Just got finished watching. Wow! That was a good watch. I haven't seen this movie for many years. lmao, there were definitely times where I expected you both to have shocking reactions or at least shocked faces and I've got to say that this movie did not fail me. xD I'm glad that you both enjoyed the ride. It's a very dark one. lmao, I love that George realized that The Simpsons covered it years and years ago. I hope that Simone gave that a watch shortly after. :)

Whenever I hear people say "What's 'Here's Johnny?'" I feel so old. lol

JediLounger

Perfect Christmas movie. lol.

Odd Thomas

You should watch the sequel, Doctor Sleep, too. It could never top the original but it's still really, really good

Theoshin

Ohh man can't wait

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Yes, the sequel Doctor Sleep is great, it's officially cracked my top 5 all time sequels, along with T2, Aliens, The Godfather Part Two, Mad Max 2 aka The Road Warrior. And I heard Stephen King actually loved it too. Also, the hotel is real but it's called the Stanley Hotel, it's in Colorado, Stephen King stayed there, and it is allegedly haunted. Also, have you noticed how many of Stephen King's characters were writers? He said once that this character, Jack, in particular was based on a time when he himself was having trouble dealing with the pressures of being a husband and father.

This film has such a rabbit hole. So many theories of fear Kubrick was trying to say/explore with it cause it is different , or changes from the book (which King took issue with). Plenty of YouTube vids. Also might want to check out Room 237(it’s a documentary)

Odd Thomas

I love how TUESDAY scares everyone the first time, lol

Jim Frykman

George participates in a very specific shin-splinting fight club

Jeff

The biggest reason power and phone lines are above ground is cost. It's something like 10 times the price to put lines underground. Above ground is also easier to access for repairs.

I'm sure Santa skipped the Overlook hotel on Christmas Eve. Twas the night before Christmas and all through the hotel Not a creature was stirring, not even a-- Oh, what the hell?! There was Jack with an ax, and the Grady twins want to play There were screams of terror, and horror and dismay But Santa gives all good kids a toy There's little Danny Torrence, such a very good boy Saint Nick and the reindeer flew over that night Bearing gifts for all to make everything right As they approached the Overlook to land the sleigh Santa shouted, "We're not stopping here! No fucking way!" 🎅🎄

I adore this movie and love Shelly's performance. She seems like such a lovely person. It makes me sad knowing she was treated terribly.

Gratch... just Gratch

This is my favorite of the Kubrick movies. But I must admit I like the book better. In the book Jack Torrance is an alcoholic with anger issues who's trying really hard to be better for his son and wife. In the movie Jack Nicholson looks crazy from scene one. When they're in the car talking about the Donner Party he looks like he's already planning to murder them both.

Sean

I hope you show Simone the Simpsons parody after this and George shh! You wanna get sued?

Ben

Love this movie, looking forward to watching your reaction... in like 2 weeks! I can't imagine watching The Shining at Christmas, this time of year I prefer watching wholesome, feel-good movies. As much as I love The Shining, it doesn't really qualify! Looking forward to checking out your reaction though, honestly I'm surprised you haven't reacted to it yet, it's quite an iconic movie.

Middy

I think the reason Doctor Sleep succeeds in not ruining The Shining's legacy is because it doesn't attempt to replicate or piggyback on anything Kubrick did. It's not a particularly scary movie (barring a couple of intense scenes) and seems perfectly content telling its own story. While it is technically a continuation, it feels more like another movie set in the same universe than a direct sequel.

Michael Robayo

A masterpiece of a movie. Please watch Doctor Sleep, and it's really good!

Question for Cinebinge: After watching all these classic films, from some of the best film makers in history, has it changed your approach to creativity at all? I know you both once had little history with movies (which is why you made this channel) but a lot of history with gaming or role playing. Has cinema noticeably enhanced playing or making games or hobbies at all?

Christoph Plank

I don't think Jack became possessed, he was abusive before. The best theory centers around the idea that Jack not only hurt Danny, but also sexually abused him. That's not what King's book is about, mind you. Novel and film are separate entities by different authors. And King hated Kubrick's work. Most theories (faked moon landing, native americans, holocaust, ...) are a bit emotionally illogical. Kubrick is a filmmaker.

Jeff I.

I've seen this movie a few times and just realized that Shelley Duvall in this one reminds me a lot of Toni Collette in Hereditary. They're both kind of tall, with slender builds and 'unique' faces (not in an ugly way!) that make their expressions of horror/panic/etc. very memorable.

Regarding "Doctor Sleep"... it's written by Stephen King, directed by Mike Flanagan, starring Ewan McGregor as a grown up Danny. What more do you need?

Brant

Fitting that you’re doing this the week before Twister

JediLounger

So in terms of the photo at the end, Kubrick did an interview where he discussed what the photo could mean(and a bunch of other stuff). Don’t want to post spoilers in the comments, so here is the interview. http://www.visual-memory.co.uk/amk/doc/interview.ts.html In terms of Dr. Sleep, absolutely watch it. It’s a wild movie.

Rhys Haug

Always puts me in the Christmas mood!

Young Blood Priest

Nicholson always looks crazy that’s why King said he didn’t like that he was cast in the roll. As soon as you see him you already know he’s gonna flip out. King also said he didn’t want Kubrick directing. King felt certain things in his book required a level of belief and since Kubrick was an atheist King didn’t believe he could pull it off.

Young Blood Priest

Here’s Johnny was a reference to Johnny Carson who hosted The Tonight Show for 30 years from the early 60s to the early 90s. Heeeere’s Johnny was how Ed McMahon the MC introduced him every night.

Steve Mercier

You guys should really check out "Doctor Sleep". Genuinely spectacular sequel to one of the best horror movies ever (...this one, if that wasn't clear).

Haye Zeus

The whole Shelley Duvall thing has been a bit overblown. Like i’m not defending Kubrick and I think the way he handled things was obviously shitty. But she did not quit acting after this. And there were other contributing factors to her mental break. People like to simplify and conflate mental illness into a way that makes me irritated. But just like to clear that. Still the way Kubrick stressed her out was still a shitty thing on his part.

Metacortex

You guys should react to Meet Joe Black. It stars a handsome Brad Pitt in his prime!

REDR58

Incidentally, if he looks familiar, Lloyd the bartender is played by Joe Turkel who was Dr. Tyrell in Blade Runner (1982).

Gary Fixler

Yeah, especially up a mountain, especially if there's a lot of rock and boulders to break through, which is common in mountains.

David Zabel

If you want your questions answered I highly recommend you watch the sequel Doctor Sleep, another excellent movie starring Ewen McGregor. The actor that played Danny has a bit role in the movie but other than that he didn't do anymore acting after The Shining. There is also a miniseries of the same name that is more true to the book that King was directly involved in and is also very good.

Tom Ekstrand

Two words: Doctor Sleep. Does a very different thing with this but a very worthy sequel.

Joshua M Freeman

"Here's Johnny" is a reference to 'The Tonight Show' which at the time of this movie was hosted by Johnny Carson. At the beginning of every show, the announcer/co-host (Ed McMahon) would read off the guests appearing on the show and then introduce Carson by saying, "Here's Johnny!"

JoeySnowyNoey

The sequel for this movie is amazing, and it actually changed my view of this movie. While I still love this movie. There's some heart and more emotional elements that are in the sequel, and while the heartlessness and coldness in this film works for what Kubrick was going for. I think I like the more emotional elements that are in Doctor Sleep.

Jim Johnson

Joining the chorus of people saying that the sequel is amazing and you should definitely watch it.

Jason Rivero

Just here to second everyone else who also recommended checking out Dr. Sleep. Amazing movie and much closer to the original book as well. Oh, and great reaction as always!

Bruce Bromley

FYI, for anyone with an older copy of the film. They watched the extended cut, not the original 119 minute cut.

Daniel Simmons

I love this movie, but I do prefer the book. If you read the book, you'll see why King doesn't like this movie. Nicholson seemed too crazy/insane from the beginning and didn't really portray the full descent into madness like the book did (even though I still really enjoyed his performance.)

JoeySnowyNoey

It works for what Kubrick is going for but I totally agree! Jack just seems so crazy from the beginning, you honestly aren't that surprised he goes off the handle. It would've been cool if he honestly seemed and looked like a nice guy and then when insane. That would be scarier to me.

RJ MacReady

Reasons why most infrastructure isn't underground is because of cost. Thats the main factor. Although in NYC all electrical and phone lines and whatever else are underground.

Tyler Mckenzie

I'm from Colorado and have been to the hotel they shot some of these scenes in. It's very spooky in there.

Kinokind

Writing about this film can, and does, fill volumes. I remember seeing it in the theater and being bewildered and pissed off about 3/4 of the way through, when it diverged completely from the book and veered off into Kubrick land. The book had a definite structure with three very definite acts and a conclusion. Kubrick's version just wanders off and freezes to death. That said, I agree it's a masterpiece, but can certainly see why King hated it. It destroys his structure, and Nicholson is WAY over the top (if brilliant) in his performance. So, fun facts: The opening music over the helicopter shot is the famous Dies Irae from the Latin mass for the dead. Although all sets, the interior of The Overlook is based on a real hotel, but not the one who's exterior we see. In the helicopter approach to The Overlook, there is obviously no maze behind it. The internal geography is impossible, with windows looking out to where interiors should be, doors that only exist on the outside of rooms, and a ballroom that is obviously impossibly large. It is suspected that Kubrick did these things deliberately to disorient the viewer, as there are many weird things going on in the background of shots. Furniture disappears and reappears in the background, light switches vanish, etc. Once you know this you can't unsee it. Some think these are continuity errors, but that's not likely with Kubrick's obsession with detail. I think it's part of what makes the film great.

Adverb

If you do watch Doctor Sleep you should watch the director's cut. It's definitely the superior version of the movie.

Tyler Mckenzie

Fun fact: The Stapleton airport doesn't exist anymore it was shut down over 20 years ago. And the town of Stapleton was renamed to Central Park in 2020

Tanx

during the typewriter scene I couldn't help but think "I wonder if this is what the current draft of the Doors of Stone looks like?"

Sophia Marchildon

Can I see the movie? Guess not; either your two faces or the short yt.

Jim Johnson

You have to have your own copy of the movie to watch along with. Posting the entire movie un blurred and with audio would get their channel destroyed by copyright.
