This has a link to Coming To America—- I hope everyone sees it! 😂

Lindsay G

Comments I see regarding the connection between the two always insist the reactor NEEDS to watch Trading Places first, but it really is just for one joke unconnected to the rest of the Coming To America and doesn't lessen the movie if you miss it. However, people pointing it out kind of gave away spoilers for this movie by pointing it out.

I guess you guys haven't watched Breaking Bad, that guy in the cell you were trying to remember (Giancarlo Esposito)is best known for Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, and The Boys.

Suggestion: Ghostbusters 2

You should really think about watching Brewster's Millions after this. Richard Pryor, John Candy, Rick Moranis... so many good actors. (Yakov Smirnoff anyone?)

I agree with Simone that the Beeks ending was really cringe, was the main flaw in this comedy. Because while Beeks was criminal and a-hole, that does not justify torture and murder. As it stands, he cannot eat or drink with his mouth taped shut, and he is going to die of dehydration in a day or two. It's a horrific ending. It reminds me of the movie Police Academy where two of the cadets were brown-nosers nobody liked, so they tricked them into going into a rough gay bar, with the implication they were forcibly raped in there. And it's like, yeah, they are jerks, but being a jerk is not a crime, and certainly not a crime punishable by rape. We're supposed to laugh at this? It is also similar IMO to Ferris Bueller's Day Off where the principal was unlikeable but apart from that he did nothing wrong and, in fact, he was absolutely RIGHT to suspect Ferris was playing hooky. And what did he get for being right? Tortured throughout the day, and I think he lost his job by the end. And his only crime was trying to enforce school regulations on a student who was flouting them. To me, the punishment should fit the crime and these comedies all left me kind of ill for the part where they went WAY overboard in torturing some one just for being a jerk, a brown-noser, too by-the-book, or whatever. Fortunately, Trading Places had enough good humor and heart, and an original enough script, that I really enjoyed it despite this flaw (can't say the same for Police Academy or Ferris Bueller's Day Off). Oh, just recalled Animal House does this, too. The "bad guys" who are made to suffer in Animal House are snobby and uptight and unlikeable, but they are made to suffer well beyond what would fit the crime. Like Trading Places, I think that movie had enough good stuff to be an overall good movie, but still I did not care for the humor based on making some one suffer just because they are unlikeable. In fact, I'm pretty sure that's the definition of bullying. When you abuse the person deemed socially off. So these movies basically try to make you embrace a bullying mentality. "He's not like us. He's a downer! He's too uptight! Let's kill his pets and pay some guys to rape him and set some dogs to attack him!" Bleh, that kind of humor just does not sit well with me.

Agreed, great movie, except the train part.

The opposite of Pygmalion is noilamgyp, I think.

I know Penelope is terrible, but her actress has nice Caitlyn-of-Arcane vibes, so I can't really hate her...

Do people dress up like that for New Years? Hell, yeah! New Year masquerades are - or were - a big thing. Haven't seen anybody have one for years though. :-(

George, the system they use on the trading floor you were asking about is called "open outcry" and it's was last used on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. It's no longer used because of computers you were right. The traders did not need to"hear" the trades because it was based on a system of hand signals. All you had to do to make a trade was to yell at a trader to get his or her attention then use the hand signals to buy, sell and in what amounts etc.

That is a spectacular thumbnail 😂

And welcome to the oblivious problematic 80s.

If you are still looking for x-mas movies to react to, I highly recommend Scrooged with Bill Murray.

Don Ameche, who played Mortimer Duke, was a popular actor and leading man from the 1930's into the mid-sixties, when he dropped from public view. When John Landis was casting the film, he stated that for the character he wanted a leading man "like Don Ameche" but everyone vowed that Don Ameche was dead. Landis contacted the SAG who stated that Ameche's royality payments were being sent to his son and Landis accepted it. However, a secretary mentioned seeing Ameche in Santa Monica. Landis called a "D.Ameche" using directory assistance, and he stated he wasn't working because no one had offered him a role. Ameche went on to enjoy a huge resurgence in his career, and won an Academy Award for his role in 1985's "Cocoon".

I never noticed that they are walking right by the World Trade Center at the end.
