About the hairstyle: I'm used to seeing pictures and movies of medieval European monks with their heads partly shaved, and between the obviously medieval setting and his talk of meditation it's easy to just assume his hair is a traditional or religious style for a monastic order.

This is one of my favorite movies. It's got everything you could want: humor, action, love stories, political intrigue. It's friggin' great. If you guys haven't seen it, I would recommend Hayao Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke. It's got kind of the same thing going. It's honestly one of the most deeply cinematic movies I can think of. Which is weird cuz it's, ya know, animated. The dubbed cast is really good on that, too.

Thomas Yanez

Yeah, I was kind of surprised that George expressed the thoughts he did about people seeing the haircut. Movies are full of people from various times in history having weird hair. I never even blinked at the monk's haircut. Like clothing and makeup, when you're watching a period piece, all bets are off on what was "normal" for the time.

I was honestly startled to hear Simone say "she's so young!" about Michelle Yeoh. She feels like such an old soul in this movie. It was the first thing I saw her in that switched my view of her from "young female lead" to "badass elder". (Not elderly, just playing the generation who are leaders and parents.) You should watch Supercop (I forget if she was in 2 or 3), or Tomorrow Never Dies which is not a great movie but worth it to see how many North Americans were first.introduced to her. After Hero, of course.

Thank you George for giving me even greater than understanding of one my favourite movies. 新年快乐

What's your opinion on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny?

Dan Gosden

Yes for Hero, but also House of Flying Daggers

Dee Aitch

It was "Police Story 3: Supercop" and then "Supercop 2". Which is kinda unique with the sequel numbering going down.

The first kung fu movie i watched that made me want to watch all the chinese kung fu movies of this era was Twin Warriors or also known as Tai Chi Master. You have to watch it dubbed though. It had music in the dubbed version that you dont hear in the original chinese version.

Metacortex

These thumbnails are hilarious. Is it George or Simone that does the photoshopping?

Bill Pearson

This is a really amazing movie! I like the touch of the mystical in it. Well done, Simone and George!

john paul

Please watch Tai Chi Master/Twin Warriors and please watch it in english dub

Markus

Original language is my preference. The dubbing gets a lot of translation wrong, and also messed up some character development because of it.

Markus

Some other amazing Wuxia/Kung Fu films to consider: Tai Chi Master; Drunken Master/Drunken Master II; Hero; Once Upon a Time in China; Wing Chun; 8 Diagram Pole Fighter; My Young Auntie; 36 Chamber of Shaolin; Iron Monkey; 5 Deadly Venoms; 7 Grandmasters; Supercop; Enter The Dragon; Fist of Fury; Way of the Dragon; Shaolin Temple; Executioners of Shaolin; The Magnificent Butcher; Lady is the Boss; Heroes of the East…

LittleSillyGoose

There are many wuxia/xianxia romances, in case Simone was interested.

redddfer44

Ooh cool, I've been meaning to watch this! I tried recently but the library's disc was so scratched it was useless.

Maddie

If you want to watch another Ang Lee movie, The Ice Storm is really good!

Jesse Nkinsi

Pretty much every culture back in the day had a weird hair cut. The Europeans with their moustaches, powdered wigs and such. The Mongols, the Japanese, South American Empires, West African Empires, all of them had crazy hair styles. We're all the same.

Onikaze

as far as the shaved front part of the head I just always assumed it was some sort of status/rank/caste not unlike the shaven pate of the samurai. All of which I suspect the beginnings were along the lines of some high ranking court official took a liking to, or had male pattern baldness so made it a fashion statement and it just got copied from there.

Cinebinge

it does seem like it should be one of those weird historical fashion choices like the Alexandra Limp in Victorian times, but the Manchu queue hairstyle unfortunately began in the 1600 when the Manchu ruling class just imposed it on the entire population. To the extreme that any who didn't follow it within a 10 day period would be executed. Which is quite the extreme change from the preceding Dynasty's primary religious belief in Daoism, which included the believe that not cutting ones hair shows respect for the body's natural processes.

Gung hay fat choy !

HeyHeyJK

In my top five favorite films of all time. Couldn't love this film more, even if I wanted to.

Monica Alarcon

Okay now watch the OTHER martial arts masterpiece: Kung Pow! Enter the Fist...

michael clarke

hero was really good. the ending stayed with me. just beautiful and scary all at the same time.

Emptysea93

Would love to see you all react to Hero. This and Hero were what made me fall in love with Wuxia. Would also love to see you both react to House of Flying Daggers and Curse of the Golden Flower

Ed Stephens

Hero, House of Flying Daggers, and Warriors of Heaven and Earth are visually beautiful movies I hope you get to do for YouTube. Warriors of Heaven and Earth is one of my favourite action movies along with 13th Warrior, which should also get added to a poll.

Happy Hanukkah

2:35 When I first saw The Name of The Rose (1986) (consider this a recommendation), I knew it was set in a monastery, but I didn't know that it took place in medieval times. You can imagine my initial confusion. (Yes, I did eventually get into Umberto Eco.)

Marshall Mitcham

House of Flying Daggers, please!!!! Hero is also amazing. I prefer Daggers personally, but I’ll take what I can get😃

Kaan Mustafa

I would really like to see your reaction to CTHD2

Adi L

Ran here as soon as I was able to to watch this. I was hoping if George would say anything about Chow Yun-fat and his Mandarin since I know that Chow Fun Fat is a Cantonese speaker. Please watch House of Flying Daggers! The visuals are even more stunning and Takeshi Kaneshiro and Andy Lau are in it!
