So fucking incredible. Really happy you got to this.

Mario Garfio

I’m not sure you guys reference this, but it’s based on aStephen King book. Hence the “chapters”

Charlie Keeler

Excellent! Top fave favorite film, and novel for sure

By the way it's 1.6km to a mile not 2.2 haha 😂 sorry to be 'that' guy

Hector Rivera

The Shining on Christmas eve, you Canadians are hard-core as fuck 🤘🏼

Boobs at 18:18 mark. Beware of YouTube police.

Joe Williams

There's a great video on YouTube of Jack Nicholson psyching himself up for the axe scene while the crew set up. Barking, waving his arms around. Absolutely wild.

Stephen King HATED a lot of Kubrick's choices in this version of the story...but once he had signed over the film rights he basically had no authority to force changes. From this movie forward, any movie adaptation of a Stephen King story comes with King's ability to veto any major changes.

Doctor Sleep picks up with the kid years later. Worth a watch.

FYI. , Scatman Crothers, who played Hallorann, was a famous musician and scat singer in the 40s and 50s.

TIL an Advocaat is a traditional Dutch alcoholic beverage made from eggs, sugar, and brandy.[1] The rich and creamy drink has a smooth, custard-like consistency. The typical alcohol content is generally between 14% and 20% ABV.

With next Saturday’s film being Twister, there’ll be a nice callback to The Shining when they’re at the drive-in.

Charlie Keeler

sooo many theories on what Stanley was doing here...the book is fairly different, and maybe the scariest novel I've read. but the theories put forth are worth traveling down the rabbit hole with imo

Check out Barry Lyndon - a lot of people complain that its 3h, but its the most visually stunning film. Slow burn for sure, but every shot is literal artwork.

Oscar Diggs

Early Stephen King was essentially a connected universe of kids with special psychic abilities and various malevolent entities interacting. The entities may all have been the same, or at least they were connected and represented the evil in the world. At some point he seems to have abandoned this, probably around the time that Dark Tower went off the rails I always liked the way his books all seemed like the same story because of this.

Every time I see Shelley Duvall, I can't help but see her as Olive Oyl with Robin Williams in the Popeye movie

sol stapleton

The actor who plays Wendy was emotionally abused by kubric, like telling the crew to ignore to make her emotions as real as possible. So kubric was kind of a asshole

You HAVE to do the Director's Cut of Doctor Sleep now. It's a fantastic sequel that answers a lot of questions

FYI, it's 1.6km to 1 mile. So 20 miles would be about 32km.

The main reason that the phone lines (and power lines) are above ground, and also why so much of American infrastructure sucks when it could be The Best In The World is the cost. It costs way, way, way less to just fix an occasional break then than it would to be incur the cost of burying a couple of hundred thousand miles of main power and phone lines. And on top of that there are literally millions of miles of distribution lines to individual homes, schools, businesses, etc. that would have to be buried themselves, or dug up and adapted to the new infrastructure.

Need to do the director's cut of Doctor Sleep. Great movie, great sequel, and really completes the whole story.

Yeah, The Shining still holds as the scariest book I've read as well, and as someone here who's old as dirt, and was so excited for this film after seeing the trailer for the first time, and then was so disappointed when I saw it (opening night, cuz old), I'm in the minority of people who think this film is SO overrated. Great cinematography, no question, and some creepy scenes, but I pretty much hate all the casting, except for Scatman Crothers. I just recently read Kubrick's treatment for this film that he put together before writing the script, and there are references there to a scrapbook Jack finds with a history of the Overlook, but it was left out and kind of helped the plot (although you can still see it a little in a few shots at his writing desk). There was also a bit they filmed with Shelley Duvall waking up in the hospital at the end, but I forget what that scene helped explain. The two-part TV remake that Stephen King helped produce - because he also hated the film - didn't do anyone any favors and was just not good at all, partly due to casting, again, and partly due to things they kept from the book, especially the hedge animals instead of the hedge maze - the one good thing they changed in the film - but the animation on the hedge animals coming to life just looked cheesy, as did actually seeing Tony talk to Danny like it was in the book (Tony is just Danny from he future) because they just had the actor floating around and it was dumb, which is why they used the finger thing in the movie rather than try to make that look good in the film.

George is exactly right. He sold his soul. He asked for a beer. Got whiskey or bourbon

watch room 237. its proto qannon bullshit, but interesting all the same. it claims kubrick staged the moon landing and put clues in this film. apart from being completely nonsense, it does a good job of film analysis. people debate to this day how jack escaped the freezer. if the ghosts werent real and all in their minds, who let him out? something that is tragic is that shelly duvall had a predisposition to mental illness. this film was the inciting incident that brought her illness to the forefront and shes struggled to this day. she recently gave an interview that im sure you can find. the problem is, this was a time when it was ok to torture actors, literally torture them, and generally this targeted women. those reactions from shelly that simone called "so real", were real.

David Crabtree

I can't watch this movie anymore without thinking of the Simpson's Treehouse of Terror spoof.

Nikodevious

The hotel entities wanted to consume Danny for his powerful psychic gifts, enormously powerful gifts considering that he nearly scrambled Hallorann's noodle from thousands of miles away during the telepathic scream for help. The hotel was already feeding on him in a very limited way just by his extended physical presence, over time the "spirits" becoming more and more tangible. Danny's Shining was so bright that he passively awakened them all.

Barstoolteacher

One thing I don’t see talked about much is how we see a lot of the movie through, what feels like, Wendy’s perspective, but if you notice her perspective is unreliable. The most notable moment is her watching a tv that’s clearly not plugged in, lines are down, and Danny doesn’t even seem to notice it being on. Furniture and decorations will also disappear or be in different spots when she’s on screen. So, it makes me wonder how much more of Jack’s insanity was real or a hallucination of Wendy’s?

Moisty Justice

The Hotel wanted danny's powers. im saying this bc i dont think the film portrayed The Shining powers rightfully

Adam Wetstein

IT is almost like kubrick is a genus LOL

You should watch Dr. Sleep too. It follows Danny as an adult, and was surprisingly good! ^_^
