Pretty sure the skinny fellow and the fat friend is Holmes and Watson, all representations of apprenticeship from TV shows in the 60s and all 3 (lone ranger, batman, and the adventures of sherlock Holmes) are ostensibly detective/noir stories, right up Constantine's alley

Bill Campbell

I thought the Skinny man and Fat friend were Sam and Twitch from Spawn. But Spawn is Todd McFarlane. Perhaps an homage.

Bill Campbell

In the comics Constantine is a blonde, snarky, Englishman, and there was a TV show in 2014 that cast Constantine as he was in the comics but it never really caught on and only ran for 1 season.

thedragon133

I think the skinny and the fat friend are Laurel and Hardy,

Who Are These People

George, trying to understand Christianity through Catholicism won't get you anywhere. Catholicism was off the rails from its beginning. Then trying to understand it through popular media representations of Catholic theology is like setting the derailed train on fire to try to get it to go. If you really want to 'get it', you're going to have to go for it elsewhere.

He held symbols against the sun to charge them before pressing it against the possed girl. You missed crucial bit that woman cop said during confession that she somehow always knows where the perpetrator is, what they are going to do, before she shoots them. No, priest cannot go to police, confession is completely sacred and not disclosable, only before god. Of course, in our age some priests might not be so strict.

wroot

The priest guy had an amulet protecting him from voices in hid head and demons. John asked him to remove the amulet, so he can find a clue for him. Which end up killing him as he got too close to truth.

When i first heard about this movie and read lukewarm reviews i didn't think much and only decided to watch it maybe 5 years ago on a whim. And i love it so much, will never get bored of snarky Keanu :) Weisz was also great. I like how it is not completely by the book about demons and angels and biblical stuff. How it is a "balance" and devil will kick his son to keep his position. And angels wants humanity to suffer to be worthy. And a sacrifice. John gave his life for her sister. That was the ultimate sacrifice, not saving the humanity. Because devil stopped everything himself, John just hinted, but that was not enough. Yeah, this is cliche, but was done with a style and flipping up the devil :D Classy :)

I recently watched the Deadpool reaction and Simone mentioned Domino Harvey, the real life bounty hunter who had a Tony Scott movie made about her life. Domino Harvey is in this movie! She’s the woman in Papa Midnight’s bar that has short hair, glowing eyes and a woman on her lap.

Onno Smits

Hell yeah, that's my Saturday Afternoon right there! Been waiting for this one.

JayF

If you really want to have some fun with the, "George is a communist" person then do a reaction to Trumbo. Bonus - It's a fantastic movie about a very interesting person that's very tied to Hollywood history.

JediLounger

Welcome back guys. I had a good Christmas, no drama or craziness just hanging out with my cat and family. Made extensive use of my Steam Deck. I really like this movie, there is a sequel in development. Other movies like it. Prince of Darkness (1987) The Ninth Gate (1999) Sleepy Hollow (1999) The Devil’s Advocate (1997) The Fallen (1998) Drag Me to Hell (2009) In the Mouth of Madness (1994)

Odd Thomas

For another great Tilda Swinton villain, watch The Chronicles of Narnia

Odd Thomas

It was called Constantine because Hellblazer sounded too similar to Hellraiser

Jack Burton

Skinny fellow with the fat friend is Abbot and Costello. EDIT: My Mistake - it's Laurel and Hardy. Got em mixed up. Thanks Ville

john blake

Long live ‘communist’ George!!

Martin Nicholls

Alan Moore's accent makes no sense btw, he's from Northampton so should have an almost middle of the road accent, but his is almost Geordie-adjacent, particularly the way he pronounces certain words, I have no clue what that is. That movie George mentioned, yus, hell, the series of movies even - but the Japanese originals not the cheesy remakes. I'm not a weeb, but I do have an appreciation for good Japanese cinema, and that is up there. So on lore and whatnot there is actually a TV series, I haven't seen it myself but I heard occasional good things? Did end after the first season though. The fight over the years to get a sequel made has been almost as strong as the one to get them to uncancel Firefly - GOOD NEWS: sequel is in production. Yes, starring Keanu. And Lu is back.

Odd Thomas

There was a TV series - without Keanu. I watched like one episode. There is still talk of Constantine 2, so you never know!

MikeBdrx

HBOmax has a couple Constantine animated movies and they are really good. Worth the watch.

Justin Wolford

The graphic novel is hell blazer. But dc animation has made a couple good movies like city of demons and justice league: dark which i recommend depending on if you want to read or watch more Constantine. They also just finally anounced a sequel a few months ago.

AzraRillian

As some here have mentioned, there are some excellent animated movies, but the live action TV show that was made some years ago wasn't terrible either. It was pretty faithful to the comics, but unfortunately it had issues with pacing and, in my opinion, the cinematography could have been better.

redddfer44

The Devil is a Chinese dude with a F.A.R.T. shirt? Dante Alighieri got it all wrong. I ended my year by turning in my master's thesis and on the last day of the year, had a beer with my friends and watched "Twister" and at midnight I was watching an old favorite, "Dazed and Confused".

Timothy Burrows

Finally! Another reactor I follow watches Constantine.

The Maestro

I'd assume Alan Moore probably doesn't like this film because he just seems like a grumpy old man who doesn't like comic book movies but there's also some divisiveness about Keanu although I like his performance in this he's also very not blond, not British like he is in the comics

Scott Elsasser

Always liked this one, the casting of Lucifer is particularly good (it would make the network show so much more interesting.) Can't wait for the next one, i can't help but think that John will go back to smoking. Nicotine gum is just awful. Absolutely loved the review guys keep up the great work. Happy New Year.

Monica Alarcon

OMG, you need "George is a Communist" T-Shits in the merch store!! I'd buy two... also you need a Merch store...

Young Blood Priest

The live action series not only had pacing issues, they put a few episodes out of order. It was obvious NBC didn’t care. Stephen Amell, star of Arrow, talked the show up and somehow got the character to get added to the DC lineup on the CW.

Generators

i agree, they need a merch store. id definitely buy from them! im actually surprised they dont have one, other smaller channels do already.

Steve Mercier

Being such a fan of the Hellblazer comic book from DC Vertigo, I really truly dislike all the changes from the source material in this movie...and yet, fuck my fanboy self, I still love this movie.

Shawn Washburn

If you get Simone to watch The Ring you HAVE to record the reaction. Not many horror movies creep me out but that one did.

Kevin Bartelen

My interpretation of that end credit's scene is that Chas is the new Gabriel, a new angel to take her place.

Opti_Frog

Peter Stormare hamming it up as Lucifer is so much fun. Keanu is great casting as snarky and dying Constantine. Plenty of stuff in this movie is not particularly true to the Hellblazer comic, but i still think it's a great adaptation and i'm sad that it didn't spawn a franchise. Would have loved to see this version of Constantine's Newcastle. Now that's some dark shit. And thank you comment section for informing me about Constantine 2, becasue i had no idea! Akiva Goldsman writing the script...? Ack!

Jay Davis

If it makes you feel any better, I came for the patriotic porn but STAYED for the saucy, delicious communism.

Jon Johns

George & Simone, there is a German film called, "Wings of Desire" about angels, and an American remake called, "City of Angels" that you all might enjoy on your own. Wings of Desire is pretty amazing, city of angels is kind of a general romance film, it's much more easily digested, less intellectual, and the setting is more "Hollywood."

Logan Kerlee

lmao, holidays were very nice. No JUICY drama to mention. xD lmao!! xD I LOVE those comments! hahahaha, definitely brought a smile to my face. This movie was such a blast watching with you both! The cheesy lines fit in with the movie. It knew what it was doing all throughout. lmao, I never watched the new version of The Wicker Man, just the original. I don't think I could stomach the new one. Tilda was EXCELLENT in this! Holy shit, she was amazing. hahahahaha, I was laughing a good bit when you were oohing and awwing over Keanu. xD They did make a Constantine tv show that wasn't worth watching at all. Lasted for one season and it tied into the whole DCTV universe. Really wasn't very cool and it's kid gloves made it laughable.

Logan Kerlee

I wouldn't put it up with Firefly. xD Fans are rabid for more of that series! :P I love it so much! xDD

August King

In the official novelization, it makes it clear that Chas was human and became a new half-breed angel: "Behind them, Gabriel shuddered, sensing the opening of a doorway... And the room filled with light. A silhouetted figure appeared, in a shimmering doorway. Heaven illuminated behind him with higher-dimensional clarity. Heaven's newest half-angel: It was Chaz, adjusting his cap, casually. Smiling sardonically at Gabriel. "S'up, Gabie." Chaz robbed his hands together. He had a lot of work to do in his new gig, and he was looking forward to it. "P.S., man," Chaz said to Gabriel, walking past him. "You have one shitload of explaining to do."

Amaras

For me this movie will always be a bad adaptation of Hellblazer, but a really good action movie. Most of the changes about the character I don’t like, but the fact that they colour swap the costume is just a genius move. John is supposed to be blond, with a grey/yellowish Trenshcoat and well… Keanu being Dark haired I love the fact they gave him a black blazer. His attitude is on point. John is a broody character to start with. If you liked the movie, you should consider giving a try to the DC animated movie where he as an appearance. Justice League Dark for example. As always, loved your reactions and your questions throughout the movie. Keep on the good work and a happy new year to you two ! By the way… as a French man who lived in QC for a year, I heard a lot of time Saskatoon and Saskatchewan bein’ craped on. Thank you George, you made me laugh with this one !

Crazykirsch

For a related(if only tangentially) movie suggestion I'm putting forth Dogma. Was planning to suggest it for a while but with the whole Christian mythology meta-relation and George bringing up George Carlin seemed like a sign. My favorite Kevin Smith movie by a sizeable margin and for a 90s comedy the humor's barely aged.

droodly

On a related note, I like to believe the "Skinny fella and his fat friend" referenced in this movie is Jay and Silent Bob. :P

This Hon

They are indeed making a 2nd one coming late this year or in 2024

Ricardo Alanis

Love this movie. The short lived TV series was also great and I second the suggestion for Dogma.

Spacedone

You should check out a great but largely forgotten Guillermo Del Toro movie called Mimic.

AdNoctumLoki .

You guys should watch Lucifer the series. It's similar to this.

AULDYIN

George are you n Simone Communists...???

AULDYIN

👍🤣✊️🍹🍺🍻🍺

Samuel Preston

In case anyone didn’t know, Balthazar was played by Gavin Rossdale. He was the lead singer for Bush.

Tanx

hmm off hand the skinny man and fat guy might be Don Quixote and Sancho or perhaps Abbott and Costello or Laurel and Hardy, Robin Hood and Little John or could be other references.... maybe Jake and the Fatman, Jay and Silent Bob ;p . lol quite a few to choose from that predate the movie.
