When Cameron was in Egypt's land... let my Cameron go...

Angela D. Mitchell

I've definitely always looked at the entire point of the story as Ferris trying to give his best friend Cameron a gift before they have to part ways at graduation. And I love that it is a truly beautiful, cool day that they fill with art and culture and fun and sightseeing -- honestly, Ferris Bueller's day off is way more educational for those three kids than anything they would have gotten sitting in class. And I think Ferris proves his friendship by trying to save Cameron from his father's anger and asking Cameron to let him (Ferris) take the heat for the car -- that's a true friend right there. It is funny that Jeannie did end up getting SOME revenge on Ferris -- his parents were going to buy him a car if his mother's real estate deal came through that day, but because Jeannie went to the police station, her mother lost the deal (so no new car for Ferris). Thirty plus years after I first saw it, Cameron is the character who stays with me. Alan Ruck was just amazing in the role.

I was having a really bad day but this reaction really hit the spot. Such a great film! I am glad you guys really liked it.

John Hughes films are all very 80s. People from my generation generally love all of his stuff. If you decide to explore his work further please try Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (Steve Martin and Canadian treasure John Candy) next.

I often put the tv volume on an odd number that’s not 5. I sometimes also set my alarm clock to something that doesn’t end with 5 or 0. Am I evil?

This movie and character were the epitome of 80s cool when I was a kid. Fun fact, the actors who played Ferris' parents actually got married after the movie. Sloan was played by Mia Sara, I only know of one other movie she was in, Ridley Scott's "Legend", a really cool fantasy movie starring a very young Tom Cruise. Another great John Hughes movie that you'd be just in time for Thanksgiving is "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles," starring Steve Martin and John Candy, it's a holiday tradition for me, love that movie.

Young Blood Priest

You might remember Cameron as one of the hostages on the bus in Speed. More Mathew Broderick movies: Glory, The Freshman, and of course War Games (the original War Games from the 80s).

Anodyne

War Games! Sadly relevant again today...

You were not wrong about Jeffrey Jones and his creepy eyes. He was arrested for child porn in 2002. Currently he is listed as a sex offender on the federal database. Edit: For another movie from this era that’s a riot, I would suggest Midnight Run (1988).

Odd Thomas

Well now you have to watch The Breakfast Club, arguably his best movie

Persnickity

I heard they are making a sequel to this. Its supposed to be about the two guys that took the Ferrari for a joy ride

Glory is so underrated. Hope to at least see it on a poll someday. It also features Morgan Freeman as well as Denzel Washington in one of his earliest film roles. Denzel even won an Academy Award for his role in it.

If you look at Ferris as a real person he'd be a manipulative asshole, but if you think of him as a live action Bugs Bunny then he's a lot easier to take. It's funny that George said Rooney is like a Wile E. Coyote character. Appropriate.

Brendan Rafferty

There is a theory that this is a darker film... all from Cameron's point of view... and the character of Ferris bueller is just a mischievous figment of Cameron's imagination to help inspire him

REDR58

WarGames is something Simone and George should definitely check out.

I LOVED this reaction, you guys! Wow! hahaha, it's unreal that the both of you hadn't seen this before. This movie's incredible. I first watched when I was just a kid, 12 or so. I was rolling with laughter then and still am now. Such a great comedy! I really liked both of your takes on it. I'm looking forward to more reactions of John Hughe's movies! :) The Breakfast Club, maybe? :)

Midnight Run - one of the greatest (and oft overlooked) comedies of the '80s. DeNiro and Grodin are just sublime as a comedy duo, and a cracking Danny Elfman score as well. "Oh yeah? Well here come two words for you..."

REDR58

High schoolers all looked older in the 1980s Scientific fact! As far as I'm concerned, the most important point of discussion about this film is trying to figure out exactly what is that vague, slightly indeterminate European-esque accent Mia Sara drops into from time to time. She was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY so who knows where that came from.

Most John Hughes films were filmed in Chicago and it's suburbs.

Martin

Great reaction. The next time you do an 80’s poll, please add Real Genius to it.

Com1xguy

I was just thinking about that movie while watching this one!

So much fun trivia! Ferris's parents must have been loaded. That Emulator keyboard he had cost around $8,000 new, in 1984. The film makers took advantage of an actual Cubs game and German-American parade for filming (shades of The Fugitive!). The car is, of course, a replica. Once, years ago, I found myself with an afternoon to kill in Chicago, so I thought: "Why not Ferris Bueller it?" There was no ballgame, but I went to the top of the Sears Tower, went to the commodities exchange and, of course, the best part, the Art Institute. Every time I go there I stop and stare, mesmerized like Cameron, at the big Seurat, "A Sunday Afternoon . . .". There are so, so many famous works of art there! American Gothic, Nighthawks, and so many impressionists; Picasso, Van Gogh, Renoir, to name only a fraction. Things you've only ever seen photos of! If either of you Canadian folk ever get down this way, it's one of the world's great collections and not to be missed.

Ben Stein - the boring teacher taking - anyone? - attendance forever has been an actual professor at a number of universities, and I considered auditing a class once, just so I could be there for attendance :-D He started as a speech writer for Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. He was also the host of a game show in the late 90s, which is where Jimmy Kimmel got his start, as co-host - Win Ben Stein's Money: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgBbhDSpcDI

Great reaction, love this movie!

I appreciated Cameron's character. I think many kids this age are afraid to step too far out of line. I was like that in High School. I remember looking up at the popular kids and thinking that they can get away with everything, while I would probably always get in trouble for the slightest fault. It would be like a dream for one of those kids to pick me and say "Please join me for an exciting day of ditching school." Stealing my father's car? You'd have to spend some time convincing me to break a rule, but in reality no price would be too high. I suspect a lot of us were Camerons or Jeanie's back then. I watch this movie through their eyes, and in the end, we love that Cameron and Jean grow enough to realize that living life is worth a bit of punishment. Did Ferris take advantage of Cameron? Yes, but it was his way of trying to get his friend out of his shell, and it worked. (Of course, , Ferris proved once again, that popular kids are teflon-coated, so he avoided punishment while Cameron and Jean took it instead to protect him, thus proving my theory!)

Yes we 40 years old take everything for what the 80s represented to present because it’s fun. And yupp we had teachers back in the day that talked a lot and nothing important was said.

I can't count how many times I've watched this movie. But it's been maybe 20 years since I last watched it. So it was really great to revisit it yet again with you two. I was just waiting for the wide eyes and agape jaws from you when the Ferrari soared out the window. You didn't disappoint. :) This movie had a great commentary track by Hughes on the DVD version (and I assume it's been copied to blu ray and the like). It was a pleasure to hear him talk about the movie and his experiences. One bit of trivia he shared was that the actors who played Ferris' parents actually met on the set of this movie, began dating, and eventually married.

Jomero

The best part about Ben Stein in this movie? All of his lectures were improvised by him. He's a very smart man steeped in economical history, so Hughes just let go of the leash and watched the magic happen.

Kinokind

Ooh, and the seedy parking garage guy is played by Richard Edson, the original drummer for Sonic Youth!

Carl Whitted

Love this movie 😄 Another great John Hughes movie is Planes, Trains and Automobiles with Steve Martin and John Candy. Also a Thanksgiving movie!

Ian Forbes

I don’t know for sure but Cannonball Run might be one of the first films with post credit scenes/bloopers. In any case, I think you both would find the film very funny. It’s a huge cast of people and just pure silliness.
