John Howard

Time for the Christopher Guest universe of comedies!

China Andronicus

You would know Christopher Guest at least from Princess Bride as the six-fingered Count. He's also married to Jamie Lee Curtis. Michael McKean (David St Hubbins) can be seen in the film Clue as Mr. Green and in the comedy Airheads with Brendan Fraser and Steve Buscemi. If you haven't seen either of those, I can't recommend them enough.

SnabbKassa

Dana Carvey from Wayne's World is one of the mimes, as well as Billy Crystal. And Ed Begley Jr. is the son of Ed Begley from 12 Angry Men.

pinkdino99

If you watch the Metallica documentary it is almost beat for beat this movie (just not as funny). Christopher Guest whom plays Nigel plays the corrupt doctor in Reiner's A Few Good Men.

JayF

This reaction goes to 11. Yay!

JediLounger

Oh god lol. Here we go, gonna have to break my amplifier knob so I can get it to 11. Edit: as another commenter said, you guys are aware of Reiner and his work. You should also check out Stand By Me (1986). Also, another movie that is not a satire but draws a great deal of inspiration from Spinal Tap(specifically love of music and using it as a plot driver) is Detroit Rock City (1999). Simone, the movie you asked about at the end is called Best in Show (2000). It’s hysterical, you would love it.

JayF

lol, wow guys. Rob Reiner directed at least two movies you've reacted to (now three with this one). He did The Princess Bride and A Few Good Men.

Rob Parry

Great choice. You guys also reacted to The Princess Bride, A Few Good Men and Misery in case you forgot directed by Rob Reiner. The run of movies he directed from 1984-1992 was just about perfect. I highly suggest watching the last 2 great Rob Reiner directed movies. Stand By Me (coming of age movie based on a Steven King short story) and When Harry Met Sally (probably the best modern romantic comedy next to Annie Hall)

JayF

Simone, you asked about the guy on the t-shirt. I think you were referring to Gumby. He was an old animated TV character.

dieselbeast

This isn't a movie that I would normally watch I honestly only watched it so I can see your guy's reaction because I find your reactions very fun and enjoyable to watch, with that being said however personally this movie was underwhelming for me, unless I'm missing something, I mean I did chuckle a handful of times I did find the dialogue funny however I felt they could have been way funnier if delivered better with a better cadence or better facial expressions etc I do enjoy dry humor I love Seinfeld sarcasm etc but this didn't quite land for me, to each their own

Rob Parry

I would also suggest checking out the movie Almost Famous from the year 2000 maybe the best movie on the rock music era, based on a true story and a great coming of age move as well.

fargoboyle .

It's our lucky Bundy everyone

offbrandhotdogs

If you guys are looking for something else in the "mockumentary" genre, "Best in Show" is a mockumentary movie about dog shows. Edit: I see you mentioned it at the end. Definitely worth a watch.

Bruce Bromley

George, if I remember correctly, there was no marketing of the movie like they were a real band. All the actors were too well known and recognizable. They did go on a real tour and on talk shows as the band. Their music is all on Spotify along with their single "Break Like the Wind".This is the template for all mockumentaries and shows like The Office.

Samuel Preston

I’m am new here. Can anyone give me some advice on how to best enjoy the full length reviews? I can’t quite figure out how to enjoy the reaction along with the movie. How does everyone else do this?

Jeremy Charlie

This was a Rob riener film. Christopher Guest actually takes this mockumentary style into his films. Like, Best in Show, A mighty Wind, and For Your Consideration. You eventually ought to watch those films if you enjoy this.

Bruce Bromley

Simone, you probably already found out but, Rob Reiner also directed The Princess Bride.

Odd Thomas

The best mockumentary will always be Drop Dead Gorgeous with Kirsten Dunst. It could never be made today, lol

Dave Gaskin

Have the film playing on your TV in the background, and watch the reaction on a mobile device. Or vice versa. :)

Tenn Seven

The limo driver (Bruno Kirby) was also played young Clemenza in Godfather Part 2. He's the one that stole the rug with Vito and was ready to shoot that cop if he walked in on them. Also, for anyone who likes this movie I recommend "Anvil! The Story of Anvil," which is basically a real documentary about a Canadian rock group that is hilariously a lot like this movie.

Ginger

Yay, this made my day! :D Love your reaction and the movie. <3

Sam Fuller

The little green guy on Nigel's shirt is Gumby.

Ben M.

And Waiting for Guffman. The chronological order is Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, A Mighty Wind, and For Your Consideration.

Michael Robayo

Rob Reiner also directed Misery, The Princess Pride, and A Few Good Men.

sarCC

Yay!!! I love this movie! It's well worth getting a physical copy on DVD or bluray as the in-character commentary track is incredibly funny. I have probably watched the movie more with the commentary on than not at this point.

REDR58

For anyone wondering, the ballcap "USS Ooral Sea, OV-4B" that Marty DiBergi wears throughout the movie originally read "USS Coral Sea CV-43" which is a former US Navy aircraft carrier. Apparently the people making the movie thought they needed to get permission from the Navy to let Rob Reiner wear such a hat (I doubt this is actually necessary), so the movie's producer had the hat altered, changing the "CV-43" to "OV-4B." CV-43 is just the number of the real naval vessel. The implication of the hat is that DiBergi was a Navy veteran.

Ben

I'm glad you both enjoyed this, I thought you would, I feel like it appeals to both of your senses of humour, even in ways they differ. Simone seems to know a fair bit about these kinds of bands, and George mentioned liking The Office (original) before (this movie was indeed an influence). As you're also a Simpsons fan George, you may remember the Season 3 episode "The Otto Show"? now that you've seen "Spinal Tap" you should definitely rewatch that episode!

Logan Kerlee

This movie isn't for me. xD I've watched 35 minutes and I'm not digging it. I'll check out the reaction video but this ain't my thing. lol, it's awesome that ya'll are digging on this!

sarCC

Strangely enough, Metallica's own real-life documentary from the 2000s resembles this movie an embarrassing amount.

Lyonheart86(BryonH)

one of the funniest movies ever lol. You should check out Almost Famous too.

Kinokind

Oh, so much to say! Most of the dialog was improvised. All of the music was written and performed by Shear, McKeon and Guest, who are all so gifted as musicians and comedians that they could parody genres while still making music that was almost good. Christopher Guest and the others have done a series of "mockumentaries" lampooning folk music (A Mighty Wind), dog shows (Best in Show), regional theater (Waiting for Guffman), etc. All are brilliant. Christopher Guest is, if fact, British nobility and is married to Jamie Lee Curtis, and there is so much more. . . I worked for years at a large concert venue: the Fox Theatre, in Detroit (second largest theatre in the states, after Radio City), and saw many of these things first hand. Performers would, on occasion, stop at the door to my office, which was under the stage, and ask for directions to catering or somewhere. They would then go where I pointed, to the left, and five minutes later reappear from the right, having traveled in a circle and still looking for catering. I was told that every tour bus carried a copy of This is Spinal Tap. By the way, Spinal Tap once performed at the Fox, and I was asked after the sound check to lead a couple of show people through the auditorium to a restaurant on the other side of the building, where they were going to dine. One of them turned out to be a gent named C. J. Vanston, who had done music direction for a bunch of Guest and co.'s projects. When he saw that we had a pipe organ he wanted to look at it, and I offered to let him play it. He sat down and, with his friend recording on his phone, played "Saucy Jack" (yes, they did write it!), with the organ music echoing through the vast auditorium. When he finished there was scattered laughter and applause from the road crew and the stagehands still on stage after the sound check. The video is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BN-0G6ArNQo. PS - I though George was going to have a stroke during Stonehenge!

Brendan Rafferty

I played in a touring band in the 80's and every musician I knew at that time was constantly quoting either Spinal Tap or Blues Brothers

Opti_Frog

I forget how funny this movie is 😄

King_Panarisi

School of Rock with Jack Black next?

Andrew T

Unless I missed it in the comments, no one mentioned that Christopher Guest plays the Six-Fingered Man in The Princess Bride.

sarCC

Also, since you two loved this alot, you should probably check out (if you haven't already) the Lonely Island movie Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. This movie is an obviously a forebearer to it and it's equally insanely, ridiculously hilarious mockumentary

Gary Fixler

I don't know how I didn't recognized Paul Shaffer as Artie Fufkin.

Gary Fixler

Older Americans like me know the lady who George said had a beautiful smile - Fran Drescher - as the star of the sitcom The Nanny (6 years, 146 eps), which everyone in the US knew back then, because of her crazy voice, which was probably the main gag running through the show, and Michael McKean as Lenny of Lenny and Squiggy, neighbor weirdo greasers of Laverne and Shirley (1976-1983, 178 eps), a very popular spin-off of Happy Days (1974-1984, 255 eps, starring Henry Winkler as The Fonz, and Ron Howard as Richie Cunningham).

Aaron M

I am with George on the second hand embarrassment, although for some reason this movie never triggered mine, I can't watch Borat though, the cringe is too much.

Michael

Best In Show uses the much of the same talent and format and is my favorite of these unofficial series of films.

Ginger

I highly recommend checking out the 2018 album "Smalls Change" on Spotify. It's by Harry Shearer in character as Derek Smalls, singing about life as an aging rockstar. It's perfect :D
