The Goonies - Patreon Version

Comments

G Lam

I know this is a late comment, but I'm just going through the Patreon list of stuff I missed, and just wanted to mention the following which I found on IMDB years ago and found very interesting. "The pirate ship was entirely real. All the shots were filmed in the ship. After the film, it was offered to anyone who would take it. No one wanted it, so the ship was scrapped."

Turnt SNACO

Sweet! I was born in 1989 and never happened to see this myself....seems like it's finally time!

Mario

Love this movie....looking forward to another great reaction. :-)

Jeff

When I was a little kid that mom scared the shit out of me Worse than any horror movie monster

King_Panarisi

In french you can tell the diffrence form stalagmite and stalactite with the M from 'mite' and the T from 'tite' being the begin letter for 'monter' and 'tomber' ( ascend and to fall ).

redddfer44

In English, stalaCtites hang on Ceiling, stalaGmites are on the Ground. (Funnily enough, in Finnish, almost the same rule applies.)

This movie was probably the most influential for me as a kid. Between how smart Data is to the pirate ship sailing off at the end, I was forever changed. Edit: I really would like a proper translation, George. I always enjoy finding out the truth behind all the bad translations.

Old guy here (I was 14 when this case came out). The chaotic nature of the kids was a bit more of a thing in movies back then. You also have to consider this was released prior to PG-13 existing. PG movies had a lot of shit in them that you wouldn't typically see in kid's movies today. Another bit of trivia - John Matuszak (Sloth) was a defensive lineman that played for the Oakland Raiders. That's why he was so huge (6'8", 300+ pounds).

In addition to the Matrix, you've also seen Joe Pantoliano in the Fugitive on this channel.

David Crabtree

Great reaction! You guys have to watch the movie Sean Astin starred in half way between Goonies (1985) and Lorof the Rings (2001), and that's Rudy (1993)!

Odd Thomas

Donner made Superman and the Lethal Weapon movies. Huge in the 80s. Kids movies back then didn't pander to parents like they do now. Everything's been Disneyfied.

Odd Thomas

Some other great 80s kids movies you would like: Short Circuit & Flight of the Navigator

Logan Kerlee

I was born and raised in western Washington. This movie is a NECESSARY watch for kids up here. I'm glad you both enjoyed the watch. It's definitely a thrill ride. :)

Monica Alarcon

The Doctor has saved all the universe and all of time and space several times before tea time... That's more than the Avengers

Kinokind

Yeah, although the movie is a fun adventure, those Spielberg-era smart-ass kids grate on me (see Monster Squad). I was 25 when this came out and they annoyed me a bit then. The fat kid, the stereotypical asian smart kid, etc. You'll note that the screenplay was by Chris Columbus, the creator of the king of the smart-ass kids, Kevin, in Home Alone. And c'mon, no kid ever said "rich stuff", we all knew what treasure was! It sounds like an adult trying to sound like a kid. Spielberg liked those chaotic, disaffected, broken-family kids (see E.T.), probably because it reflected his experiences as a child. Imagine if Tarentino made a kids coming-of-age film. They'd all be ridiculed by their parents and relegated to watching grindhouse films in seedy dive theaters!

SmallWoodenDuck

Seems to be running at a different frame rate or something for me. Keeps dropping out of sync with the version I’m watching.

Robert C

The scenes relating to Superman, Gremlins and Indiana Jones were in reference to Stephen Spielberg And Richard Donner. The mum that you recognised also played the police psychiatrist in Lethal weapon.

Steve

My science teacher told us the way to remember it is that tights (as in the things you wear) go down. I think he was a bit of a perv, but it worked for me.

Nathan Swapp

I was told the difference between Stalagmite and stalactites is that stalactites hold tight to the ceiling or else they fall.

Kinokind

The ones on the floor tend to be smaller, thus "mites".

Com1xguy

When this movie first came out, I must have seen it in the theatre 20 times. Love it even more than Indiana Jones.

Lyonheart86(BryonH)

there was a wwf wrestler in the 90s called the goon whos gimmick was a bully hockey player lol . Astin's biggest roles in my opinion before lotr were goonies and Rudy.

Ruphus

Saw this as a kid. Loved the reaction and your willingness to cover it. Need more like this!

I'm a Goonie. My friends and me were THE Goonies in our town back in the day, no pirate treasure but I somehow convinced my friends to explore the sewers on skateboards, not the shitty part, the drainage tunnels, going up was a journey, coming back down was fast (80s kids, we were crazy and unsupervised). Oh man this movie is pure 80s nostalgia for me, almost 40 years later and it's still a fun movie. And yes, the first time I saw Samwise Gamgee I was like, "That's Mikey", and Rudy, he's also famous as Rudy, from the movie "Rudy". He was also one of the kids in "War of the Roses" which you should DEFINITELY watch, it's hilarious, directed by Danny De Vito, who also directed "Throw Mama From The Train", the lady who played Mama Fratelli in this is the Mama in that too. Funny Simone mentioned Jake's voice, Robert Davi actually recorded an album singing opera songs. And even though I'm Mexican, I'm totally fine with the stereotyping and with Mouth torturing Rosalita, that bitch deserved it, she killed SELENA! 😂

Odd Thomas

Stand By Me is a lot like Goonies (even with some cast members) just without the pirates. It's also similar to IT, both were written by Stephen King. Speaking of which...Chapter 2?

Kocyte

Is it really any surprise that the criminals would lock up Sloth in the basement, they aren't exactly upstanding citizens. They already treat him like crap, and he gets upset about it. So I imagine they lock him up as to not deal with him. Very cruel none-the-less.

Gary Fixler

I've remembered since touring one of those tourist trap caves with my parents in the 80s, where the guide told us when stalac"MITES" climb UP your legs, you pull your stalag"TITES" DOWN! "Stalagmites come up? Stalactites go down!" I love that there are a half dozen ways to remember them in these comments, and none of them are the same, and they don't match the one Simone found. So many mnemonics.

Gary Fixler

I installed the Video Speed Controller extension into Chromium. Just had to use it yesterday for the first time. I went into the settings and changed the step amounts from 0.1 to 0.01, and then played with the default S key to slow down their video until it matched up for the rest of the time at 0.96x speed.

Since the 80s I've thought Ke Huy Quan was pronounced "kee hi (long i) kwan," but when he was doing the rounds for "Everything Everywhere All At Once" the talk show hosts kept calling him "kee hee kwan," so I've been wrong for 35 years.

Jack Burton

for kids from the 80's this was peak movie entertainment. It didn't get any better than this. Everyone quoted this movie, imitated this movie, we did the truffle shuffle, we imagined we were treasure hunting in the backyard, etc.

Raven Dark

Yes, I think the name Goonie is supposed to be like the Losers Club in It, but Goonies, because the area they lived in was called The Goondocsks. Which they said about six times. They also explained how the ship got in the cave. Mikey said it in that five-minute long speech near the start of the film. He mentioned that there was a war and Willie's ship, The Infierno, got trapped in a cave. There was cannons and explosions going off, and it caved in, trapping Wille and his ship inside.
