The Expanse: Season 2 - Episode 1 & 2 - Patreon Version

If our moon was destroyed not only would the tides and flow of water in the oceans change but the axis that our planet stays at would change as well. Meaning Antarctica would go from being -140F in some places to becoming the new tropics and the topics would become the new frozen wasteland of our planet assuming it stabilizes at all, ever.

Fredrik H.K. Jensen

So happy that you're continuing , since the ending of season 1 doesn't end at the first book! Haven't watched your reactions yet, but I'm putting it on now :D

King_Panarisi

Can we get 'The Pacific Miniseries' next? I'm sure I can't be the only one that wants this right?

Mike C

Surprised you guys did season 2! Hope you enjoy this season more

Gaius Frakking Baltar

Miller's rationale for killing Dresden (besides the obvious one that he was responsible for the genocide of 100,000 Belters) will be explained soon. And I like lasagna too!

JH

Beltalowda! Many thanks George and Simone... Mi pensa you putting in the true work, into this video, giving the show another chance—- and mi Appreciates it... Much respect, bossmangs… Taki, Oyedeng....

JH

But that’s Not gonna lie, in one of the other reaction videos I saw whenever Simone does the “patreon exclusives, now back to the movie” part, I saw it showed “The Expanse S1, S2” as part of the lineup exclusives—- which surprised me greatly that you guys would be doing season 2– but when I didn’t see you guys put anything up yet, I though it was a typo—- I’m Glad it wasn’t. 😊

Thank you for sharing more specifics of what you both tend to love and hate about shows. I agree with a lot of that. Holdens constant squinty eyed "I cant believe I got out of bed for this sh**" look of disgust on his face is a big turn off for me... I never read the books. So that had 0 to do with my immediate head over heels love for this show. For me it was immediately the REALISM of all things space and ship and station etc. All things science and engineering. One of my many "greatest passions in life" was always space and science and engineering. All other space related movies and shows are 99% fake as* BS all the time, everywhere you look. The ships and stations and weapons and "magic gravity buttons" are so very far from reality that 30 seconds into any other space show and the laws of physics vanish entirely. This show changed that. Not only is it a little realistic at times.... but it is Hyperrealistic all the time!! Every little detail everywhere you look. The ships, the stations, the weapons, the tools, the gravity boots.. etc etc. Even down to the f-ed up nature of the human races bad habits colonizing new territories. For anyone in the world who geeks out about space or science or engineering in real life... this show is a Wet Dream. The 1st of its kind. If you aren't super into that stuff then the 1st season leaves much to be desired. Going back after watching the whole series and watching season 1 again I easily agree that aside from all the geek out stuff I'm obsessed with... the rest of it kinda sucked. The actors (or the writing/directing of them) really kinda sucked. They do get much better. I was geeking out so hard on all the other 10,000 space/science/engineering things my brain had little power left to really pay close attention to the characters acting and/or personalities. I totally get why you didnt fall in love with it season 1. For myself and many others our geeking out masked over a lot of the character flaws. We all love different things. And I agree... if the books are so much better than the show (which everyone says they are) then OMG I have to read them some day soon.

Parabolica

For the record, the books were written by the same guys who wrote all 6 series of the show, so there is no disconnect between book and series in terms of who was the creative force behind it. The show runner was also the same guy all the way through. If you ever get the chance, the podcast Ty & that Guy is Ty Frank (one of the writers) and Wes Chatam (Amos) doing a breakdown of the show and does a great job of explaining the creative direction of the show.

ChickensAreRacist

Good on ya. Glad you said that. It’s tough to muster whatever it can take to be blunt for even good reasons such as yours.

AC10

I've heard them say multiple times in reactions they were watching season 2. I dont think they were trying to hide it. Maybe not in the youtube edits, but other full length videos with the extended intro and outros.

Luis Torrefranca

also, for T&TG viewers… “Welllllllcome BACK!!!”

Wow, now you're calling me out after I deleted my comments. You also left up your comment with the "spoiler" you called me out for. And you consider this not harassment/bullying? Do everyone a favor, and just stop. You won, there's no need for any further harassment/bullying like this.

Jack Burton

Thanks, guys, for doing season 2 and continuing with this series. It's a doozy but it's pretty rewarding. I do hope it hooks you with the story in this season like it did a lot of others.

Thomas Yanez

I haven't seen it mentioned yet, but the books are significantly different from the TV series. Half the characters/their stories you already have seen in the TV series come from later books. I guess they had a cast they wanted to use right away and had to give them something to do, so they rearranged many events to coincide instead of being sequential, or even threw away some characters to give the main characters more to do. Or, in at least one significant case simply created a character to pull together the actions of a number of other characters that only exist in the book. My biggest complaint about the TV show, after having read the books (after finishing the show) was what you already mentioned you were told about - that the characters were not anywhere nearly as aggressive with each other in the books. The TV show made up a LOT of conflict, especially between the crew of the Roci, that just didn't exist in the books at all. That said, you're not going to get more info in the books than you did in the TV show (without resorting to additional short stories read out of order.) For the most part, both of them deliver the info to you at the same pace it gets delivered to the characters. You find out many motivations when they are are acted on, or discussed between characters. You're not going to get a ton of internal dialogue explaining actions. You'll get explanations when the story wants you to have the explanations.

AC10

My apologies to anyone I upset. I was sharing my opinion on a passionate subject and no one is here for that. Apparently patreon somehow turns replies to deleted comments into their own original comment making a whole chain of of confusing messages no longer attached to the originals. I've deleted everything I can see. No hard feelings. Let's get back to enjoying watching movies and shows.

Martin Nicholls

I commented about things at the end of s1 and since then a few things occurred to me - firstly, the people, particularly our main cast in the beginning didn't know each other, and you have earth, mars and the belt de facto at war yet people from those forced together in a small space and forced to work together, and absolutely no reason to do anything but at best not like each other. Takes time to get over that and you see it already in these episodes. Secondly there's a model to the way that the books are transposed that I can't describe because it's actually somewhat of a spoiler and I suspect that's chaffing somewhat. Basically the whole first season ends with everything has gone to hell, there's been no real wins and I guess there's an extent to which that's somewhat of a downer. Anyway, cool that we're back - at the end of s1 I said I'd give it until the end of book one (which ends mid way through this season) and then see how you feel about the show at minimum; I hope you end up liking it because it is a great story with a complete arc and massive character development and many great characters you're not even going to meet for a long time - but also like I said before not every show is for everybody. I still haven't read the books (though I have them all), I don't think in any way it is a prerequisite, the show bleeds certain information I suspect you're looking for at strategic moments when it is relevant to the story - answers will come if you stick around.

Tenn Seven

It's so weird, seems like they're watching a different version of the show than I am. Their black screen transitions are shorter somehow than the version I'm watching (on Amazon) so their video keeps getting ahead of mine.

Daniel Popp

Well with how often the series has changed hands with SyFy, Amazon, and international distributors before Amazon, it's not surprising that there are sync issues. Should smooth out when they get to Season 4.

Thomas Yanez

I don't see what is wrong with the audience not knowing what is going on if the main characters don't know, either... in this case, it started with a group of people that were pushed together and were essentially nobodies. It makes sense that they have no knowledge (yet) of the larger machinations going on around them. But why is it bad that the audience also doesn't know? It's a mystery. Doesn't seem like a bad thing to me. One of my favorite things about the show is exactly this aspect of it... while we do have a little additional information, and so are able to speculate, we mostly get new information as it is revealed to the Roci's crew.

Śéáń

Miller's actions at the end of the episode is abrupt because it's an event directly from the ttrpg they've based the book and then series on. The player didn't want the scientist to get the stereotypical "let's hear him out" resolution.

Luis

Because leaving the audience in the dark could be a cover for bad plot structure. It’s the tortoise and the hare. The tortoise only beats the hare because of the hare’s large early lead that made the hare feel comfortable taking a nap. The Roci and the audience are the tortoise stepping into a plan that’s already well underway. If thing’s progress naturally then the hare should win. But because we don’t see what the front runner is doing then we can’t know if they’re progressing in their plans as they should or taking the customary plot nap allowing us and the Roci crew to catch up to their schemes.

Blacky

I won't spoil any hindsight into Miller (the ex cop). But I would argue his action was the reasonable one, by a big big margin. What are the alternatives? Letting a factional infighting group of freedom fighters/criminals under that guise getting control of the scientist and its research? Do you really want to give them to worse bioweapon ever conceived in the history of mankind? Something that every power in the solar system will go to war over? As Johnson said, "this station is now under OPA control". It's not like any single person could later ensure whatever is discovered is used only in a good way, the OPA has two dozens of armed fighters here, and an unknown number of them aren't really Johnson's men but are their own men or working for other factions (Black Sky type, just smarter and less loud mouth). Any delay could have bread catastrophe. Any discussion could have telegraphed his intention, and have other around him move or disarm him. Shoot first, shoot last, was in that instance the more reasonable course of action imo. Now again I'm not saying that's WHY he did it. But it's not illogical. Honestly I didn't remember this part from the show, and I was 100% expecting Holden to shoot him there, for these reasons. Edit: the "bigger bad" argument is because of lack of context on your part. That protomolecule was maybe sent, was maybe targeted at Earth, maybe targeted at Earth biosphere. That's a lot of maybe. But it also traveled at normal speed, this isn't Star Wars or Star Trek. So even if it had the ability to decelerate from near speed of light, it would have taken it thousands of years, maybe millions of year to travel. Yes on a civilization level maybe (big, BIG maybe) this was a first strike against Earth biosphere. But again, I wouldn't let that type of weapon and weapon's research in the hands of common groups (either OPA or UN or whatever) for a flimsy potential bad horizon in thousands and thousands of year of the human civilization's future. It's the longtermist fallacy. And sure, maybe alien know how to break what we think are the laws of physics. But if you think that, everything is possible, and you can't reason because you don't know anything about anything.

Blacky

As a side note, I don't understand what you don't understand about Amos. Without any spoiler or book knowledge or anything, to me it's extremely obvious what he is: a deep sociopath. He's accustomed to violence for some reason, and good at it, but he has absolutely zero empathy for other people, and don't care in the slightest in the harm he can inflict. That what his dialogue, his actions, and the way the character is played, is screaming at me. And he's not a mustache twirling villain, or a Dexter serial killer. He knows what empathy is, and has some intellectual form of it. He (mostly) know good from bad. He just cut through the emotional bullshit, go straight to the throat of both people and problems. And he somewhat knows how he's perceived, and clearly has learned to use that as an intimidation tool. To me he's one of the clearer, easiest character to understand.

Colin Stemp

I'm really happy and excited by this!! I loved The Expanse, and even originally joined Patreon for your Expanse reaction, but didn't end up watching the reaction of Season 1 yet, because from the comments it didn't seem like you enjoyed it enough to continue watching. It is such an AMAZING show, that seems to improve exponentially with each season. Really glad you decided to continue and I can't wait to start watching TONIGHT!!

Frankie H

Something you guys might have missed, Diogo, the kid who talked to Millar was in two previous episodes. As Miller mentioned he was in the first episode season 1 stealing sewer water, Miller let him go. He was also in an episode where his uncle throws him out of the ship and his uncle Mateo tries to destroy a martian ship. Diogo mentioned this to Miller in this episode. So he's not entirely a new character.

Colin Stemp

100% this! A lot of people get a somewhat negative reaction about movies/tv shows that are based on books because they are constantly second guessing and wondering if it stays true to the original (even when they haven't read the original), to the point that it often detracts from enjoying the movie/tv show from the start. The Expanse tried harder than almost any other adaption I've ever seen to be true and authentic, even though they had to obviously make a ton of changes in order for it to flow and work as a tv show. Are there changes? Absolutely, but they were made in collaboration with the writer, instead of in spite of the writer.

Colin Stemp

Agreed, in my opinion Amos is designed to be a severely damaged person with a clearly hard and horrific past, that now sees the world in a very simple way. His motives are on a much more base animal instinct level, rather than having some dark ulterior motive hidden from the viewer. Survive. At any cost.

BenJuan26

I'm glad you guys got to see a decent space battle when they took the spin station and the stealth ship. The politics and the character development are all well and good, but this show has some of the best space battles out there.

Thomas Wendel

Thank you for taking on season 2! I hope you enjoy it more this time around. It seemed like the mad scientist peeked your interest. That mystery carries the show here on out

Chris Gronau

Yeah, I first got into the series because NASA gave it a "thumbs up" for getting all the science right.

Chris Gronau

So glad you came back to this show.

redddfer44

It definitely reeked of an RPG-based decision. I've had quite a few players go trigger-happy just because they want some violence and hard-boiled attitude into the game.

redddfer44

AAAHAHAHAHA the DM making all NPCs unhelpful triggered some mighty strong 90s flashbacks. And the parents fighting metaphor YEAP. I kinda dug the worldbuilding of the first season combined with the hard science, but somehow these two episodes leave me cold. Some new characters are introduced and they're mostly more of the same: people scowling and yelling at one another in a way that's not even entertaining. The RPG comparison definitely feels apt. Fingers crossed that it gets better like everyone says it does.

Śéáń

@Ville tell me about it! We once had a session where we had a prisoner that we had to transport in broad daylight through a busy street. While we planned things out, one player snuck behind our backs (literally, he had a sidebar with the DM under false pretences) to kill the prisoner in his cell as his character had reason for revenge. So then the mission became a Weekend at Bernie's situation as we tried to shuffle the body of a well known military officer through a crowd while pretending he was just drunk.

Thomas Yanez

Disclaimer to prevent an incursion by @jesusmowsmylawn : This is asked just for my personal edification, simply out of curiosity, since I am probably not paying very close attention to how characters are portrayed when they first show up (after multiple rewatches). Which are the new characters that you found offputting? You don't need names, just rough descriptions of who or the scene you're referring to?

redddfer44

lmao. I can relate. Once upon a time, a PC tried shooting the other in the knee — in a system where that wouldn’t have healed easily. The trigger-happy gun-toters, ugh.

Richard Hodgetts

Thank you for sticking with this and giving season 2 a chance. One of the two writers (of the books and the show both) worked as George RR Martin's personal assistant. The extent of his influence may give you a clue as to how convoluted you can expect things to get, as well as the fact that very little is just thrown casually into the mix.

Tom Smith

I think Miller may have been abrupt and pre-emptive, but he's in the right. Committing genocide for the greater good is still genocide, you don't just get a free pass. Miller is a belter and saw what was happening on Eros, families being herded into chambers and irradiated for the sake of some Earth born* sociopath's science project. Miller could see the guy was just about to argue his way out of paying for his crimes and getting to continue his appalling 'project' because Fred Johnson is an empire builder and politician who would have protected him. The project had to be stopped and he was the lawman to do it. *I am assuming earth born as I cannot remember the book, but the show is very careful when choosing body types for their various roles, he looked like an Earther.

Peter Dillard

The complete back story on Amos is in a future season.

Hapsard

Hey, you know, just gonna say, there are so many stories where the characters and the audience are in the dark as to what's going on ... they are called mysteries, which is what the first season essentially is. From Miller's side it is what happened to Julie and why he was asked to look into it, and from Holden and the crew it is why the Canterbury was blown up and who is behind it. These stories come together end in Eros - leading to the next mystery. I will confess, the characters in the show are more volatile ... In the book Holden is a better leader right from the start for example, but really, the story and how it lays out is pretty flipping good. Not everything is wrapped up with a bow at the end of each episode.

GBmain

The books are GREAT... please read them... do a book review lol

WarWulf

Part of the reason why I (personally) consider this show top tier, is the "Show don't tell" style it adopts. When it first started everyone was just what we saw of them: Holden the natural leader, Naomi the techie with a mysterious past, Alex the washed up pilot and Amos the thug. As things progress more depth is slowly added to their stories. We've already seen something of Holden's upbringing. His family created him as a loophole to keep their land on an overpopulated planet. He was raised to fight against authority and believe it's right to fight for the underdog even against impossible odds. That inherent set of morals make him want to chase down the stealth ships in season 1 despite the fact that they can obliterate him without breaking stride and Naomi needs to take that option away to save the rest of the crew. If his mother hadn't realised what they were doing to him and sent him away, he'd still be standing guard at the farm gate protecting his family from the evil government. I completely understand that feeling of confusion in the first season, I had mixed feelings for it but stuck with it because it was a cool space show with mostly realistic mechanics (save for some future tech like the engines being efficient enough to provide constant thrust for millions of miles). I'd advise you to stick with it, pay attention to the details, they're the things that pay off. Each of the characters will make sense eventually, even (especially) Amos. I've just jumped into your reactions (pretty consistent youtube viewer and was interested to see your take on this series, it's one of my favourites), and I'm not offended if there are things you don't get or empathise with. This series doesn't follow the same Hollywood trope of the viewer being in on everything, or having a protagonist explaining their plan, it tends to provide you with the players perspective of figuring things out as they go along. I think as things progress you'll get those moments of understanding. The series doesn't explain everything to the viewer straight away, you're going to get frustrated by the crew not having clearly defined goals (they literally just lost their ship and all their friends and they're just trying to stay afloat right now) when faced with something that is so far beyond them that even the politicians are just minor players in the narrative. My own feeling is that things are culminating now, the protomolecule is on the board and that explains what the clandestine fight has been about, but now it's an X-factor and the genie is out of the bottle. There are awesome moments of clarity in each season going ahead, the first season was mostly setting the stage. BTW I'm loving the fact that I think Simone is making more sense of this than George, from the YouTube reactions I'm more used to George noticing more. Stay awesome.

theluckytwig

Really happy to see you guys trying The Expanse again! In my opinion, one of the most underrated shows in more recent years. I can see why you were apprehensive to continue it after the first season. I think season 2 is a big step up from season 1 and season 3 has to be one of my absolute favorite seasons of television. Excited to see whether or not it grows on you.

Florian Hoyer

the doctor was basicly mengele ... you dont negotiate with mass murderers ... then you end like after ww2 where people from nazi regime just continued working in usa on the nukes and rockets ... he knew that would be exactly what will happen and so ... he shot him

Florian Hoyer

i love the show but it has ratings from 9+ for later season i can hardly see that being underrated xD

Terrence Williams

I'm happy you're trying the series again. It genuinely has a difficult first season but I know you'll love it

Tim R

So glad to see you coming back to the series, I could tell you guys were not into Season 1. Happy to say I agree that S2 takes a major jump in the right direction. Reading the books would definitely be a good idea, there's so much depth you miss if you just watch the series, as good as I think it is.

Gábor Árki

I'm happy to see you're giving S2 a chance. I signed up to be a patron for the first time to see your Expanse reactions, but by the time I found out you're watching the show S1 has been mostly reacted to. At first I was a bit surprised you didn't like S1 that much, but giving it some thought I kind of felt the same originally. I was sold on the series after Episode 4, but by the end of the season I wasn't sure that I would come back to S2 and it took me a while to do so. I think the entire season 2 was out, or even S3 was already airing by the time I eventually decided to continue. And really glad I did. With S2 and S3 this show made it to be my #1 sci-fi show. So curious to see whether your opinion is changing too or not. I do get your arguments though. There is definitely a lot of tension and aggression between the characters. On one side conflict makes for good story, but it also makes characters less likeable. This is especially true to S1 as the crew doesn't really feel like an actual, functioning crew who trust each other and work together. Also, there is a lot of backstory and layers to each of the characters that will be uncovered over time. Re-watching this show is actually quite great as there is a lot of foreshadowing and hints regarding those plot-lines that you might not pick up the first time or don't fully remember them by the time they play out. I just recently started reading the book series and I am barely ahead of the events of these episodes. So far I can confirm, the characters feel a bit different. So far I'm liking it and not sure which one I consider better. But it seems to be an interesting journey to read the book and watch the show at the same time.

Turnt SNACO

I don't know if it's ever been recommended or anywhere on your radar, but a show in a similar vein that yall couldn't possibly not like is Battlestar Galactica (2004). And the nice thing is all you have to do is watch the 3 hour pilot (2-part miniseries) to know if you want to watch more or not. If you're into it, Season 1 pretty much picks up where the pilot leaves off. And it feels like it does in its 3 hour pilot what it took The Expanse a whole season to do, which is set up the world, characters, and a bit of a mystery to create some intrigue so the viewer wants to keep watching. It's an impressively consistent show its entire 4 season run, I can count the number of forgettable episodes on one hand.

p0sthum4n

The number of specifically bad episodes is one thing, but the way the entire plot falls apart by the end of the third season and continues straight off the rails in the last season before nosediving straight into the ground at the end is pretty bad.
