normally I've already watched everything multiple times but this one slipped by me. Either that or I felt that there's no way it could hold up with the first. I definitely enjoyed the first one more. Years from now when I'm bored on a weekend I'll go ahead and put the original on instead of this one. This was not a bad movie. It just doesn't have the same impact that the original does with me. A lot of that is simply because I first watched the original when I was a youngster. It's hard to top my childhood movies! xD Nothing will ever come out on top over The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Just won't happen. ANOTHER 90's movie that I am dying for a reaction for would be The Crow. Holy shit - that movie's amazing. It's impactful, dramatic, violent and leaves a mark. If I were to request a movie out of anything - that would be it.

Joits

Great reaction! I've been waiting for this one from you guys. I've seen the movie 3 times and I still get choked up during the Iceman scenes.

Schism

Just when I had given up on American entertainment being able to produce anything inspiring, we get Arcane and Maverick in the space of a few months. Maybe they're learning the lesson that story, love of craft, and respect for the audience matters.

Erwin Quiachon

I've been reading that military suicides for the U.S. spiked up 35% over the last 20 years. So, if you see someone starting to cry at the ending sequence of Maverick, you probably shouldn't be laughing at them. The more I watch it, I understand how it could be a trigger for a lot of people. I'm starting to think that there is probably an early draft of this screenplay where Maverick admits to being suicidal. It's may be enough to indicate that he keeps pushing his luck.

Erwin Quiachon

Somebody just pointed out to me that since 2001 7,000 Americans in the military have been killed in combat while 30,000 have died by suicide. That's why Maverick is a movie about PTSD. PTSD has killed more people in the U.S. Military than any nation or terrorist organization since 2001. The dedication at the end to Tony Scott, who wasn't in the military but he also died from suicide, emphasized the coda of the song being played. The survivor's remorse by Maverick over Goose was used very effectively in keeping PTSD in focus. Both Top Gun movies are used to recruit people into the U.S. Military. The U.S. Department of Defense had final say in how they were portrayed in both movies. It's worth noticing that the first movie was used to assure the American public during peace that the U.S. Military would be dominant in war. The second movie is used to recruit people by promoting the military community, which is their primary weapon for defeating PTSD.

I wish they would write Penny in better. You kind of need to read about it before watching as most people won't remember that line about him doing fly by's with admiral's daughter :) But Jennifer Connelly was perfect in this one. Also, Val Kilmer couldn't talk at all, so they digitally constructed his lines from fragments of his speech from other movies.
